I probably shouldnt bitch since I had no idea this was even going on - but poop!

looks like I am going to have to find out who Slauter Xstroyes and Adramelch are - I have to admit my ignorance on them (plus my failure to procure anything by The Lord Weird Slough Feg, Acid, Crimson Glory, Brocas Helm, and a couple of the NWOBHM that I really do love, but need to keep digging into), but it looks like I have everything else covered

Thank you for pointing this out, didnt even notice. Thundersteel at 79 is really a crime against humanity. Thats such a classic album too, should be somewhere in the top 20 at least or even higher. Crystal Logic at number 16 was a rather pleasant surprise, its so underrated that I thought it would be much lower. It seems that almost everyone I know hates Mark Shelton's vocals.

Powerslave taking the top spot doesn't piss me off too much, but I'm seriously the only one that voted Melissa for the top spot? It still got second place, which is rightfully deserved, but still.

The thing is that it's hard to get straight heavy metal, and so I had a lot of speed metal in mine as well. If I thought that it leaned more towards power or thrash, I didn't include it, hence the omission of classics like Painkiller and Walls of Jericho on my list. Same deal with Sabbath, the Ozzy era was far doomier than the Dio era, so I stuck with that. Also, not a single one of my albums was a one voter! I'm such a conformist!

Also, for some reason, I was really worried that Diamond Head was going to be overlooked. Props to Aargh and aag for recognizing the brilliance that is Cloven Hoof!

They split up in the mid 80s and the reformed in the late 80s with a completely different line-up, I believe.

If I hadn't gone with Mercyful Fate's first EP for the top spot, I would've put Melissa there instead. I did a bit of compromise with some albums, putting them lower and higher depending on how high I put another by the same artist, and so forth...

Well it's really more of a power metal album (Thundersteel, I mean), so that may have detered some from including it.

I'm glad Iced Earth didn't get votes. I mean, sure the list is filled up with Maiden and Priest, but that's way better than bottom-of-the-barrel pandering like IE. Miles and miles better. Seriously.

Grave Digger aren't good enough to be on a Best Heavy Metal albums survey, even though I do love them a lot. Reading through the list, this is actually a great list and includes many works that are vital to any metalhead's collection. Good job, guys.

Only real what the fuck is Balls to Picasso. I don't hate the album, but I cannot come up with a response to exactly how weird it is seeing it lumped in there with all these classic styled albums. I mean...what?

true, at least Chemical Wedding was higher, but still, to me Balls... is a lot of filler

also, glad to see Dio era Black Sabbath above Ozzy era, though I wuld have liked to see more Ozzy solo stuff represented on there

86) 20 - (0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-1-0) "Dehumanizer" - Black Sabbath
87) 20 - (0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-1-0) "Balls to Picasso" - Bruce Dickinson

It looks as if they got exactly the same votes, so why is Transcendence on 85) and Balls to Picasso on 87)?


Piece of Mind is at no. 25. I'll double check to see I didn't miss a vote.

As for the three you mentioned; I wasn't that concerned, being so far down the list, whether one album was in front of the other.

Call them =85th if it pleases you.

I guess thats the side of heavy metal that I like, but I think all I have mentioned are enough traditional/classic heavy metal to qualify (yes with plenty of speed/power qualities, though)

I'm sad to see no one else loved "Accident of Birth" by Bruce Dickinson or "Thunder in the East" by Loudnes....

I'm also surprised to see "kings of Metal" higher than "Hail to England"


But what you gonna do...

Overall though, it's a solid list. I obviously love "Powerslave" at #1.

It's a pity I didn't have time to enter. Good results, although Angel Witch should have rated better and Painkiller needs to be about ten places higher. To be honest I find some of the more recent Maiden albums a more enjoyable listen than the classic ones. Don't hate me for that, as I like them all and spent actual money on buying every one of them.

I triple checked and missed one vote for Piece Of Mind. The correction sees it move from 25th to 19th and from 123 points to 152.

If there are any other queries I'd be more than happy to check the results.

And as Nolan_B suggested, if there is interest in a survey of albums of all genres, I'd happily take on the task.

I stayed out of this because I don't consider myself too knowledgable in heavy metal, I am more of a thrash metal/death metal guy. But seeing the results, maybe I should have voted after all because the top 25 is none too different from what I would have voted for. Big names dominating the list, with only a scattering of obscure picks here and there. Bad, because I had hoped this might provide me an easy alternative to reading through the heavy/power/speed thread. :lol:

Slauter Xstroyes are cool, although they have elements of Power and Prog too.

"Tears of the Dragon" justified my vote, plus, as a Maiden fanboy, I had to give Bruce's solo career some love, right?

Overall, this is a really good list. I especially like it since, as sacrilege as it sounds, the early/NWOBHM/early power metal scene is my favorite type of music, even over the death stuff. I find Powersalve to be Maiden's strongest, so I'm happy to see it take #1, and I generally agree with most other listings. The only thing I'd really do is switch Melissa with Don't Break the Oath, and give Scorpions some more love, but I'm generally happy here.
