I've had a subscription to Metal Maniacs for awhile now, it's really the only publication that I could really get into. Any time I go to the bookstore nowadays all the "metal" magazine have shit in them but Metal Maniacs still has great/underground stuff and an awesome personals section as well. I wish I knew a place to get obscure fan-zines lol.

Obviously your everyday bookstore won't have that :-P If you know of local metal shops in your place, they will definitely have that. I know the local metal shop in my city has loads of underground publications from around the world.

And I don't care what any of you say, I've always loved Decibel Magazine... I love the vibe of the publication and the interviews are always interesting. Plus, it covers stuff outside of just metal, like hardcore, industrial, noise and whatnot.

I used to buy Grind Zone mag. but after while I stopped. Before it was for Metal Hammer...well, I was younger and everything was good to discover new bands.

Yeah, this is the only magazine I get. I really like it, and the CD sampler is really cool, as I usually find at least one band to look further into.

Same, I've discovered a lot of awesome bands I'd never have thought of listening to without hearing them on the Terrorizer CD (Ted Maul eeeeee :D). The only problem with Terrorizer is that I find some of the reviews can be quite inconsistent - there was an issue a few months back with an interview with Cryptopsy about the Unspoken King album which pretty much ripped the fuck out of the band, then a few pages later a review of the album gave it 8/10 and branded anyone who disliked it as a "friendless internet troll" (next issue oddly enough the statement was made that the Cryptopsy album was to metal what getting your balls trapped in a drawer was to procreation :P). That sort of thing doesn't happen often enough to detract from the overall magazine though, beats Metal Hammer anyway.

I enjoy having a physical item as opposed to an online source, though an online source would be preferable, monetarily speaking. Since I can't really cure my addiction and love for magazines and I don't really want to, I go for a mix of both. I don't want to sacrifice too much money, but I don't want to sacrifice information for the simply joy I get from just flipping through the pages of magazines either.

I used to buy Metal Hammer and Revolver, and I still do occasionally, though more for the pretty design and layouts rather than the actual content. Well, that's not completely true, but let's just say that there isn't much either magazine offers that isn't "contaminated" by mainstream influence. So when it comes to finding resources on more underground bands, I rely on Zero Tolerance or Metal Maniacs. I own two issues of Decibel and I would have more, but the few bookstores that supply English books and magazines don't sell them anymore. Not the greatest loss in the world, though they do provide good information and interesting reads.

With Zero Tolerance, I'm somewhat put off by all the coverage on "bestial" black metal bands, but otherwise, I enjoy their articles usually. They cover a fair amount of different subgenres of underground metal, hardcore, and occasionally some noise or power electronics, which is good for me. Can't say I listen to the sample CDs, since I usually search bands up online and listen to songs off their Myspace. That might have to change if I plan on making the money I spend worth it. =P

Terrorizer on occasion, or at least I used to buy it, though it seems to appeal less to me these days.
Zero Tolerance magazine when I have the money and the local stockist can be bothered to stock it.

It depends on what the magazine that supports your scene and the stuff that you're associated with..

Decibel - Simply the best Metal magazine in the US and N.America.. Extreme Metal is their main coverage but they also cover alot of Metalcore/Grindcore/Noise kind of things. They also cover Traditional metal occasionly. Not so underground but still not so mainstream, they kind of have a balance which is why they're the best.

Terrorizer - I think I read it once or twice.. pretty good, of course they pay attention to the Euro Metal scene much more. Alot of people seem to dislike them lately for some reason..

Zero Tolerance - The most underground one comapred to the others I mentioned.. they cover a lot of indie/unsigned bands from all over the world but the writing in general is not that compelling.. but a good magazine overall.

and stay away from Metal Hammer, Metal Edge & Revolver because they are absloute pigshit.

Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles is a really great magazine. They have loads of reviews and interviews with really obscure stuff too. Usually comes with a sampler CD and a pack of stickers. Check it out, I'm pretty sure it's printed in the UK so it's a little more expensive than other but definitely worth it.

Metal Maniacs is a pretty good zine...
They may have some cheap shit, but they have their good shit too.

I read a few excellent interviews with Nachtmystium, Vorkuta, Cephalic Carnage, Obituary, Testament, Leviathan, and Candlemass in there. Two issues has those. Not to mention, the review section is pretty damn good.

I like them alot more than, say, Terrorizer. Revolver has some OK stuff... recently they had an Enslaved interview, and they have ok news under the Black&Death news...

I don't know of any zines really. Gelid Glacier zine is pretty good, considering there is only one issue. The interview with Lycanthropy's Inferis is good.

The only metal magazine I've ever seen for sale is metal hammer, which my friend regularly buys and is pretty shit. It seems to focus a lot on -core shit.

iirc they did a small article about Anaal nathrakh once, which I was pretty surprised by.

I read Terrorizer and have a supscriton to ZT, but I've never even seen an issue. I also waste £4 on Metal Hammer because I want to give myself cancer by smelling the pages.

Most WH Smiths stores stock Terrorizer, which is a better magazine by miles.

I used to read revolver. revolver used to focus on good metal bands. Then, about a 3 or 4 months ago, they completely sold out. They used to have mostly real metal, with some false metal. Now, its mostly false, with some real metal.
Ho hum.

Im considering getting a subscription to Metal maniacs. There was another magazine I was considering... i think it was Metal Edge. I liked Metal Edge a little more I think because it still covered better known bands and nonextreme metal.

I usually buy Terrorizer, Metal Maniacs, BW&BK (when they actually have the CD.), Metal Hammer, Decibel, and Revolver.

Right now, Terrorizer and Decibel are my two favorites. The former's actually gotten me into some bands I wouldn't have listened to otherwise. (Rotting Christ, Septicflesh, Hollenthon, etc)

and the latter is funny, sometimes.

BW&BK is okay, but I hate their layout in the 'News' section. Last time I read, it was just a huge block of text, that was painful to read.

Bill ZeBub's Grimoire of Exalted Deeds, anyone?

I subscribe to Metal Maniacs because it's cheap and now comes with a sampler cd in every issue. I hate Kevin-Stewart Panko's writing, though.

Unrestrained is a really good mag with tons of reviews, a good easy to read layout, and lots of content. The editor just died a month or so ago, though, so I'm not sure what the state of the mag is now.

Terrorizer is good, but it comes out a month late here (US) and it costs $10 an issue. I can buy a new cd (or subscribe to Outburn) for that money. Also, Avi Pitchon has his head so far up his ass that most of his ramblings are completely unintelligible. Trying to make sense of anything he says about Laibach is an exercise in futility.

Speaking of Outburn, they're mostly a -core/emo mag, but they cover a little bit of metal, a subscribtion costs $10, and you get a choice from a host of free cds when you subscribe, and they usually have at least one good metal disc to choose from.

BW&BK just sucks. Expensive, boring interviews, writers who think that Enuff Z'nuff was when music peaked.

There's this mag that comes out about 4-5 times a year called Explicitly Intense, and it's worth buying for the $5 it costs. It's hilariously bad. One issue, if I recall, had the same text for the first two articles, under different headlines and with different pictures. This is on two separate pages. Stuff like this happens all the time. The editor of the mag has the vocabulary of a morbid six year old.

I'll pick up Decibel if there's nothing better on the rack in Barnes & Noble.

How could I forget Unrestrained? That's another magazine I get.

I used to love Explicitly Intense, but then it got boring. You can also tell that their budgeting is very limited, and whoever is in charge of the graphics can't use PhotoShop. (I recall one issue where it was obvious the person had taken a photo of a band, put it into an imaging program, cut out the band, pasted the band into some kind of scenic background. It would have looked decent, except you could see all the jagged edged. Really shoddy work.)

I also hate how they never give scores to their reviews, and that all of the reviews all but sound the same.

Yeah, I remember one issue where every review they printed was overwhelmingly positive. And each one started with a line like '*Band* is not for weak Christians as there [sic] music is like having a chainsaw shoved up your anus'.

Zero Tolerance, and to a lesser extent Terrorizer, for me. I find ZT more thoughtful. The problem with both though is I'm rarely impressed by anything on the CDs they provide with each issue. And ZT is only bi-monthly.

I used to write for EI and I would cringe when the new issue came out as it was so bad. See the last issue with Evergrey on the cover? It looked like it was done in a Commodore or something. Only cover that looked decent was the Testament one that I shot. good times.

I'm finding that with Zero Tolerance and Terrorizer the CDs they provide never seem to have any good bands or bands i then go and check out even more.
