I've been really digging Unexpect lately, and what I'm looking for is metal that is at the same time absurd and sinister, with symphonic elements and preferably 'operatic' vocals, or maybe a 'metal' version of Diamanda Galas. What I have in mind really is something that melds Unexpect with Diamanda with early Opera IX and Virgin Black.

You would probably like Aberrant Vascular, though they have only released a few demos so far.

I'm interested too what people will come up with. I'm just going on the "absurd and sinister, with symphonic elements and preferably 'operatic' vocals" part, cause I don't really know if there's anything out there thats exactly what you described.

Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale (essential)
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors (essential)
Atrox - Orgasm (worth a try at least I'd say)
Devil Doll - Dies Irae (DD isn't really metal but sounds like exactly what you'd want)
Devil Doll - The Girl Who Was... Death
Korovakill - Waterhells (like Arcturus only not quite as good)
Ram-Zet - Escape (worth a try)
Solefald - In Harmonia Universali (the vocal style may not be what you'd want as much, but I'd definitely listen)
Vulture Industries - The Dystopia Journals (like Arcturus only not quite as good)

Dark Suns - Existence (I dunno, you might like it. it's not really absurd though and is slightly cheesy.)
Empyrium - Songs of Moors and Misty Fields (great symphonic doom album
In the Woods... - Omnio (not really absurd but very Virgin Blackish and with both male and female operatic vocals)
In the Woods... - Strange in Stereo

You might want to try Root from Kärgeräs onwards. Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but it is dark and sinister, the vocals become somewhat operatic at times, and the songwriting and musicianship is mindblowingly great for the most part.

Yeah, Root is a great band. The Book, Black Seal, and Madness of the Graves are all solid to great albums. The Book is probably more of the sound you'd be after.
