How are you doing today, Jarkko?

Working with my band Temple Of Tiermes 2xLP layout in my studio , album is delayed so I’m very busy with this album

I consider Unholy to be one of the most unique and outstanding extreme metal bands in the 90s and especially in Finland. How did you guys form and what made you guys take the avant-garde route in your music?

I started playing guitar when I was 16. Around those times I met Pasi on the shores of river Vuoksi in our hometown Imatra and I knew he played bass and I asked if he was interested to form the most extreme metal band with me and he agreed.
After a while when we had jammed together we needed a rhythm guitar player and asked my cousin Ismo if he’s interested to playing guitar with us . He was interested and we started rehearsing together. Took a while and we found a drummer which we have been searching for a quite long time and eventually Vesa Junna wanted to join us.

Now Armageddon band was born but Vesa Junna on drums wasn’t good enough and was replaced by Kimmo Hänninen and the band name was changed to Holy Hell and we recorded our first rehearsal demo “ Unhallowed Passion “ and soon our first studio demo “ Kill Jesus “ . Kimmo wasn't a good drummer and had not enough interest for band duties and we were constantly searching for a more talented guy for drums, in 1991 Jan joined and we recorded our first professional studio in 1992 .
Avant-garde route came naturally as we experimented all the time to create bizarre, original, very heavy and experimental sounds.


Who wrote most of the riffs for From the Shadows? Your or Ismo?

Me and Pasi practically wrote the whole shit.

What are some bands you listened to back in the days of Unholy, that you still listen to now?

Not just bands but also composers - Bach , Ligeti , Barber, Penderecki, Wendy Carlos, Bartók, Tangerine Dream and many others.Bach , Ligeti , Barber, Penderecki, Wendy Carlos, Bartók, Tangerine Dream and many others.

Were you into tape trading? If so, did you receive any notable stuff and do you still have them?

I was trading all the time with bands around the world but didn't have many demo tapes left anymore. Most notably were all Beherit’s demo stuff. I still consider Beherit as a best black metal band in the world . Then there was Flounder and their “ Virtahevonkakkaa !! ” demo which I still have , it's the weirdest metal demo tape I’ve ever heard .

What was the initial response for From the Shadows when it was released?

Love it or hate it, in some reviews it was called a piece of shit while some zines rated it as a KVLT and a masterpiece.

What bands were you close with back then? Any outside Finland?

From Finland - Beherit, I often hung out with Marko drinking beer and listening black metal. I recall we played 4 gigs with Beherit and became friends. Unburied I lived in Lahti and met Waltteri there. We used to play both RPG board and LARP games with him and local guys . Luckily I knew Waltteri , we got him to play rhythm guitar in Unholy live shows when Ismo was doing his military service. There were dozens other bands too but not so close friends like Marko and Waltteri.
Outside Finland we knew Miasma from Austria , met them when recording From The Shadows. After the studio day we often went to Miasma’s rehearsal place. Everyone was completely stoned and we played black- death, and trash metal covers and nights we spent in nightclubs.

There are some (probably very old) rumors that you burned Burzum & Mayhem records live on stage, along with various other things. Is this true?

Half rumour and half true . The crowd did the most of smashing Norwegian black metal albums to pieces, I wouldn’t spend a dime for an album which was gonna get destroyed. We also burned bibles and other Christian material on stage.

How was the divide between Black metal and Death metal in Finland in the 90s? Did the black metal bands hate the death metal bands and vice versa?

No, in gigs there were bands from both genres and at least from my experience everyone was friendly to each other . We traveled together in the same gig bus and it didn’t matter if it was guys from trash, death or black metal band we always had fun in gigs and our travels.

Was illegal substances essential to the song writing for Unholy?

Taking psilocybin is not illegal here but psilocybin had a huge effect on my songwriting.For hard drugs like meth,none of us didn’t use hard drugs . I’ve heard too many rumours that I or someone else in Unholy were a drug addict which was a lie.

Do you still keep an eye out for new bands and releases?

No

Can you tell me about your current musical projects?

My band is called Temple Of Tiermes, formed in 1995 with Mikko Aspa. With Mikko we released a very limited edition tape where we made noise, esoteric ritual music and experimental stuff with human skull percussions, eccentric and piercing feedback guitar manipulation . We have released 5 full length albums so far and our next album entitled “ Horagelles “ is soon out. It’s a 2xLP with giant poster etc bonus goodies, edition of 225 copies of 200 black vinyls and 25 coloured vinyls , all vinyls unique and different from other copies.

Do you miss the finnish extreme metal scene?

No , I move forward and don’t want to be stuck in the same old shit whose best date is expired. Too many bands continue too long and start to fo bad albums

Are you still in contact with the old members of Unholy?

On a daily basis.

What caused the name change from Holy Hell to Unholy?

Unholy sounded better.

Where did you get the pictures for the Trip To Depressive Autumn and From the Shadows covers?

Lack of memory. I don’t remember it’s been so long .

Who made the Demo 11.90 cover?

Tuukka TG Rantanen of Chaos Graphics

Marco (ex-Blasphemy) mentioned earlier in this ‘zine that his experience with Wild Rags Records was "Terrible". Do you feel the same?

Yup, everything with Wildrags went wrong , we got one tape from them . Another rip-off label.
