Who plays the bassoon here? I just love its evocative tone, so velvety, fragile, yet dignified. Haven't come across it outside of classical music settings though, any metal bands (besides Galar) utilize the bassoon in their recordings?

Galar's the first one I've heard of to focus on the bassoon. I'm sure there's some symphonic metal band out there that's used one for actual symphonic recording at some point (or even something like Metallica's S&M).

In a similar vein, though, is anyone aware of any clarinet focus from any metal bands? My girlfriend plays classical/modern classical clarinet, and we were looking to expand her repertoire a bit if possible.

I believe there's a small bassoon lead in Nightwish's "Ghost Love Score," which is one of the few Nightwish songs I like.

I'm going to university for performance on oboe, which is close enough to the bassoon =). I unfourtunately don't know of any bands that feature bassoon, but if you also enjoy oboe, Haggard's newest album contains a lot of prominent oboe playing.

You got an English Horn to double on? The EH solo in the slow movement of Ravel's G Piano Concerto is simply divine, more so than the more famous one in Dvorak's New World Symphony. Good luck with your studies.

My sister-in-law is a professional bassoonist. She lives for that one time a year when her orchestra do the Rite of Spring.

I don't care what instrument you play, you should ALWAYS live for that time of year when your orchestra plays the Rite of Spring.

(God damn I love Stravinsky.)

Speaking of which, why hasn't anyone (like Mekong Delta) done a cover of that? Potential for awesome is almost guaranteed.
