How do you normally go about doing your stuff?

What I normally do is...

1. Form the song structure. ( eg -Intro-Verse-chorus-verse-bridge-verse-chorus)
2. Record respective riffs with a rough idea of the drum pattern to be layered underneath it
3. Export recorded matter to PC.
4. Open FL studio and punch in the drums with the riff playing in another window for reference.
5. Layer riffs with their respective drum patterns in audacity.
6. Song sans vocals appears.

Also if any of you one-man drum machine metallers have any projects on the web, please post a link to your material. Im curious to check it out.

hey man, i use drumkit form hell, and heres how ive been doing my songwriting the last couple of years:

1. i jam around on my guitar and come up with 1 or 2 riffs
2. i record the 2 riffs ive written, more or less a mud track, and then make a drum track for that part and put it on top
3. re-record and tighten up the riffs for that particular section
4. after ive got those two riffs down, i have other ideas in my head, so i continue to build on the song.
5. after about 3-5 hours ive finished writing/recording the song on the spot

a link? check out www.myspace.com/triameraband and listen to "the reckoning" and/or "waiting for destruction", they show what that process can build :)

I write the entire song out in guitar pro. Usually the drum track evolves along with the song.

Hi, I give link to page that contain several samplers of my one-man musical project. So far the songs are still without singing. Just trial record via computer. I use DR 670 (once i created separate topic about the drum machine here).
You can also visit my homepage in order to get more infos.

I always write the song, program drum parts and record them, then rhythm guitars and bass etc. I think its easier to have the drums laid down first. If I wanted a more human sounding drum part I'd play the drum machine (first bass snare, then cymbals etc) live to a click, and then lay down the other instruments on top of that. Even if you record the guitars first I think its important to have a click as a reference track.

When I have an idea it depends on what the initial part is.
I am a bassplayer but think in guitar riffs quite a great amount of the time.
What I do is get my initial idea, either a bass part or a guitar part or even the lyrics and see what I can add to that. I always have the rythm incorporated in these parts.
So when I have added to the point where it is becoming a song I start by creating the simplest drum pattern on my drumcomputer (a Roland rythm composer TR-707) to keep the song going.
This I record on my PC (in cubase) and then add all the other parts, I already have, to it. When this is done I mix this down and listen to what misses in the drum parts or what do I think that needs to be in the drum parts.
This I then add to the parts in the drumcomputer and the finished drumparts I then record onto my PC and correct this if necessary.
When everything is on my Pc the way I like it to be I then make a final mixdown in which I add effects and such.

I usually use a very basic drum track and record guitar part over in acid pro, not the whole song, but like verse riff, chorus riff, intro, whatever, then loop and rearrange things until I think the song structure works, edit in any samples and stuff I might want to use, then make a better (hopefully) drum part with either samples in acid pro or on my drum machine, then go back and re-record the guitars, then do the vocals. Which is why it takes me eons to record anything at all, lol.

I compose the material fully first, then sit down and write out and program the drums (I use a drum machine)

Basically then, I record the drum track, and then start by laying everything else down over the top. First Rythm guitar, then the lead guitar, then bass. . .etc.

Once I'm happy with that, I'll go over it a few times and make sure I'm happy with all the drum patterns and guitar riffs, and that I'm happy that everything fits, and if not I alter bits and pieces till I am. The means I used before was recording onto a tape 4 track, and copying it to PC via Audacity. If I needed more than 4 tracks, which I invariably did all the time, I used to record 2 tracks of the same drums (giving me 2 lots of 4 tracks), and record all the instrument tracks like that, panning them before putting them on the computer, and I would only copy 1 drum track to the computer, and only keep the cymbal count in from the second to line them up. Was a painful time consuming task, but it worked ok. Ha ha! I now have a digital 8 track (Zoom HD8) so the former is well in the past!

Check out the link in my sig to my solo project Artanor.

The link to Fen Hollen is a 2 piece, but shared the exact same process.

This, plus a tad of composition during the recording (leads mostly).

Yeah, there are some spur of the moment 'so to speak' things that do happen whilst recording. I was mainly refering to the basic first recording of the song. :)

And it appears to be a good way of recording.
For exemples in terms of results, visit the "Display" link in my sig. (or not.)

Aurvandil's website has a Flash Player with some tracks from the demos.
Was that the question? :)

What I do is I come up with a full drum song. I do the full song on the drums first, then fill it in with guitar, bass, and finally vocals. Sometimes I'll switch it up, like come up with a few heinous riffs and then fill the drums in with it.

Interesting, to say the least!

I'm a drummer more than I am anything else. I am not a fan of drum machines. I do it all myself... Every instrument... And i'm an AWFUL guitar player. But still, I never said my solo recordings were any good. Just something I do for fun.

this. unfortunately, the drum sound guitar pro creates sounds terrible, even by drum machine standards. however, some nice EQ'ing can make them sound somewhat listenable.
