So here's the final list; checked and double checked.

46 individuals voted and no votes were discarded, hence some of the 'strange' album choices present. In most cases however, they were isolated votes and so didn't figure in the final list.

It's probably because that album rules. I'm still a bit surprised to see it high enough to be up there with the classics though.

Pretty much all the albums I voted for ended up high or at least semi-high, so that's nice. But then again, I voted mostly for classic albums, so I guess that's to be expected.

I don't think I was the only one who voted for anything though. I guess I'm just too mainstream for my own good sometimes... ;)

Well, Seventh Son didn't get #1, but it did make the top 10, and still, Iron Maiden is still the best band ever since Powerslave got the winner spot. I wish Ample Destruction and The Crimson Idol had been higher, but this was pretty damn good; most of the albums in my list got high.

I fucking love this survey.

I was kind of surprised to see Powerslave on the #1 spot. Would have expected Seventh Son, Heaven and Hell or Stained Class there instead.

I don't like how Don't Break the Oath ranks better than Abigail, and Kings of Metal better than Hail to England.

I'm sorry, but there's a mistake. At least two people (Avaitor and myself) nominated Piece of Mind, yet you have it among the single-vote albums.

Edit: five people at least.

Edit 2: How did you determine the relative rank among these three albums?

Yeah, Iron Maiden among other bands will have scored artificially low since there was a limit of only two albums per artist. These surveys are geared more towards making a recommendation list with varied artists than actually figuring out the "top albums."

At least the Iron Maiden and King Diamond fanboys didn't have a chance to ruin the whole thread, haha. It's true that bands with only a couple of albums had an unfair advantage against bands like Maiden (which may explain Court in the Act being in the top 20), but I think the list turned out to be pretty good in the end. Certainly better than most of the other surveys. I just wish more people would have participated this time.

The biggest screw-up on this survey was Manowar. I really hoped there were more metalheads who took them for what they are: one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time, right up there with Maiden and Priest. They're not some some cute little band to put 13th on your list. Kings of Metal at 26th! Shame on you all! :nono:

I had Powerslave at #10 but I easily could have had it higher depending on my mood when I made up my list. It's such a sentimental favorite of mine. It's literally THE album that got me into Metal many years ago. Sure, I already listened to Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, but when I finally got around to Iron Maiden, Powerslave bowled me over and turned me into a full fledged Metalhead.

I agree with you, Battle Hymns was too low. I feel like a jackass because I love Manowar and I realized right after I sent my list that I hadn't voted for any of their albums.

I'm not surprised at all that Powerslave is number one. It is definitely the best Iron Maiden album there is and why not the best heavy metal album too. Top 10 is pretty good, perhaps just too many Judas Priest albums. Also it is wonderful to see Manilla Road at number 16, it could be higher though.

I agree with you RageW, Ample Destruction would have deserved a better position.

More people need to learn about the greatness of Manilla Road.
I'm surprised Powerslave did so well -- except for the first two and the last two tracks, I've always found it inferior to all the albums before it.
I'm kind of pissed off that I learned about Dark Quarterer only after I sent my list. If I had heard any album of theirs before, it would have definitely been among the top 5 of my list.

But his list gave me the idea: We should make a survey after all of the major genres are covered, that is Greatest Metal Album. Everything included.

That album probably would've made it to my list, but I haven't found a copy anywhere and I'm not going to give an album a vote that is based on Real Media files or something.

Kind of strange that the only Pagan Altar album that got more than one vote was the first one. It's of course their most legendary release, but also way too doomy to be on that list, unlike the later albums which I included on my list.

No one else voted for Sarcofagus or Death SS either. Lame.

Earlier The Number Of The Beast was the best in my opinion, but it gets kinda worn out after many listens. I think the only filler song on Powerslave is 2 Minutes To Midnight, the guitar sounds a bit generic. Would be great if Revelations from Piece Of Mind was on Powerslave instead of 2 Minutes To Midnight. Might sound a bit crazy but thats what my ideas usually are like.

For the record, I didn't vote for the early Sabbath albums because I wasn't sure if they really counted as "Heavy Metal," because while they are certainly HEAVY, I have them listed as Doom Metal in Winamp. Counting them, though, I would have bumped the debut up quite a bit. Just saying.

That said, I pretty much agree with the top ten. My only real gripe is that Unleashed In The East is not in the top ten. Or even twenty. Or even FORTY. Maybe it's because there was some confusion over the inclusion of live albums?
