a lot of lyrics are obscure, either deliberately or because the listener doesnt have the same knowledge/experiences in order to correctly interpret/understand their intended meaning

this may just turn into a guessing-game, but I think it could also be interesting as to what people see in lyrics

I hope people can list some songs (please no more than two per post) that are semi-known (stuff that more than a few people here would have heard prior and had time to dwell on) that they don't know what the author was trying to convey with the lyrics

my two that I hope I can get some interpretations on are:

Overkill - Dreaming in Colombian
Overkill - Under One

but feel free to add any songs you want interpreted even if you dont about these two - just try to give back if you have an idea about anything anyone submits

Good idea for a thread, I like trying to interpret lyrics sometimes, especially in bands that gave particularly poetic lyrics, I find Gothic metal can be quite good for lyrics.

Shame on you, einvolk. Don't you know that this can amount to little more than character assassination?

I still can't make heads or tails of any Opeth lyrics.

Except for a couple on Still Life where I can decipher some guy who is in love with Melinda...

I think "Dreaming in Colombian" is about cocaine somehow. Kind of makes sense, since Colombia is involved in all that business.

I believe the plot of the album is on wikipedia.

I would think so based on the lines about bugs on his skin. Feeling like there are bugs on your skin is a common syptom of withdrawal.

Edit: "All my whites turned to black" - Dilated pupils?

I know this thread is supposed to be for semi-obscure songs, but Dio's Holy Diver has been bugging for a while.
The most common interpretation I heard is that its about Heroine addiction ('Ride the tiger' is supposed to be slang for shooting up). But songfacts.com lists another explanation where its supposed to be about his descent (dive) to hell, with the tiger being the sea beast. Anyone has any insight or read/heard/saw Dio give an explanation to the song? Or is it simply with no deeper meaning?

actually I was trying to avoid the unknown demo bands, or people trying to promote their own "cryptic writings"
I would like to see stuff like Iron Maiden or Metallica or whatever

but I see the Dreaming in Columbian cocaine connection, but I guess acid also (dilated eyes, bugs)

other people should put songs they wonder about also, or am I the only one?

I believe someone posted part of an interview with Dio in which he explained the meaning of "Holy Diver". I'm not sure what kind of post it was in... I just remember someone saying they were interested in what "Holy Diver" was supposed to be about and another guy posted that Dio quote. It's probably still around somewheres...

Quite a few of their songs seem to be something to do with love, I think Black Rose Immortal and Porcelain Heart are, just off the top of my head, there are probably others.

Almost all of their songs have to do with love. Where have you been? lol.

It sounds to me like "The Leper Affinity" is about necro-love, though:

Quote:
We entered Winter once again
Naked, freezing from my breath
Neath the lid all limbs tucked away
This coffin is your abode from now
and onwards
Your body is mine to avail
Such a tragic sight you are
Slave under my creed
Spurring me with those tears
I am beyond death
Midst a dreaming affinity
Saving strength now, faint whispers
Come erotic communion in its splendour
Fever mirrored ghosts
Night time consolation, cross the line
Draw murder into art
Sleep inside through days
In the wake of this relief
Shivering, longing for more
Insanity at it's peak
Love me to my death

Well I was going to say most of them were but I didn't just in case a lot of them weren't and I would look like a fool.

A lot of Cradle of Filth alludes to various things with references I simply can't wrap my head around. I know Dani takes much stock in writing about Elizabeth Bathory and features characters and ideas from H.P. Lovecraft's work, but I still have absolutely no idea what he is talking about in some of his songs.

I really like how Dani's writing flows and whatnot, it'd just be nice to not have to cart around Webster's every other word.
