DIABOLICAL (Sweden) Interview
by http://www.blistering.com

Image

By David E. Gehlke

Diabolical - All Life Ends

The Swedish death metal template has been altered, tinkered with, and all-around dismantled by throes of copycats and wannabees. And while we’ll never begrudge a band for wanting to infuse some of the classic Stockholm/Gothenburg spirit of the 90s into their sound, it has long been a pain-point for native Swedish death metallers who have stand by and watch their sound raped and pillaged. For Sundsvall-based Diabolical, straddling the line between the classic, no-frills DM (Stockholm) and melody-laced DM (Gothenburg) is a cause worth fighting for.

Having just hit the 15-year mark, the Swedes released Ars Vitae, a compilation of new songs and live tracks that encompass the band’s unheralded, but strong career. A moving undercurrent of classic Hypocrisy (i.e. The Final Chapter era) and bruising Dismember-like sonics instantly give songs like “Sightless 6” and “Eye” an extra degree of catchiness that is hard to deny, while the live cuts are spot-on, a rare find for bands of this ilk. With all this in mind, we snagged drummer Carl Stjärnlöv for a round of queries about Ars Vitae, the band’s recent upswing in live performances and much more. Here’s how our man responded…

Blistering.com: You recently completed a tour in support of Ars Vitae. How did it go?

Carl Stjärnlöv: It was an epic success. We made a dozen shows in Russia which was an amazing ride. The fans were among the most dedicated and crazy I’ve ever encountered. Whirlwind moshpits of screaming metalheads every night and hours of photographs and signing sessions after every show. The vodka was nice as well.

Blistering.com: Speaking of which, some of the live tracks on Ars Vitae show how tight and professional-sounding the band is, which isn’t the easiest thing for death metal. How seriously do you take this aspect of the band?

Stjärnlöv: We take it seriously indeed, but I wouldn’t mind rehearsing even more to make further improvements. Sadly, we can’t spend all our days in the rehearsal place since we’re not full time rockstars yet. Although we pay much attention to detail when it comes to our live performances. And we try to stay sober until we go off stage.

Blistering.com: Considering the band was never intended to be a live act in the first place, how pleased are you with how well your songs translate live?

Stjärnlöv: It was a long time since it was decided that we would be an active live band. Nowadays we try to play live as much as possible. I think for the most part our music translates live pretty well. We try to think of that aspect already when we write songs and when we are in the studio. We play moderately complex stuff so keeping riffs at least somewhat simple is good for live purposes, otherwise you’ll end up hating yourself ‘cause you have to spend endless hours of practice just to nail your own riffs when you play live. We’ve done that mistake in the past, ending up staring at our instruments instead of headbanging. We have a few of those parts left in our live set now but I think we play them pretty damn tight nowadays.

Blistering.com: You’ve become a very active live band over the last few years, so what kind of things have you taken away from all of the shows you’ve done?

Stjärnlöv: Playing live is a vital part for us, as for most bands. Every show is rewarding because we get to play for new people and present our art to them. Now we’ve done quite a few shows and tours and gathered a nice collection of memories and experiences, but personally I value all of them highly. It’s like a heavy drug. Once you go down that road there’s no turning back and you’ll be coming back for more. And there is a lot more of live shows ahead for us, that’s for sure.

Blistering.com: What prompted the creation of Ars Vitae?

Stjärnlöv: We actually started out just wanting to make pre-production recordings of a couple of songs. We wanted to push our boundaries a bit and try some new stuff with “Sightless 6” and “Eye.” However we soon felt so confident in those two songs that we came up with an idea to release them straight away. We had had the live tracks lying around for some time waiting to find a proper context to be released in. And now we figured it was time. In the end we also gave our first mini album a touch up and put it all together to form the Ars Vitae album. This release sums up our first 15 years of existence in a good way and it’s a great way for new fans of Diabolical to become familiar with our songs, both the old hits and the new stuff.

Image

Blistering.com: The cover art to Ars Vitae is very striking. What’s the story behind it?

Stjärnlöv: As soon as we decided on the album title which translates to “The Art of Life” and the concept of looking upon the life of the band with past present and future represented, I started to try to figure out a way to represent this in a sort of morbid way. I ended up browsing through old anatomical drawings and decided to do my own interpretations of them. The cover is and interpretation of a drawing from “Anatomia uteri humani gravidi tabulis illustrata” made by William Hunter in 1774. I made it from hundreds of photos of meat, photos of a naked woman and photos of myself lying naked in a bathtub. Those photos were put together, manipulated and then I made a great deal of digital painting on top.

Blistering.com: Tell me about the new studio songs – how old are they? Do you think they represent where the band is headed?

Stjärnlöv: I wanted to try something different with “Eye” and take some influences from midtempo black metal and merge that into the Diabolical sound. The main riff is a really simple rock riff that also draws inspiration from works by Shostakovich. He did some really cool stuff for string quartets that really could have been great death metal riffs. “Sightless 6” is actually built from a riff that was left from the creation of “The Gallery of Bleeding Art.” We had a song back then that almost made it into the album, but was left out in the end. We felt that that riff was too good to be left behind so we picked it up again and built a new song from it. The song begins with that particular riff. I think that these two songs partly represents where we are heading musically. We already have plenty of material for our next album, so I can safely say that you should expect some surprises as well.

Blistering.com: The band still very “cult” in North America, but you hooked up with Abyss Records recently. What do you hope to get out of this partnership?

Stjärnlöv: We want to conquer your continent! Like you said we still haven’t established ourselves enough in your part of the world, but hopefully our partnership will Abyss Records will help to spread our diabolical art across America.

Blistering.com: As someone who has been part of the Swedish metal scene for quite some time, are you comfortable with how the death metal portion is split between the melodic and brutal bands?

Stjärnlöv: I really don’t care. Other bands can play whatever suits them and we will play what suits us. There has been some groundbreaking death metal spawned in this country in the past. And time shall tell if we will break some new ground in the future as well.

Blistering.com: Diabolical has melodic parts, but they’re not full-on like old In Flames or Dark Tranquillity. Have you ever toyed with the idea of becoming more melodic?

Stjärnlöv: Not in the pure Gothenburg way. We have a few Gothenburg-esque riffs in our discography but I think we’ll stay away from those in the future. I think the scene has become oversaturated with bands trying to repeat what In Flames and At the Gates did. All of them have failed so far and they will fail to do so in the future as well. What the Gothenburg bands did in the 90’s was innovation. What the multitude of melodic In Flames-wannabe-bands are doing now is just stagnation. We will always strive for innovation. But if it will result in more melody of some sort or a more brutal approach in the future I can’t really say.

Blistering.com: Finally, what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2011?

Stjärnlöv: More touring, more shows, plenty of songwriting and the recording of our next album. I’m telling you: Our next album will be something out of the ordinary. We have something very special planned.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) Chalice of Black Flames CD EP review by http://www.infernalmasquerade.com

Image

By Dark Emperor

Formed under the moniker of Creeping Death, the band changed names to Chaossworn in 2009. As a promising but underachieving band they released 3 demos and 1 EP before changing names, now with “Chalice of Black Flames” the band is unleashing three powerful songs of pure chaotic Swedish Death/Black Metal.
If you love bands like Dissection, Einherjer and Naglfar, then you will love what Chaossworn brings to the table in this short but sweet EP. While some people might argue that ‘there is nothing new’ presented in “Chalice of Black Flames”, but there is nothing wrong about ‘similar but good’. Because of the lack of releases that feature this Swedish Death/Black sound, we think that Chaossworn deserves a chance in the spotlight since their music is spot on in every single level.
The band starts up this EP with the epic “Crowned and Winged”, a song that features powerful and catchy riffing, paired with hellish vocals and tight drumming. This song immediately had us in headbang-mode since it’s been a while we’ve heard something with this intensity and melody.
Having no time to spare, the band also makes a strong impression with their second song: “Bringer of the Storms”. Featuring a faster pace and more brutal drumming, this song can easily be passed as Marduk or even Dark Funeral if it had more ‘extreme singing’. Closing the EP we got “Chalice of Black Flames”, another powerful piece that also hits harder on the Symphonic Black Metal side of things because of its brutal riffing, massive drumming and an interesting atmosphere.
Mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound, this album sounds like any big-budget release and will blow your eardrums out if you crank it up to 11. The only complaint that we can have about this release is that is very short, but other than that, we hope to listen more from this powerful band.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) Inevitable Decay CD review by http://www.mylastchapter.net

Image

By Kristoffer

To be perfectly honest I never would’ve guessed this to be a recent recording. When I first glanced at the cover and pressed play I was 100% certain this was a re-release of some obscure album from the early 80ies. Everything about Inevitable decayreeks of old school thrash, and so much so that I still have trouble believing this in fact is a young (youngish, at least as they’ve released five demos prior to this) Swedish band’s debut album. Not only is the material presented here right on the money, but also the butt-ugly artwork and lo-fi booklet design.

As I’ve stated dozens of times in my reviews I really don’t care for thrash metal, or at least I very seldom do so. There are extremely few acts of the genre I really enjoy, and most of the time I find it to be too sloppy of a metal style, not to mention too soft and melodic. While Entrench most certainly embodies the sloppiness of the earlier days this is far from soft and melodic, but more of a straight-forward tribute to unrelenting thrash joy.

The production is incredibly thin, a bit too thin. Sure, this definitely sounds true, but the recording is a tad shitty in all of its weakness and thinness. But then again it does birth an atmosphere, I’ll admit that; one that oozes aggression and testosterone. A lot of the ferocity is thanks to the vocals, which unlike the remainder of Entrench’s recipe doesn’t ooze nostalgia. It’s a gnarly, snarly, throaty scream, painting the picture of a phlegm covered microphone. With the straight-forward riffing and song structures it balances things out nicely with a great, and well needed, dose of brutality. Musically I’m quite certain they’ve taken a few pointers from the absolute earliest of Metallica, but with the biggest dose of inspiration coming from Kreator and the early German scene of thrash metal.

The basic recipe for success is that of the mid-80ies German scene (well, pretty damn close to the entire recipe), which I suppose might seem off-putting to the genuine thrashers out there. I couldn’t really say since it’s not my general cup of tea, but what I can say is Entrench have handled this inspiration bloody well, and instead of delivering a stale and tedious copy cay album Inevitable decayfeels like a vibrant tribute. Thin production, raggedy-ass riffing, somewhat fast paced, and most of all insanely adrenaline-ridden. I mean, this truly isn’t my thing, but I have to admit they do win me over in the end. The love for this type of thrash really comes through, and even a stuck-up brutal death metaller like myself can’t help but get struck by the arrow of a half-naked fat dwarf (with a bunch of studded leather belts and permed hair).

MAAX (U.S.) Six Pack Witchcraft DIGI CD EP review by http://www.apochs.net

Image

By apochs.net

After a strong full-length debut, Maax return with their follow-up release, Six Pack Witchcraft, a five song EP just under fifteen minutes in length. This release is an intense Satanic Black Metal romp with a strong Punk influence and attitude that is often fueled by alcoholic rage that brings in reminiscing shades of first wave Black Metal acts, as well as what it seems like Darkthrone has been attempting to create on their more recent albums. Of course, this release isn't without some faults.

Six Pack Witchcraft is an excellent EP that plays host to plenty of fast, angry Black Metal tracks, like "Fire in the Hole" which jumps comes at you like a fiery fist from the devil himself. This is the track that really shows some of the more Punk influence that is incorporated into the mix thanks to the group chants. It also becomes pretty obvious during "Go Fuck Yourself" and "Bastards", which is pretty clear thanks to the two-stepping drum work incorporated, as well as the guitars that seem to blend both Black and Punk styles together nicely. Of course, you can really hear some of the alcoholic references here and there on the album, but of course none are as obvious as during "Six Pack Witchcraft" which even speaks about cracking open some alcohol in the name of Satan, which is enough to cause cottonmouth on those unfortunate enough to not have alcohol at the time of listening to this release.

The only problem with Six Pack Witchcraft, really, is within the production quality. While this album does a nice job at creating a raw sounding production, it's hard to get the full effect from it since the drums are practically crystal clear compared to the rest of the material. The guitars sound thick and have the traditional Black Metal kind of distortion on them, and the vocals are, of course, a bit overmodulated and sunk into the mix to be just a little louder then the guitars, leaving the drumming to often sound as if it is drowning it out, and would do so if it weren't that one snare drum sounds muffled compared to the rest of the pieces to the kit, and the echo seems to be far louder then the actual shouting vocals that were recorded.

Outside of the odd recording quality and the random washout moments that appear here and there, such as during "Die by the Ax", this EP is a solid release full of anger, energy, Satanism, and alcohol, as well as a great follow-up to the band's debut. If you're looking for something that is just full of unbridled rage but doesn't venture anywhere near the blast-beat only type of music writing that is looming throughout the "third generation" of Black Metal, then Six Pack Witchcraft is right up your alley. This short, but oh so sweet metal rampage is fantastic, and really brings things back to the way they were when this style was just coming together, as well as the perfect release to have on repeat while getting drunk, whether in the name of Satan or not.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.funeralrain.net

Image

By Samuel

"Silence" sounds euphoric, with nostalgic, triumphant riffing - 8/10

Fester! Norwegian old school death metal! I was excited when I saw the email containing this gem in my inbox. I LOVE obscure, putrid old school death metal, and the bands from the old Norwegian scene are among my favorites. Old Funeral, Thou Shalt Suffer, Amputation, Molestation, Cadaver, and of course FESTER! Their first album “Winter of Sin” which was reissued last year by Abyss Records, is one of my favorite death metal albums. It is because of that career defining album that Fester are associated with death metal.
It only makes sense that Abyss would next reissue Fester second and last album, Silence. Contrastingly, Silence is not a death metal record. Not at all. Literally the only shared trait between these norsemen’s debut and sophmore epitaph is the shrieking vocal style.
If it’s not death metal, what is it? Is this a forgotten Norwegian black metal record ala Burzum and Mayhem? I don’t know what to call this, actually. It’s melodic and very black metal influenced (not surprising, they are from Norway). It’s full of clean guitar and catchy melodies, for fuck’s sake! To put things in perspective, there are guitar leads on this album that would not be out of place on a Van Halen album.
I’m not sure what this can be compared to; the closest acts I can think of are a couple of underground black metal bands called Atavysm and Bitterfrost. If I had to put it in a genre, I would call it melodic or maybe even progressive black metal. Positive black metal, if I may have creative license. The songs are filled with a kind of emotional warmth I often get from Agalloch.
If you’re still not convinced of the oddball nature of this album, let me offer one final proof: this album is happy. By that I mean it’s very upbeat and optimistic. It has a generally uplifting mood, and makes me feel, well uh, good. Even the aforementioned black metal shrieks sound nearly euphoric in conjunction with the nostalgic, triumphant riffing.
Not that it doesn’t have ferocious sections and pounding drums, but it completely lacks the ferocity of Marduk, the melancholy of Burzum, or the regal evil of Dissection. Silence is a mellow ride over snowcapped mountains, on the back of your pet dragon, at sunrise.
Now, before I close this review, you may ask, is all of this positive or negative commentary? I’d be glad to spell it out for you: Generally, when a death or black metal band adapts such a commercial sound, I hate it, but it works very well for Fester. Silence is a classic of its own that stands tall and proud next to Winter of Sin. I would recommend this album to black metal fans as well as anyone who likes any kind of melodic metal with blackened influence, whether that be Agalloch, Dissection, or Arghoslent. I give Fester’s Silence a solid 8/10.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.metalteamuk.net

Image

By Paul Maddison

Dutch death metal crew Bodyfarm follow hot on the heels of such notable legends as Hail of Bullets and others coming from the Dutch Death Metal Fraternity, making waves spreading their death metal disease amongst the unsuspecting public. Non-compromising death metal is what the PR blurb states, and this is not far from the truth.
What you have is a colourful mix of classic death metal, both of the US (Morbid Angel and Obituary) and European scenes (like the aforementioned) with interludes reminiscent of that wonderful Swedish grit and determination (early-Grave), whilst not purely rotten, the barrage of pounding bass and low end guttural vocal delivery very much wets the appetite of any death metal fan. ‘Final Redemption’ chugs and pulverises with stomach churning grunt and the double kick drum sound thunders your mind into submission. Ok you will probably think that this is nothing out of the ordinary, well, you would be right, but when you have a sound and arrangement capable of heralding the four horseman of the apocalypse, you really don’t care. This is death metal, done in an organic and classic way, there are none of these manufactured modern sounds, or fake blast beats present or necessary for that matter. This 5-track hard hitter is pretty much a summary of the organic death metal religion, whether you’re a fan or not, Bodyfarm are certainly worth an attentive listen, the closer ‘Slaves of War’ has you subsiding into a comfortable pair of boots in terms of prowess and quality deliverance, Bodyfarm have a voice, a sound, and a knack for arranging songs that expel mosh pit endurance for years to come.

HUMANGLED (Italy) interview
by http://www.teethofthedivine.com

Image

Article by Jodi Michael

Similar to the intestinal parasite that must be removed from the punctured gut by being wound around a stick and sucked slowly from the wound, Humangled churn and slurp at the innards, and can only be removed forcibly. Admit it: you’re hungry now, aren’t you?! These sick Italian deathsters bring forth Fractal, their punishing 2010 release. Contact was made with founding members Andrew Goreds and Luke Scurb, who were eager to let TOTD pick their brains.

Humangled was once called Putrid Sequence, back in the ’90s. Can you explain how Humangled came to be?

Andrew Goreds: Humangled was born when we (Goreds/Scurb) decided to transform Putrid Sequence, [a] grind-industrial duo, into a death metal band. The change of moniker became a necessity for the different music proposal and line-up configuration.

2010 has seen the release of your full-length, Fractal, on Abyss Records. How has the album been received so far?

Luke Scurb: We collected a lot of appreciation with our debut! The reviews we got till now [were] only best rates or totally bad. That also explains maybe why we like to say that “they can love us or hate us, there is no intermediate position.”

The songs on the new album are an interesting blend of blunt death metal, choppy progressive elements, and melancholy. Which bands have influenced your sound?

AG: There are of course traces of some classic bands like Death, Carcass, Pestilence and many others that we can’t deny; it’s quite normal being grown as musicians in the early 90s, but we don’t like to refer to any specific one but only to the overall “taste” of death metal that includes both aggressive-brutal and groovy-melodic elements.

How do you feel the band has progressed from Edge of Beyond to Fractal?

LS: The music proposal of Humangled is in progress. Since the beginning we had no idea about “how” our ideas can be explained. Our sound, and lyrics too, are improving from time to time. We felt that the CD Edge of Beyond was really a boundary overpassed by Fractal and now the opinion of the audience conforms to what we think about our sound.

Image

Fractal was mixed and mastered by the mighty Dan Swanö. How did you get together with him?

AG: It was really a pleasure for us to get an immediate connection with a master like Dan, when we exposed in our emails the idea of [the] sound we wanted to have in our first album. We wanted to contact a pro like him to avoid a lack of quality in the mixing/mastering process, in our choice also consider[ed] the extent of his musician and producer experiences.

You released a demo, Anatomic Butchery, in 1997, and then Refoetalize came out in 2007. What was the band doing during that span of 10 years between the two?

LS: We disbanded for personal reasons. Not properly for misunderstandings, but just because we had different intentions and incompatible ways to reach the same goals.

Why does Humangled choose to write lyrics in the English language?

AG: We feel it quite natural, because our will is to produce a composite message of music plus visuals plus lyrics, and being understandable to as many as possible make[s] (American) English a key part of this process.

Are there any touring plans in your future?

LS: Unfortunately not at the moment. Many are asking for this, but we cannot confirm anything precisely for now.

What are some great extreme Italian metal groups that you think we should check out?

AG: Some acts from Italy are now getting known, not anymore in power metal only, and we really appreciate some of them like Illogicist, Hour of Penance and Fleshgod Apocalypse.

Is there anything else that I’ve failed to ask that we should know?

LS: Not really, thanks! But we take the occasion to say that our motto, “hypocrisy demands brutality,” is a common line for Humangled songs that deprecate some of the human aberrations. In fact, the album[‘s] purpose is to explain that how nature compose[s] fractal forms, mind and human behaviours are fractal as well. We like to add “splatter/gore” spicy elements but not to write about themes of pure fantasy, as we think reality is a good source for death metal ideas.

CHRIST BEHEADED (U.S.) Open the Gates of Hell CD review by http://www.masterful-magazine.com

Image

By masterful-magazine

Black metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana featuring members from Demiricous and Summon the Destroyer. The sound is pretty much inspired by (early) Marduk, Dark Funeral and Unlord, with a recognizable foundation of German old school thrash metal in the riffing as well as the pumping rhythm section. The eerie sparse melodies are in the vein of Setherial's "Lords Of the Nightrealm". The lone lead/solo in the title cut forms a highlight and welcome addition to this otherwise blistering traditional Nordic assault. 'Decomposed' and 'Sanguine Moon' are slow building tracks with a few crushing midtempo sections in between the more typical raging segments, reminding of the genre's earlier days. 'The Cleansing Ritual' starts off with the same "Exorcist III : Legion" sample as Cryptopsy's classic "None So Vile" album, a weak choice on the end of Christ Beheaded. Compared to a lot of other black metal combos Christ Beheaded effectively use their death metal heaviness and German thrash metal undertones to their utmost effect. The album was recorded at Basement Rage Studio in Beechwood, Indiana with The Gates Of Slumber drummer Bob Fouts at the helm, resulting in a high end but murky enough production. The artwork, design and lay-out are good, but not especially spectacular. The medieval painting and readable logo are a definite plus. Once this band gets their image right, their overall presentation will benefit from it. Overall, a very promising start for this up-and-coming US black metal group.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) Rot.In.Pieces Demo review by http://www.maelstrom.nu

Image

By Mladen Škot

Oh, yes. Swedes were once known for producing a certain kind of music known as "death metal" and it didn't have much to do with happy melodies and polished sound. It was raw, nasty, evil and downright crazy. It was the good old early Swedish death metal. For Corrosive Carcass, it looks like it's never too late to be early.
Rot.In.Pieces sounds like a blast from the past, but also like someone is having a blast right now. Maybe it's just because it is a demo, but the sound is lovely - real, real drums, the way they sound at rehearsals, with all the uneven hits and misses, the real old meaty Swedish guitar sound, a real, crazy, maniacal vocalist and a growling bass guitar.
The solos sound as if the guitars are plugged straight into the amplifier with added distortion and without an effect rack looking like an aircraft carrier.
Corrosive Carcass obviously didn't want to hide anything, and it wasn't necessary anyway. Guys, if you ever make a full-length, just keep this sound. Not that we mind the length of Rot.In.Pieces - quite the contrary. After listening to it and hearing all sorts of classic riffs and combinations of everything possible, even the modest 18 minutes divided into seven tracks sounded like a complete full-length. Go figure. We're not sure if we have heard anything new (as in "innovative") or anything old (as in "used") but we're sure we've just listened to a great band. And we had to force stop listening to Rot.In.Pieces repeatedly in order to get to the next promo.

ANGREPP (Sweden) Warfare CD review by http://www.hellridemusicforums.com

Image

By Janet Willis

When approaching this release be prepared for a wrecking ball of old-school crust and death/black thrash savagery. This Swedish group is pure toxic thrash and very much at home with fans of acts like: Hellhammer, Darkthrone, Venom, High on Fire, Skeletonwitch, Scorched Earth, Ravens Creed, Lair of the Minotaur, and label mates MAAX. Another perfect hybrid of fireball riffs ala Kreator and early and golden thrash, a metallic punk FU vice, amphetamine powered rhythm battery, and total pillaging insanity. A definite classic aggressive metal influenced and well-rounded sounding band, this stuff tears everything up with roots and all. As addictive as it is ugly and melodic, this is one that I can’t seem to get enough of.

Many of you are probably thinking: It’s just a black thrash type of project so it’s nothing new right?

Yes, possibly … but it does it so damn well and so, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, or better yet, “if it kicks ass then don’t fuck with it”. I personally can never get enough good rhythm, maybe I’m biased as a bass player, but that is one big selling point for me and I solely guarantee that if you have any sort of interest in any of the mentioned bands you will be sold on Angrepp. Split your ears with this one nice and loud, it reminds us all of the days when Metal was fun and furious. This release has been highly anticipated in the underground so get it and sink your teeth into this you filthy rocking rodents!

BODYFARM (Netherlands) Bodyfarm CD EP review by wickedchannel

Image

By Mike

I was just sent this promo today and I popped it in. I have to tell you that I am loving this EP. I have listened to it at least a dozen times already.
From the outset of the album, there is a minute and a half intro entitled Into Battle. It has the sounds of a symphonic power metal band, so I thought that was what I was getting myself into. Wow, was I wrong. Once the album proper starts off with the a song with the namesake of the band, Bodyfarm, you are in a whole different realm. It starts off with a death metal / grindcore type riff almost verging on thrash metal. Then, the growl hits and you know that you have some death metal goodness coming at you.
Throughout the four vocals tracks of the album, you are treated to plenty of death metal riffs and solid leads mix in with some very solid vocals. When you can get your hands on Bodyfarm’s self titled release on 04.26.11, I suggest that you do. It is good listening.
In the late summer of ’09, drummer Quint Meerbeek drove guitarist/vocalist Thomas Wouters home after Thomas did a gig with his previous band in Rotterdam. Not content with the band Thomas played in at that time, he asked Quint if he was interested in forming a brand new no-nonsense death metal formation. A few days later the two of them hooked up for a few beers to talk some shit over, and a week later they met in the rehearsal room. This combination seemed an instant success, and BODYFARM was born, hailing from their beloved hometown of Amersfoort. Heavily influenced by bands like Grave, Vomitory, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Massacre, Vader, and many others, they decided NOT to be a specifically innovative, technical or refreshing band: “We play plain death metal, and have fun while doing it. As long as it’s aggressive, catchy, groovy and raw we are good with it. We are not doing something new, we’re just doing what sounds good to us and try to keep it relatively primitive. Our only message is to enjoy death metal the way it’s supposed to sound” .. .. BODYFARM is rehearsing weekly, working hard on their repertoire. Thomas and Quint decided to be the rock solid foundation, and creative force of the band to make sure BODYFARM will always keep it’s unique but recognizable sound. “So we went looking for musicians who wanted to play with us live, and eventually found them. Bram as a guitarist, and Mathieu, a bass player. Both experienced and fast learning musicians, and that is exactly what we’re looking for” BODYFARM is working hard on composing new songs every week to thrash with a worthy setlist. With succes! They have shared the stage with bands like HAIL OF BULLETS, HOUWITSER, and many others, and working hard on their live reputation. If you are interested as a band to do a gig with us, or are you a venue who wants us to play? Contact us! .. .. BODYFARM just finished recording their first CD . BODYFARM is currently signed with ABYSS RECORDS, so stay tuned for what’s more to come..

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) The Spirit of Warfare CD review by http://autothrall.blogspot.com

Image

By autothrall

Here we've got a debut album about a decade in the making, from a virtual unknown in the Swedish sphere: Hyperborean. Now, as with most subjects ancient and Greek, the name 'Hyperborean' alone instantly initiates salivation. A few other, small time black metal acts have used the moniker, but if the quality of The Spirit of Warfare is any indication, this is to whom it will inevitable stick. What surprises me about the band is how they manage to write so effectively in this genre with such a clean tone. At first, I was almost uncomfortable with the level of polish, not at all common for this style, but it creates an incredible balance between the hoarse vocals, glazing melodies, stolid drumming and sparse piano accompaniment.

Dissection, Immortal, I and Borknagar are good jumping off points in comparing the tone and writing of The Spirit of Warfare, but not precise parallels. The guitars are configured into patterns that best inspire sorrow and glory, as in the verses to "Weapon Making" or "The Last Stand of Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae". Almost without exception, the individual riffs have been meticulously crafted to provide a sensuous, gleaming experience in both the rhythms and leads; the vocals a pendulous, cautionary narrative to the historical battles that have inspired the lyrics. There are, upon occasion, some familiar riffs mixed in to offset those more original, and perhaps we could accuse Hyperborean of laying on the melody a little too thick, but the inclinations they create towards revisiting the material is truly telling. The pianos are enormously glassy and effective, especially in "The Sick Man of Europe", and a delightful affectation dowsed upon the equally reverent guitar lines.

If one thinks of black metal only in terms of enormous, crude distortion and lo-fidelity rebellion, then this debut is not likely to please. For those unopposed to a little grace, a classical influence, a symphonic saturation, The Spirit of Warfare plays out like a galleria of European nobility paving mosaic tributes to a the storied past of their countries. Its not exactly lighthearted: the vocals see fit to spew carnage across the luminous exhilaration, but there is no question of their knack for writing hooks that spin around in your mind, tasteful spikes of melody that flow well into each other like ducts into a central spring. It might often be 'too pretty', and a few of the longer (7-9 minute) pieces might well profit from a trimming of their sugary fat, but it's an experience easy to commit to memory and a tangible exhibition of talent, with several of its constituents ALONE worth the price of attention ("Channeling the Spirit of Warfare", "Weapon Making", "The Last Stand of Leonidas...", "The Sick Man of Europe").

MetalManiacs.com ~ Special Feature: ABYSS RECORDS

Image

By: Mike Abominator

Welcome to the new era of the metal underground. There are quite a few labels clawing their way out of the grave these days. In the underground, it is crucial the keep the quality of the releases top notch, and have that old school feel to what the music represents. It is also important to reach out to the digital age, on your OWN terms. It is a reality, that, if you want to run a successful label, you have to have the best of both worlds so to speak. Dan Fergeson has been involved in the metal underground for years. He decided to turn his passion into a full on record label and start up Abyss Records. I decided that it was time to get a talk in with Dan to give people an idea of how it goes running a label, and get some insight of how he views things these days. Check out our interview, then also check out the reviews section after that. I talk about a big group of CDs that Dan had sent me to listen to and review. Good stuff down there! And then there are links to get into contact with Dan and Abyss Records at the end of this article.

1. Hails Dan! Thank you for your time with doing this. Let’s get started shall we! I actually want to go back to the beginning. How did you get into heavy metal and what are your early memories and bands/albums that you first got into?

DAN: I would have to say the day I really was possessed by Heavy Metal is when I heard IRON MAIDEN “The Number Of The Beast” around W.A.S.P. first album around 1984, and soon after heavier stuff like Slayer, Celtic Frost, Kreator, Naplm Death, Anal Cunt, Old Lady Driver’s, D.R.I., Dead Horse, Immolation, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Carcass came around soon to be followed by Darkthrone, Mayhem, ect…. 1990 was the year it really took off for me Death Metal & start of Black Metal as we know it today.

2. Did you always live in Indianapolis? How was the metal scene coming up in your area? Any favorite shows that you can recall?

DAN: Indianapolis is pretty boring, but guess laid back city, the scene has had some great bands come from it as well bands that suck and never give up it seems. Sure the same in most cities, just some better than others. My favorite shows in Indy ever hands D.R.I., Slayer /Motorhead / Overkill, Dead Horse, Skeletal Earth, Radiation Sickness & F.U.C.T. shows back in late 80’s early 90’s.

3. So at some point, you just said “FUCK IT!” and decided to start a label. How did the start of Abyss Records come about? Didn’t you actually start as a distro back in the day?

DAN: Believe it or not by selling JL America releases while same time pushing Emperor Demos, Burzum cassettes, Black Funeral / Darkness Enshroud releases and merchandise. Use to work with Mike Ford front man & founder of Black Funeral doing “A View Into The Abyss ‘Zine”. The label thing started more serious fall of 2008.

4. You were/are obviously a fan, so did you have an idea of what release that you wanted to put out first? And even the next few releases after that first one?

DAN: No not really, just kind of started to fall in place and I said FUCK IT, let’s do this and give it my all and best to make a quality label like they use to be. A label where most fans you like your stuff are most likely going to be into most of the releases if not almost all or all. I only release bands I personal like and support, not about how much or how little they sell but quality music to my ears and hope others feel the same.

5. I think the misconception for a few people was that Abyss was just a “black metal” label at first. There are black metal bands on the label like Hat, Christ Beheaded and Eternal Helcaraxe. But, as with the formula of any successful label, there are other types of metal in the mix with bands like Pasadena Napalm Division and Dead Horse bringing the old school thrash/crossover, the next Swedish death metal kings Corrosive Carcass and the long lost classic Fester album re-release of “Silence”. Did you always set out to be an all around heavy metal label?

DAN: Yes, I agree a lot of people jump to conclusions on what my label is about and or maybe not give bands the chance because they are not on front page of every metal magazine. I say pick the shit up and give it a chance, might just knock your dick in the dirt….hahahaha I just wanted to release all genres of stuff I like and or grew up listening too and bands I would support rather on my label or not. It’s just great to be working with bands like PASADENA NAPALM DIVISON, DEAD HORSE, FESTER, TORTURE DIVISION, ect….. people I grew up listening to involved in other bands or same.

6. Now I have seen you set up your distro booth at both local shows and also bigger festivals around the country. You obviously need to make money and get the products out there, but do you also see this as a way to make new connections for your business, or just a big pain in the ass? It has to get boring at some point watching bands you don’t like and making sure assholes aren’t stealing stuff? hahaha.

DAN: I will be honest here…. You can get some great connections and most important new fans of my artist and or customers in general. As aspect of making money, ect….. it’s more a pain in the ass and cost more than it’s worth to transport the shit back and forth, ect….. never really made profit doing it, done best at old Milwaukee Metalfest one year, but even that year I was told by other sellers sales was down as well attendance. That was only place any fucks stole anything was in Milwaukee Metalfest one year. CIM was good because it was close, ect….. just fucking HOT !!!!

Image

7. Running a record label is an interesting thing at this point of time. Obviously the “major” labels are dying off and CD sales are down. But heavy metal fans are a different breed of course. The underground is thriving and killer labels are all over the place releasing new music. The collectable aspects of metal are especially popular with vinyl and even tapes being put out to ravenous collectors. There are also labels embracing the whole “digital age” and getting involved with digital downloads. Where do you stand on this?

DAN: Even metal sales are down to be honest, can’t sell 1000 CD’s like use to 5 years ago, people who download free and are killing the music industry as well bands futures. People are just to disposable these days and don’t value stuff as much, but at least there is still the die hard metal heads who collect and keep things alive. I could give a care less about Ioad, Digital downloads, ect….. I’m 100% collector !!!

8. Do you plan on getting into the digital down load arena? You also embrace the “old school” way with the die hard collectors editions, with colored vinyl and limited pressings. Can you have it both ways? For label survival, why the fuck not right?

DAN: All Abyss Records releases are available on most all major download sites Amazon, Itunes, as well others to purchase the artist music. Also can find Abyss Records artist on Pandora.com, Last.fm, Facebook, MySpace, ect…..

9. Is Abyss Records now your full time job? If not what do you do for work to pay the bills?

DAN: Yes, it can be stressful and I don’t run it using loans, credit cards, ect….. I survive sometimes better than others….

10. The era of record labels having to have “major distrobution”, print TONS of CDs, have a fancy office and a staff of people, and trying to fight the digital file sharing is now over. People like you Dan have changed the game and brought everything back to it’s roots and in house. This also brings a quality and passion that got lost with the corporate fucks that sold their souls years ago. Tell me about the day to day operations of Abyss Records.

DAN: Well first off thanks for taking notice on how I do run things and do try to keep it old school and fair for bands, not taking the rights from bands and fucking them over like big labels do. I know some bands who want to release stuff through my label has asked their older labels for rights back; even though not in print anymore or been for some time. The label still horde the rights from those bands, leaving the music lost in their grips.
I just get up and work off and on most the day 7 days a week working from home, I pretty much give up my free time for this passion….. METAL !!!

11. Now if you had to get the fuck out of dodge, FAST, and you only had room for 10 albums in your suit case, what 10 would you pick?

DAN: That shit gets too hard, I would burn up debating……. Hahaha I would have to grab as much 1990 Swedish Death Metal and early Black Metal as possible…. My out of print stuff if possible….

12. Tell me about any future plans that you have for Abyss Records, upcoming releases and all of that.

DAN: Well as long as people buy my releases and support what I do, I will continue bringing metal to the fans and helping keep it all alive.

13. I want to thank you again Dan for your time. Now is the time to share links for the label and also any last words.

DAN: Thank you for your support metal brother and all those who have support Abyss Records to this day, spread the word and support !!!!! http://www.officialabyssrecords.com
Vote Ron Paul 2012 or Tyranny !!!!

REVIEWS SECTION:

DIE HARD “EVIL ALWAYS RETURN/EMISSARIES OF THE REAPER.
Image

This is some bad ass death/thrash/punk&roll shit. It is heavily influenced by Venom. But what isn’t? hahaha. Die Hard do bring their own stamp to the satanic party though. This is a compilation of their original demo, their first EP and some rehearsal tracks. The “Evil…” EP was a good one when it came out and these maniacs started their world takeover from that. But the demo and rehearsal songs are where I drink the cup of blood! Those recordings are fucking awesome! The EP stuff is killer as well, I think the production is a little too clean for this ugly death noise though. The demo songs are where the band really stand out with the murderous material. It has that raw and evil vibe and sound, that cemetery/graveyard type recording that is fucking killer. Same with the raw rehearsal tracks. If you like the same shit that I do, GET THIS! BAD ASS AND ESSENTIAL!

HAT “VORTEX OF DEATH”.
Image

This has both the good elements and bad elements of what represents black metal for me. But the good far outweighs the bad with this album. Hat play the typical good Norwegian black metal style. The only bad parts are the thin and powerless guitars and over all sound. This does come up from time to time with this music. But Hat does have some power with their riffs, so they can get away with it at times. The creepy spoken word samples on the first song “Inhumanus Revelatio” add a killer evil vibe over the top of the atmosphere of darkness that is already there. There are actually creepy smaples and elements throughout this album that drag me to hell. A very good thing when listening to black metal. There are keyboards here and there, but they are done well and fit what is going on.There is enough of teh good type of traditional black metal on here to appeal to fans of that style. It is raw and simple song structure wise for the most part. But there are parts that have experimentation and throw in some different type of stuff that fits the atmosphere of the album. It is not totally aggressive as far as the attack goes. But it kind of puts you in a dark trance with the way the music creeps in on you. Good stuff. If you are a fan of the early to mid 90s black metal stuff, with a few different twists thrown in, GET THIS!

THOUSAND YEAR WAR “TYRANTS AND MEN”.
Image

Not my cup of blood, but this is very well done. If you like Amon Amarth, you will like this album. It is melodic death metal, which I don’t feel belongs in the same sentence for the most part. It has that “viking” vibe to it that those Swedish guys also have. TYW are from Alaska. VERY unique to say the least. It seems that mastermind Hiram Lohr knows what he is doing. The riffs are memorable to fans of this style and the prouduction is fat and crispy, heavy enough to punch you at times. Again, this is not the usual style that I enjoy, but I think that quite a few people would be into this band. For my tastes, I prefer when the band gets all out aggressive, like the fasts parts of the album opener “Defiance”. Fans of the more melodic style of heavy metal will also dig this album. It has plenty of riffs and notes that fit your coffin.

DIABOLICAL “ARS VITAE”.
Image

These guys have been at it for a while now. They originally came from theie fellow Swedish brothers At The Gates/Dissection school of death/thrash/black/at times melodic metal. This is a compilation of sorts. It has some new songs, which are more “majestic” and atmospheric, almost doom metal, of the mid paced variety. It is slower to mid paced with a dark atmosphere. This is slightly boring to me and I wouldn’t really get into it enough to buy it to be honest. Next up are the live songs. These songs are much more aggressive and faster paced. There are slower and mid paced parts, but it is more attacking and thrashier. Pretty cool thrashy and at times melodic death. There are some technical parts thrown in as well. The live recording is very well done on a killer sound board it seems. And then the bands initial debut EP is also on here. The songs are raw and the production is a little off. The guitars sound weird as fuck. The vocals are total old school Kreator mixed with black metal. But the material will appeal to those who like death/thrash with some technical elements thrown in there. Not bad overall. This will be essential for fans of Diabolical!

NOCTIS IMPERIUM “NIHIL”.
Image

This is an EP that has some studio material and also some live songs from these maniacs from Venezuela. On the drums here for the studio songs is Nick Barker in all of his triggered glory. I have never liked the sound of triggered drums. So this left a bad taste in my mouth from the start. But these guys play some good black/death from the Morbid Angel school. There is even a Morbid Angel cover “Maze of Torment” done in the studio and also live on this EP. Fans of MA, Deicide, Krisiun and the more death metal influenced black metal hybrid stuff will love this! The song “Noctis Imperium” is BAD ASS! Totally in your face riffs that kick ass! If these guys would get some old school sounding drums and have that graveyard feel to their sound, they would be deadly! But this will appeal to a wider audience with how it sounds now. It is very well done for sure.

SINCERA “CURSED AND PROUD”.
Image

This is a side project from the members of Fester and Algol. It isn’t far removed from Fester in the way it mixes black metal and death metal in the classic sense. There are other elements thrown in there. This has the prodding mid paced banging of Norwegian black metal bands like the old Ulver stuff and the older Isengard material. There are some fast banging parts here and there, but it is mostly a mid paced style that the band plays. There are quite a few tempo changes throughout the album though, which you can hear in the opening song “Tall and Proud”. Now there are a few studio songs to open this album up. Then there are a few live songs thrown into the mix as well. The live songs are raw and were taken from the audio of a portable camera. Surprisingly, the sound isn’t horrible, as MOST recordings turn out horrible when done like this. But this is a cool album for those into the bands that I mentioned above, and the bands that play a more doomy and atmospheric form of black metal.

HYPERBOREAN “THE SPIRIT OF WARFARE”.
Image

I had never heard of this band at all before getting this CD. They come from Sweden and play “melodic black metal”. I didn’t even know that was a genre! Hahaha. Just hearing that term makes me CRINGE! But Hyperborean isn’t bad. They have elements of black metal, thrash metal and death metal in their music. They are technical and progressive as well. There are quite a bit of melodies and harmonies in this music. The songs can get long and with many time changes. NOT my cup of blood. But if you like blackened and proggy death/thrash, then this is your band.

THE GARDNERZ “THE SYSTEM OF NATURE”.
Image

More Swedes. This time they are playing doom/death metal. It is like a death metal Solitude Aeturnus. Not a bad thing as I’m a SA fan. The name is weird, I was expecting some funny punked out crossover type of band. But the cover and layout looked so serious, I was confused. Anyways, I hear both the older and middle eras of Paradise Lost with these guys. The production is clean and the songs are written in rock formula, but these guys play the doom very well. “Lady in the Grave” could have been on one of the Paradise Lost or My Dying Bride demos. They do kill some killer momentum when they slow the build up and drop into the slower quiet parts. That’s what made some of that U.K. doom so legendary is that it never let up, it didn’t fuck around. It might have been slow, but it still kicked your ass. These guys aren’t as good as the other Swedish doom/death metal band Isole, but they have some promise. If you like the classic U.K. doom bands I mentioned (also older Anathema) then you should get this! The Winter and Vulcano covers are a cool idea, but I’m not a huge fan of either version.

FESTER “SILENCE”.
Image

What a unique and classic METAL album. Some like to call it black/death. Some call it black/death/thrash. It might be a mix of all of those. Fester really created something special here with “Silence”. It might be one of the most well loved and respected metal albums in the history of the underground. It reminds me of a mix of old Samael and maybe some of the early Greek black metal bands like Rotting Christ and Varathron. But it also mixes in some creepy and weird elements like the original way these guys structure and write the songs. And the vocals can be all over the place with the usual shrieks and also some whispers. There is also quite a bit of traditional heavy metal influence thrown into the mix. Regardless of what anyone wants to call it, this is a fucking amazing album! One of the classics that no one has ever heard! Hahaha. Or should I say more people NEED to hear! It is a breath of fresh air. It is metal done RIGHT. And that means it just sounds good. It sounds natural. This is ESSENTIAL to anyone that is a fan of a great metal album! ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION!

ANGREPP “PREPARE FOR THE ATTACK”.
Image

Here is the demo from these Swedish maniacs that put out the killer “Warfare” album last year. I always dug this demo and this was a cool surprise in my Abyss Records package. These guys play angry black/thrash with some old death metal thrown in the mix. It has a style similar to fellow Swedish legends Bestial Mockery (though not as crushing or as great). They mix that with some Celtic Frost/Hellhammer type stuff. But this demo thrashes and pounds along with an attack that any fan of black thrashing mayhem will like. I woulnd’t say that this is essential, but it is a good demo with some kick ass songs. If you like good old standard black/thrash with touches of death, then you will want to get a copy of this demo! And if you are a fan of the “Warfare” album, then hunt this demo down now!

DEAD HORSE “BOIL(ING)”.
Image

Dead Horse have always been such a unique band with their own sound. This is a re-release of their 1996 EP given the fancy 2011 treatment. I had never really gotten into them. But their debut album “Horsecore…” has developed quite a cult following over the years. I remember when they played here in L.A. in the early 90s, there were a lot of people that were excited to see them. Now the music on this EP is not the crossover/thrashy stuff that was on the debut. It is more mid paced. It has some explosions of fast stuff like on the song “Reach Around”. Now I will say that this stuff is better than any “new” metal band of the mid/late 90s, or even the grunge stuff that was so popular in the early 90s. But at times the music on here reminds me of that era of music. It’s not bad at all. Just not my cup of blood. I have used that one before obviously. At times the music seems to be ready to explode and get all crazy and fast, but it remains at the same mid paced style for the most part. This is just for the die hard fans of Dead Horse.

BODYFARM “BODYFARM”.
Image

Here we have some killer death metal of the old school variety, that comes from The Netherlands. Now this was a self released EP that Dan had sent me. They will be unleashing a full length album on Abyss Records in the near future. And what we have here is some bad ass old school death metal. There is a very big Grave influence. I also hear a little Bolt Thrower and Asphyx at times. The attack is simple and crushing. The sound is heavy and the band moves at a deathly mid paced pace for the most part, but also slows it down and can speed it up with the best of them! This EP has a cool horror movie style intro that sets the bloody table for the 4 songs that come to destroy everything in sight. The production is crisp and clear, but not too polished. It is still heavy and does the overall sound of the band well. If you like old school death metal, then you need to hunt this EP down. And keep an eye out for that full length Dan will be putting out. BODYFARM KILLS!!!!!!

There are a few releases from the Abyss lair that I had already reviewed. Here are some links to check those out:

ENTRENCHED “INTEVITABLE DECAY”.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) Inevitable Decay CD review by http://www.blistering.com

Image

By Justin Donnelly

Entrench has been around in one form or another for the better part of the last six years, and have in that time, released no less than five demos. But after numerous line-up changes and constant refinement of their sound, the four piece act have finally unleashed their debut full-length effort Inevitable Decay.

Given the rather amateur cover artwork, I really had no idea what to expect from Entrench. But within the opening couple of minutes of the opening track “As Dawn Breaks,” there was absolutely no question what sound Entrench were aiming for – and that’s old school thrash. The sound of “As Dawn Breaks” is best described as a cross between classic Kreator and Sodom, and perhaps even a touch of early Destruction and Metallica in places. This song is as every bit as authentic as stuff you would expect from a thrash band who recorded their debut around the mid ‘80’s, except that Entrench are a relatively new and young act on the scene, and they hail from Sweden (Västerås), rather than Germany.

The band maintain the high standard set down by the opener throughout the duration of the album, with the mid-paced groove/flat out aggressive drive of “Debt Of Sorrow,” the riffing extravaganza of “Portrait Of A Phobia,” the rather short, but memorable instrumental piece “Crossing the River” and the length epic-like closer “Where Only Ruins Remain” the definitive stand out cuts from the remainder of the album.

I guess there’s not a real lot to say about Inevitable Decay. Entrench don’t really add much to the old school thrash sound in the way of progressive elements or structuring their songs in a way that presents the thrash sound in a completely new frame. But what the band lack in change and innovation, they more than make up for in terms of writing catchy riff structures, and including vocals that have just the amount of rasp and bite to complement their old school approach to the classic thrash sound.

If there’s one small negative about Inevitable Decay, it’s probably the production. Much like early thrash classics, the production here is a little on the tinny side of things, and the bass is virtually unnoticeable for the most part. But when you weigh it all up, Entrench manage to get a whole lot more right than wrong on Inevitable Decay, and that’s enough to get a positive review from this scribe. There’s a whole host of acts attempting to jump on the thrash revival bandwagon these days, but when you sort out the acts into those who do it well, and cast aside the rest as mere imitators, Entrench easily slot into the former group.

SINCERA (Norway) Cursed and Proud DIGI CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Dennis van Dommelen

Sincera is a sideproject with members from Norwegian Death/ Black metal bands: Fester, Algol, Decipher and Psychotic Pain. Cursed and Proud is oddly divided into two parts. The first four songs are studio recordings the the following four are live recordings and the last one is a enterance song for the infamous Norwegian wrestler Byron Lawless. The Norwegians are quite technical, rich in harmony and texture. There are quite a lot of rhythm-changes but it's mainly well-composed and purposeful. The melodies are folky in places, thrashy in others, occasionally on the Dissection side of things, but generally very good. Uff, I have to say that "Cursed and proud" material is very uneven - it's an album, which I have to divide into two parts – first one gathers great songs and riffing, with some truly memorable anthems such as (the opening riff on) “A Griever's Soul” (though the guitars are sounding a bit false throughout the song, while on the other half it has lower quality riffs and unnecessary weak ideas like in the song “Cursed” and simply looses the feeling and aggression. The live recordings are all a all more straightforward and in your face. And although the soundquality isn't as good as on the studiotracks I like them more. Hopefully they will follow the more agressive path in the future. For now this debut is a irregular but that doens't say it's bad.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) The System of Nature DIGI CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Dennis van Dommelen

The Gardnerz are a relativealy new band to the scene. “The System of Nature” is their debut album on the American label Abyss records. As time goes by, the quest for the unique in music exponentially grows in futility, and one question is asked: "maybe instead of looking for originality in music we should just appreciate those all they do is the same-old, yet do it awesomely? Or is it me, blabbering again, having absolutely no idea how to open this darn review?"
Anyway, The Gardnerz is just that kind of a band – just as the homophone suggests, "routine" would be the name of the game and an immediate association that rises in all things concerning the album in question – tempo and feel-wise, the premise "The System of Nature" mostly dwells in is a moderate, quasi-gracious and self-important stride (the almost-exclusive use of major scales significantly contributes to that "majestic" feel), with a cue emphasis on basic, melodic musical approach and rather rudimentary thematic resolutions with catchy hooks and harmonies to please your ear, but without grabbing your attention all too much really.
As far as the music goes, though, the most suitable way to describe is that it that the doomy death metal delivers. I'd like to deviate from the common procedure by addressing the sound and production of the album first, since it would be the first thing to captivate your attention upon hearing this album as well – not only it's highly crisp and clear, you'd be overwhelmed by the ferocity it comes at you from the very get go. Imagine having an enormous frying pan swung at your face, hitting it in several different places simultaneously as it lands – same goes with this album. That it says mastered at the legendary Unisound studio by Dan Swano will clearify this. So in the end The Garnerz aren't inventing the wheel again but do present an interesting various doom/death metal album.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Tyrants and Men DIGI CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Robin van Tilburg

'Tyrants and Men' was officially released in 2009, but now enjoys a re-release through Abyss Records, the new found label of the band from Alaska. Swedish Death Metal fans beware: you're probably going to like this. Thousand Year War combines all the best elements from this scene and created an album that you can purchase without a doubt. I've already read it in several other review but I think the same thing: this sounds very much like Amon Amarth. The band also gives their own twist to the music, but overall it sounds very familiar. Fans of Amon Amarth or Swedish Death Metal in general have another great band to listen to! At this moment, the band is working on a new E.P. so we will probably will hear from them soon.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) Inevitable Decay CD review by http://pestwebzine.ucoz.com

Image

By Adrian

A new addition in Abyss Records' roster Entrench descends from Sweden and propose us their '80's-like Thrash Metal based on killer guitar solos and leads, fast to Speed-like rhythms and crazy good vocals. This album / band won't bring us anything new, but for sure their music is worth checking out if you're an old-school follower, there are so many catchy tunes on this album that I can't stop thinking what would have happened if this would have been released 25 years ago, I guess the Would would have gone nuts for Entrench. If you buy this album please keep in mind you'll have to enjoy not only the Thrash Metal from the '80's, but the sound from those years as well as there's nothing fancy or polished on "Inevitable Decay", old-school to the bone. Strongly recommended!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) The System of Nature DIGI CD review by http://www.teethofthedivine.com

Image

By E. Thomas

Listen, I’ll readily admit to being one of those shallow, close minded types that judges a book by its cover, or a band by its moniker. And quite frankly a band with the name The Gardenerz wasn’t something I was ready to dive into. It’s the same reason I’ve never listened to Weekend Nachos and only recently discovered Lemming Project. However, as is customary in this business, the start of 2012 sees me revisiting late 2011 releases that impressed me, and despite the name, Sweden’s The Gardenerz have released a pretty interesting debut of doom/death metal.
My initial, gut reaction comparison was mid-era Paradise Lost (Shades of God, Icon, Draconian Times), except The Gardenerz have traditional death/doom growls. The guitar work of Wilhelm Lindh has the somber, but melodic, rending hues akin to Gregor Mackintosh’s work as Paradise Lost transitioned from doom/death to more gothic tones. But with the vocals of Niclas Ankarbranth being far more extreme, The Gardenerz, even with a few more introspective moments, are a much more heavy hitting doom/death act.
Even though the band moniker doesn’t scream death/doom, (unless I’m missing something), the song titles are a little more indicative of the genre as the likes of “The Art of Suffering”, “Your Final Solution”, “The Lady in the Grave” and “Maybe its Time” display, even though the songs never delve into 8-10 minute dirges. Each of the songs are between 4-6 minutes and typically get right to it with plodding riffs, the occasional more up tempo rumble and lots of layers of melancholy, though not completely despondent tones. The Gardenerz aren’t going to open your wrists with dirges of woe or crush you with riffs, and that might be the only slight drawback to The System of Nature. It’s that it never fully commits to either doom or death and with a few injections of acoustics, the band’s overall direction is a bit indecisive. The somber doom element, when done is indeed solid, as heard on “Born to Consume”, the start of “Incident” or elegantly doomy start of “Flaw in the Axiom”, but the band’s slightly herky jerky shifts to more up-beat, almost jazzy or prog moments (“Shift in Thought”, “Confusion”), breaks some of the fluidity of the album.
But on the whole, the album is pretty well done.
The only other slight negative is the slightly tinny production which lessens the impact of some of the more rending, loping moments. It’s a production more suited to power metal or heavy metal, but it certainly gives The Gardenerz a bit of character, which, when mixed with two covers (Vulcano‘s “Bloody Vengeance” and Winter‘s “Servants of the Warsmen”) show The Gardenerz to indeed be more than a run of the mill doom/death band.

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.metal-army.com

Image

By MetalGeorge

Wow, now this is a nice little blast from the death metal past, now innit?
Actually, Norway’s Fester strode that weird, early 90s line between death and black metal; back when these two terms weren’t really mutually exclusive.
While Winter of Sin hasn’t exactly aged all that well compared to some of Fester’s Norwegian contemporaries, the album definitely sounded ahead of its time way back in 1992; a haunting and vicious sound which scared some, but intrigued most fans. This was because many were getting sick of death metal’s slow descent into trailer parks and jogging pants; bands like Fester, Mayhem, Emperor and Darkthrone were taking early death rumblings and providing their own, morbidly unique takes on a then-spent genre.
Fester and the lot inserted a lot more old metal feeling-a la Celtic Frost, Hellhammer and Bathory-into the mix, and as such were greeted as a fresh voice for the genre. While Winter of Sin may trudge along now for some-yours truly included, I’ll admit-the album must be taken in context to truly be enjoyed.
Abyss seems to know this, and have justifiably re-released this musty relic-No Fashion Records’ first release, for you fellow greybeards out there-for public consumption once again, delivering a history lesson to those who think death and black metal have always been about blastbeats ‘n breakdowns. No, Fester keep it slow, morose and musically mangled all the way through, and provide a harsh, strangled voice of blasphemy; one which hearkens back to the oldest of the old school.

HUMANGLED (Italy) Fractal DIGI CD review by symbyonte via metal-archives

Image

By symbyonte

Fractal marks the first full-length release from the Italian death metal act Humangled. While this album is far from anything all too original or jaw dropping, the music found on this release is instead just a great example of traditional death metal that is simple in nature, but executed quite well. Much of Fractal is designed to come off as rather simple. The guitars and drums presented here are just your typical hard hitting death metal-style music that doesn't really try to bring in some kind of combination from other genres to try to make some kind of impact. Instead, what you get is a solid performance that incorporates all of what makes death metal so great. Each song on here is essentially the same as far as the impact of the material goes. The guitars show some diversity throughout, but mostly try to stick to the sound that the song starts with and maintaining a standard chugging pace, changing up where applicable, such as during the chorus, solo, and specific bridges, helping to keep the album from getting too repetitive. However, the real drive of the album's musical direction seems to lie in the drumming, which is just constantly coming at you, and with exception to some slower moments that hit in the music, such as the case of "From Empty Pockets" near the middle of the song where it just slows down to a crawl for a few moments. This song is also the first one that you can really pinpoint the bass guitars easily, adding an additional layer to the music due to how important a role it has in progressing the music at certain moments, as well as actually having the guts to incorporate some cowbell. The additional cowbell, however, doesn't really do much outside of just being there near the end of the song. Of course, the vocal performance on the album is pretty standard as well. The style is a typical mix up of a higher pitched guttural that can grow into a more raspier style when additional force is presented in the music, or just near a specific moment of the song, most notably the end.

There's nothing really all that necessary to be pointed out with this album, as each track does have its own unique sound, but manages to flow nicely between one another. "Fruits of Abdomen" puts on an intense performance for the listener and even incorporates two effects thrown into the background just for kicks, though it doesn't really do much for the song outside of sounding cool, which is the case with the cowbell on "Infinitesimal" as already stated. "Liquidfire", however, is a pretty strong song that shines through due to the composition of the song and its similarities to some bands such as Obituary thanks to its more bouncy (but far from upbeat) chorus that will have your head banging throughout, as well as including some clean spoken words near the end of the song that are only harmonized by the fact that they are wailing in the background, which does aid the vocalist a bit, but ultimately is just something else the feels tacked on, though it doesn't hurt having them put there in the end. Out of these songs, as well as the rest of the album, "Fruits of Abdomen" really comes off as the fastest track as practically everything else on Fractal comes at the listener at a steady mid-pace with various moments of speed thrown in throughout certain tracks.

While the drums can often really push a song forward here, there are some tracks that really have some catchy guitars that are clearly meant to be the reason the song continues on the path it does. "Under the Root" is the perfect example of this thanks to the guitars being played here are clearly a little different compared to some of the tracks, actually having a slightly melodic Heavy Metal feel to the leads throughout it, but especially during the chorus of the song. The problem with this song, however, is that the guitars are a little louder then they probably should be and can sometimes feel like they are a bit too much, and the guitar solo is actually quite weak and sounds like the notes being played were done drunk, but not sloppy to the point where they come in too late and are noticeable. It's mostly due to the chords being played and how they quite contradict with the music being played behind it. "Reversed Humans" is really the only song on this release that actually is not all that great. The song moves at a much slower pace then most, and incorporates a bit of mid-career Carcass into the mix, but seems to not quite have as much structure as winds up being a bit off the wall throughout and has inspirations from other bands thrown in with their sound that just collides with the listener in many ways. The track is still worth a listen, but after a few spins through, the song just won't last, and ultimately just sounds out of place with the rest of the release.

Without incorporating any gimmicks, Humangled put together a fantastic straight forward death metal album that will appeal to all ages and degrees of the metal spectrum. Fractal winds up being a very impressive "every day" death metal album that doesn't manage to become monotonous or repetitive in any way, with only the closing song really causing a loss among listeners due to it's conflicting sound with the rest of the album, and how much is going on musically that will leave listeners trying to figure out exactly what is going on. Tag this issue atop some effects and ideas that simply did not need to be used, such as wailing and background effects and a guitar solo that feels like it was performed either while drunk, or by an amateur, and you're still looking at a highly impressive album that is worth checking out the next time you have a chance and shows that Humangled is a band to keep your eye on.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.welovemetal.com

Image

By Martell

With the massive number of submission we get you would be very surprised that most of them are the same in how they present themselves. They normally start with:
“We were formed… blah, blah, blah. We have a sound unlike anything you have ever heard before. We feel we are a good fit blah, blah, blah.”
Those submissions don’t piss me off or anything it just becomes difficult to tell one from the other. When Bodyfarm’s management company sent over their information the bio from the band stated, “were not especially technical or innovative, we just play death metal the way we feel it should sound.” That to me was very refreshing and I praise them for being honest and true to their convictions. The only possible issue with being completely open about that fact is: If you’re going to claim to play death metal the way it should sound with no innovation you had better be damn good at it.
The only way to find that out is to get into the music. Bodyfarm’s self-titled EP was in front of me and off I went.
“Into Battle” is a short instrumental opening that instantly created the image of marching into battle over barren fields very early in the morning. In only 1:29 the song manages to create a slow build to urgency where I pictured everyone in the battalion seeing the enemy straight ahead and realizing what was about to happen.
We move right into the bands namesake “Bodyfarm.” This track isn’t steeped in the imagery of “Into Battle,” but shows us the first sign that this is indeed true death metal: an unrelenting growl. For someone such as myself that came late to death metal this pacing and classic feel is what I missed out on years ago. The guitar solo at the end is something that needs to be shared with the world.
“Final Redemption” is summed up fairly easily. The vocals shine on this song and I had a very hard time taking notes each time I listened because it just kept pulling me in. This track is very well done and shows some superior talent at recreating the past in a modern setting.
The next song I best described as working man’s death metal. “Heartraped” is nothing fancy; just in your face aggressive death metal. The song has a definite thrash feel to it and has a ton of pace changes that broke up any monotony in the vocals. We live in an age where a lot of Metalcore bands claim to be death metal and at times it can be tricky to tell them apart. “Heartraped” is a great song to have in your back pocket to argue what true death metal is.
The final track “Slaves of War” has a massive thrash influence that will leave you head banging and not realize you’re doing it. The rhythm is incredible and the vocals over top of it just assault your senses. There is a multitude of time signatures and the end becomes one major jamming spot. I have to mention the bass work as well. This was a great ending to a wonderful EP.
Bodyfarm claimed to be nothing fancy or innovative. In reality relying on the past and showing deep respect by playing it well is innovative in this day and age. Bodyfarm’s EP is something I will continue to play long after this review is done.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Tyrants and Men DIGI CD review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

(Abyss Records) Hiram Lohr, voice and guitar, is in charge of this project since 2008. Thousand Year War is really a project, as Lohr comes from Alaska and has recorded the first demo them and subsequently involved the drummer Fredrik Widigs (Angrepp, Desultor, The Ugly) which he recorded in Europe. All this work and shave, even at a distance, it lasted a long time and in fact the final mix took place in 2009. "Tyrants and Men" is a melodic death metal in the style of Amon Amarth and In Flames, but the pieces are highly engaging, well played and written. The Thousand Year War in a play already known and are packed in sound from the death / thrash metal Swedish, but the quality is not negligible. Hiram Lohr does not hide, he exhibited his influences and not least their ability, the result is an album interesting.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) Rot.In.Pieces Demo review by http://www.minacious.org

Image

By Mordant

This is the first and thus far only release from this Swedish Death Metal band, and it got them signed to Abyss Records, who will release their debut album, and possibly re-release this demo officially. And when listening to this demo I get why they where signed so quickly. This is high quality old school Death Metal. Despite being from Sweden, their brand of Death Metal feels like it's much more inspired by Autopsy, then say Entombed or Dismember. The music is minimalistic, raw, filthy and fucking ugly, just like Autopsy, though there are some Swedish Death Metal influences in the music. Great demo, I can't wait to get their full-length album.

MAAX (U.S.) Six Pack Witchcraft DIGI CD EP review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Maax are a band from Indiana that has been reviewed previously that started out as straight forward black metal but has evolved into a black/thrash metal band with this e.p and this is a review of their release "Six Pack Witchcraft" which was released by Abyss Records during the year of 2010.

Drums are mostly fast with some blast beats being thrown in at times, while the bas playing has the classic thrash meets NWOBHM feel with somewhat of a hardcore punk attitude.

Rhythm guitars are mostly first wave of black metal mixed in with thrash style riffing, while the lead guitars are primitive 80's extreme metal guitar type of solos.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some thrash style gang back up vocals, while the lyrics cover drinking, Luciferian, and some hateful themes with a party attitude, as for the production it is very raw and primal and it gives the music the black metal edge even though this release is more black 'n' roll.

In my opinion this is a little bit better than the last album and I feel this style fits them alot better, hardcore black metal fans might be dissapointed, but fans of beer drinking black/thrash should enjoy this e.p. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Go Fuck Yourself" and "Six Pack Witchcraft". RECOMMENDED BUY.

ANGREPP (Sweden) Warfare DIGI CD review by autothrall

I don't need no corpse paint to know how to rock

Sweden has long exceeded its quota of producing great bands, but I don't think anyone had the guts to pass Angrepp the memo, so here they arrive with a debut album of flak-jacket, artillery gunning black metal with a huge debt to the classic, barbaric thrash of bands like Hellhammer and Bathory. Similar to Horned Almighty's latest album Contaminating the Divine (which is excellent), this is a band who know exactly how to rock, and they prove that the ability to write fairly simple riffs with a punk attitude has not yet been over saturated, since I found the majority of the material here to be both engaging and entertaining, great for a night out with your friends: that is, if your friends wear spiked armbands and chain-smoke the joints and bones of angels.

But what makes Warfare slightly more impressive than the average shakedown are the brief segues into more eerie riffing territory, somewhat reminiscent of how, on their past 4-5 albums, Norway's Satyricon have manifested their style. Songs like "Dead and Destroyed" and "Firebrand" excel in this area, the former with some huge rocking rhythms that pan out in morbid grooves and excellent leada work; the latter exploding into a grim melodic black rhythm past the half-way mark. "Rape, Kill, Rock n Roll" also segues into this interesting bridge in which a chug rhythm plays alongside some writing doom notes, then erupting into a modern Satyricon styled power groove.

If you've not had enough of that rock style in your black metal, this album's a very pleasant surprise, sure to win all the margin walking fans of black and punk or black/thrash, provided they have no gripes with a cleaner tone, because Warfare is pretty pro sounding, eschewing most of the filth and chagrin of many similar bands, and recorded by Dan Swanö. Almost all of the songs rock, especially those above and the hammer title track, the punk explosion of "Legions Arise", the stoppy breakdown to "Dictator" or the rampant thrashing black that is "For Now I Have Risen".

The riff writing is not complex, but Angrepp requires no overkill or exhibition of their individual instrumental proficiency to impress the listener, because they rock like a bomber over an infantry theater, unchallenged and reigning death and fire upon the grunts below. Very likely to impress fans of thrash, grind and hardcore in addition to the more punk-inspired black metal, so this is one young act that should very well see their star rising before long.

Rating: 80%
