Looking for WWI themed albums and/or bands. Already know of Bolt thrower's Those Once Loyal so any help would be great.

Thanks.

You definitely need Skyforger's "Latviesu Strelnieki" (Latvian Riflemen) -- Folky Black/Death Metal concept album about the Latvian soldiers during WWI. Excellent.

Try Operation Winter Mist for some grinding black/death metal coupled with lyrics about war and winter in general. Songs like Iron coffins and In the Trenches are about WWI. There are also some songs about WWII as well. They also have a very proud Canadian vibe in a lot of their lyrics.

Not a band or album, but the song Europa Burns off Dismember's s/t is about WWI and kicks a considerable number of arses.

Ooh good topic. I'll have to check out some of this, I always thought a WWI-era battlefield is a great subject for metal. Some of the most inhumane conditions people have ever been put in. The lyrics for "total war" from my band pretty much come from that.

It's remarkably hard to find WWI themed ANYTHING these days, since everything is about WWII. Just look at computer games. II outnumbers I by about 5000:1.

I second Operation Winter Mist as the best black metal band in existence. Highly recommended.

Well, the problem is that WWI was a very slow-moving conflict. A whole lot of hunkering down and exchanging pot shots, not a lot of action. I can see why a WWI shooter or strategy game would be pretty lame.

Sounds fun.

Mission 1: Sit in your trench.
Mission 2: Sit in your trench.
Mission 3: Sit in your trench. Survive a near-miss artillery attack.
Mission 4: Sit in your trench.
Mission 5: Go over the top and die in 3 seconds.

Watch the Germans build an obsolutely massive gun, then not hit anything with it.

War is war. Hence, war is hell altogether. That being said, if I had to choose which conflict I would not want to partake in, it would be the trench warfare campaigns undertaken in The Great War. There is a reason why Britain and Germany was in a bit of a standoff in the Phony Wars of 1940. It is because they were making preparations to take Norway first so as to avoid another trench fight that both sides dreaded.

A few bands come to mind, Belgian death metal band Battalion, The Monolith Deathcult's White Crematorium album, Swedish power metallers Sabaton, Maple Cross's last album - Heimo, the Hail Of Bullets album.

Germans have built excessively big guns in most wars. In WWII they also liked to make excessively big tanks.

They also went bust with the then cutting edge Zeppelin in bombing and scouting missions on England. Bust is the operative word there because they caught a whole lotta led.

2 have just occurred to me, both Australian bands: Sacriphyx and Slaughter Thou. Particulary sacriphyx's "Lone Pine" 7", which is about the gallipoli fiasco.

Gallipoli?
Somme?
Ypres?

Just to name a few. I agree there was a lot of "hunkering" down, however, WWI was absolutely brutal partly due to the use of new weaponry with old tactics. This was the idealogical change in war that completely eliminated the glory and adventurous fervor. "Gallipoli" by your countryman Peter Weir is an absolutely stunning account of the aforementioned idealogies - a stunning piece of cinema.

Also the gun mentioned referred to earlier is "Big Bertha" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bertha_(howitzer)

To a degree you're right, but the problem is in the way it played out. You'd have these brief charges across no man's land, resulting in either the capture of a trench or, more likely, a machinegun massacre. Then it'd be back to the trenches again, with more of the same the next time. You could say it wasn't exactly a very dynamic war.

Sorry to be off topic of the OP.

It was never really intended to play out that way. Poor army tactics from German officers and slow mobilization turned it into a 4 year stalemate back and forth. I definitely agree with your statement that it was not a very 'dynamic' war (in terms of campaigns or occupations) but extremely brutal and costly shaping generations, countries, idealogies, and veterans forever. Definitely one of the most interesting wars to study, I would say though.

Germans have built excessively big guns in most wars. In WWII they also liked to make excessively big tanks.

They built this in WWI:

Image

Here's the specs for the A7V:

Quote:

Weight 30 to 33 t

Length 7.34 m (24 ft 1 in)

Width 3.1 m (10 ft)

Height 3.3 m (10 ft 10 in)

Crew 18

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Armor side 20 mm, front 50 mm

Primary armament 57 mm gun

Secondary armament 6×7.9 mm machine guns

Engine 2×Daimler 4-cylinder 200 hp (149 kW)

Power/weight 6.5 hp/tonne

Suspension Holt track, vertical springs

Operational range 30-80 km (20-50 miles)

Speed 9 km/h

They had a couple of even bigger designs on the drawing board at the time of the Armistice.

Certainly the Western and Italian Fronts were slow-moving, as was the Gallipoli Campaign, but the Eastern Front, Mesopotamia, and the Suez-Palestine fronts were fairly mobile.
