We actually want to get rid of these "with influences" tags. So, either the genre is predominant enough and it will be added on its own right, or it's not and it will be deleted.

Band: Draconic, genre on MA Modern Metal I don't see what that can mean I think it should be changed.

Their current genre is pure metalcore. I've changed their former genre too. From Avant-garde Progressive Atmospheric Death Metal to Industrial/Melodic Black Metal according to reviews.

Oh really? Well I had no idea as to this change of policy...

However, if you are doing that, isn't that rather an added step to find some bands?

For example, let's say we are hypothetically looking for black metal bands with groove metal influences - under the currnet system I could search "black groove" or "groove black" and get back black metal bands with groove metal influences or "black/groove metal or groove/black metal (and a few groove metal bands with black metal influences, I would suppose).

Under this new system, when searching for "black groove" or "groove black" you would miss out on bands labeled as "groovy black metal" because of the change of wording. You would still get back black/groove metal or groove/black metal, but would have to do a second search for anything that's "groovy".

Now, is your intention to simply take out the mention of (hypothetical) groove metal influences completely, or is this new system going to be based upon the assumption many bands will have to be searched for twice?

Just curious for future references...

cheers,
--N

P.S. & Edit (just found a new offender :p ):

14 search results for "Eth"

1. Atrocity (Ger) Death metal (early), Ethno / gothic / industrial (later)
2. Betray My Secrets Ethnic influenced Doom/Gothic Metal
3. Dark Gamballe Death metal with folk, jazz and ethno influences
4. Dark Sanctuary Ethereal Wave/Gothic Neo-classical
5. Forgotten Silence Progressive death/doom/jazz/ethnic/ambient
6. Magovira Death/Doom Metal (early), Ethnic Doom Metal (later)
7. Pleroms Gate Ethnic Influenced Extreme Metal
8. Poropetra Ethnic folk music
9. Raxa Doom Metal / Ethnic Ambient
10. Senmuth Industrial Doom Metal, Ethnic Ambient, Electronica
11. Shiva in Exile Ambient/ethno (early), Gothic/ethno (now)
12. Shturm Black/Death Metal (early), Death Metal with Ethnical elements (now)
13. SpiRitual (Ger) Ethnic Influenced Gothic Metal
14. Tenochtitlan Doom Metal / Ethnic Ambient

Many of these should probably be changed to something more appropriate... folk would probably do in most cases, but I am definitely unfamiliar with these bands (and unsure what "ethno" is)

Nah, the last demo has a bit of a death n' roll feeling to it, but it still seems fine to me to leave their genre as just death metal.

There's nothing really heavy metal about these guys:
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=39529
http://www.myspace.com/deadshapefigure

Thrash Metal would be enough.

I would agree with that. By the way, they're fucking insane. The Grand Karoshi was one of my top albums 2008.

I've listened to both demos a couple more times and then decided to change their genre to Death 'n' Roll.

9 search results for "trib"

1. Ambush (Ser) Death/Tribal Metal
2. In the Nightmare Black Metal (early), Tribal Thrash/Death Metal (later)
3. Neurosis (US) Hardcore Punk (early), Progressive Sludge/Post-Hardcore/Tribal/Ambient
4. One Brick Down Metalcore with Tribal influences
5. Resistant Culture Thrash / Grindcore (early), Tribal music with Grind / Crust and other influences (now)
6. Spirit of the Deep Waters Death/Doom Metal (early) - Tribal Doom Metal (now)
7. Tendencia Death/Thrash/Tribal
8. Tribes of Neurot Dark ambient experimental 'tribal' noise
9. Tribus (early) Tribal Industrial Metal (now) Thrash Metal with Tribal elements

Now, I know tribal has a specific sort of sound, but are these bands all truly tribal and not simply folk metal/folk music with a special name? just curious... that first band especially I am leery of it's genre.

---

3 search results for "other"

1. Lazarus Long Doom Metal with various other influences
2. Resistant Culture Thrash / Grindcore (early), Tribal music with Grind / Crust and other influences (now)
3. Type O Negative Gothic Metal with Alternative, Doom and other influences

same thing with the "various" title, "other" influences is just altogether too vague. These should be changed, as appropriate (and why doesn't TON have any direct mention of punk influences aside from the gothic metal bit?)

---

Nekros Pervertor
Electro/Black Metal/Trance

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=55988

The band's listed genre is taken right from the MySpace page. Band is more of a Raw Industrial-Black Metal sound based on the music on MySpace.

---

2 search results for "electronical"

1. Aeon Vortex Melodic Dark Metal with electronical influences
2. Unhealthy Dreams Black Metal (early) - Electronical Black Metal (now)

Obviously these are simply minor typos - there's no such thing as "electronical"

---

Audioblack
Darkened Progressive/Power Metal
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=105252

The stuff on the MySpace is more like... Experimental/Progressive Metal. There is NO dark metal influences AT ALL... the drummer is quite technical, almost jazzy, and the music is rather strange and out there... generally proggy. I kinda like the reverb on the vocals though; the vocals in general actually.

---

Mahoney
Atmospheric Sludge/Dark Metalcore
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=59914
there is no such genre as "dark metalcore", and the atmospheric sludge metal bit is good enough. Sounds like Isis worship to me.

---

Maniaca Thrash/Death Metal with Dark influences
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=4143

There was not a link to music to be found, but the genre name raised my eyebrow. I have to doubt it's accurate.

---

Manic Movement Dark Thrash/Death/Black/Doom Metal
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=5848
This sounds like Symphonic Gothic Metal, and for a band with basically EVERY other major genre listed, I had to laugh at that.

However, they seem to have gone through a few line-up changes, so perhaps their sound has changed drastically? Definitely needs looking into.

---

Mörksvamp grind (early), dark metal with pop elements
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=40298

I couldn't get the player to work on the listed site, but this genre is making alarm bells ring in my head...

---

Nocturnal Necropsy Black metal (early) - Dark Experimental (now)
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=67278

Additional Info:
Quote:
This is a Black Metal/Ambient project formed by Lord Uhriel of Desecrated Grave and Asmoragoth of Paraphrenia (used to be called Skog). This project was actually the first to be created, a few years before Desecrated Grave or Paraphrenia.

Nocturnal Necropsy's style has changed since the demo, there are two splits to be released this year and on the later of the two, and even more clearly so on the upcoming full-length, the style is "Dark Experimental" (which is an infusion of Black Metal, Ambient, Doom, Darkwave, Free Jazz, Experimental, Noise, etc.)

Now, there is ONLY the demo listed on MA, and besides having an additional info section which breaks the rules, the added genre isn't even applicable because we don't have the music AND it's one that's simply made up by the musician - certainly fodder for the additional notes section, but not appropriate to be listed as such.

I suggest simply put it as "Black Metal/Ambient" (as per the listed demo) and be done with it until this album surfaces.

---

Nowonmai Melodic Heavy/Dark Metal/Hard Rock
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=42421

again, no music, but the genre just sounds... wrong. Should be looked into.

---

The Ninth Path Dark Atmospheric/Melodic Metal
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=83746

This genre is completely misleading... the music here is Melodic Black Metal. Quite good music too, if I may add!

---

Xenesthis Dark Metal, Metalcore
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=44922

This is simply metalcore; there are NO dark metal elements here at all.

--

Also, just a minor nitpick, but...

4 search results for ":"

1. Iris (Rou) Heavy Metal/Hard Rock - now: Pop Rock
2. Source of Sorrow Melodic/Gothic Metal (former: Power Metal)
3. Stentor (Ser) later: Modern Thrash Metal, early: Speed/Thrash Metal
4. Symawrath first : Black Metal; later : Industrial / Electro Dark Rock

I think that these should be cleaned up as per the normal format.

Also, Symawrath has a very strange genre. The one song on the MySpace is on their newer demo, and it sounds like a combination of EBM and industrial rock with some metal riffs, screams and drumming. They should be looked into further, most certainly.

---

Same with these:

8 search results for ";"

1. Akira Takasaki Prog/Hard Rock, Shred/Heavy Metal (early); Alternative Rock/Metal (now)
2. Bad Boat Doom/Stoner Metal; Hard Rock
3. Brats Punk (earlier); Traditional metal/hard rock
4. Profanum (Pol) Black Metal; Dark Ambient/Classical
5. Purgatory's Gate Heavy/Traditional Metal (early); Progressive Black/Death Metal (present)
6. Symawrath first : Black Metal; later : Industrial / Electro Dark Rock
7. Therion (Swe) Death Metal (early); Symphonic/Operatic Metal
8. Tormentor (Hun) Black Metal (originally); Experimental Rock (last album)

the ; should just be changed to a normal ,

---

Anyways, I think that's enough for now...

cheers,
--N

Valdreg Blackened Death Metal, Funeral Black/Doom Metal

20. The Truckers Melodic Thrash Metal/Grind

Asides from the bands that have changed style, I do find it hard to swallow that there are so many melodic bands with grindcore influences - these two elements are rather exclusionary. The only band I am aware of succeeding in this is Lykathea Alflame - and their genre doesn't even list melodic! I would venture to say investigation is needed in all of these cases to confirm the elements of melodic styles and grindcore. Anaxim in particular has a shitty genre description.

I've changed the following:

Resistant Culture (Thrash / Grindcore (early), Grind / Crust (now))
Nekros Pervertor (Industrial Black Metal)
Aeon Vortex (Electronic Black/Industrial Metal) certainly less misleading than the previous genre
Unhealthy Dreams (typo)
Audioblack (Experimental/Progressive Metal) dark metal is not considered as something valid anyway
Mahoney (removed dark)

Maniaca (removed dark influences)

I leave it here for now.

I doubt this need be here.

Trepalium is currently tagged as Brutal Death Metal. I own all 3 albums and I'm not sure how anyone could call this BDM. It's a very melodic and catchy Groove/Death Metal. http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=23963

If there was such a discussion, I'm quite sure I didn't see it.

I'm no specialist in the genre, but as I see it, dark metal is some sort of black / doom, reminiscent of Bethlehem's debut, Dark Metal.

Witcher and I had a minor bitch-off on page 14 of this thread, he said:
http://www.metal-archives.com/guidelines.php
No, it is not. It could be just about anything. Nyaricus, could you please do me a favour and stop commenting site/submission/database related things, about which you do not seem to have the slightest idea?

My take on the genre:
It denotes a fusion of Black, Gothic and Doom Metal with a heavy atmosphere, usually utilized with synths adding in little pieces here and there. The general consensus is with the release of Dark Metal by Bethlehem, this style came to be. Many bands flirt with it, but it's a rather minor (but legit) sub-genre.

So, I dunno. The section in the guidelines Witcher is referencing is talking about "ambiguous" genres, such as stoner, shred, NWOBHM, industrial, crossover, gothic metal and so on... but then again the entire guidelines section is rather outdated :p

Black Metal (1st release) - Black Metal/Dark Ambient (later)
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=9279

only band in archvies with "release" listed in genre; should be changed.

---

2 search results for "metallic"

1. Danzig Heavy Metal - Metallic Doom Rock
2. Purity (Fin) Thrash Metal (early), Metallic Rock (now)

should be changed to something more appropriate. I get what they are trying to imply, but it could be said better.

----

Okay, I have a question... there are so many formats for writing how a band's style has changed... I have a few examples here which are fairly sideline and almost never used and should likely be changed to the more often used "early" > "mid" > "later" format. Also, note that "early" comes up 855 times, when "first" only comes up 49 times - and beginning only 3 times! Likewise, "later" comes up 450 times, "now" comes up 489 times and "last" comes up 8 times... I really think a universally decided-upon format should be used to make sense of all these various bands and their stylistic changes.

hmm..we dont have much music recorded since our first demo, but my band Sledgehammer Autopsy surely needs a genre tag change.

We're listed as brutal death/grindcore, but check out our player: www.myspace.com/sadeathmetal

Would be correct to change us to Death metal, or something along those lines. Opinions?

Changed to just death metal.

Actually, I'm probably mistaken about that supposed discussion about dark metal. Just individual mod's comments.
The rules states dark metal as being ambiguous. I guess it's not as well-defined as other main genres.

I would compare it to being much like viking metal or slam death (despite the latters' purposeful exclusion here) - a few certain elements that come together to form a very niche sound; definable, yet elusive - and generally abused by many bands who are not truly a part of that genre (how many viking metal bands are simply Scandinavian folk metal with no ties to the viking metal sound? TYR used to be listed as progressive viking metal, for example).

Anyways, just my two coppers.

Well, it's not really that important anyway. Most bands that claim to be dark metal can probably be submitted with other genre tags anyway.

Changed.

I've also went through a lot of the changes that were proposed by Nyaricus.

The band Mörksvamp was deleted. It's basically black metal vocals over piano music.

Yeah but shouldn't the bands that are already here as dark metal be changed? I mean there are more than 500.

So here are the first few "dark metal" bands that need to be changed. I'll go through the ones which only have dark metal and no legit genre listed, because those are the most urgent in my opinion.

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=11292
http://www.myspace.com/asorrowfuldream
This is some kind of gothic metal. Gothic/doom maybe?

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=49081
http://www.myspace.com/abigailsmercy
This sounds like something between Sirenia and Motorhead. Heavy/Gothic metal i guess.

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=21123
http://www.myspace.com/abstractsk
Progressive Metal/Rock

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=21083
http://www.myspace.com/advitamaeternam
Gothic/Doom Metal

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=92796
http://www.myspace.com/aetasobscura
Melodic Black Metal

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=25947
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNKTupdm ... re=related
Symphonic Gothic/Death Metal

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=38985
http://www.myspace.com/agonialink
Gothic Metal

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=305
http://www.myspace.com/agalloch
Agalloch is pretty hard to categorize. Their old stuff was Ulverish Folk/Black metal, but now it's Folk/Black/Doom Metal/Post-Rock or something like that.

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=13750
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKBnZeHa-u4
This sounds to me like something melodic death and power metal.

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=54020
http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=18908
Melodic Death/Black Metal

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=19843
http://www.myspace.com/annozero
Some songs are melodeath, some gothic. I suggest Melodic death/gothic metal.

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=68922
http://www.myspace.com/aortamedallo
Melodic Black Metal

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=20359
http://www.myspace.com/aphangakband
Melodic Black Metal

http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=42895

Melodic Death/Black Metal

Ok, this all for now. If you would like to help out, please do so.

I will, eventually, just have to do some school stuff.

If something does come across as truly sounding derived from the sound of Bethlehem's Dark Metal though, don't be afraid to say it. I'm fairly certain most of the 600 or so bands listed are "Dark Metal" are incorrectly so, but it wouldn't hurt to give credit due where earned.

Couldn't Bethlehem be labeled as Black/Doom? I'm not really that familiar with them, but what is on youtube from their first album sounds like black/doom to me.

MMisantropo: You've added one "guitar rock" band. Is it a valid genre?

After five hours of non-stop work, I've managed to go through most bands that Nyaricus posted. Some notes:

01. I didn't touch any "tribal" band.
02. I didn't touch some of those "classical" bands.
03. I didn't touch any "Melodic Grind" bands.
04. All "Half-thrash", "neo-thrash" and "modern thrash" will eventually be changed to "Post-thrash".
05. I'm still not sure if the dates in the genres should be removed. While the standard should be "early", "mid" and "later", dates seem really useful if the genre change is crystal clear.
