I've been looking for early speed or thrash metal bands with a proto-black metal sound. Bands similiar to Venom, Bulldozer, N.M.E, and Running Wild's first two albums. Speed metal bands, raw, simple, catchy, and without any high pitched vocals. Anybody know of some bands that fit this description?

There's always Hellhammer/early Celtic Frost. Destruction's first EP. Sodom's first EP and LP. Flames of Hell.

Many bands fit this label. Just as Nolan has pointed out, look to the first wave bands. A little research goes a long way....

Also, try early Nifelheim from Sweden, and Nocturnus's album "The Key"

Nocturnus is a great band but more death metal oriented with some thrash tendencies and a lot of keyboard wankery (but in a good way)

Try sodomizer which is a modern band that is basically black/speed metal but not overproduced.

I figured that Nocturnus would be a little much on the death metal side for him, I suggested it because the thrash parts are pretty fucking bad ass, heh
