I saw this album cover in a Terrorizer mag Hard of Hearing feature. One of the girls from Gallhammer was holding it. I really want to find one with a bigger image size.

Is that depressing because it's a dark, eerie castle or because it reminds us of what Cryptopsy has become?

Clearly the latter. I don't find the art that depressing in and of itself.

And as such, I find the placement of that album in this rather apt.

This one definitely evokes a depressing mood, fitting for the music as well.

I had this one as well. It was a part from a trilogy called "Can you spot Varg?" I made a post about Varg's escape around April putting those images.
Post was deleted, old account banned.
And I can't imagine how someone can get startled from his face. I think he's cute.

Always seemed kind of cold and dark, it fits with the music. The music is also depressing in some parts.

I've found some Necrolord works really stimulate my imagination, although in a kind of depressing way. This one makes me imagine some desolate realm beyond time and space, perhaps the depths into which you plunge by pursuing the path suggested on Entombed's debut. Very evocative and fitting of the music, although the typical castle with blue tint does look rather generic for melodic BM of the time.
Aww damn person right before me posted the Sacramentum. Well, Somberlain would easily work here too.

Again, this one is very fitting of the music. A dreary, dark, dungeon, where the only means of artistic expression is a cheap Casio keyboard.
Maybe Mortiis could foresee the last two Burzum albums?
Image

Also, I've always found this one to be absolutely captivating, despite its very simple use of color and contrast.
Of course, it's a million times better while listening to the album, in the mists of a black winter night.

Am I the only one who cannot help but laugh at some of these? Like the Black Flag one, The Mayhem one....etc Some of these are just trying to be graphic/depressing to the point where I have to laugh.

drudkh - blood in our wells

from the way i interpret this painting, it is the widow of a farmer and their children (and dog). her head is hanging in sorrow, not only because of the death of her husband, but also because of the hardships that lie ahead. how will she feed the family and herself? a bleak future lies ahead...

I've always found Sad Wings of Destiny cover to be kind of... sad. The album's lyrical content is pretty morbid and depressing as well.

It means you must check out some paintings by Zdzisław Beksiński. This is his work and the Evoken's cover also... Metal bands often use his art as covers.

Is it this one? It's not a church or Black Metal, but when I read your post, this is what I thought of.
