I would like to hear some metal inspired by greek and roman themes rather than celtic and viking ones. Something like Viking, only in the mediterranean sea. Virgin Steele immediately comes to mind, Stormlord, Ex Deo and Spite Extreme Wing (only the last album) too. Anything else?

I'm fine with every genre, but I am especially looking for folk/viking bands.

I tried Hesperia, they're orrible, and I can't find anything by La Caruta di li Dei.

Kronos (fra), brutal death metal with lyrics dealing with Greek mithology.

Daemonia Nymphe/Fiendish Nymph, greek folk music/black metal respectively with same members. Daemonia Nymphe utilize only traditional Greek instruments as well as a traditional style of composition.

Kawir, pagan black metal with more mythological lyrics.

Bacchia Neraida. Similar yet much inferior to Kawir.

Therion have lots of songs based on ancient mythologies. They do not focus on Greek/Roman lyrics only though...

Holy Martyr

They're like the Greco-Roman version of Doomsword.

Mithras' first album Forever Advancing Legions might also apply, though musically it has about as much to do with Romans as Effigy of the Forgotten has to do with effigies of the forgotten.

Manilla Road has some Greek or Roman references on nearly all of their albums. Of course, you should check out "Gates of Fire" in particular...the second and third parts of the trilogy deal with the rise of Rome and the battle of Thermopyle, respectively. I don't think you'll find much overtly folky metal dealing with these themes, but Holy martyr certainly does have some traditional sections.

Battleroar its Greek band with an Italian singer with epic power/traditional metal sound but their theme includes mostly celtic/viking but they do have few songs with greco/roman theme

Sacred Blood from Greece released their debut album in 2008 "The Battle Of Thermopylae" and it has a theme concept about that battle, they have traditional/power metal sound

Assedium from Italy also have some songs with greco/roman theme.

Ancient Rites from Blegium, viking metal. their last album, Rvbicon is about Romans. it's a very solid release by an equally solid band.

Ancestral Rhymes from Greece have some strong ancient greek thematology; the greek cult blackmetallers Kawir, too. You'll surely find pleasure with Zemial's and Astral Aeon's lyrics. Enjoy : )

They are not viking metal, but Lair of the Minotaur is all about Greek mythology.

A Thousand Years Slavery might work, their page says inner struggles but, A Fury Named Spartan is about as Greek as you can get.

Maurizio Iacono from Kataklysm has a side project (entitled Ex Deo, releasing their debut soon) which has Roman historical and mythological lyrics.

I have a review planned for this album as well, as it needs some more. It's a fucking epic effort that deserves recognition.

Nordor's "Honoris Causa" is an interesting DM album, it has some spoken-word instrumentals that are ritualistic chants in honor of the Greek gods. Lyrics are more or less worship of the Gods.

Odin's Court and Unholy Archangel are also BM bands with lyrics about ancient Greek history and mythology (they're both raw BM, but I personally don't like Unholy Archangel very much).

A fucking excellent band with some lyrics relevant to the request is Scythian. Check out "To Those Who Stand Against Us...", it's some terrific DM with synths. Autothrall was spot on in his review: imagine a whole album of Morbid Angel's "Chapel of Ghouls", but with more of an epic effect.

I suppose Rotting Christ is a no-brainer. All of "Theogonia" is entirely about Greek mythology, and the concept of "Aealo" is set in ancient Greek times.

I will post links after I make pasta.
