19 valid votes were cast. Due to the limited number of votes I was pretty lenient in terms of eligibility. A few of the lists had errors such as more than two albums by the same artist, artists who weren't on the archives, putting the same album on more than once, and not having a full 15. In all of these cases, I just didn't count the erorrs. It was a tough decision for me to make, but I feel in the end it was more beneficial to the list, than it was hurtful. There was one more vote, but it was rejected because it came in after the 5 day deadline (unfortunately only by about four hours).

134 distinct albums were named, but 93 of these only had one vote, and thus I discarded them from the final list (just think of it like when someone makes a motion, it has to be seconded to be recognized... something like that). However, they are still listed at the very bottom of this post. So, only 41 albums are ranked and detailed here.

Again, although I'm fairly certain that the tallying of the individual lists was more or less accurate, I don't claim this to be a perfect tallying. So... all individual lists have been posted on the survey thread just in case anyone wants to see them.

Enjoy...!

I don't see why not, some people might hate folk metal, but fuck them. It's still Metal.

Edit: By the way, we should do one for Heavy Metal eventually, too.

No surprise at what's at the top, not complaining either.

Assuck and Nasum need more respect though.

List seems quite good, but all those people who voted for Necroticism should fucking kill themselves now, how people say that as a grind album I have no idea. Hell, Symphonies could only just fit under the grind label.

The first three albums are really amazing but everything after that is too death metal for me.

Why is Necroticism up there? It's pretty much the first album where Carcass went pure death metal.

I'm not too "up" on the Intestinal Disgorge discography, but the transition i have heard between the material released on the '5 Most Devastating Bands On The Planet - Split' and 'Vagina' is most pleasing for me. For what the album is, is written incredibly well. Im sure it would garner a lot of trash reviews from people on this board, but i think its fantastic, short, insulting and quick to the point grindcore. It doesnt do anything outstandingly new, but its a solid aggressive outburst that i always find a blast to listen to. And in regards to albums of this style, it manages to keep me listening to the end, which is a pretty good feat, as im a victim of short attention span.

What I've heard off Vagina is too coherent, but they're a different band nowadays so I guess I can respect that. The first three Intestinal Disgorge releases are very sick, evil, and uncomfortable to listen to, genuinely some of the nastiest and most disturbing music I've ever heard. The whole style of noise/death/grind was very unique and atmospheric. Whore Splattered Walls is probably the best; it treads a very fine line between being too songy and too noisy without ever crossing into either, making for an almost unbearably chaotic, predatory listen. What a great band. I haven't heard Sociopath and they said they were moving a bit in the direction of the older shit, so maybe I'll check it out.

In regards to the list, looks pretty much like i expected, with the top very much dominated by the more traditional sounding grindcore bands. It seems pretty clear the grindcore tastes of people on the board.

I didnt vote cos many of the albums i would have chosen aren't listed on the site (but i must say i am surprised with some of the bands that are on here that i didn't realize).

Surprised bands such as Bile, Hemdale, Vaginal Carnage, The Kill, Carnal Diafragma, Captain Cleanoff, Blood Duster, Plasma, Mortician, Neuro-Visceral Exhumation, Mucupurulent, Pungent Stench failed to make any appearance on the list.

If this kind of survey has been done for death metal, could someone send me a link to that if it's not too much trouble? I can't find it through the search function.

Well, I don't think Pungent Stench is really grind. And Mortician aren't very highly thought of here, so not so much of a suprise.

Hmm..."The Matter of Splatter" is merely a song. I think the person who voted for it meant to say the Anatomy is Destiny album. Should it count as a two-vote album?

I find Pungent Stench as one of those bands that really walk the line between genres, not decisively falling too much into one category or the other. The encyclopedia says death metal, and im not concerned enough to argue the point.

CMMMMMMOOOOOOOONNNNNNN!!!!! Is it too much to ask for one Mortician fan? :) The other theory i have as to why they didnt get a vote. All the albums sound the same, so its just too damn hard to pick one favorite :p

No complaints here - this is not a grind site, so that fact that there was no death metal until #9 makes me happy. There is a good dose of grind in the One Vote section as well...

Nice one Lyrici17

Agreed. That'd be completely stupid.
I think it'd be interesting to do one for metal albums pre-1981 or something.

Pre 85 punk would be cool, too. Most of this site seems anti punk but we can all agree on Siege and Discharge.

I definitely think a Heavy Metal survey is needed, to be honest I probably wouldn't be able to vote in it because my knowledge of traditional heavy metal is quite limited, but that's precisely the reason why I think there should be a survey, so that I can expand my heavy metal collection. Heavy Metal survey ftw!!

How about a plain Metal survey encompassing all genres?

The flamewar of all flamewars. Plus it would be way too broad and thus time-consuming to collate all data.

There is a locked thread from this summer that is close to this. The premis was 6 CDs from 6 Genres - pick one of each. It was pretty cool and actually came out with some content as opposed to being another senseless list thread.

Good luck searching for it - I don't speak "MA search engine."
