Most if not all of his ideas make a lot of sense at the core, but prove to be incredibly naive when applied to the context of actual reality, likely due his detachment from the real world during the time he formed said ideas.

Varg Vikernes the man was the worst thing to ever happen to black metal. Burzum on the other hand is some great stuff.

Highly unlikely. You can't even compare something as obvious as Abbath' contribution to turning black metal into a circus show for children to a few wacky political views.

The fact that his ideas are naive when applied to reality (which I don't particularly believe either, though that may be because I shaped some of them to my own preferences) doesn't necessarily make Varg a moron.

Varg is the one who turned it into a circus. Black metal was never supposed to be about constant media coverage and a big time ratings booster. Once all the churches were lit up and the murder of Euronymous happened, all these little kids with their D&D fantasies started to pop out of the wood work with their corpsepaint and home made spiked armbands, playing third or forth rate 'black' metal.

Varg is a great musician and his ideas also have merit. He's an idealist, so obviously some of his ideas are far from reality but that doesn't make them any less worthy. As for his impact on black metal, well, I hate to think of what Euronymous would have become nowadays anyway.

I love Burzum and I love Mayhem. The OP is either a troll or is wanting to drum up a discussion about a rivalry that doesn't exist. The way I see it, it's a tragedy whatever led to the fatal incident was between them and it turned horrific obviously but had nothing to do with actual black metal music.

How about Old Funeral? Worth a listen, definitely.

Putting aside my surprise at the mods' inaction at the general lack of decorum displayed by the OP'er (troll or otherwise), I would say that Varg is one of the more reasonable 'racists' out there, whether it be on race or other topics. Mind, I did read some excerpt from his book which did sound pretty moronic. But the stuff submitted on burzum.org I have some appreciation for.

Most probably see him as this nutter in prison, but I believe that sort of confinement gives time to reflect on one's thoughts and convictions.

I really think Burzum is overrated, since I started to listen to BM, everyone advised me to listen to Burzum and Mayhem, all I can say is that both bands are worth shit to me. Ok, some (or many) will hate me for this, but I don't own any album from these bands and I can't appreciate their music. (same with Emperor if some want to know).

If this were FMP I'd say this thread was destined for "win"; however, as we're on metal archives I'll say it's more likely destined for "lock" and possibly "ban".

Yep. Threads about one Count Grishnackh are usually discouraged because we all know who he is and his reputation precedes him. Hence, they become predictable.They don't lead to any real discussion of merit. If you want to talk about certain Burzum stuff for the music or have any questions on it then start a thread about that but most likely it is advisable to use the Black Metal Help Thread.

Yeah, seems like he always change is mind. At the beginning he was really into the black metal scene and all, you know he played in Old Funeral, his band (he wore corpsepaint) played for mayhem and all. Then he had some kind of disgust for the scene, probably jealousy, always said he didn't understand why mayhem was more popular than burzum. Anyways, same thing for his ideals. I totally agree about him being a moron. Only his failed escape attempt proves it. (and smiling after hearing his sentence)

He's on good terms with the Mayhem guys. And Burzum got plenty of attention, he was even considering doing live shows. His "detachment" from the scene is of his own volition, not because he doesn't get attention. And Old Funeral were a death metal band anyway.

Burzum got attention because of the church burnings and euronymous murder, he wasn't that popular, Mayhem were the most popular, they were bringing everyone into the scene. Deathcrush wasn't more black metal and they probably thought it black metal. Black metal evolved, it was only influenced from venom and bathory who were NWOBHM and thrash in essence. Black metal wasn't defined well yes because they talked about satan and wore corpsepaint. Black metal didn't appeared from nowhere. I can imagine with no problems Varg being a troubled kid who wanted attention.

Be honest now, Mayhem, Burzum, Emperor and a slew of other prominent BM figures were burning churches and the like back in their early days. None of the bands were getting attention for their music, Burzum and Mayhem just BOTH got attention from the publicity of the murder (which, as a believer of Varg's side of the story was not one he willingly plotted to do).

I mean in the scene, Mayhem were far more popular than Burzum and after the murder, like it was already said, Varg was some kind of hero for many angst filled teens.

After the murder Varg was hated by a good chunk of the black metal community for killing one of their idols. Angsty teens listening to Burzum in Norway, in the 90s of all times? I admit that Norway has the biggest BM scene, but I really doubt the first thing an angst-ridden 15 year old boy would look for was some of Varg's shrieky black metal. Maybe some sad classic rock song at best, or maybe an early death metal one.

Well I've seen that in some documentary, anyway, lately a lot of killings happened and the killer always became some sort of hero to some people.
