Since the mods don't like list threads, please explain why you like the cover you chose.

Candlemass - Ancient Dreams

I dont know what the picture in this is exactly, but there is some huge white palace thing in the backround, and the canyons and trees make it look like something out of a fantasy book, which goes perfectly with the sound of the album.

Most any Burzum cover art. They have a medieval and stark expressionism to go along with the music. Judas Iscariot even more so. The best. You're actually not going to get much disagreement on this at all.

It's a moose. And it's just fucking Agalloch. Ironically their next album, Ashes Against the Grain, has my least favorite album cover.

Most of Leviathan(US)'s album art, especially his latest and Tenth Sub-Level. There's something i really like about his style and the fact they he drew them.

Insect Warfare's LP has some of the coolest artwork, simply cause it looks badass.

and of course Dan Seagrave kicks ass.

Sorry folks, the park is closed as evidenced by the moose standing outside the gate.
An album with Bullwinkle on the cover like that always made me assume it was more appropriate on a Ted Nugent record.

Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian

It's such a detailed, ornate cover with lots of mystical, magical looking colors. Absolutely gorgeous, never gets old to look at. A pride to own.

I love this one for No Emotions's My Will
Image

I find it very engaging, and, even though it doesn't appear to represent the music, I just think it's really original.

While they have pretty cool album covers, I don't think "self-explanatory" does anything like this:

I love all of Iced Earth's covers with Set Abominae on it, like Something Wicked This Way Comes, [b]Crucible of Man[/i], Overture of the Wicked etc because he's such a cool fucking character as well as very intricate and detailed. I can't wait to get a tattoo of it! :metal:

This is irrefutably the greatest album cover ever. No argument, just bask in it's glory.

In all honesty though, I think Hammers of Misfortune's The Locust Years is probably my favorite.

Image

I love how it doesn't focus on making the band's logo the center of attention, and really focuses on the artwork as opposed to self promotion (although that's kind of what a cover is for). The reason I'd choose this one over my runner up is because the is the only cover I've ever read really deeply into. Usually, I find picking a symbol out of every object to be incredibly pretentious, but here I can't help but tuck in my scrote and become a pompous ass about it. It really fits with the overall theme of the album. The large, dark eagle being the government or reigning power, against the thunderstorm, wielding the power of God's influence (the all seeing eye worn around the neck). It's talons puppeteer four dark horses (to me being an obvious representation of the apocalypse) while the web woven from God's eye entangles all below, forcing a link to the horses and roses. I can easily visualize the cover when hearing the chorus to the title track (which is done in a masterfully terrifying way... I can really feel like an overbearing evil has just come into power).

Now that we're unchained
we'll reign, insane
and drown the world in flames
and blood, and pain
Our legion eyes and ears
will amplify your fears
in a wilderness of mirrors
in these new Locust Years

My runner up would be Melechesh's Sphynx:

Image

I find it impossible to see this and not have it invoke a feeling of overwhelming mysticism and awe. It's cool as it is, but I think it became one of my favorites after I noticed the small detail of a man at the foot of the beast. The Sphynx (or Assyrian Bull as one review mentions) became even more awe inspiring after noticing such a small thing.

One of the more pretentious posts of mine so far. We'll see if I top it in the coming years.

I don't know many covers that have a charcoal pencil style to them, let alone ones that portray a horde of demons atop a red ashen cliff of Hell ready to incinerate two priests with a flamethrower. I just wish there was a higher resolution version of it somewhere.

Maybe they are Virgilio and Dante from the Divine Comedy in their journey through helll...

I should have guessed that it wasn't original. :durr: Still, I can't seem to find that exact scene and it makes a great album cover regardless.

EDIT: nvm, found it.

The cover for SHKM looks lame. I dont like computer artwork shit like that. And the dude on the top of the tank looks like he is constipated.

As for awesome artwork, Bolt Thrower's Honour, Valour, Pride is on my favorites at the moment.

Image

It folds out, too, and has a complete scene. Sick detail, as well.

http://www.jarling-arts.com/coppermine/ ... um=4&pos=7

This picture by artist Uwe Jarling... very surreal and full of sick detail (with what looks like a great deal of influence from H.R. Giger). So fitting that it is the cover art for a good death metal album (Fleshcrawl-Descend into the Absurd) since the imagery coveys what the genre is all about.

And no one mentioned the below one, yet? For shame.

Haha guys, the op SPECIFICALLY ASKED YOU TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU LIKE THE COVERS.

My Dying Bride has some especially lovely covers.

The Dreadful Hours

Image

It just looks like an angel under an x-ray or something, but when you read the lyrics to the title track and look deeper into the picture, it's quite chilling.

It's the exact same thing with The Light at the End of the World, looks tame without the lyrics to the title track.
Image

Sunn O))) covers are also aesthetically pleasing, always been a fan of the minimalist art style.

For me it has to be the cover of Hvis Lyset Tar Oss simply because of the mysterious and sinister nature of the painting. You can't help but wonder what lies around that corner, making the birds flee.

I also really like the black and white images of nature (usually forests), typically found of black metal covers (Hate Forest for example) because usually these scenes really seem to fit so well with the music they represent.

It's okay, everyone still finds you obnoxious, but who am I to be talking.

ImageProbably one of my favorite album covers, alongside Flower Travellin' Band's Satori, Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, and I Shalt Become's Wanderings. The EW cover just evokes occult mysticism, 70's doom, and a bad trip. The colours of the sky are magical, alongside the purple faces of the cult followers. Fantastic album.

Not so much metal these days but the album artwork is fantastic, Unjust - Glow. Also new album that stood out to me was Septic Flesh - Communion.
