A band I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned: Meat Puppets. Their first 3 albums, fucking incredible mixture of hardcore and country.

It's on their discography comp CD thing. There's a heap of other covers as well. D.R.I, Circle Jerks, Beowulf and the Possessed one.

Lethal Aggression - Hardcore/Crossover band from New Jersey playing very aggressive hardcore with metal riffs. Formed in 1984, split in 1991 and recently reunited. In the vein of S.O.D. and D.R.I.

The Accused - another crossover band with gore/splatter lyrics they early
records are insane.

R.K.L. - Awesome hardcore/punk/crossover from Santa Barbara. Check the albums: RocK 'n Roll Nightmare (1987) and Riches to Rags (1994).

Also T.S.O.L. have had their ups and downs but the "Dissapear" album of 2001 is superb, and D.I.'s "What good is grief to a God?" is worth listening to.

But for the most part, I have found hardcore punk too messy and immature to enjoy. I'm probably making a blanket statement, but it seems just way too abrasive and just... too loud to like. Maybe that's why the scene lasted like what... seven years? Eight years?

Rich Kids on LSD? I loved them back in the day. They had some sweet thrash riffs.

I think its insane how people say that hardcore died in 85 or something. give me a break! While the 80s had some great bands, hardcore had barely begin to start. Most of the best bands didnt even start by the time the so called scene "died". I think hardcore now is way more passionate and shoved way father underground that it ever could have been in the 80's. I'm not even talking about established bands either, im talking about kids doing it themselves in the basements or your cities, putting on shows, making their own records.

Give some examples, around here the "hardcore" bands are either tough guy core bands, scenester metalcore bands and somewhat trad sounding posi stuff. Also Deathcore bands in the Chicago area tend to associate with the hardcore scene as well, even though the real thing virtually doesn't exist.

Ah man chicago has a great scene! theres some really good hardcore coming out of there, especially the latino bands. No Slogan is one i can think of who plays some really passionate hardcore. Maybe check out Punch in The Face, featuring ebro from charles bronson etc....good old sounding stuff in the vein of Poison Idea. Los Crudos, Limp Wrist, Chronic Siezure, Disrobe, I Attack, Sin Orden, Securicor, Weekend Nachos, really theres a ton of bands playing illinoise if you look for them. And none of those are tough guy mosh core metal new school bullshit. Im actually right across the lake from you in michigan and a lot of those bands play here often.

There are still plenty of great punk/hardcore bands, both original and throwback types; Texas is chock full of them.

minor threat's one of those bands that change your life haha. Early D.R.I. is a favorite, but their crossover thrash is even better. A newer band influenced by all DRI type bands is municipal waste. Check out their older stuff (everything before Art off Partying is good)

aslo INFEST, Charles Bronson, Government Issue, & Spazz (golden harvest hardcore)

gang green's good too, probably a lot more skate thrash than hardcore but worth a listen

I enjoy the band The order of the fly, though they are more a horror punk band, they still have a more aggressive sound that you could descirbe as hardcore.

Honestly american hardcore doesn't do much for me. There are a few bands that I like a lot - the Crucifucks and the Proletariat especially - but neither of those bands are really similar to any other ushc bands. What I really love is European hardcore and some Japanese shit (not as familiar with many 80s japanese hxc bands).

but anyway, my list, by country:




US:
Crucifucks - Really crazy, demented hardcore, with lots of musical talent hiding beneath the surface. The singer is hard to get used to, he has a really atonal, almost screechy voice, but I love 'em.

Proletariat - Very political, non-conventional punk/hardcore. It's mostly midtempo, almost military at times (reminiscent of Crass and their military-style drumming). Wonderful band.

MDC - This has already been referenced, but it deserves to be referenced again. Fast as fuck and basically genius.

NOTA - Another really fast band, but they're, I dunno, different...more tight and put-together, I guess.

Minor Threat - Essential.

Toxic Reasons - Slower band, a lot more rock and roll-y, but great stuff nonetheless.




UK:
Discharge - As far as I'm concerned, THE definitive hardcore band, their first three EPs and Why are absolute essentials.

Icons of Filth - More proto-crust, a lot more put-together than Crude SS but still fast and great.

Rudimentary Peni - One of the most eccentric, odd, strange bands I've ever heard. I'm not too familiar with their earliest releases - anarcho for the most part - but what I must recommend is the album Cacophony. It's stretching the limits of hardcore - it's basically a concept album about H. P. Lovecraft, and I consider it to be the single greatest musical expression of his works. Everything about it screams chaos, uncertainty, and confusion.




Finland:
Kaaos - One of those great Finnish hardcore bands...I really can't describe the style, and frankly they tend to do it alike (although this by no means diminishes their talent).

Rattus - Rattus have a varied sound, their earlier stuff is just fast as fuck thrashy hardcore with pretty incomprehensible (even by the standards of vocals in a foreign language) vocals. Their later stuff, though, they slowed down just a little bit and picked up a clear singer, and hearing the shit in Finnish is just wonderful.

Other Europe:
Electric Deads (Denmark) - Fast (almost metallic), fun hardcore band with a female vocalist. Found out about them from a compilation that I'll discuss later on as it's probably one of the greatest compilations I've ever heard.

Crude SS (Swedish) - Crazy 80s proto-crust, pretty fast and intense, all around good stuff.




My final recommendation is the 1984 compilation Welcome to 1984. It's an international compilation, featuring bands from all over the globe, and is probably one of the greatest compilations I've ever heard - every single song on there is quality, and it's turned me on to all sorts of wonderful bands. I would recommend looking for it online, it's more or less a gateway to worlds and worlds of hardcore bliss.

Ive always had a large amount of respect for punk and hardcore. I understand its influence on metal and Id like to think I know enough about the imoporant bands that really stood out in the genre. I always thought the ideas and mindset behind hardcore punk was very similar to those of death metal and other genres. Its just a different sound and a different style of expression. Theres a local venue around where I live that books hardcore, punk and metal, bands. Il go just to hang out and watch different bands play different styles of music. Only a few of my friends have the same apreciation as I do. In the end its just not the sound for my music taste but I respect it and apreciate the style and its impact.

One of the oldest, if not the oldest, danish punk rock band. Their debut record "Minutes To Go" is proto-hardcore at some points, and just plain raging. Keep in mind that it's only their fist album that is punk and the album they released after that is more new wave post punkish stuff, but still really good if you like that kind of stuff.

Amdi Petersens Armé:
In my opinion the best hc band to ever come from Denmark. APA released demo tape and two 7"es. They've been decribed as sounding like the missing sessions from the "Boston Not LA" compilation, and I guess that fits pretty well.

There has been a grand total of one mention of G.I.S.M. in this thread. That is a damn shame, as G.I.S.M. are fucking incredible. I'm currently listening to Performance of War for the first time; it's actually pretty catchy, although I think I prefer the raw, relentless barrage of SoniCRIME TheRapy.

EDIT: Actually, the later portions of Performance of War is rawer. I think I still like SoniCRIME more.
