That's not a particularly descriptive word, but you probably get what I mean. What I'm most specifically looking for is thrash metal in the vein of Invasion's 'Berserk Artillery Barrage'. Extremely aggressive and heavy thrash metal with a particularly pummeling quality. Demolition Hammer is also a good reference point. What I'm especially NOT looking for:

-I don't want death/thrash or black/thrash or any other fusion styles. I would like it to be as close to pure thrash as possible. A little bit of death or black influence ala Invasion is acceptable, but I don't want it to be a dominant influence.

-I don't want anything heavily influenced by the Bay Area styles; Brazilian and Teutonic are much more my speed. Melody is generally the enemy for what I'm looking for.

-Nothing particularly crossoverish unless you've found something exceptionally brutal as well as punky. This goes from everything from Cryptic Slaughter to Municipal Waste. I'd like the music to be dark and unfriendly.

Hmm... that kind of brutal thrash is strangely rather unexplored. I was going to recommend you Tapping the Vein (you never know, some people only know the big bands' classics) but realized you did a review for it. I just listened to some Invasion, definitely awesome, gonna check it but unfortunately I know nothing that sounds like that.

But in other words, I guess "If [insert any brutal death metal band, like say Jungle Rot] played thrash metal" could be a good description?

^ Well of course, but that would be too easy.

I would recommend Hypnosia vigorously, and particularly their EP. Hilariously brutal yet pure thrash metal. Besieged (Canada) is also a very brutal thrash band without employing much influence from other forms of extreme metal. I would also recommend Viking's first album. It sounds a lot like Darkness Descends with a decidedly more Brazilian tinge to their sound.

Slaughter - Strappado has a nice chunky tone, with that similar pummeling sound, but I'm not sure if they'll be brutal enough for you.

I strongly second the Hypnosia rec.

Fastkill - Infernal Thrashing Holocaust and Massacra - Final Holocaust should fit the bill perfectly.

Those are probably the closest bands in my library to Demolition Hammer/Invasion.

Necrodeath's first two albums also fit the mold... though the production doesn't do them justice.
Fragments of Insanity is particularly tremendous.

Num Skull - Ritually Abused & Demo - Completely vicious and pummelling, reminds me of Demolition hammer a lot. It's catchy too somehow. One of my favorite car tapes right now.

Insanity - Everything - classic proto-dm thrash stuff, you probably already know this band, but just in case....

Have you heard Bestial Desecration from Germany? Very fierce and brutal, nothing fun about them at all, and they same to take off where the Teutonic bands left off rather than just imitating the older bands.

You're probably aware of them already, but I'd put forward Sadus's Death to Posers demo and their debut, Illusions to a lesser extent as well as Anacrusis's debut Suffering Hour. All three very vicious, brutal and intense.

Listen to Overthrow. They sound very similiar to Demolition Hammer in the riffing and vocal department.

Overthrow aren't softies but they can hardly be called 'brutal' when compared to old stuff from Dark Angel, Sadus, Kreator, Morbid S., etc etc etc

Check out the Aggression's (Can) The Full Treatment for a somewhat humorous take on this buzz-sawing brutal sub genre.

Epidemic's (US) Decameron on the other hand applies directly to the "dark, evil" kind of brutal thrash Morbid Saint has, but much more pronounced in this manner. Extremely pissed off.

tbh morbid saint is not that good

yeah i kinda agree with brutal thrash being a kind of underrepresented in bands wise. I blame bands going play death metal instead of brutal thrash.

I'm not sure if it would qualify as "brutal thrash" and it's very well known, but Exhorder's Slaughter In The Vatican is one of my favorite cd's of all time and is some very heavy thrash.

"One Way" by Turbo (the Polish one of course) is brutal thrash, check it out.

And I see no one mentioned Assassin. This German band has some hardcore-punk influence in their music, but is basically brutal thrash as well.

Have you heard Inquisitor's "Walpurgis Sabbath of Lust"?? Very intense thrash with vocals like nothing I've ever heard. It has death influences but is thrash overall I would say, the members went on to form Centurian.

Bands I've recommended before that are really underappreciated:

Devastation (Chicago)
Papsmear

Both of these had re-issues/comps released in the past year - and both are fucking fantastic and must-haves for fans of aggressive thrash. \m/

Demolition Hammer, Sadus, Dark Angel and Morbid Saint. I always bring up those 4 in almost every thread, but those are the 4 biggest ones, and probably the best too. You also have Chakal from Brazil, Slaughter from Canada, Bulldozer from Italy and Blood Feast.
