What are some of those songs that, when you are blazed, seem so perfect? So symbolic? Powerful? What is your experience like when listening to certain metal songs under the influence of marijuana?

When I am stoned, songs seem to have so much more meaning. Does anyone else have these kind of experiences?

I'm straight-edge myself, but my buddy who smokes says that anything experimental and trippy/progressive/doomy/instrumentals/weird pedal effects, just weird shit like that makes him go insane. Go to the Doom/Stoner thread, it should help quite a bit.

Kyuss, Sleep, Cathedral ... the predictable stuff really. For some reason Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales also sounds great while being high.

Yeah, I'd rather listen to Shpongle.

http://www.myspace.com/shpongleuk

Check out "My Head Feels Like A Frisbee".

For metal, traditional metal is always fun. Manilla Road's "Mark of the Beast" is an experience high.

It works fine for me, but we're all different huh? Some of my friends said that listening to death metal while high can be fun. I'd think that that would give one a bad experience.

I'd just listen to the bands you normally listen to. People put too much emphasis on making sure everything is trippy when they get stoned.

Honestly to me I still listen to the same stuff I would if I were sober; it just sounds like 10X better. People might say some slow, sludgy, spacy music is better, but for me, it's thrash till death, whether I'm high or not.

I like both! It makes normal listening habits more interesting, but I also like to experiment with "different" stuff.

I also find some music I like while sober is annoying high. And vice-versa, of course.

Not at all. And if it does, just turn it off. Atheist is always a pleasant mindfuck, though even stuff like Pavor can be stimulating and wonderful on weed.

Death/doom is recommended, too, its intensity is intensified, so to speak.

On the other hand, try listening to Mekong Delta after a couple of joints and you won't get enough of it. "I'M THE CURE" dum-dumdum dum dumdum dum-dumdum; those riffs and solos - amazing!

The other day I listened to 3 Cannibal Corpse albums in a row with a buddy of mine who isn't really into Death Metal, but he thoroughly enjoyed them high.

From my personal experience, these albums sound interesting while high (though some of them might seem a tad unexpected :P):

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Filosofem and Hildskjalf
Manilla Road - Crystal Logic
Electric Wizard - Everything, but Dopethrone and the debut especially.
Arckanum - Fran Marder
Darkthrone - The later punkish stuff, even if it's better combined with alcohol.
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon and the later ambient stuff.
Sunn 0))) - The stuff that's not mixed with black metal, but Flight of the Behemoth especially.
Funeral Mist - Listening to Salvation while high can be described as a nearly religious experience, but I'm a complete fanboy of this album so maybe I'm a bit biased.
Darkspace - Anything. IMO this band doesn't reach it's full potential unless listened to while high.
Paysage D'hiver - Quite similar to Darkspace, just doesn't have as much unreleased potential as Darkspace does.
Demilich - Nespithe
Dissection - I don't know why, but Reinkaos just seems to be a lot better when you're high.
Drudkh - Anything except maybe the acoustic album which just seemed boring to me when I listened to it while high.
Limbonic Art - This band is ultra awesome if listened to while high.

These choices might seem a bit random, but they're based on my own experience with music and marijuana, and I was trying to move a bit away from the stoner/doom spectrum. Looking back at the list, the only stoner/doom band I mentioned is Electric Wizard, which is essential.

On the contrary, bands that I reccomend that you avoid while high are the following:

Khanate - This band is bad-trip inducing.
Emperor - All the flaws with this band shine through a lot more while you're high. Not a good experience.
Most thrash metal - Generally less enjoyable to listen to while high. The exception to this is Exhorder, which is quite fun to listen to.
Most brutal death metal - Quite bad-trip inducing unless it's one of those bands that are very funny (Mortician and Putrid Pile work).
Gorguts - Bad-trip inducing.
Dragonforce - Strangely enough, I have found this band to be bad-trip inducing.
Most grindcore - Gets less enjoyable. It often blurs together into a disturbing wall of noise. 2 Minuta Dreka is definitely not reccomended!
King Diamond - As awesome as King Diamond's music is, it is quite bad-trip inducing.

And for some wild cards that could go either way, check out these bands if you feel like taking risks:

Abruptum - This will either be ultra-awesome or VERY bad-trip inducing. I have experienced both.
Death's more progressive material - Will either get more enjoyable or less enjoyable, it mostly depends on the mood.
Manowar - Will either sound ultra-awesome or ultra-cheesy. Depends a lot on the mood.
Misantropical Painforest - I've had very mixed experiences with mixing this band with weed. I'm not to sure if I would call them very funny, bad-trip inducing, or just plain retarded.
Moonblood - Depends a lot on which song it is. A lot of them sound very good, but a lot of them also sound retarded as hell.

These are my experiences in any case. Have fun.

I thought I was the only person to experience this dichotomy, not just with Manowar, but in general. Often times I will listen to a song blazed and love it, but the next day I can't get into it at all. I think it has something to do with forming expectations prior to the 2nd listen that leads to a let down, but I don't know.

Manilla Road is always satisfying when I'm high. Typically I listen to Crystal Logic, Voyager, or Out of the Abyss.

I also think that traditional doom, especially one of the first three Saint Vitus records, is ideal listening. That guitar tone is just so warm and fuzzy, and matches so perfectly with a healthy bowl.

Wizard Fight by Weedeater sounds extremely incredibly fucking epic if listened to while baked. Also anything by Skepticism, Blut Aus Nord (especially Ultima Thulee) and Inquisition can do no wrong.

I'm straight edge, but my stoner friend makes a point of listening to stuff like Nile or Behemoth when he gets stoned. He also lit up at an Isis show that we went to, and if I dig drugs they would definitely involve Neurosis, Cult of Luna, or Isis.

I dont think I've seen any Melvins mention yet. For shame. Stoner Witch, Houdini, A Senile Animal, Lysol...all great albums to listen to whilst ripped out of your mind.

Anything that is different, technical, or progressive. I find average metal to be extreemly annoying while high, although im not much of a fan of average metal to begin with. Some of my personal choices are isis, tool, death, athiest, meshuggah, coroner, ulysses siren, and rush. Although when im high I usually don't listen to that much metal.

Mekong Delta-Lurking Fear

Anubis Gate-Andromeda Unchained

The Ocean-Pre-Cambrian (Just Proterzoan, skip the first 5 "brutal" tracks)

The Alchemist-Tripsis

Novembre-The Blue

Sinamore-Seven Sins A Second

Necronoclast-The Plague

Blut Aus Nord-Odinist

All Shall Perish-Awaken The Dreamer

From A Second Story Window (not on the archives but worth mentioning)

Personally, I don't actually listen to much metal per se when I'm altered. The traditional stuff just doesn't do anything for me, but some of the more progressive acts sound amazing. I tend to go back and find old CD's I loved and see the difference, mostly nu-metal. For instance, Mudvayne's L.D. 50 high is one of the most unbelievable experiences ever. Any post-rock (Russian Circles) or post-hardcore (Hollow Corp, some of the better Deathcore acts do this too) tend to use the same airy atmosphere and that always does it when I'm high. From A Second Story Window imparticular always takes me away when I listen to them high (Delenda/Conversations).

For a real crazy trip, Dir En Grey's new CD Uroborus is a pleasure, if you can bear them.

Anyway, I pretty much agree with whoever said they listen to the same stuff when they're high as when they're sober, it just sounds ten times better.

What genre would they be considered as? I heard they were around the lines of black metal.
