I've been watching the HBO John Adams mini-series, and I really love the music that plays during the opening credits (plus all the slogans like "Dont tread on me" and "Join or Die"). Now, we all know about Viking metal, but I've never really been into that - maybe because, well, I'm American, not Scandinavian. So, is there anything similar to Viking metal but more relevant to battle songs from the US Revolution or Civil War era? Just a thought.

The obvious Glorious Burden by Iced Earth. It's kind of average to below-average though. I'm sure there's a lot more but I don't keep up with this sort of thing.

It's much more interesting than that viking nonsense, anyway.

I have a song with my band entitled "Under the Bloody Banner" which is inspired by a nightmare I had as a child which involved legions of American Revolution-esque soldiers marching so loud that that was the only noise I could hear - booted feet marching in unison. Scary fucking nightmare.

Yeah, pretty much agreed, and fixed.

I could've sworn I knew at least one other, but I think it's just that shitty album.

I've added a link to this YouTube video in my original post. BTW, I listened to some samples from the Iced Earth album - nope, not even close to what I am looking for.

There's always that Guns and Roses song called 'Civil War'. Haha. :)

I believe Arghoslent have some songs about these things, but I'm not 100% certain.

Viking metal is all about mythology. I don't think there is any real thematic equivalent in American history. Maybe an epic Mormon Metal retelling of Joseph Smith finding the gold tablets

The majority of the album is quite bad. But the last three trilogy songs are amazing. "High Water Mark" alone was reason enough for me to buy the album. What an epic, EPIC song.

Well, it's kind of funny, because the American equivalent in some cases would be Christian Metal.

The Glorious Burden was a brilliant concept which kind of suffered from the fact of Iced Earth being involved with it. As for anything else... I don't know, Bolt Thrower? I'm out of ideas.

You'd think so, but as far as I can recall, they don't. It's pretty odd, I don't know of anything besides that Iced Earth album dealing with these topics!

Iced Earth's The Glorious Burden was a good album within the certain concept you're looking for, songs like Declaration Day where Ripper hits those fucking highs and then the Trilogy which lacks something and almost runs it's course for being so long but is still enjoyable.

The album as a whole is damn boring, but you gotta admit that "Don't Tread on Me" is fuckin' cool.

I was reading reviews of the John Adams' soundtrack on Amazon, and here's one that summed up my thoughts pretty well on the opening title sequence:

Quote:
The Opening Titles track, perhaps my favorite, is an energetic and melodious blend of violins, whistles, drums and horns that has a distinctly American sound to it. Frankly, this song makes me want to start a revolution myself!

I want this, but metal.

I think a closer equivalent would be any songs that might exist about native American mythology. I seem to recall a thread about just that a long time ago and there was at least one band who incorporated such themes (and possibly music). I can't remember who it was though.

As for the civil war, Slave Whipping Blasphemy have a song called "Abraham Lincoln, I Fucking Hate You". But I doubt it includes any civil war era themed music.

Someone else said this in a thread about a year ago. It was a unique thought, imo, but one which has never been done, shall we say.... tastefully.

I've had the idea of doing something like that. An album of America's colonial/imperial Christian history from a secular perspective.
