Post some album covers that find very depressing. Do you think these album covers match the feel of the music, and do you think there is any symbolism behind it?

For me, I have always found these quite depressing.

Wehmut-Ableben [promo]
Image

I dont find there to be much symbolism behind this cover, but the black and white coloring of the picture definately supports feelings of coldness and lonliness in this demo, which work perfectly with the sound the album possesses.

Mirror of Deception-Shards
Image

This album cover has always gotten to me. I find there to be symbolism in the cover, and that is that when people are sad or upset or "their world is broken" they always go around to people asking for them for help and support. I don't find there to be much of a connection to the albums sound though. The album has an epic Candlemass like sound.

I get a definite sense of 'what do we do with this balloon now that it's burst' off this, it fits the general theme of futile gratuitous defeatist decadence that runs through the album.

Image
This one definitely fits the mood of the album, beyond the obvious aspect of depicting the band name itself. I always think of the track 'Catherine Blake' when I see it.

Lacrimose boobs ftw.

Image
I like this one, you get the sense that the drowned protagonist mulled over his suicide for long enough to be completely resigned to it, and the act just came to him spontaneously and unceremoniously one day, there's something flippant and romantic about it. Suits the album I guess, the lyrics are dark but it's very chilled and indie sounding.
It gets confusing if you read too much into it though, as the last track is an angsty one with a happy ending that fades out to the sound of a guy walking on gravel (on a beach) ranting incoherently.

Most of Katatonia's album covers are very depressing and fit the music perfectly.

Katatonia's Dance of December Souls always struck me as mysterious rather than depressing. Their EP before that looks even more confusing.

For the most part, I don't find metal covers depressing.

All great covers, but the Loss one is just amazing. I don't think you can get any bleaker than that.

Here's some of the most depressive I've found, unless they were already posted.

Pretty much speaks for itself.

The album name in conjunction with the cover seems to indicate (to me anyway) that "tonight's decision" was about committing suicide by way of train.

Bassically, *insert any Gothic/Doom band here* but this one is very depressing too:

A non doom or gothic album:
I find it depressing knowing how Valfar died, and I picture this album cover as maybe the image his family saw while waiting for him...so damn sad.

I think the Drudkh covers fit this, especially "Blood in our Wells", and "Songs Of Grief & Solitude"

Edit: Is the guy on the "Mirror of Deception" cover holding pepperoni?

I guess that's just bizarre to me. I can understand how they would evoke feelings of lonesomeness or despair, but depressing doesn't seem like the term I would apply to them. The Solitude Aeturnus one was the only one to strike a chord within me so far.

It's not really they are trees or anything, but its the atmosphere. I guess black and white pictures of trees promote a feeling of lonliness (the forest is empty, for example) The ones with Hate Forest promote that also, along with the snow making a colder atmosphere.

Not a single one is to me, so far. But I very rarely am emotionally affected by still pictures.

I'm gonna side with rexxz here. I really don't find any of these depressing. Especially the Hate Forest ones. Not only is that a bloody stupid name for a band, the covers are unoriginal and had no REAL artistic merit behind them. The emotion they try to convey is superficial and only part of an image - a badly manufactured one at that.

Actually, Hate Forest's covers fit the music pretty well. Cold, dark forests in the middle of nowhere. Sure Forest is a cooler band name but Hate Forest is nice too. More evil.

Silly, he isn't air guitaring. This is an Opeth album. He's clearly in the middle of writing an acoustic ballad to his dead love - WITH HIS MIND. Because he's a vampire and can do stuff like that.

I don't find many album covers depressing, but a lot of doom and black metal ones are very bleak. Transylvanian Hunger is a classic in that department. He looks so agonized.

That isn't depressing at all. It probably belongs in the 'album covers in poorest taste' thread, though.

Since you all seem to get depressed by people in nooses and shit...

There. Guy alone on a hill, ready to end his life by self-hanging, while riding onto the scene on a very sad-looking horse. At sunset, the time of death for the day. Now enjoy the happy-go-lucky psychedelia of the album. BORN IN THE MIDNIGHT SUN!

I don't get what's up with relating those lovely nature pictures to depression. The good ones might evoke a feeling of isolation and the atmosphere of being in the BOSOM of the wilderness, but not depression. The bad ones (ie. 90% of the album art used for black metal) just suck. It's like 'We can't afford Travis Smith, so let's go to our back yard and take a picture of a tree with a squirrel hole in it. The hole represents the void in my soul, if anyone asks.'

Gay.

Anathema's A Fine Day to Exit, already posted here, probably has the most genuine potency to depress if one stares at it long enough. So many possible stories behind the full unfolded art (the cover is only one third of the picture.)
