Yeah, it probably is. I can't understand how it is appealing to some people. What the hell do they like about it???

I think Dagon's vocals are fantastic and don't believe they sound a lot like Abbath. One day you may follow him into his glorious devil-imbued trance and suddenly you will be croaking "in the name of Satan" right along with him. I just love this band... seen them live twice and that is really a remarkable experience. It's quite something when Dagon goes from shouting like some friendly and dangerous drug lord to the audience about their Saatanic and heathen pride to croaking in that strange, warbling, monotonous and coldly emotionless voice within a matter of a second or two.

I find Tuomas' vocals on the album 'Angels Fall First' by Nightwish absolutely cringeworthy. Every time I hear the album I wonder what the hell came over the band to let him sing. His terrible vocals reach an amazing low on the song 'The Carpenter' which is one of the most out of place and generally awful songs I've ever heard on an otherwise decent album.

dunno, dude. think a lot of people would tend to disagree. it can be hard to get used to the kings unique style. i remember first getting "abigail" in 2002, with a bunch of other classic heavy metal albums, and was a little put off by the vocal style, but as someone mentioned earlier, it does tend to grow on you. now i love every minute of the king, and have every album. a good approach for those interested in getting into the king, that may be put off by the vocal steez, is to get the Mercyful Fate albums, and concentrate more on the Guitar riffage, and the somewhat chaotic song structure, as well, of course, as the epic horror/satanic themes. thats what kindof got me real stoked on MF and the King.

having said that, if you dont like it, thats fine too.

More of a chuckle than a cringe, but the satanic cookie monster in Deicide.

King Diamond makes me cringe because so much of his stuff is pretty good that if he would limit himself to a pitch that normal humans can make it would make listening so much easier. And the neighbourhood dogs wouldn't bark so much.

Rodney Dunsmore. Particularly on Devastation's first album. On that album the band's playing pretty standard death/thrash metal and you're thinking, hey maybe when the vocalist comes in I'll like this better. Then Dunsmore comes in and he's literally talking. For the whole album. I mean, you have to be kidding me, a death/thrash band. Imagine if Morbid Saint or Demolition Hammer had a vocalist that just talked, they would be nowhere near as good. The guy puts no effort at all and it's not like he's playing an instrument while singing, vocals are his sole duty. Thankfully, he "improves" over time, putting just a tiny bit more effort each album, but this guy seriously sucks and brings an otherwise great band down.

No, it's ok, I'll try listening to some of those first then. I just thought "Abigail" would be this amazing album (10 reviews, 96% average) but was quickly put off by the vocals. I'll give those other ones a go though.

There are few things more metal than hearing the King shriek over those demonic guitar attacks on Don't Break the Oath.

I think the King just takes time. I know when I first picked up "Abigail" I thought the music was awesome, but I was definitely a little put-off by the vocals. However, the music convinced me to trudge along, and continue to listen. After a while, I started to actually really like the vocals. He's by no means my favorite vocalist, but I now do like his vocals (though the guitars are still the main draw for both bands - for me)....

The vocals in the original Angry Video Game Nerd theme are somewhat cringeworthy.

Chuck's voice really grates on me in a way that I fucking love!

I like death metal bands to use other vocal styles than guttural growls. Atheist are good for this too.

I can see why people don't like it, too, but that doesn't mean it isn't one of the most metal things ever. In fact, the fact that so many people find his voice unappealing just shows how metal it is: he doesn't sound polished or listenable by the mainstream, and while I'm not claiming that people who don't like him are mere mainstream losers, metal is not a very appealing form of music. It's supposed to sound dirty and underground and unappealing.

I worship Mercyful Fate/King Diamond. But that 'Grandmaaaaa' scream on ' Them' is just horribly, painfully awkward. Still, his vocals on 'Don't Break The Oath' are fucking great! None more metal. Proscriptor's vocals aren't too....great..either. Absu is a killer band, though. But I have yet to 'dig' his vocals. Original, sure. But still.

Post-thrash Metallica vocals make me cringe everytime I hear them. When St. Anger came out back in 2003, the radio stations would just oversaturate but when the song Some Kind of Monster would come on, it would clear the room at my workshop. James Hetfield used to be decent but now they are just so annoying and predictable and only make me yearn for Ride the Lightning. No wonder he always gets flashed with laser pointers at alot of shows. Because they want him to stop the show so they can catch a break from his shot singing.

I'm not sure what happened to James. He went from a fairly distinct shouty thrash style to some sort of gravelly "Yeeeaaaaah."

Perhaps it was all the booze.`

That reminds me also on the Some Kind of Monster movie where a couple fans asked him to record him saying "yeeeahhhh" on a tape recorder as part of the autograph. That said it all right there.

I hate Behexan and the vocals are pretty bad but they don't remind me of any of that. The Cephalotripsy dude sounds like that as many other bands like them do.

Inquisition (wtf?)
Rotting Christ (the only way he'll loose his accent is with the aid of an axe)

The Wizar'd. I think I may have mentioned them before, but the vocalist really is fucking terrible. It's a damn shame too, because The Wizar'd is an (otherwise) fine Doom outfit.

No specifics, but pretty much really crappy female fronted metal bands ("gothic" lol) and a lot of thrash metal bands... idk why but I just can't stand a majority of those vocals. :(

I have heard some people ripping on female vocals. I have to agree, but I always find myself making an exception for Battlelore. I don't know what it is about her, but I like Sword's Song so much I listen to it over and over. That's really the only female stuff I can tolerate, Arch Enemy freaks me out....really...
