SUNKEN - "Livslede"Out December 14th 2020 (on tape by TONEwood Music)
From their days as Arescet over the phenomenal Departure album till now, Sunken have been on a continuous journey and have now arrived at their most fully formed album experience yet. Departure from 2017 was already an exceedingly competent effort, and yet the band’s trademark waves of ethereal instrumentation and crushing wash of emotions have now been further refined into the album Livslede.
Though often held up to the soaring success of their Danish brethren in Solbrud, Sunken mark themselves with the release of Livslede as very much their own entity with a separate set of influences, experiences and aspirations. Though the twin guitars of Simon Skotte and Kasper Deichmann build a delicate and light soundscape, coupled with Martin Skyum’s throaty roars and a heavy-handed rhythmic foundation by Jonas Faghtmann and Jakob Ridder the end result is an intensely burning balancing of chaos and cosmos.
Sunken have settled into a rich, sentimental lyrical universe and equally well-developed musical unity that doesn’t feel directly derivative of anything else. The end result is a gentle, echoing ambiance erupting into monolithic waves violently thrashing against cold, solid rock. As such Livslede stands as one of the most extravagantly composed atmospheric black metal albums of 2020, and portrays the Danish band as an entity confident in its stylistic choices.
