By the way, is there a band with drum machines, that actuallly sound good? most bands I've heard with drum machines have this totally weak, flat sound They often use no fills and play only the most basic beats, but that's not the worst thing, lots of bands do that, but why do drum machine sound so shitty all the time?

Some drum fill porn for you, and it's not even made on any commercial drumkit software: www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=52015

Maybe because of rather artificial sound?
In my opinion it isn't the case of most bands mentioned here.
Of course, shitty using of drum machines we can find as well. Some songs are even so bad that it has nothing to do with real music at all.
The main reason is in principle lack of musician skills.

If a band uses a drum machine because they didn't know anyone who could drum (e.g. Rotting Christ) then that is fine. If a band uses a drum machine because they drumming they want is impossible (e.g. The Beserker) then I consider the band worthless.

I'll have to disagree here. To me using a drum machine on an album because you're too lazy to find someone who can drum or to learn to play a beat yourself, communicates to me a lack of dedication and clear artistic vision.

On the contrary, I really like the way bands like Summoning and Blut Aus Nord have been able to use drum machines in an innovative manner that would probably be impossible to reproduce with a real drummer, unlike every single shitty MySpace black metal band out there with the same plastic 4/4 beat programmed onto every song.

Platonic butsecks, yes.
I thought you could only do that with little boys.

I believe that Countess (a Dutch, Black/trad. Metal band that doesn't suck like a certain Portuguese band who's name shall remain anonymous) makes use of a drum machine. Doesn't take away from the music at all, thankfully.

With the exception of The Gospel Of The Horned One, Hell's Rock & Roll and De Gift der Goden (the bonus track on The Book Of The Heretic), all of Countess's studio material employs programmed drums. They fit their purpose just fine, since Countess is as far from anything flashy as can be, to the point that even at their cheapest (The Return Of The Horned One; to be fair, everything on that album sounds like crap)they don't ruin the whole experience.

Drum machines suck. Get a real drummer, imo.

Crotchduster uses a drum machine.
Cane, who is listed as a drummer, is in fact the name of a dog according to the MA band page.

I think it's worth learning drums in order to avoid drum machines, unless the fake drums add something to the music that a human cannot.

Drums aren't THAT hard, unless you play tech death.

But they have and have had real drummers...

'Subliminal Servitude' by Anomalous. The electric set being played on sounds a fair bit better than the drum program, and the only thing I can really discredit Marco on is that he's playing on an electric set. The cymbals are programmed to change at different times in the song.... though I don't doubt that he could play this on an actual set.

(fucking brutal gravity blasts)

Cephalectomy has a really awesome drum machine sound. Mostly it tends to be weak and... well computerized but this sounds pretty natural.

I'm not a fan of drum machines outside of electronic or industrial music. Artificiality yanks me right out of metal, and it's really hard to get a drum machine to not sound artificial at all. When it's very well done - a rare best-case scenario - I don't mind it too much. When it's poorly done, which is usually, I can't stand listening to the album.

I'd like to see more of these obscure bands take the initiative to track down a session drummer. Even if you can't afford a pro, there are probably loads of guys posting on forums like this one who would be happy to lay down some real beats for you and transfer them through Rapidshare or wherever.
