I've been thinking deeply about this question lately. Basically, I'm trying to find the most evil-sounding band that has ever existed. I'm also taking stage presence and appearance into account somewhat (you can't help but do so in some cases) though I'd like it mainly to be about the music. I figure the most evil-sounding band ever will probably look pretty fucking scary anyways.

So far, my top albums are Belphegor - Lucifer Incestus, Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness. I'm sure there are more evil recordings, so help me out here and let's see if we can find the most evil recording in history.

You know most black metal bands stick to the haunting, spiritual type of creepiness to scare or make the listener get into the mood.

However, I'll give my vote (at the moment) to Darkspace or any other space themed bands that convey atmosphere as they do. Something about the abyssal, endless nothingness of dark space just gives me chills up and down. It outweighs any type of evil and for those who've played Mass Effect, you must have been scared shitless when informed on the history of The Reapers. Creepy stuff.

Therefore I'll prop up Darkspace's first album, cause that's all I can think of right now.





...then again, Necrophobic's The Nocturnal Silence is overly evil. The title track has the most sinister tune I've ever heard - Satan would approve of it and wage war on God with that song playing through the horizon.

Tartaros - The Red Jewel

Its pretty twisted stuff.

I haven't really heard that many through and through evil albums. De Profundis Mors Vas Consumet is an incredibly evil sounding song, but the rest of the EP (or compilation, for original appearance) is very meh. Drawing Down The Moon and The Deity Of Perversion sound pretty fucking evil to me, as well as Abgzvoryathre and a very few other LLN demos.

But for scariness, nothing's creeped me the fuck out more than Transformalin by Diagnose: Lebensgefahr, the followup to Silencer, who weren't really as much scary as depressive/annoying. Industrial/experimental's much more fertile ground for outright scariness than much else.

Nokturnal Mortum - Goat Horns

Some can say NeChrist if they want, but I found that album pure shit. Goat Horns definitely blends hellish melodies and omnious folk melodies, hallucinating buzzsaw riffs, hypnotizing synths, and some seriously Rambo-mutilated vocals.

The atmosphere is dazed in Hellfire, yet the production is frostbitten. Gotta hear it to believe it.

I'll never forget listening to Hell Awaits from start to finish in 6th grade with a friend. We sat there for 37 minutes without saying a word. It was the most evil thing I'd ever heard.

I don't know what my answer would be now, there are so many choices, but then Slayer was the end all be all.

Although this doesn't necessarily answer the question, I've never heard a metal album that I'd really qualify as scary. The music just doesn't make me feel it, no matter how receptive to the emotion I allow myself to be.

I would go ahead and say Ordo Ad Chao is perhaps one of the most disturbing and evil albums I've ever heard. There's not one single album I can point to that even strikes similarity to it, and it's clearly a Black Metal album.

I'd cast my vote for scariest for Thergothon's Stream from the Heavens. The production combined with the vocals and very slow and sinister music as well as the Lovecraft-themed lyrics make it very special.



This is very true. There is something evil and sinister about the whole album and its production. It's what makes it really stand out. Too bad they turned to pure drivel after that.

Also thought I'd mention a lot of people think Stalaggh/Gulaggh are downright horrifying, even if I think they're absolute shit.

That orchestral link is pretty goddamn creepy too; makes me think of what a classical version of Hamburger Lady would sound like.

Speaking of which, Throbbing Gristle are also absolutely mandatory for disturbing music, not the least because they were essentially the progenitors of it. Listen to all 18 minutes of Very Friendly and tell me you don't feel the least bit uneasy.

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

In all honesty, I did think of the above album when I saw the thread title, but despite the evilness and scariness of the title track, there are eviler and scarier things out there.

Seconding Hell Awaits, that album contains some of the most evil riffs known to man. Perhaps some Mayhem stuff has that whole vibe, and even some Enslaved (some of their acoustic stuff).

To be perfectly honest, the only song that has ever genuinely invoked a feeling of fear in me is Black Sabbath, the first time I put that on I was like OMG!!1!1! Ozzy really brings it home.

The OP was asking for albums, not single songs. Regardless, the rest of the album is quite normal, even if one were to consider the title track evil (I personally don't).

This and Cryptopsy-Blasphemy Made Flesh are two albums I found that had an shroud evil wrapped around them.

I'm glad to see Ordo Ad Chao mentioned; I played that album to someone familiar with older BM and they were laughing at the vocals, about 10 minutes in they looked liek they were having some serious doubts about life!

If you like Ordo Ad Chao then you should definitely like Portal's 'Outre'.

I would have to second Darkspace, they do really make cold-sounding, creepy and haunting music.

This is mostlikely not what the OP is looking for, but there's also bands like Elend that come pretty close. They are not really metal at all, but as they are still on the archives, I guess I can post them.

Metal is not scary in itself, unless you are easily impressionable. It is when and where you listen to metal that make it scary. For example, listening to metal while walking alone in the woods at night makes me appreciate some bands more than when listening to them at home. The music of a band like Inquisition (Col), while very good to listen to anytime/anywhere, takes a whole new meaning in the aforementioned setting, and can be deemed as scary. Same for bands like Abruptum, Alpha Drone, Catacombs, TenHornedBeast, Wold et cetera...


When it comes to scary and evil music, dark ambient and death industrial put metal to shame, easily.

The things you find "scary" leads me to believe you're all 12 year olds going to a Catholic boarding school. I mean, Cryptopsy? What the fuck?

That's why I said dark ambient AND death industrial are more scary and evil than metal. You see, death industrial is a mix of dark ambient and noise. The name of this subgenre says it all: the goal of this music is to create death ambiences, and sometimes with ritualistic overtones. Scary and evil.
Also, pure noise can be "evil". Have you ever heard of Nicole 12 or Whitehouse? Their lyrical themes are pedophilia (Nicole 12), misogyny, sexual deviance, violence (Whitehouse)... is that not "evil" enough for you?

I would say 'Legion' by Deicide.

Glen Benton's high pitched shriek and growls are pretty terrifying.
Plus the start of 'Satan Spawn, the Caco-daemon' gave me chills when I first listened to it.
