DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.bleeding4metal.de

Image

By Akhanarit

DEAD AWAKEN offer on their debut album pretty neat old school Death Metal and pull through these boots without ceasing. Fans of the nineties-year death lead are well advised to "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red". Assuming they like a slightly bumpy sound and deep, monotonous growls. Who can get involved in this combination is DEAD AWAKEN have its dark delight. Besides fat blast parts, the pace is reduced again, making "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" to a quite varied affair. Songs like 'Carnivore', 'Mudhell' or 'State Of Corrosion' have become genuine pearls that genre fans will go down as the oft-quoted oil. Unfortunately quite slurred sound is for me the only shortcoming with this bloody piece Elchtod, but the poaching not only in Swedish climes, but also an audible pinch of U.S. death metal houses. For the band name I even had to smile, he recalls but me. immediately to the catchiest song on "The Bleeding" (CANNIBAL CORPSE) Finally, I should but still allows a stupid question: How the hell you please to get on a song title like 'Deutsches Afrika Corpse'? No matter what the guys smoking ... I also want to taste what it. Then it is on my review for the next album "Horny Sweden Death Metal band". Hell yeah!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.legacy.de

Image

By Alexander Renner

The readership here has to do with an album a Swedish band that plays death metal typical of the country. Although ... really to Sweden this disc does not sound as elements are used, which are more in the direction of the American Death Metal. The opener 'Carnivore' also makes immediately clear. In addition to a angesiedeltem rather in the middle of tempo is partly grinded. The actual title song shines again with this mix of medium-fast pace and frenzy. With 'Deutsches Afrika Corpse' is also represented a German song title. This is made abundantly clear what the lyrics of the guys turn, that any kind of war. Here, the guitars sound best to Sweden, although the somewhat progressive rhythm can already think almost Suffocation. The singer is here, as on all the songs pretty deep and reminiscent of Glen Benton and Immolation. The Deicide mentioned were perhaps at the next 'Rocket Symphony' godfather, because this throttled pace reminiscent of the slow tracks. When 'Mudhell' reigns again the merciless Death Metal hammer. Through the pounding groove is less catchy developed. Calls the end of the march even colleagues from Hail Of Bullets on the plan., Which is probably due to the war theme. With 'Manic Destructive' comes back to the grind for use, and also a small guitar solo is heard. 'Envy The Dead' goes through his staccato chorus sung quite well in the ear. Overall, the Swedes have here delivered a pretty good album, which should certainly give so many Death Metal Maniac joy. Only criticism is the somewhat anemic drum sound, but that should not detract from the listening experience do.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.teethofthedivine.com

Image

By E. Thomas

While bands like Entombed, The Generals, Calmsite, Six Feet Under and others are sometimes classified as “death ‘n’ roll”, the truth is it’s just death metal with a little groove and some catchy hooks. However, Finland’s Rocking Corpses are here to truly deliver death ‘n’ roll, and a weird but strangely enjoyable sound it is.

Basically, take the simple, catchy riff-driven rock a la AC/DC and The Zodiac Mindwarp, and then throw in some deep Chris Barnes -ish death metal vocals along with some traditional Danzig-y clean vocals (sometimes together, sometimes separate), all wrapped in Zombie/horror themes and there you have it - real Death ‘n’ Roll.

It is, as you’d expect, an odd mix, and it takes some getting used to, but I have to admit- there are some catchy little tunes contained on the aptly titled Rock ‘n’ Rott. The guitars are nice and beefy and the death vocals are plenty deep, even if the clean vocals are a bit off for me. But some of the songs themselves deliver as a whole. After the intro, the first track “Up From The Grave” is pretty much all you need to hear to determine if the rest of the album is worth your ear.

That formula is pretty much adhered to throughout the album; bluesy rock riffs, deep death growls and a clean croon-y chorus. Admittedly, it gets a bit old after awhile, and some of the riffs lose their catchiness. But if you are looking for a mindless, catchy style of metal to play with your windows open and still be a metalhead, you could do worse than “Necropolis,” super groovy “Take a Whiskey,” “Life for a Life,” the rollicking title track, “Necrophiliacs”, the more uptempo closer “Dead End” (where the clean vocals take a turn into Lemmy territory) and even goofy “925? (the verse sounds like a zombie grunting incoherently in the background comically). And Rock ‘n’ Rott is still a far better option than Six Feet Under‘s take on Back In Black and even though at times it’s just laughable and silly (i.e “In the Dead of the Night”), and feels a bit like a joke or gimmick band, I could not help myself from tapping my foot to any of the tunes.

Oh and don’t bother looking for this band at metal-archives/Encyclopedia Metallum – they aren’t deemed ‘metal’ enough to be there.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

I never got the whole death’n’roll thing from a couple of years back. I tried liking it but for most of the times it left me totally unmoved. I’m not saying that Rocking Corpse are death’n’roll but whenever I see the word rock in a band’s name I get flashbacks to that overly hyped style of music that I mentioned earlier. And with a title like “Rock’N’Rott” there are chances that this will be some sort of let down. Are perhaps this is just some sort of Finnish joke. I gotta say that I’m not too well versed in Finnish humour. And it was just what I thought it would be. This is rock tinged but not in that death’n’roll crap. This isn’t too bad. There is a charm to this that puts a smile on my face. This is borderline rock/metal with a darker edge. Perhaps not my first choice but it would work great as background music to a party. Again, not as bad as I had imagined.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by Dead Void Dreams

Image

By Paul Caravasi

ntensely influenced by Obituary in my opinion [c'mon, this is Allen West's project after all - ED] , 'Death's Crown' holds no less than 9 tracks of pounding death metal. The cover art, the lyrics reflect an obsession with serial killers and morbid stuff, an ideal topic for the underground culture and extreme music, musically the band borrows pieces of extreme genres, such as thrash and death, with a kick ass way to execute the instruments. Southwicked is essential for fans of Benediction, Obituary and Dismember. Get in touch with Clawhammer PR or Abyss Records to get a copy of this CD. Mandatory!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.vs-webzine.com

Image

By Sheb

In such international group is one who is strong. Skåne County native, is the area in the extreme south of Sweden, the Swedish quartet has a single, Niclas Ankarbranth, the singer whose musical background VANDÖD boils down to a black metal band who released an album in 2007. The other three members of THE GARDNERZ we all come from other countries and have participated in all of the groups in their respective countries. Francisco Martin, bassist Sometimes we SUD America, probably in Chile or Uruguay, where he participates or has participated in three other combos. Vedran Bencic the drummer happens to Croatia where he was part of a shadowy group SAVAGE HARMONY heavy author of two demos in the mid-2000s and UZIEL a thrash death whose discography is limited to a demo. The line-up was finally completed by Wilhelm Lindh is Swedish but is also part of TOXODETH, cult group death-black Mexican scene. Do not ask me how those four met in a band together, I don ' not have a clue. Still, in 2008 the group was founded and an album was born in 2011, released by the American label Abyss Records. The band is back (which was rather late 2012 as date of this CD a few months) with a maximum of six titles for 35 minutes of music, what would be considered sufficient for any we flog as an album. The combo looks like a doom band but this description is really too simplistic to represent the music of four gardeners (those attending the garden, Athenian philosophical school created by Epicurus in IVth century BC). While there is no doubt that the music of THE GARDNERZ is mostly doom metal, melodic death must also be included in the table. With musicians from such backgrounds, do not of course expect a purely Swedish music all that Max has been mixed in Santiago, Chile. At the end we get a very original music but not especially successful, though heavy alternating rhythmic and melodic parts do well. The weak point of this cake probably lies in the song. If the parties purely death metal growls prove honest, it is quite different parts of the song especially clear where the singer tries to give the traditional doom to SOLITUDE Aeturnus. These are very ugly, sometimes sung and make no false emotion pass. To be honest it reminded me of their compatriots VOID MOON (especially on "A Horrible Disease") I recently told you about in these columns. The third track of this cake is a cover of "Transylvanian Hunger" of DARKTHRONE. If the title of this piece was not so well known and had not put a flea in his ear, I probably would not be recognized as it was here transfigured. In place of the original black metal, we are left with an acoustic ballad with female vocals. The result is surprising but very successful. An honest cake doom-death does not bring anything new, but that still leaves listen.

Rating: 6.5/10

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by Dead Void Dreams

Image

By Paul Caravasi

The underground devotees will appreciate this band, this isn't a mainstream friendly sound, rather than that this is a chaotic brutality that deserves a listen. Corrosive Carcass do not get old or repetitive, their sound is more along the lines of Swedish death metal, Carnage or Nihilist for example. This promising effort comes in attractive packaging, and has great production, well done artwork too. They have many characteristics that make them sound foreign, maybe the vocal aspect and the cool guitar riffs and solos. Strong vitality that transmit anger, among the death metal bands, these guys are among the upper class. Corrosive Carcass deserves some recognition. Fucking exceptional!

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.maelstromzine.com

Image

By Mladen Škot

Now this is what we call "good taste." Composition of Flesh feels like being thrown head first into the good old days of Swedish death metal, back when Dismember, Edge of Sanity and Entombed were ruling the scene. Riffs flying all over the place, a few melodies and grooves thrown in for good measure, a hurtful guitar sound, painfully hissing cymbals and the trademark meaty bass guitar sound are stitched together by a drum sound from another era.

Corrosive Carcass are sparing no one. Including themselves. There's some forty-two minutes of fury, and after about half of it you'll already be exhausted and wondering what the hell happened to the rest of Sweden. The standard lyrical content still isn't deprived of a few inspired touches, which could roughly be said about the music too. But when you count in the sound, the feeling and the energy, Corrosive Carcass are well above most bands of their kind. We had some hopes after having reviewed their demo but half-expected the rawness to disappear on a full-length album. Now that it is here, we are glad to report that Corrosive Carcass did the right thing.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by http://www.maelstromzine.com

Image

By Jerome Reuter

Like many other black metal bands of the early '90s, Fester has acquired somewhat of a cult following. Fester disbanded in 1993, and reunited in 2010. WInter of Sin is their 1992 album, re-issued.

On the whole, this a fairly decent album, Stripped down, raw and primal like most black metal should be. But there are several instances where songs fall short, and things feel unfinished and put together rather hastily. For the most part, the general pace of the album marches at mid tempo, with lots of slow, evil riffs, and screams that convey an overall atmosphere of desolation and agony.

However, some of the time changes seem forced, almost as if the riffs were thrown together and not arranged properly. While shades of Bethlehem are welcomingly apparent, I can't shake the feeling there's something missing on most of these songs.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by Aristocrazia Webzine

Image

By Mourning

Death metal and rock together? I would say that is not new, Carcass were the precursors to many, those who do not remember the fierce criticism of "Swansong" and then revalued by many experiments in this field made ??by the Swedish genius Dan Sweyn in the work of Edge Of Sanity? How to define if not rock songs like "Black Tears" and "Losing My Self"? But only two are probably among the most striking and well-known cases you can consider.
Today I find myself in his hands "Rock'N'Rott", the debut CD of the Finnish Rocking Corpses, classic formation of three who sees Tony DK deal growl in the voice and guitar lines, Leper Laze of clean vocals and bass and Vile provide rhythm and grit behind the drums, but apparently it was not yet a member of the band at the time of, oversaw the graphics but the battery is played by D.K.
The album than on the holy trinity "sex, drugs and rock'n'roll" points out that "sex, death and rock'n'roll", the tracklist is a ploy interesting be included in a lull, maybe after you've made ??the big hammered with a series of productions ultramarce or hyper-fast. It's a middle ground that allow the lover of death metal not to abandon the world of nightmares, physical and moral decay in which likes to splash around, opening, however, even in part, the doors to the charm of rock. How can you not enjoy a "Dead End" which Lemmy would be proud of or listen to the introduction of "Up From The Grave" and think with a smile "WTF? Looks like it or not a lot 'to" Personal Jesus " Depeche Mode? " That feeling lasts for the whole song flowing and will win for its immediacy, thanks to a nice clean chorus.
impact The same applies to sudden and winking "For Better For Worse" which combines a fair amount of decision a catchy appeal that becomes even radio in cantabilissima "925" then add a "Necrophiliacs" who does a little 'verse to Danzig, well equipped with some blues groove, a little' Black Sabbath scattered here and there and "Rock 'N'Rott "depicts in full what it really is: a distraction, played, performed and lived to release and relieve the listener. Good music unpretentious, very good thing.
Let's face it, death is very little here and rock very much, the balance shifts decisively on this side in most circumstances, it is a bad thing? No, it is a fusion of two styles that when connected in an alcoholic and enjoyable performance that can show off your stereo accepts willingly and that of Rocking Corpses is one of them.
Are you willing and open enough to listen sollazzarvi with similar? If the answer is yes, turn on the system, shoot the volume to astronomical levels and take a beautiful blonde or rather two, you never know, they fly away as fast as spending time in the company of these Finnish wild.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.truemetal.it

Image

By Valentina "Mastra" Rappazzo

Advertising that a bit 'all know the Swedes said that like a lot of things: sleep with friends, drinking with friends, but mostly chewing gum mint. There's been said that, among the ranks of the many groups that Sweden has given us, were hidden Corrosive Carcass , valuable quintet Hofors / Storvik, we have a working old-school death-watering. "Composition Of Flesh" (Abyss Records) is their first full work and d ' onset, preceded by a demo, "Rot.In.Piece" of 2010. Gender is the very widespread use of the death, of which the Corrosive Carcass incorporate all the details very accurately, not to mention details. This research exemplary incarnation of the swedish death gore a bit 'with the whole style of the album, from the cover to the track listing see echoes of corroded and rotting flesh. The first listening to "Composition Of Flesh" is enlightening, and the first track, "The Flash Is Not enought" leaves a foretaste of a job that does not do anything to remain disappointed over forty minutes tightened beautiful, thirteen tracks in total, the air of death and decay that invests early runs through the 'album, as a presence that never leaves us alone while listening. It is an old-school their work, and perhaps here is inherent be the advantage, both the fault of this album: flaw is perhaps a bit 'of inventiveness. Definitely very compact as a disk, it does not leave room for different interpretations or changes of direction. The work of the two guitarists, Kanto and Lindorf, is work to full-scale butchers: the blows of the ax feel good, the riffs are chaotic, distortion is well-dosed but very buzzy. influence of bands like Entombed countrymen is undeniable, but in some places this work recalls the early Dying Fetus and Cannibal Corpse (see the multi -cited "Born In A Casket"). Janis on drums pounding with a blast-beats as a laborer, and it is here that perhaps you will hear some echo in the work of Our thrash. The same thing happens with the item Sjöblom, who gave us a violent performance, rough and sharp: a real work from rusty chainsaw. His growl, sometimes slightly scratchy, however, is well-calibrated. The band does not lose control of her child even for a minute, nothing is left to chance. Where the technique does not seem to be there instead: understated, not super exploited, it acts instead as background to all of their work, but unfortunately lacks, as already mentioned, of ideas. In the death scene groups such as Corrosive Carcass start to show up more and more often to the delight of lovers of the genre. In the opinion of this writer can never have enough, especially if there are works like this: good quality, so much wickedness. has been told not too technical, but a lot of bad, very direct: the Corrosive Carcass are more like a nuclear disaster that a perfectly balanced chemical equation. Absolutely disrupt the environment in which they explode, leaving behind them destruction and death. But we like so: raw and deadly, and who knows if they love chewing gum.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by Pest Webzine

Image

By Adrian

You would expect such a band popping out of the USA, but this is actually a Finnish band that combines the happy side of Hard Rock with Death Metal. Labelling them Death'n'Roll is a bit too much as they are not that groovy sounding like Debauchery or Six Feet Under for example, they are really constructing their tracks on 100% Hard Rock structures, the Death Metal elements being just an influence, a spice over this already cooked music. I have serious doubts die-hard Death Metal fans will enjoy this, but if you can stand bands like Guns'n'Roses, Black Sabbath, The Offspring and such, you might enjoy this strange combination, too. There are some songs that really made this combination an entertaining one, but there are others that are simply boring, too. Don't expect a violent, brutal release as the cover artwork is, you'll get an experiment of old-school styles that 20 years ago were amongst the biggest foes: shiny, Stoner influenced hard Rock and Horror themed creepy Death Metal (this shows on vocals only though). As said earlier some tracks are really enjoyable, some are only worth skipping. They have the skills, they can do better next time.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by Pest Webzine

Image

By Adrian

Followup to their 2010 album "Fractal" and I guess preview of their upcoming album "Odd Ethics" present us 4 tracks totaling 15 minutes of Death Metal, odd Death Metal that is. I find these Italians' Death Metal to be pretty strange and quite original, it doesn't follow any particular path, but it's at the same time brutal, groovy and quite progressive. It is not some groundbreaking discovery that will dominate the world right away, but it's interesting how these guys manage to combine traditional Death Metal riffs with unconventional rhythms ranging from slow to mid-tempo. The album doesn't flow easily, but I see it like raging sea waters. After spinning this disc for a few times I'm still not convinced if I like it or not, but one thing is certain, this is definitely not typical Death Metal. Try it for something new!

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by http://www.draugiem.lv

Image

By Dethecrator

Evaluating this year's Latvian metalražu, one of the main candidates for the patrons of metal on at least one of the prize categories will diseas debut album "Holy Wrath", which was probably boasts the most distant printing site - American Publishers' Abyss Records. "

Even before his debut CD came out dise was a well-known item of Latvian stages, as well as all of the songs heard in concerts, so interesting to listen to Imants Vovers (drums), Dmitry Bulavskis (guitar), Alex Makarov (bass) and Sergey Stavro (vocals) turned his eight bulk composition of the single studies. The first line of lyric can be a bit atsedinat experienced listeners: "There's a turning of the back / World is turning black!" - Either that begins with the banality album? However, the energy that comes from the same instrumentalists and singer instantly makes the following a strong start to the songs! mood of the album's title track and listening to the songs on "Sinner", "Insanity", "Son of the Winter" - and it is through the "Witch" to "Agony", it becomes clear why dise music is so hard to be characterized. On the one hand - in terms of severity, it is the old, right mironmetals, on the other hand - the music is slow flowing and changing, so there are many shebang ("sludge") elements, while the rhythm section in d-beat pieces. The band members themselves about their categorization shrugs - Pjotr ??they have little interest in it, but adds that it took them some time until the match for Publishing: The above few wished to dise playing "clean" mironmetalu, while others - the most typical 'sludge , "and the like. album cover motif of the Mexican artist Gragoth driven 21st December theme: crimson fire bullets pouring over cracked earth dedzinadamas and black smoke kupinadamas. The visual motif in tune with IN FLAMES song "Come Clarity" video, which featured the same fireball flying across the desert standing Swedes heads. However dise album cover is not a paraphrase on the visual side, but thought up - "Holy Wrath" cover shows what happens when the Heavenly Punishment ™ has completed the flap through the air and above the land. Karametala.lv observers it looked like a write-off satellite overturning, falling Vovers answered - Freedom of thought to each listener's own appraisal!

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by Dead Void Dreams

Image

By Paul Caravasi

Fast and creative sound, the songs on this CD are massive. Brutality at its best, unending assault of metal, the artwork looks like a horror movie poster, and this is well reflective of the lyrical content for the most part. The album contains insane songs, the vocals are low growls mixed with madness, we have all out avalanche grind beats, and moshing riffs. Again, the lyrics are demented, violent and assaulting. Radiation Sickness is like a more brutal version of Carcass [eehh, mate, really? -ED]. 'Reflections Of A Psychotic Past' is sure to please any metal fan. Definitely among the best releases I've gotten all year. Do check this out! [The CD also features a re-mastered version of the band's debut album from 1990, 'The Other Me' - ED]

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by Last Rites

Image

By Dave Pirtle

There’s nothing like mining the deepest parts of the "Lord of the Rings" universe to come up with a band name. You never know what one will come up with or even how apt the chosen moniker will be. We have a band out here that calls themselves Helm’s Deep, but as far as I can tell their music has little to do with hobbits and such. On the other hand, Ireland’s Eternal Helcaraxe went with a rather fitting choice. Helcaraxe – and I didn’t know this before – is the icy waste between the lands of Aman and Middle-Earth. Based on that, you’d probably guess that they play a frostbitten brand of heathen/black metal. You would be right, and Against All Odds is a pretty impressive tome of blood-splattered tales from that frozen land.

I only mention their homeland as a point of information, as to my ear there isn’t anything uniquely Irish here. However, they do seem to share more than a few musical/creative elements with countrymen Primordial, most notably when it comes to their more melodic moments (including clean vocals). Overall their sound owes more to the Scandinavian lands of ice and snow, specifically bands like Istapp, Thyrfing, and maybe early Darkthrone that create a definitive atmosphere from an almost bare-bones approach.

The most interesting aspect of Against All Odds is the ever-shifting mood. One moment you’re getting torn to shreds by the ferocious “We Assist Death”; the next you’re being entertained by the bard’s tale “Invictus”. (Well, a brutal bard, anyway.) Somewhere in between lies “As the Snow Gathers,” which for all its chillingness, is also quite warm thanks to some sweeping keyboard lines. Then, just when you think you’ve heard it all, they drop an emotionally-wrenching epic on you in the form of the album-closing title track. In an extreme genre like this, it is rare to not only hear but feel that kind of pain in the music. I’m still not 100% if it involves a man mourning his dying love or a mighty warrior paying heed to his fallen brothers. Okay, so I’m pretty sure it’s the latter, but that just shows the power of the lyric and vocal.

So what is Eternal Helcaraxe’s place amidst the ranks of like-minded bands? Probably somewhere in the middle, but closer to the front than the rear. They’re not doing a lot to inspire awe and wonder – yet, for a debut album from a relatively young band, Against All Odds holds its own, and leaves one with promise that there are even better days ahead, and even more epic tales to be told.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by Dead Void Dreams

Image

By Paul Caravasi

Cool name for a band of this style. Violent down tune stone rock with death metal vocals, the entire CD is a unique blend of chaotic riffs and pure rock and roll in the most brutal and devastating way possible. Professional production, kick ass artwork and layout, I've never heard anything so artistic. This band brings inspiration to the underground scene. This is what it would sound like if Black Sabbath did death metal. Mercilessly infectious!

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by Black Data Music

Image

By Dainis Tamulevics

music itself seriousness. Dise to the elbows hit the dead and the Frailty and Soundarcade. From time to time it seems that now iegaudosies Nick Holmes, which suggests that this depression should be used in small doses. To me very much prefer it required a bit sharper sound and a little more jestruma, but it is a matter of taste, and do not indicate anything bad qualities of the group. The only thing that confused that they will never really have nothing to say, and even referred above is vague, "bla-bla". Not even to say than prikoliga unless attempt to accost drummer's beard (ha, well, yes, on new and promising them does not name). In other words, the sample that is sludge doom metal, and everything is clear, even with all that, I have a strong hunch that only approximate the sludge.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://transcendingobscurity.com

Image

By Kunal Choksi

The Gardnerz returns after a successful debut with a brilliant EP titled ‘It All Fades’. This band has taken the mid-90s era of Death/Doom Metal and turned it on its head with its improvisations and innovations. It’s no longer the one-dimensional Death/Doom Metal – here you have the genre-bending scope with unconventional riffing, myriad vocal patterns including offbeat and unexpected female vocals such as for the Darkthrone cover, which is of the acoustic type.

A self-conscious band wouldn’t dare do something like that, which is why they’ll never reach the acclaim this band would get. They’ll remain in the underground, being all too aware of their “kvlt” image and languish there without ever seeing the light of the day, so to speak. The Gardnerz is confident of its bold steps, venturing into territories few bands would dare. The way it has mixed crushing Death Metal riffing with charming ‘90s Doom and even Traditional Doom elements is laudable.

The songs are long without seeming so and hardly repetitive – which is what makes The Gardnerz special. It all seems like an ever-interesting and engrossing journey laden with surprises and drama, which this band revels in. I prefer when the band indulges in playing more subtle melodies than in-your-face Death Metal parts as they are more touching and effective in their expression.

Littered with nature pictures, the album is presented very well, especially the cover artwork made by Daniel Johnsson. The production is immaculate with the right heaviness and tone and the vocals are diverse giving the emphasis on the right feeling – the backing vocals by Paulina Strihavka on the title track are breathtaking. That and the album on a whole are highly memorable and the tunes repeat themselves in your head well after the CD stops spinning. A seamless integration of both the genres would see this band expand on its noteworthy sound masterminded by Wilhelm Lindh and as such ‘It All Fades’ is one of the best releases to come out from this genre in recent memory.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://www.metalwave.it

Image

By Carnival Creation

The The Gates of Slumber, Doom Metal trio of Indianapolis, in Italy might not say much but at least represent a reality in the United States arrived at the finish line of the fifth studio work for thirteen-year career from the very first demo 'Blood Encrusted Deth Axe' of the year 2000. After the EP 'Stormcrow' this year, they decided to publish an edition of our "expanded" their debut album 'The Awakening ...' in 2004 with new artwork, a slightly modified track-list and the 'inclusion of the bonus track "The Cloaked Figure" for a total duration is around this time that all'oretta poor instead of the previous three quarters of an hour.
A choice maybe a little 'too commercial but certainly some might think Karl Simon, Jason McCash and drummer Jason McCash (even if '... The Awakening' Chuck Brown sat behind the drums) have honored a career with something that could seriously affect fans of Doom Metal that never goes out of style too much from traditional norms sabbathiano, and how could the end? The tracks on the platter play dirty enough to be able to venture a little 'Stoner here and there but this is a personal thought, the Heavy Classic survives always faster even in episodes such as "The Executioner" but does not get too excited.
Not lives much stylistic research, in fact, so it is obvious that The Gates of Slumber are not interested in disrupting the Doom Metal or to contribute to its potential evolution, far from it: they do what they love to do. Point.
tracks, one of my personal taste, I have remained too closely tied to the long clichés a bit 'annoying and boring but the fact remains that the band knows how to play and rewards collected over the years will continue undeterred.
Recommended mainly to the fans.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.cosmosgaming.com

Image

By Chris Dahlberg

Where Hope Turns Dripping Red may be Dead Awaken’s debut full length album, but this Swedish death metal band are certainly not newcomers. Not only has the group been around and putting out demos since 2002 (though there have been a number of lineup changes in that time), but its current two member roster were also a part of Aboth which formed back in 1988 and remained active for a decade. With this level of experience, is the group able to make a strong impression on their debut?

The level of technicality and tightness that Dead Awaken possesses is notable right from the start, as the instrumentalists are able to remain perfectly in sync for the entire release. Sometimes death metal bands have a tendency to play faster than they can handle and the instrumentation comes off as sloppy, but here the performance remains extremely tight and the drummer in particular is able to handle the faster tempos with relative ease. Stylistically the group maintains an old-school sound, but they don’t seem to be pulling exclusively from one particular variant instead hopping between song structures that recall Swedish and American death metal. One of the things I like the most about Where Hope Turns Dripping Red would have to be the prominent bass lines, as this type of crunchier bottom heavy sound is one that I have always enjoyed in this genre. Admittedly there are still plenty of moments where Dead Awaken’s ideas sound fairly familiar, especially to seasoned veterans of this genre. But it’s performed well enough and has just enough variation to be worth checking out, and the old-school production play a significant role in why it’s sure to still hook fans of the style.

Jörgen Kristensen not only handles guitar and bass work on this album but also serves as the vocalist for Dead Awaken, and he has a low pitched growl that expands outward and fills the sound. The vocals have been mixed only slightly above the instrumentals, so rather than towering over the riffs there is a little less space between them. This approach seems to work in the group’s favor though, as Kristensen’s growls are enhanced by the wall of sound created by the instrumentals and pick up even more intensity as the songs progress. I tend to prefer this type of fuller, stretched out growl in my death metal and when combined with the war metal slant of the lyrical content it makes Where Hope Turns Dripping Red quite appealing.

I’ve listened to even more death metal this year than normal, and while Dead Awaken doesn’t quite stand out in my mind as a top contender they’re not that far off. This is old-school material done well, and it doesn’t quite fall specifically into the European or American sound like so many of the other groups out there. I do see myself returning to this disc on occasion thanks to the crunchy bass dominant sound and precision of the instrumentalists, but with a bit more growth this group could take their ideas even further.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) Interview by Black Metal Spirit

Image

By Fran Rocha Fernández

1. Hyperborean born in 2000, after a couple of demos, several lineup changes, a cessation of activity and start again, you publish in 2011 "The Spirit of Warfare". How did the idea of ??creating Hyperborean? How has the sound of the band over the years and how it has influenced changes in sound training? Sometime you software developers to dissolve the group?

I had done vocals in some bands previously and I had just moved to a new city to study. I had some contacts there and we decided to form a new band as I didn’t want to stop playing music at the time and it grew from there. It was kind of an interesting process because we never really discussed or decided what kind of genre of music we would play and we had very different musical backgrounds and influences and you can really hear that in our early demo recordings. Over the years the music has changed in many ways, it has progressively become harsher and more technical. We used to use lots of clean vocals and keyboards and over the years we have used less and less of them. Well the band has gone through many changes. I don’t really think there was a point where we (Andreas and I) wanted to end the band completely. It has been on hold for various periods but never dissolved.

2. How was the writing process for this "The Spirit of Warfare"? What is your way to work in the recording studio?

Hectic is probably the best word to describe the recording of The Spirit of Warfare. We did everything in the studio in just over one week, which really was pushing it. We should probably have taken a little more time to do it in in hindsight. Andreas had to record all the guitars and some of the bass in just a few short days. Now we have just finished recording a new album called Mythos of the Great Pestilence. We learned from the recording process of TSOW and did not do it the same way. This time we split up the recording so that Andreas could really take all the time he needed to record the guitars and bass and then I went to the Endarker studio, recorded the vocals, and then everything came together there. This method worked very well and we will probably keep working in this manner.

3. Your lyrics revolve around historical battles, what you find inspiration to write? What you want to convey to them?

Well the lyrics to The Spirit of Warfare dealt with battles and war but there will be very little of that sort of lyrics on the new album. That however does not mean that the lyrics from the last albums are disconnected from the ones on the new one. They are not. The driving theme, beneath the surface if you will, of TSOW was always the nature of humanity or the essence of mankind. And this theme continues to run through our new album in both explicit and implicit ways. I draw allot of inspiration from great thinkers such as Polybius, Machiavelli and Thomas Hobbes. And of course also historical events that have had a profound influence on humanity. On The Spirit of Warfare it was the first world war and on our upcoming album it is the Black Death, the plague that ravished Europe in the 14th Century. But the main inspirations would be human nature and the loss of virtue. There is a narrative that I want to convey through our lyrics, but it will take more albums to complete it and I don’t want to spoil it ahead of time, so until then enjoy them and take as much, or as little, as you will from them.

4. What equipment do you guys use in the study and which at concerts?

Well we don’t play live right now but the equipment Andreas uses is ibanez and ovation guitars, seymour duncan picups, ernie ball strings and jim dunlop picks. And I just use whatever mic the studio gives me. On our latest recording it was a Neumann tlm 103.

5. What inspired you initially create Hyperborean? Are they still valid today those reasons? What bands are your sources of inspiration?

That was such a long time ago, it’s hard to remember. I can’t speak for the others but personally I just wanted to play music at the time, there was nothing profound, no great thought that went into the creation of the band. We have a much clearer vision of what we want to do today and that includes a purpose to the message. As for inspirations, that is hard, I try to not consciously take too much ideas from other bands, although I´m sure I do to some extent anyway. But some Metal bands I currently enjoy listening to allot would be newer Marduk, Watain, Deathspell Omega and Ghost.

6. Who is designing the cover of "The Spirit of Warfare" what is your relationship to the content of the album?

Well the idea was that the rider was supposed to represent war, the first horseman of the apocalypse, but the interpretation of it was up to the artist and let’s just say it left us wanting… To be honest it turned out really bad, we are certainly not happy with it, but what is done is done, no use on dwelling on it other than to say we will not use that artist again.

7. I think that since 2003 you do not offer concerts, is situation will change in the future? What is the reason behind this decision?

I don’t know, never say never, if the right opportunities emerged we would consider getting a full line up together. The reasons we aren´t a full band now is basically that it is really fucking hard to keep a band together, there is allot of hard work that goes into it and it’s just a drag to deal with. The band works really well, as it is now, with me and Andreas. We have similar visions for the music and we get things done, we have a good system.

8. "The Spirit of Warfare", was published in 2011, I assume that you will be working on new material, if so; we can advance something about the new job?

As I have mentioned we have a new album recorded, I don’t know when it will be released yet, probably in the fall but we will post a couple of teaser tracks before then so keep a look out for them on our facebook page, (https://www.facebook.com/HyperboreanSwe) they will be posted in the near future . The album is called Mythos of the Great Pestilence and we are really happy with how it turned out. Compared to The Spirit of Warfare It really is better in every way. Better and more technical songs and better performances on all the instruments and vocally as well, and a much improved overall sound. We recorded it at Endarker studio with Magnus “Devo” Andersson of Marduk who engineered, mixed and mastered it. That was a really good experience; he really went out of his way to make sure it turned out good. So to any band who has the opportunity to work with him I can highly recommend you do so.

9. Thank you very much for your time, if you want to add something for people who like Hyperborean, this is the place, thanks. I hope the questions are to your liking.

Thank you for the interview and some good questions. All I can say is keep a look out for our upcoming album, it really is the best thing we have recorded. Thanks to our fans for supporting us.
Magnus/Hyperborean

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by totgehoert

Image

By Luke

The Doomer of THE GATES OF SLUMBER since 1998 already grooving through the metal of the viscous kind enough reason the debut "... The Awakening" the dominions republish, thought themselves as well the people behind Abyss Records.

This will please the diehard fans especially, but the original in the nineties was hard to buy. The nine songs on the silver disc rotating about an hour and a whisk in the heavy style of Doom, which sometimes leaves traces of dirt on the doormat and the current brand of triplets, no longer fully. This may be because the mastermind Karl Simon was still standing as the sole culprit behind the name THE GATES OF SLUMBER. Therefore, the sound is most likely to REVEREND BIZARRE , BLACK SABBATH , and possibly also with ELECTRIC WIZARD compare, even if last-mentioned sound much deeper out of the box, as is the case with this album.

What then, the band has already proven is that they simply have it a kind of doom metal to play the catchy simple and really should be a much larger institution in this area. There are no hard parts in which one is waiting for finally happened. Instead, you feel relaxed and grooves here and there through the songs faster than it would expect one or the other. Clear that there is no mosh pit atmosphere arises. But that would be completely out of place. Since it is so much nicer to sit back and let all act in a couple of beers on it. A song up during the creation of this review and was running down 'The Jury'. Let sink in. A perfect song to set the mood of the album, because it is backed only about one third are singing so well and to mitwippen invites on the deck chair.

Conclusion: Then as now, a great band. Who wants to get the nineties sound of the band home, just look over at Abyss Records. It's worth it! "... The Awakening" was originally published in 2004 Final Chapter Records.

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by http://christopherlatta.suite101.com

Image

By Christopher Latta

Maax's second studio album is a fun slice of old school black/thrash metal.

When the subject of black metal is discussed, there are specific stereotypes and tropes that are sure to come up just about every time. Even when looking past the various crimes that were committed by the genre’s more infamous adherents, one is likely to call forth images of corpse-painted faces and hypnotic song structures aided by lo-fi production.

Maax seems to be one exception to that rule as they have disregarded the modern standards and opt for a more primal approach. While this is their second studio album, it happens to be their third release overall as they previously put out the Dawnbringer full-length in 2009 and the Six Pack Witchcraft EP in 2010.

Storming the Gates of Metal Black

Several listeners have tried to place Maax somewhere on the line between blackened thrash and death ‘n’ roll (The more you think about it, the more you realize how ridiculous the names of metal subgenres are these days), but their overall sound doesn’t seem to be too far off from what Venom was pioneering in the early 80s. This influence is best demonstrated on “Do What Thou Wilt,” an upbeat anthem that feels like a modern version of the classic “Welcome To Hell.”

But while Cronos and his merry bunch may be the leading influence on this group, it’s not the only one to be found on here. One can find clear references to punk, thrash, black metal, and even some classic Motorhead here and there. Fortunately all of these elements work well with one another, reminding one of how most of them had their roots in a singular dirty force.

Speaking of dirty, this album is also made distinct by its production. In a way similar to “Six Pack Witchcraft,” the production is incredibly raw and helps give the album a very live feel that works in its favor. The band itself doesn’t sound as distant as it did on the EP, but there is still a great deal of chaos and intensity to work with.

Speaking of the band, they generally put on some good performances though there’s nothing particularly mind-blowing on display. The production aids the guitar playing and drums, making them both sound quite filthy throughout. In addition, the vocals are delivered in a raspy, mid-range bark that makes one wonder if they should be cleaner or harsher. Either way, they carry the songs well and show off a lot of energy.

God Dethroned, The Devil Waits Below

In terms of how the songs themselves play out, Unholy Rock & Roll is somewhere between the two releases that came out before it. While the songwriting is generally more elaborate than Six Pack Witchcraft and has lengths similar to Dawnbringer, the songs are mostly executed in a very direct, upbeat fashion.

In addition to the Venom worship on “Do What Thou Wilt,” “Rot ‘N’ Roll” and the title track are by far the strongest tracks that this release has to offer. Not only are the riffs catchy, but they also throw in some solid gang vocals during the choruses that do a lot to benefit the barroom atmosphere.

The opening tracks known as “Coldest Steel” and “Fight With Fire” are also worth noting for they show off a nice touch of early 80s thrash influence. While this does lead to the tracks having introductions that are respectively similar to Metallica’s “Hit the Lights” and Slayer’s “Angel Of Death,” they quickly become their own tracks with the latter featuring a particularly pounding hook.

Of course, there are a few outliers that move away from the album’s largely rock-oriented nature. The interestingly titled “Purge of Depravity 2: The Pentagram” is a two minute interlude meant to serve as a melodic break from the violence while “Overthrone” seems to take cues from the band’s purer black metal roots. They might not be the most immediate tracks on here but they are still pretty solid in their more dramatic nature.

We Pray To Nothing Yet Receive All

As any musician will tell you, it is a nearly impossible task to capture the energy of a band’s live sound onto an actual studio release. However, Maax does manage to come pretty damn close to achieving this feat though they may still have a bit more work in terms of their songwriting skill.

But for what it’s worth, this may be their most enjoyable album to date and one of the most fun releases that 2011 has to offer. This isn’t a deep album by any stretch of the imagination, but rather one that’s meant to be blared in hopes of pissing off your neighbors. And judging by the lack of complaints that I’ve gotten from mine, I either have really awesome neighbors or just need to make it louder…

Current Highlights:

“Fight With Fire”

“Unholy Rock & Roll”

“Do What Thou Wilt”

“Rot ‘N’ Roll”

"Black Thrash 'em All"

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by Death Grind Freak

Image

By Valis

As the opening track of “Composition of Flesh” rips through you like a bone machine grinding flesh into mortar paste your first reaction might be “ahhh more Swedish death metal.” But you’d be dead wrong. Corrosive Carcass obviously love their share of early Entombed and Dismember albums but ultimately their debut album is a rotting corpse filled cauldron of both old school Swedish AND U.S. death metal, particularly Autopsy and early Death. The songs are all well written, rhythmically diverse and catchy as hell, listen to “Butchershop” a few times and see if you’re not reciting the opening lyrics to yourself for days afterwards. Overall a great “old school” DM album that stands far above a large majority of the clones out there today. Buy a copy at Abyss Records.

SINCERA (Norway) "Cursed and Proud" DIGI CD review by http://www.metalpsalter.com

Image

By Chris

Sincera is a Norwegian export that combines some black metal elements with the rounded edges of thrash and/or death metal to offer Cursed and Proud, an album nine years in the making that seems to be worth the wait if you’re into this type of black thrash with an atmospheric slant. What we have here are four studio tracks, four live entries and one bonus song that attempt to assuage the jaded palate that is this writer’s current affect.

I tend to gravitate towards this style these days much more than I used to due to the oversaturation of silly black metal acts popping up in recent years. When “Tall and Proud” starts off I’m taken into the train of thought that this might turn into some rudimentary and atmospheric jaunt through more cold, blackened wastelands; it was along those lines, but it certainly wasn’t totally rudimentary by any means. The overall voraciousness often associated with the typical black/thrash offering is widely elusive here, which lends more credence to the music as a whole. As “Cursed” shatters the silent interim between tracks you feel a definitive Norwegian black aura throughout and it’s wholly digestible, if not completely original. The vocals are very Norwegian-black in style, and while this is so painfully typical it still manages to work itself into the psyche to a desired plateau. Again, I’m not sure the ardent statistician of black metal would find this too important or desirable, but for some out there who aren’t as particular or versed in such musical ventures it might be just what you’re looking for. Honestly, though, the “Byron Lawless” track could and should have been left on the floor as it really isn’t very interesting and goes nowhere in terms of the rest of the album. It’s a literal add-on that might have been requested to round out time and CD space, and in that case they should tell the label or producer to stick to his appointed duties and leave the track decisions to the band. This track of completely banal design does no service to the band

As for the live tracks, they aren’t exactly good quality, but the essence of the band certainly does come across in the tracks. While the music still might suffer from a production complex throughout, the thickness of the musical foray is quite impressive. I’d say this might even be a better experience for me if the venue’s soundboard had captured these live songs as opposed to what I can only ascertain is a bootleg recording the band acquired from either a fan or a personal attempt. Either way Sincera is decent for your splash of black/thrash/death that isn’t too concerned with reconstructing a mold that has since hardened beyond all recognition and good taste. In short, live is where these guys really shine a black light of hopelessness and despair.

Cursed and Proud defines, in some small way, the best of old-school thrash/traditional heavy metal and the foggy, illustrated visages of the mid-90’s post-necro black sound to create an album that is fun once or twice, but might labor on through any additional visits. It really depends on your personal affinity towards music of this type and just how versed you are in its historical and employable importance.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by Ringmaster Review

Image

By RingMaster

Recently old school Swedish thrash metal has been ‘resurrected’ by a growing number of bands with the strongest spark of energy coming with the release of Inevitable Decay from Entrench. Steeped in the origins and influences of the genre the debut album from the Västerås, near Stockholm, quartet will excite and thrill all fans of thrash whichever flavour they prefer. With the sounds of the likes of Kreator and Slayer and even a touch of early Metallica , running through its veins the release via Abyss Records, is a proud and loud crushing riff and dynamic rhythms fest of sound.
Entrench already had juices flowing and anticipation for their first full release ripe with several demos that brought forth their irrepressible thrash metal intrusions. With Inevitable Decay the appetite many gained from those releases will be fully appeased, though the dynamic sounds and dramatic intensity of the eight destructive stabs of metal will probably inspire more greed than they satisfy.
Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Fredrik Pellbrink, fellow guitarist Hannes Lindkvist, and Joel Sundin and Joel Gustafsson providing the pummelling rhythms on bass and drums respectively, Entrench have created an album that not only harks back to and re-animates the old school thrash mayhem, but actually sounds as if the tracks were recorded back then too. Whether it is a positive or negative is hard to tell, it certainly adds extra thrust and in a way more fury to the sound but production wise the music feels restricted, the full onslaught of the band held back. This is especially the case with the work of bassist Sundin, throughout it is a struggle to hear him distinctly and often one wonders if he upset the producer in some way. This leads to what feels like a less than rounded sound overall but despite this the album is still a striking and pleasing release. It carries no pretensions nor gives unnecessary thrills and spills, just straight from the heart thrash metal intent and energy.
The songs are nicely varied under the nonstop incessant bombardment of heavyweight riffs and ear splitting guitars, with the vocals of Pellbrink coarse and malicious matching the raw sounds and direct lyrical content, which itself is scathing and unrestricted. Consistency across the songs is impressive and it is hard to pick out particular songs but moments like the unrelenting drive and collision on the ear from ‘Debt Of Sorrow’, the varied attack and pace changes within ‘Into Oblivion’, as well as the melodic almost acidic guitars leading in ‘Portrait of a Phobia’ are all memorable and pleasing excursions into the ear.
As mentioned the songs are varied but across the trio of consecutive songs ‘Doubt What’s Left’, ‘Blind Illusion’, and ‘Crossing The River’, there is a real similarity especially in the opening segments to the songs. The tracks do expand into their own directions but it does indicate there is still an area that has space to be developed in their songwriting. To be fair it is almost a case of looking for something to balance the positives and it will certainly not be an issue for thrash lovers.
Inevitable Decay is an honest chunk of old school thrash reproduced and given its own flavour from Entrench, and though it is unlikely to feature as an essential purchase recommendation it will easily find a large amount of eager hearts and ears to satisfy.
