Which bands, in your opinion have made great, unexpected comebacks after beeing splitted up for years?

Celtic frost's Monotheist comes into my mind, i mean; it's not another To mega therion, but it's not another shitty mediocre album such as Vanity/Nemesis either. ''Great, dark atmosphere combinated by creepy heaviness'' The way i'd describe that album. Also Celtics Frost most emotional album ever created.

Your opinion?

Motorhead I would say.

I agree about Celtic Frost .. "Monotheist" was not only their best album since "To Mega Therion", but a powerful and singular statement that towers above anything bands' have done in a somewhat similar vein.

Vulcano, Manilla Road and Pagan Altar are probably the other significant ones for me. The Vulcano is most surprising, since they hadn't really released anything great since 1986's "Bloody Vengeance", but "Tales from the Black Book" is just a killer death/thrash record that walks all over most of the competition.

Suffocation's self titled. Not as good as Pierced or Effigy, but a lot better than Souls to Deny and anything a lot of other bands put out these days.

When did Motorhead stop releasing albums?

I thought almost exactly the same about Vulcano, definitely their best since their first studio album ''Bloody Vengeance''. Shame their other work was pretty mediocre.

Yeah, they never went away to come back!

I also have to say Carcass and Possessed for their recent live shows. Shame neither of them are on top form anymore (Jeff Becerra disabled and Ken Owen can't drum anymore ) But despite these setbacks, I think they were fairly successful and I'm hoping for new Carcass material in the future!

i rate iron maiden & bruce's reunion effort pretty highly. while i don't dislike the Blaze era stuff, i do think those are their weakest albums. when they reunited with Bruce and put out Brave New World, i think they were back on track. i really enjoy that album a lot.

Mercyful Fate - In the Shadows - Almost as strong as the previous two, really great album.

Helstar - The King of Hell is amazing, the band sounds exactly like they did 20 years ago, which is a very good thing!

manilla road didnt make a great comeback because they havent released a shitty album ever.

Most here tend to disagree from what I've read, but I'll stand by Abigor's Fractal Possession as being a great (albeit in a new direction) comeback album.

Monotheist is the only one that comes to mind; it's somwhat inconsistent, but certainly enjoyable and above all, it's one of the very few cases that a legendary band came back with something that does not try to imitate either their former selves or the current trend.

That doesn't mean they can't make a great comeback.

I dont know if it was really a come back, But King of the Grey Islands by Candlemass was a great album.

I think Destruction's All Hell Breaks Loose is a great album. An excellent return for Schmier. I'm also a pretty big fan of Tempo of the Damned when Exodus reformed, despite the fact Baloff would have made it a ton more interesting.

I'd say Gorefest. They came back with 2 great albums, especially their latest.

Mayhem's "Ordo Ad Chao" was a damn good comeback considering their mediocre previous 2 albums.

I think you can also make a comeback by making several shitty albums beforehand.

Hopefully Immortal's next album will kick ass, if they release something on par with their usual music they'll qualify for a great comeback.

Also, I must say that despite it being their weakest by a long shot I enjoy Dissection's Reinkaos (which has more in common with what a Jon Nödtveidt solo album would sound like instead of a full-fledged Dissection album).

Carcass kicked ass live when I saw them earlier this fall, so that can be counted as a good comeback.

Metallica has been the most recent, with their somewhat redeeming last album.

Paradise Lost's In Requiem. The fact that they returned to playing actual metal after abandoning the style almost 10 years before is definitely an awesome comeback. Great album, too.

I have not heard a single shitty Motorhead album. At the risk of sounding like a total blind fanboy, I think Motorhead is the greatest rock and roll band ever.

If we're just talking about levels of quality, I guess that means Painkiller is a hell of a comeback... not that Turbo and Ram It Down were "shitty" so much as just weak for the band, just that Painkiller far eclipses them.

Yet another vote for Monotheist.

Yeah they did. And they reunited in 2006. Apparently a new album will be released in the hopefully-not-too-distant future.

Destruction, Antichrist is brilliant, and after Least Successful Human Cannonball it's quite a huge turn around.

That's the best news I've heard since Glen Benton got his vocal cords ripped out in a fight with a rabid grizzly bear.

At least it (referring to Voyager) seems better than Gates of Fire (which disappoints me), Atlantis Rising (decent) and Spiral Castle (which is OK).

Ordo Ad Chao was bloody fantastic.

Spiral Castle is the best album they ever did.

Guillotine - Blood Money. They only had one album 10 years earlier, and IMO still managed to beat anything Kreator did since Coma of Souls.

As if that's an accomplishment...

I don't know, Kreator's last two were pretty good.
