Probably a stupid question but what exactly is modern metal? Is it the modern lyrical content or what? Just out of curiosity.

Lyrical content hardly matters; it's about the sound.

Edit: And the time period, of course.

I think it refers mainly to the time period (hence using the term Modern), though there are some features present in most modern metal. It is generally overproduced, and I don't know about others, but I find vocals often dominate.

Modern Metal refers to the bands that technically are still metal, but don't fall into a traditional genre. It also implies that the similarities in the bands' sound are just that they are all heavy (i.e. rooted in metal), and not as commercial as other mainstream "heavy music."

Diablo are probably a decent example of a modern metal band. Or, the current incarnation of Amorphis.

Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, All Shall Perish and the likes of this kind of music. Metalcore/Deathcore, Groove, and Melodeath seem to be the most popular kinds of music.

No, it won't. "Modern metal" is a broad term - one band cannot represent it.

He will at the very least begin to get an understanding of the concept. You can't understand musical genres by reading about them. It helps but there is no substitute for listening to the bands and becoming acquainted with the sound. Please spend more time contributing thoughtful, constructive content to the forum than policing it.

Nevermore was actually the first band to come into my head when I saw the thread title. That may be because of other people always calling them that, though. I'm pretty sure they have characteristics that people would think of as "modern".

Modern Metal? Depends on how you look at it I guess.

One could say it is metal that follows the current trends in the metal/hard rock scene. i.e. the more mainstream bands.

Or it is just a very general term used to refer to ALL metal that has been produced during this decade.

Modern metal really has no definition other than metal produced in the current times.

One band is not going to create such results.

Instead of telling a veteran member of the board to post thoughtful messages, you should be critiquing your own posts, as you really are wrong, in this case.

I knew someone was going to bring my registration date up. I've been lurking here since 2004. We're derailing this poor guys thread more than we would have if he had just let it slide. Or, better yet, contributed more than a sentence or two himself.

True, but consider this: How about metal from these times that play old-school metal? Deteriorot and Hail Of Bullets, for example? Would they still be "modern" metal because they were released in 2001 and 2008 respectively, or "old-school" metal because of their sound?

I, personally, think it's the first. I think modern metal is more of a "the metal that sales and well-known enough to general public". It doesn't necessarily mean that those are the best bands, just the most "popular".

You can interpret my "quotes" however you would like.

The definitive answer would probably Metallica.

Modern Metal = anything that has melodeath in it or some symphonic gothic wankery. That's how I look at it.

Modern metal as a term means no one thing. It is just what it says; metal that is modern. The meaning varies depending on the context. Someone could use it for all metal made in recent years as opposed to oldschool stuff. Another time it could be used to refer to metalcore and other trendy whathaveyou.

I don't really like this categorisation.
Modern metal ? Old fashioned metal ?
The only thing this can do is to keep away old school metallers (true, they call themselves) from listening to new bands. And of course that's the suckiest thing of all. Refuse something that you have never taste.

Modern metal is more of a term to describe the typical over-processed, over-produced bands that are abound at the moment though, not just new bands in general. If the music is old-school in sound, old-school metallers will listen to it.

If this meaning of 'modern metal' is taken, then there are many chances old school metallers listen to it.
But I don't really think that's the way most of them see it.

Imo, this is a more possible way they see it:

I can't define this so called "modern metal" but i think Neuraxis is a perfect example of this. I just feel so.

I'm not sure if modern metal can be easily summed up, I tend to look at the modern thing as prefix for a particular subgenre. You've got tech death and modern tech death, you've got thrash and you've got modern thrash and so on. The modern tag has a lot of differences from subgenre to subgenre and can't be summed up with a global rule, but they usually have a loud, clear sound with lots of modern production touches, such as the extremely over focussed and loud harmony guitar tracks and clicky bass drums for instance. Musically things are different too, but it's difficult to find any traits which effect all of the modern type bands. Hardcore vocals tend to be popular, whether the band be death metal or groove metal, most of them with a have a horrible hardcore bark.

I don't feel that popularity or money making capability really comes into the equation, I'd call Emeth a very modern death metal band, but at the same time I couldn't see them selling hundreds of thousands of albums.

Of course there a few genres, such as groove metal and metalcore which are basically entirely made up of modern metal traits, but there are only a few of those.

Technically, yes. The term is not really official and doesn't really mean anything, anyway. The bands didn't release their music in 1991, they released it in the later half of the '00s, so they are modern. People will mean different things when they say it - as I have - but it's really not a concrete term and shouldn't be used to classify bands.

It's hard to put a finger on it.

Modern metal/rock to me is rock with that shitty 90s vibe.

Let's say AC/DC versus Nickelback.

This is pretty stupid, guys.

Modern Metal= Metal that has been made recently.

It's pretty straightforward. it's like you guys are arguing about what "80s Metal" means.

I use "modern metal" to describe the new types of metal such as new style death metal or metal core. Overproduced, bland, and lacking in melody. If a thrash album has just been released I consider it "traditional metal" because it is of the older style (probably over produced too though).

Modern means contemporary, basically, just made recently. A modern metal band just means a band that is currently active or only recently formed, recently meaning in the '00s.

When people say something has a "modern sound", they generally mean what half the people here mean, bands with terribly loud "clean" production, which is what most people here are thinking of when they say "overproduced".

When people say modern metal, you have to look at the context, because on one hand they could be referring to any band in the current metal scene, or they could mean the the sound I described above, which doesn't only apply to metal... it applies to most music these days.

You'll know what sound when you hear it, its that quality that's not only present in all -core out there, but also in a lot of brutal death metal and symphonic black metal of recent times.
