"Drummer Antony "Antton" Lant has announced his departure from the pioneering British black metal band VENOM. "I have left for various reasons and would like to concentrate on my own band called DEF-CON-ONE," Antton — who is the brother of VENOM frontman Conrad "Cronos" Lant - tells BLABBERMOUTH.NET."

I'm surprise this hasn't been mentioned yet. I don't know what to think of it, I liked Hell but Venom felt like an old Viking trying to find back his lost youth and glory. Hell it was more a Chronos and friends band covering Venom songs than anything else. There wasn't more English than Venom and they ended up having a frenchie as a guitarist and Chronos' brother as the drummer. Not Venom at all. I wonder if Chronos will finally(?) put Venom to rest or yet again resurrect the old line-up and do a "real" comeback. While I like almost all of their albums, Venom's relevance to the metal world has been questionable since the beginning of the 90ies and now even if the old line-up could be back, one of my eyebrows would still be higher than the other.

Looks like Cronos will have to get Abaddon back! And personally I thought Hell was great

I really hope he doesn't get Abbadon back, he was aweful on Cast in Stone. He actually got worse as time went on. Anton was an ecellent drummer, in my opinion. Just listen to the Resurrection album.

Hell was awesome (USA For Satan!)...Venom can still pull it off if they're hungry for it.

Maybe this will encourage him to get a new guitarist as well who can write creative and inspirational riffs.

Not that Venom's latest releases were horrible... but they were pretty dry for the most part.

Cast in Stone was good, a little of a mixed bag but contained some really solid songs. If they do some kind of comeback I just hope they don't try to sound too much like on their classic albums but still try to maintain part of their imagery and make the sound evolve in a way that it still is similar, still Venom and somewhat original, well like Cast in Stone and Resurrection. While Metal Black and Hell were good, it was just a bad idea from Chronos. they'd be better continuing in the direction they left on Resurrection or at least CiS.

Firstly, have you ever listened to Cast in Stone? The drumming is way, waaaay off. There is no way anyone can listen to that album and say that Abaddon did a "cool" job. His sloppy style worked fine back when the whole band was sloppy, but Cronos and (especially) Mantas tightened up considerably over the years, so his drumming was extremely awkward and out of place on an otherwise fine album. Cool riffs, yes. Cool drumming, no.

Secondly, don't call me dude.

I get the feeling that Chronos can be a hard person to deal with, but I've never met him, so whatever.

It would be a blessing if Chronos just put something together for this whole 30 YEARS OF VENOM!!! WOOT!!! thing that's coming up, and then split the band up. They haven't put out anything even approaching decent since 1987's Calm Before The Storm.

I hated Hell to be honest...such a daft, bland record. Antton, I thought, was only there for the Chronos And The Recycling Show, which has run its course also. Nothing special though, as several musicians have been involved with Venom, so this departure really isn't shocking or damaging in the least sense.

Yeah but besides Abandon, Anton was the only drummer Venom had. And that's why I'm wondering about Venom's future, either Chronos tries to get attention from the metal community by reforming the original line-up - and maybe make the whole community cram their pants with surprise because of some more than decent new shit - or continues digging a hole by finding some other nobody guy and release yet another Venom clone band release. If there's something worse than retro thrash bands doing what Exodus did in the eighties, is some ex-member doing the same thing but with his own ex-band and to some point fail doing so. Doesn't mean it sucks, just that it's pointless.

True, but besides being informative, the purpose of the thread was to be an opportunity to conduct some Venom related discussion.

I know. By my nonchalant answer I was trying to convey that it's really no big deal, which, granted might be hard to catch here on the net.

I haven't listened to all of Hell, but "Metal Black" was a solid release.

Honestly, I would love to see the origional line-up back together, and this might be the perfect excuse to do so. But either way, I'll continue to at least check out whatever Venom does, origional line-up or not.

Man, I love Venom with a passion and Metal Black (Yes, the 2006 album) is one of my favourite records by any band, ever. Mock me if you must get into 80s worshipping elitism, but that slab of headbanging majesty is HEAVY.

Hell however really seemed like a let down. The two live tracks were brilliant and left me craving a proper live album, but apart from that only 'Blood Sky' grabbed me.

It's pretty clear that for whatever reason, Cronos just can't keep a stable lineup together. It'll be interesting to see where they go to from here.

Oh ENKC, you poser. Always posing.

Anyway, a small part of me actually did like Metal Black somewhat. However, I think that was the same part of me that likes Calm Before The Storm. Really, what bothers me the most about the newer Venom isn't the lack of Mantas (though his badass riffs will be sadly missed), but rather the voice of Chronos. His voice has changed for the worse. Oh, it still has the same general sound, but it's less powerful than it used to be and isn't quite as charming as it was on, let's say, Calm before The Storm.

On a side note: am I the only person that would like to see a tour by Sabbat (of Japan) wherein Chronos does the vox? I know it's a pipe dream, but goddamn it would be the most awesome thing ever!

You mean actually replacing the legendary Gezol through the whole set? Then yes, otherwise Chronos contributing some vocals would be great.

I mean having Chronos sing some Sabbat songs (maybe the earlier one's, as they would suit his voice better) live, with Gezol contributing bass and any gang shouts. Or (better yet) the guys in Sabbat could work out some way to split up the vox for so they could get some dual vox action going on. That and maybe a few old venom covers with Chronos on vox. I'd love to hear that on a studio EP, honestly. Sabbat sounds more like Venom than Venom does nowadays anyway.

Unfortunately, this will never happen. Or, at least not until the Japanese Sabbat is more well known than the UK Sabbat. They're a better band anyway (the Japanese one). Money is what makes the record labels go round, you know.

And, yes, the world does not need another shitty venom compilation album. I'm sure they'll just do a few live shows (maybe with the original line up) and call it the "30 years of [insert pun here]" tour. Whatever happens, they're going to need to get a new drummer, so why not borrow good old Abby for a few months? it's not like he's got anything important to be doing nowadays (especially not in his garbage "solo' project).

The thing with Venom best of's is they don't even put they best songs on there, it's always stuff from singles like Warhead that nobody ever wants to hear again.

I guess that there are "best of the worst" albums too.

I just noticed that Metallica has basically never released any compilation album. If Deep Purple just could sue some of their fans too, they could probably stop mass-releasing live albums and best of's.

That would be amazingly awesome, but I think I'd miss Gezol's vocals... they're so wacky at times.

What Venom need to do is ditch trying to play "regular songs" and try doing something more raw and aggressive. This will never happen though as the very idea of the band started on rock star ethics.

And speaking of Sabbat it makes me think of a somewhat ironic situation. Sabbat were accused by some people of being Venom copycats, while Sabbat never achieved Venom's popularity, their time wasn't as short as Venom which was like 4-5 years. Hell that's short, arguably, Sabbat never had any crisis and always stayed true to their sound while not fearing to reinvent themselves and always had a pretty consistent catalogue in terms of quality - excluding the shit we all know.

Let's not forget here that Venom had no intention of remaining kvlt heroes or underground legends. They openly stated in interviews that they wanted to play stadiums and be bigger than Van Halen (or whatever band they used as their point of reference). Clearly, that was never going to happen. I'm just saying that it'd be silly to accuse them of selling out when they admitted from the start that they wanted fame and fortune.

Sabbat is definitly not a venom clone. Never was, really. they do bear similarities to many famous first wave acts (most notably Venom and Mercyful Fate) and they even throw in some obvious tributes to these old bands (the Venom covers, Gezol's wacky attempts at falsetto in some songs), they have a sound that is undeniably Sabbat. they're very similar to Countess in that they are a band that clearly worships at the feet of their predecessors (i don't care if Sabbat formed in 83, they worship at the feet of NWOBHM and Venom) while still managing to have a sound all their own.

Also, I don't care if Chronos want's to be a rock star. I still would rather have the old days back. I cannot deny that, if they managed to get the original line up back together and make something that was at least as good as possessed, I would be overjoyed. it's an unrealistic dream, but it's really the only way I'll be satisfied with anything Venom does. I cannot, no matter how much I try (and why the fuck would I try) to force myself to like this newer stuff that Venom has shat out. It's boring and soulless. That old Venom feeling is gone now. I'm not dissatisfied with these new records because they were released in a decade other than the 80's, I'm dissatisfied with them because they are terrible.

Its sucks because i like Venom very much. But i think this is the end for Venom. They're not that cool as like 20 years ago. but i hope they give us some new tourdates. That would be awesome!

I could cope if they'd do a Running Wild and bring us an awesome live album of all their strongest (new and old) material, then call it quits. I'm sure Cronos could make enough guest appearances to fill up the rest of his career.

I doubt Chronos will end Venom, he didn't when Abandon left for the last time as Mantas. It's not as if Anton was really important, have you seen his guitarist?
