MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by chaosvault

Image

By chaosvault

Somehow I always had, that the United associating me with the bands Death and Thrash metal is probably due to the big names. Few other hand comes from this country things zwianych of Black Metal ...
Maybe not so little, but converting the number of Black Metal bands on the number of residents in the U.S. is rather little of the scum crawling out from underground. A and I are somehow in contact with the great black metal from overseas do not have and can therefore Maax and his latest work , " Unholy Rock & Roll " fairly quickly it coincided with my taste. In fact, Black Metal in the case of Maax is not everything, because I love animals but men burn with no less sympathy for the high-proof alcoholic drinks and old Heavy Metal. This is the first to hear the vocals Tim przepitych that probably for the best results from each concert on the bugle call crashes 0.7 Johnny Walker. And the other, or Heavy Metal can be heard almost everywhere. Melodic fragments in the pattern of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden songs sneak by almost all the time and even further remarkable solos add a whole even greater feelingu (but this is zjebane word, but it fits me like never here hehe). Listening to this CD I still have a compelling combination that some of the inspiration for her recordings were also taken from the works of the immortal king of perversion and obscenizmu, my personal hero U.S. national, or GG Allin.
You can hear on this record that the team likes to play properly napierdolić and satanic rock and roll, a great pleasure to them to question, and even I think no less, because listening to " Unholy Rock & Roll " overlaps with an appetite for vodka kuplami and a trip to church with crowbars and axes in hand hehe.

HAT (Norway) "Vortex of Death" DIGI CD review by http://www.norskmetal.net

Image

By Pestifer

Hate is a relatively new band signed but they have actually been around since `93

On their second full length album, "Vortex of Death", we get old-school black metal of the ugly variety. After the first hearing through I thought it was all a bit tame and boring. But since I gave the album a few more chances as it turns out that it just grows and grows each through listening. It's not just straight black metal these guys have to offer, here are a number of fatty streaks that are helping to lift the album up and makes it all much more interesting.

"Vortex of Death" is struggling a bit with perhaps a bit tame sound, but it suits the album and the music really well and I would think it was some of the guys were looking for, a little old school and ugly sound. By personal favorites so can the "Overmenneske", "The Flesh I Wear" and the little special "Tilintetgjørelsen" is mentioned.

So all in all a completely approved slice. Like old school and dirty black metal you should check it out. I'll NOK to hear quite a bit in the future too.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) "Tyrants and Men" DIGI CD review by ringmasterreviewintroduces

Image

By RingMaster

The new album from Alaskans Thousand Year War creates a very satisfying blend of old school melodic death and black metal with other classic metal flavours resulting in an interesting and at times enthralling array of powerful and direct sounds. Tyrants And Men may not be exactly rippling in originality but it delivers metal that stirs up the senses with creative essences alongside its pummelling assaults.
From Anchorage and begun in 2008, Thousand Year War for this album is guitarist and vocalist Hiram Lohr with session musicians Kellen on bass and drummer Fredrik Widigs. Released via Abyss Records, Tyrants And Men took time to find its way into the world’s ears. While working as a commercial fisherman to finance it the album was recorded by Lohr at Garden Studios in Anchorage with Kellen, it was then upon the failure to find a skilled drummer at home sent across to Fredrik Widigs (The Ugly And Desultor) in Sweden summer of 2009 to lay down a drum track. Once passed on then to be mixed and mastered by Fredrik Lunneborg of Primecut Studios in Sweden, the album was presented before Dan Ferguson of Abyss Records leading to the band being signed and its release in September of this year. It may have taken time but has proven well worth the wait.
The album, as a great many others have also said has a distinct Amon Amarth flavour to it and if a fan of their striking and powerful sounds Tyrants And Men will be a definite winner. Rampant riffs, striking flowing guitars and incisive solos, plus a vocal mix of guttural growls and higher pitched screams fly from the tracks with ease and strong ability. Though the album does not venture often too far from expected melodic death metal sounds and craft it is definitely one of the more accomplished releases lately in sound and production.
Lyrically the album deals with the duality and opposition between the ruling evil elite running the world and the people, who are constantly battling to turn the world we live in around with truth, not power and wealth. The theme is as powerful as the sounds and adds a good deeper dimension to the release.
There is a good strong level across the album, each track holding its own and giving great satisfaction but some moments really show the band as a future force as well as a more than decent band right now. ‘The Sea’ is a lively blend of great melodic guitars and grooves rippling beneath the intense vocals and drums, and its successor ‘No Gods, No Masters’ an irrepressible blast of dark rock ‘n’ roll that eagerly pounds away with enthused energy. It may not be the more original track on the album but it is undeniably one of the more exiting. The one song that lifts its head highest is ‘Open Casket’, breaking out on a classic rock riff not out of place in a Maiden song the track brings in some smart and intricate guitar play that lights up the dark mood fuelling the song. Every song on the album has its moment though and it is impossible to find a weak track anywhere.
The downside to the album? There is not much apart from the previously mentioned lack of anything really new or unpredictable. There is also an overall sameness across some of the tracks but with honesty could not that be levelled at the majority of releases these days to some degree? Thousand Year War has produced an album that more than can hold its own against any other and makes the thirty five minutes plus a very worthwhile and agreeable use of time and that can easily be repeated again and again.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by http://www.wormwoodchronicles.com

Image

By Dr. Abner Mality

Entrench (not to be confused with the new death metal band Entrenched, who are also fantastic) is more like what I thought Hemoptysis would be like. This is raw, neck-breaking fury that is one of the most successful attempts to recreate the heyday of German thrash I've ever heard. It is an amazing tribute to the 85 to 87 era of that scene, right down to the 100% retro analog production that will bring tears to an old headbanger's eyes. Modern day digital kids might not get it, but fuck them if they can't feel the energy here! For sheer thrashing mayhem, I haven't heard one like this in a long time...not only does it bring back memories of Kreator's "Pleasure To Kill", Sodom's "Persecution Mania" and Destruction's "Infernal Overkill", but also many not-so-famous kraut-thrashers such as Vectom, Violent Force, Necronomicon and more. American retro-thrashers could learn a lot from these Swedes...even the super-crude cover art recalls the primitive glory of that earlier time!

ANGIST (Iceland) Interview by no-mercy-zine

Image

By NO MERCY

-Infernal Hails, could you please introduce Angist to the readers.

Hello! We are the Icelandic death metal band Angist. We are very excited to be featured in your zine!

-Please give us an explanation of the inception of Angist, What is your goal and your target what inspired you to create Angist?

When it all boils down we are friends who are passionate about music and are creating music that we love. We love playing our music and we just want to get it out to people who share our passion. There’s so much filth in this world and people doing evil things and that’s what the lyrics are about so maybe more people will be aware of what’s going on around them.

-What can you tell us about your line up ?

Angist was formed by Edda Tegeder (vocals/guitar) and Gyða Hrund (guitar). When we decided to make this into a proper band we got Halli (Edda’s brother) to join as bass player. We’ve had few changes in drummers but our new drummer, Tumi, joined last fall after we released our EP with another drummer. We feel that now Angist is complete because it’s essential that all members are passionate about this project. Tumi is also in another band, tech/death band called Ophidian I.

-What do you think about the girls in the metal movement?

Of course we support that! Metal shouldn’t be about gender, it’s an open party for everyone so the more the merrier! Gyða and Edda are the only girls playing in the metal scene in Iceland and have always been but we hope to inspire one or two. But there are a lot of girls that go to gigs in Iceland, support the bands, take amazing photographs and are just big fans in general so that’s also important. Any involvement is great, whether it’s playing or any other participation.

-Have you more success with the two blonde witches ?

We don’t believe so, maybe more people will check out the music out of curiosity but we believe the music stands for itself and it shouldn’t matter if we have girls in the band or not. Sometimes it’s even a set back because people don’t believe that girls can make music like that. But we aren’t advertising ourselves as having girls in the band because it really doesn’t matter, if the music is good, then the music is good.

-How did you learn to play?

Halli has been playing bass for many years with few band here in Iceland, Gyða is a band promoter that picked up a guitar in her 20’s when she decided that she much rather wanted to play music, Edda has been playing guitar since she was 13 years old when she locked herself in her bedroom with Metallica tab books and has been playing in many different projects since. Tumi has been studying drums in the Icelandic Music University for years and also played for few bands here and still is.

-What are the metal bands that influenced you or motivated you ?

There are so many bands that have influenced us in one way or another. Early Metallica, Bloodbath, Decapitated, Emperor, Suffocation and Slayer have all inspired us as metal fans but other bands like Led Zeppelin, NIN, jazz and all sorts of music always moves you and you take influence from everything you listen to. Also music that has sincere and meaningful lyrics, that’s very important to us.

-What kind of music do you listen to yourself ?

Well we listen to all sorts of music really. Of course a lot of metal as mentioned before, and different genres like black metal as well.

-How is the metal scene in Iceland ?

The population of the entire country is only around 320.000 people so it's quite obvious that our scene is rather small but it's also very close knit, everyone knows everyone. But because it's a small scene people try to help each other out so for example when someone is going to record an album they usually put up a fund raiser gig and the other bands help out by playing for free, making posters, lending equipment, advertising etc.But we have a lot of bands and different styles so within the scene there is a scene of black metal bands, death metal bands, technical death metal bands, hardcore bands etc. and when there's a gig on you get almost every time a range of bands which is great because it can broaden your musical horizon and you can get into a genre of music that you didn't know you liked.

What I would also say about the scene here is that the people are very dedicated and hard working. We have so many amazing bands here and even though we are usually just playing for the same people there's always a gig going on, people recording and releasing records on their own, financed from their own pockets and lately bands are getting more attention outside of Iceland and scoring record deals which is great! We definitely recommend people to check out bands like Sólstafir, Blood Feud, Skálmöld, Gone Postal, Gruesome Glory, Atrum, Beneath and many more!

-Tell us about your current metal playlist and your occupation between musician and with friends

The new Hate Eternal album and the new Gojira album has been getting a few spins lately as well as Decapitated’s Carnival is Forever. Also our friends in Blood Feud just released a new album so we’ve been checking that out. We love partying and we throw a lot of parties and BBQ’s and it’s great to have a lot of friends over and have fun. The Blood Feud guys are a must if you want to party!!

-What kind of music do you play in your car? What car do you own ?

Haha Gyða is the only one who has a car, the Angist mobile (a very small Opel Corsa) that has an amazingly big trunk to fit stuff in for roadie-ing. But cars or ipods on the bus, it’s just whatever is on our playlist at the time.

-What are some of your non-musical influences?

The society and its imperfections influence us in making our music and the lyrics. There's so much violence and ugliness out there that is condoned by people and the society so we are trying to raise awareness of these matters. Subjects like human misery, destructive behaviour, violence, psychopaths, lack of conscience, addiction, apathy, self loathing and overall degeneration of humanity would describe our lyrics well. The human race is capable of such cruelty towards other people and them selves and we have amazing ability of destroying everything around us and even ourselves.

-What are your occupations outside Angist

Tumi and Edda are students, Gyða is a high school teacher and Halli is working for the state.

-Did you ever played other kind of music?

Gyða and Halli have just been in metal bands but Tumi is also in a prog rock band. Edda has been in many different projects like punk, trip hop/rock, troubadour and rock.

-What can you tell us about the songs that are available on your official myspace page?

Our Ruin and Rotten Mind are the first two songs that we wrote and came out on a limited edition demo. The other songs are from the EP Circle of Suffering.

-What do you planned after recording the EP Circle of Suffering ?

When we finished recording Circle of Suffering we went straight into finding a replacement drummer, which can be quite difficult on our small island. We finished recording the album in summer 2011 and it was released in October that same year. Few days after the release of the EP we went on a tour in France with Tumi as a session drummer and after that tour he became a full-time member. Since then we’ve just been busy playing a lot of shows and working on new material.

-Abyss Records! it's professional ! how was working with this label ?

So far it has been great. They are very dedicated and professional and we feel that we are in good hands. It’s very important to get support from your label and Abyss Records are fantastic. We are very much looking forward to work with them on our upcoming album.

-Which label would fit your music?

Abyss Records!

-What its means the CD cover of Circle of Suffering?

It reminds us that Death is always near and life is an endless circle of suffering. The marsh with swarming souls depicts humanity and over them is Death.

-Do you have any future split with any band ?

Well there’s a talk about that but we just have to see what happens, we can’t say anything more at this time.

-Any fav bands to get on stage with ?

Of Icelandic bands we love sharing stage with our buddies from Skálmöld and Blood Feud. They are such great guys and everyone helps out. Of foreign bands it was awesome to play with Heaven Shall Burn and Sight of Emptiness but it would be a dream to share a stage with Suffocation, Bloodbath, Gojira, Decapited, Hate Eternal or any of our favorites.

-What is the biggest change compared to your the debut ?

Definitely stage performance. We are more comfortable and have such fun being on stage together, playing our music and seeing the crowd response to our songs.
Also we have matured a lot with the song writing and we have a clearer vision where we are going with our music.

-What is your daily consumption amount of alcohol, cigarettes, drugs ?

Edda drinks unhealthy amounts of coffee and the rest of the band just drinks alcohol on weekends.

-Would you like to ask me a question?

Yes how is the scene in your country and do you get a lot of foreign bands to tour over there?

In my country !!!! the metal scéne is nearly dead since 2006 she is in her grave , and it was limited side organization, there were many amateur bands a few bands are good like The Kult of SatanåchiîA the first true black metal band in algéria formed in 1998 , Litham death metal formed in 1996, Neanderthalia the first heavy metal band in algeria formed in 1992, Devast , Dead Stone , Rahdj ............................... and there were some bands that has been at Lelahel fest Suhrim came from Belgium in 2003, Slavery from France in 2005, Bloody sign from France in 2006 ...........but some local bands make funny mixage like oriental metal , some one import a little of nation culture to their music ................. i hate this kind of metal but there are many local bands who can and must progress if they work correctly with the pleusure to play this music for succeed and sharing good things, good times on stage and satisfy the audience

-Thank you alot for sharing your time with No Mercy Zine , do you have any particular messages or any closing notes , last words are yours ?

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by paperblog

Image

By ODIN

This EP is short and sweet, probably not more than 15 or 16 minutes, so I’ll just cut to the chase as well. I really, really dig this. Humangled is a band from Pisa, Italy (as in, I’m assuming, Leaning Tower Of), who have been active off and on since 1996. From the bio I read mostly off. Which is a shame because this release is really good. I really wish there was more of it. I’m really saying really a lot.

The EP comprises just 4 tracks, and they are very interesting. I know many of you like to have your metal jammed into some sub-genre, but Humangled really doesn’t allow for that. If I had to call them anything, it’d be melodic death, but that doesn’t do justice to what they are laying down. There are some traces of 90’s alterna-metal, Helmet actually came to mind at times, as well as just some solid heavy rock. Whatever the case, it’s an interesting blend and one that I would like to hear a lot more of. Which means I’ll be checking out the back catalog.

A lot of metal bands have the “good cop, bad cop” vocals going. These guys seem to have the “bad cop, fucking nightmare cop” formula. Which is kinda cool, again because you don’t hear anyone else doing that. Just another little twist that caught my attention.

This is very well written music. It skips around a little bit like Dillinger Escape Plan, but not in the jarring way that those guys do it that always makes me want to find them and punch them. But it is not music that just plods along at the same tempo and the same time signature and the same blah, blah, blah, either. This is music that is interesting and is going somewhere and definitely needs to be heard. So check it out and you can thank me later.

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by http://www.legacy-magazin.de

Image

By Alexander Renner

This young Swedish band shows their debut material through this CD, and they offer Death Metal. The pace of this CD tends to be placed in the mid-tempo r, and is geared towards Deicide, Hypnos and old Hypocrisy, to name a few.

'Salvation From Below' starts with a sample, which probably stems from some kind of Excorcism film. The beginning of this track is a little slower, but over time it grows faster faster. The five boys never expire while in frenzy, and the vocal range is reminiscent of Hypocrisy with Masse Broberg. In the title song the guitar at first plays a solo before the vocals start and it then continues in the usual style.

'The Dark Mistress' contains slower passages, one could almost think of doom metal, and here you can feel the most reminiscence of Hypocrisy. The following 'Path To Perdition' is almost entirely in a faster pace, and how this band does best. In 'Death To A Depraved Mind' the vocals deeper and creates a bit of variety. The drums at the following 'Blazing Fall Of Heaven' are a bit tinny, but its not very noticable and does not interfere with your listening pleasure.

The final two tracks 'Hell Recreated' and 'Faces Of Death' from a demo and stand out from the sound picture, but who would expect a demo to already have perfect sound? So all death metal maniacs should risk an ear, except if they want continuous speed.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.metal-observer.com

Image

By Neil

On their sophomore effort Serbia’s BANE continue to demonstrate their aptitude for weaving together various strands of Black and Death Metal, infusing it with more than a few classy melodies, and allowing the blasting rhythms and tremolo picked guitars to coagulate into a coherent (and crushing) whole. While not a perfect record, “The Acausal Fire” may very well be one of the better albums of its kind I’ve heard in a while, effortlessly marrying the pervasive cold atmosphere of early DISSECTION with the more direct blast-ridden aesthetics of a band like BELPHEGOR.

The Black and Death Metal elements effectively balance each other out across these ten songs, and in spite of the strong resemblance to the aforementioned DISSECTION (and perhaps even NAGLFAR), the band’s sense of melody comfortably sees the album through. Granted, “The Acausal Fire” tends to be a bit lop-sided as the majority of the most memorable and striking moments occur during the frankly brilliant first half, but by the time “The Truth Unleashed” rolls around they’ve done enough to convince me that they are indeed a band that’s not to be taken lightly, even if they do have a few kinks to iron out.

After a surprisingly grandiose intro that evokes Symphonic or Doom Metal more than extreme Black/Death, they get right down to business with “The End Of Humanity”. Driven forward by a main riff that is equal parts epic and extreme (a la KEEP OF KALLESIN-meets-BELPHEGOR), ferocious drumming and subtle melodies that snake in and out in the background, this one simply nails this formula. The songs are written in such a way that the melodies flow with the music the one moment and provide stark counterpoint the next. This doesn’t dent the cohesion of the album, but rather serves to imbue it with a healthy dose of variety and class. The slower tempo and melodic cadence of “In Endless Silence” immediately made me think of Max Richter’s “On The Nature Of Daylight”, while the soaring lead work in “As Chaos Rises” owes as much to AMON AMARTH as it does to classic Heavy Metal. As stated earlier, the second half of the album fails to capture the imagination as much as the glorious first half. For whatever reason, there is a peculiar lack of dynamic on songs like “The Truth Unleashed”, “World Of Desolation” and the perfunctory interlude (“Entering The Paradoxical Sphere”). Sure, they race along in fine DISSECTION/NECROPHOBIC style but lack a bit of magic. They do throw us a bone right at the end, though, as the cover of DISSECTION’s classic “Night’s Blood” is simply amazing, capturing all its subtle melodic nuances in deft fashion.

Even though it also suffers from the same kind of inconsistency that plagued “Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness”, this is overall is a better effort than their debut. The song-writing feels more concise, focused and better paced, while the crisp production is also commendable. Of course we’ve heard this synthesis of Black and Death Metal numerous times before, so this album won’t necessarily win over many new fans. What it will do, however, is to remind those of us who love the chilly atmospherics of albums like “Storm Of The Light’s Bane”, “Far Away From The Sun” and “Slaughtersun (Crown Of The Triarchy)” just why we’re fans in the first place.

The Gardnerz -It All Fades Out Now

Image

It All Fades, the new mini-album from Swedish death/doom metal outfit THE GARDNERZ, is out now on Abyss Records.

The follow up to last year's The System of Nature, It All Fades sees The Gardnerz venture into more melancholic territory while still retaining their trademark massive sound.

"This time around the songs are a bit slower and darker than on The System Of Nature (the band's debut), we tried to continue on the path we have chosen," said guitarist Wilhelm Linhd. "We have found our niche and have no reason to stray, so if you liked our first release you will like It All Fades as well. This time it was a bit more of a group effort and I think that made the songs stronger."

To mark the release of It All Fades, AxisOfMetal.com, who gave the world its first taste of the new EP with the premier of the track "Don't Look Back," is now offering fans an exclusive stream of "A Horrible Disease." Check out the track at this location: http://axisofmetal.com/2012/10/axis-of- ... -gardnerz/

It All Fades can be purchased at the Abyss Records Webstore: http://www.officialabyssrecords.com/adv ... e+gardnerz

"It All Fades is an amazing effort from The Gardnerz." - Foul Feast Webzine

"This will not be removed from my player for quite a long time." - This Is Not A Scene

THE GARDNERZ is a doomy death metal band from the south of Sweden, THE GARDNERZ was formed in the middle of 2008 by Wilhelm and in late 2008 Francisco joined the band and the debut album started to take shape. A longtime friend of Francisco, Juan Pablo was recruited to do the drums and after a long time of searching for a vocalist Niclas stepped in to the picture. THE GARDNERZ inked a deal with Abyss Records in late 2010 The band's debut album, The System Of Nature, is now out on digipack CD through Abyss Records, on LP through Mechanix Records and digital download through Digmetalworld. Boosted by the tremendous response from the debut album the band started working on new material. In 2011a new drummer, Vedran Benčić, was recruited and after a few months of rehearsing the new songs the band decided to record a Ep. The recording started in early 2012 and yielded the It All Fades Mini Album containing six doom and death filed tracks.

The Gardnerz - A doom/death metal hybrid with allot of twists and turns that will keep you on your toes, not your garden variety band. Blending slow and heavy riffs with melodies distorted and clean.Taking influences from all over the musical spectra, but keeping a solid metal foundation. Mixing technicality with simplicity to get as varied music as possible.

THE GARDNERZ Recording Lineup:

Niclas Ankarbranth - Vocals

Wilhelm Lindh - Guitar

Franciso Martín - Bass

Vedran Benčić - Drums

Abyss Records Unleashes ERUPTED's In the Grip of Chaos Today

Image

In the Grip of Chaos, the debut full-length from Swedeath upstarts ERUPTED is out now on Abyss Records.

The album was recorded at Kloster Productions by Robin ''Rojne'' Svensson, who worked with the band on their sold-out 2010 Faces of Death EP. To capture the true essence of the old-school Swedish death metal recordings that influenced their sound, ERUPTED recorded the bass and drum tracks live on analog tape.

Check out for yourself with the AxisOfMetal.com debut of the song "Salvation from Below" streaming now at this location: http://axisofmetal.com/2012/10/axis-of- ... m-erupted/

In the Grip of Chaos is available at http://www.officialabyssrecords.com.

Image

"The ten songs that make up this 'In The Grip Of Chaos' will be a live bullets as they have everything to make the audience goes crazy headbanging with infernal rhythms of songs like 'Blazing Fall of Heaven' or the passages pasty songs like 'Path of Perdition' or 'Dark Mistress' that reminds me of some old ENTOMBED." - Tania Giménez, http://www.queensofsteel.com

"Erupted do not practice the typical overdrive and melody that their hundreds of peers thrive off. This is a much cruder sound, redolent of brutes like Cianide or Autopsy." - From the Dust Returned

Erupted was formed in 2010 when a former project of three members of Beyond Hell, a band plagued with lineup changes, decided to make a new start. After playing several local shows during 2010 and in 2011, Erupted recorded a three-song EP entitled Faces of Death. Released on June 1st, Faces of Death sold out in 2 hours.
Playing off that momentum, Erupted proudly unleashed their full-length debut, In the Grip of Chaos, upon the masses via Abyss Records.

Erupted's musical style is based on old school elements with a modern and progressive touch, as well as an philosophical and occult lyrical element.

DAEMONICUS' Newest Offering Deadwork Out Now On Abyss Records

Image

Umeå, Sweden's dealers of death metal DAEMONICUS have made their latest burnt offering, Deadwork, available for global consumption via Abyss Records.

GunShyAssassin.com has posted an exclusive premier of album track "The Hymn of Ubo Sathla" at this location: http://gunshyassassin.com/rad/daemonicu ... more-32859

The band's second full-length release, Deadwork is the epitome of aggressive death metal. The album was recorded at Fenix Recording Studios (Drums) and the band's own C.C.H.B. Studios (Guitars, Bass & Vocals). Deadwork was produced by DAEMONICUS in conjunction with Krille Englund. Mixing and mastering came courtesy of Ronnie Björnström of Enhanced Audio Productions at Garageland Studios in Umeå. Deadwork is available at http://www.officialabyssrecords.com.

Image

"I need a fucking pit, right now. Right. Now." - Popdose.com

"Daemonicus is not one to eschew melody or variation in a stumbling attempt to recreate Left Hand Path, Slaughter of the Soul or any other Swedish monument, but there's no doubt they've got a lot of influence from Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, Bolt Thrower, Amon Amarth and other Euro gods." - From the Dust Returned

"Daemonicus has tapped every aspect of Swedish death metal and rolled it up into one evil package for our listening pleasure." - WickedChannel.com

Daemonicus is a Swedish death metal band spawned in 2006.

The first slab of gore - a four track demo, entitled Demon Inside, was a self-produced effort that received great reviews in magazines and fanzines. In February 2007 Daemonicus recorded their second audio assault. Swarm of Death a three track demo that ultimately landed Daemonicus a record deal with ViciSolum Productions.

Daemonicus' debut album, Host of Rotting Flesh was recorded in Ballerina Audio in October 2008 and was released in the spring of 2009. During the summer of 2009 Daemonicus parted ways with bassist Tommi Konu. His replacement was found in Martin Pudas who joined the band later that year.

However, before Martin signed up for the bass duty Daemonicus decided to try out their own studio, C.C.H.B. Studio, to record some songs. Two new songs and two covers were recorded. The result was crushing and it was released in February 2010 as an EP entitled 11th Hour.

Daemonicus did their first tour abroad in January - February of 2010. That tour took the band to the Balkans. The last gig of the tour, in Sofia, turned out to be drummer Magnus Boström´s last gig with Daemonicus. His successor was found in Johan Hallbäck who joined the band in May 2010.

Daemonicus will continue to play death metal with this solid line-up and have just released their second full-length album, Deadwork, on Abyss Records.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.thegrimtower.blogspot.com

Image

By Eric May

These Sweden doomsters don't exactly sound like the kind of doom that you might be expecting. As a matter of fact, they might be more in line with their death metal counterparts and that's certainly not a bad thing. But there are still certain moments of doom to round everything out, and you will still get your dull croons.

There are just six tracks on this 35:00 MCD, but the band certainly does offer some interesting material, particularly on their cover of Darkthrone's "Transilvanian Hunger" (Does anyone care that they've spelled the name of that disc wrong for years?) which will make most black metal kvltists foam at the fucking mouth. But why is that exactly?

Well, because the cover is done with only an acoustic guitar and some haunting female vocals. Sure, there are some of you who might like it, and I have to say that it is unique and done quite well; but I'm sure that there will also be a few people screaming, "Blasphemy! What the fuck is this? Who shit in my peanut butter?" There's no drums here, no scowls, no heavy riffs. It's just a few acoustic guitars and a female singer who doesn't appear on any of the other songs on this album.

Yet this song is not even a foreshadow for the rest of the disc, so let's talk about the other five tracks. You're definitely going to hear your doom with your deathy vocals "Melatonin 3:48", "A Horrible Disease 7:50" but don't cry when the band decides to pull out some classic rock melodies because they felt like it. This band also doesn't mind playing a ton of prog riffs, and I sure as hell am not complaining, because they meld well with the doom and shake things up a bit. The disc has some great solos too, it doesn't matter if they're acoustic or classic style guitar jizzery, it all works for me.

However, I could care less for the guy screaming along with the vocalist in "It All Fades 4:48", I personally think it's amateurish. Other than that, I think the band showcased a good side of themselves on this EP, but I wish that they had waited and gave us a full hour of music with the Darkthrone cover tacked on as bonus.

I'd have to recommend this to fans of death/doom worldwide, because the band shows that they've got a handle on their instruments, they don't care if they bend the rules a little; and they show an experimental prowess that we need more of in the metal genre today. That cover was unprecedented to me, and spoke volumes about the band's willingness to shake up black metal elitists around the world by seemingly blaspheming one of the genre's most prized bands.

While not the best death/doom I've heard, it's certainly worth checking out. I think you'll enjoy it if you give it a shot. Certainly unique and definitely bleak.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.thegrimtower.blogspot.com

Image

By Eric May

Bane (and not the guy that broke Batman's back) are a black/death band from the Czech Republic. They're a three-piece consisting of Brainslav who does the leads, rhythm & acoustic guitars as well as the vocals. The other guy (or mysterious entity, but I'm thinking that it's a dude) is called Occvltm Mallevs and he's the drummer. But it would be seriously badass if they really did have an non-human entity as their skinsman. Nokkturno is the bass player. The disc was mastered by "Butcher" (Avenger / Eyecult) who also guests along with Nocturnal (Shadowdream / Ancient Sorrow), & Patrik Carlsson (Anachronaeon / Eyecult).

But enough about all that. How does these guys sound? Well, definitely fucking capable. This is blasphemous black/death and you're getting what you pay for. But don't be surprised when you hear some melodies on this disc. They're great melodies though, and they help to drive the album. The vocals go from scowls to growls and everything in between. You can tell that Brainslav worshipped at the altar of Dissection in his riffs, and there's even a killer cover of Dissection's "Nights Blood 7:12" that does absolutely, positively, not suck.

The black does overpower the death in this mix, but it seeks to be more sinister, Satanic, and overly occultic material. It trounces with a vengeance, but doing so in the way that many who have heard Dissection are already well aware of. So it's not "quite" new, but it's certainly worth checking out. "The Truth Unleashed 4;38", "As Chaos Rises 4:27", "World Of Desolation 3:24" and bleak opener "The End Of Humanity 4:05" are all good songs, but one begins to feel as though the band is strictly adhering to one dimension, consisting of lots of blasts, standard-fare black metal guitar (but in the vein of early Dissection) and a dual vocal approach of both black and death most of the time.

For some odd reason, this promo sheet tells me that this band sounds like early Katatonia and Opeth. Hmm... I've heard both those bands in their earliest, and while I admit at slight hints of prog, melody and bleakness (it even has some short solos) I don't remember Opeth or Katatonia blasting up a storm. I don't even remember Dissection being that blast hungry. But I will say that the melodies do help to sweeten the deal just a little bit.

The intro piece and outro piece are okay, but honestly; who is actually enjoying intros/outros these days? It's just some orchestral march stuff that we've heard umpteen million times. They could've capped that stuff and we'd have been fine.

If by chance this Dissection laden throwback( with slightly more death metal influence on the vocals) appeals to you, then check it out. I'm personally more for Thulcandra, but these guys killed with their Nights Blood cover. I definitely recommend you at least check it out, but the rest of the album is well worth hearing too. While it's not the best thing you've ever heard, it's still decent enough and might fill the Dissection hole for a while.

But I would've loved more variety.

Highlights: The End Of Humanity, As Chaos Rises, The Truth Unleashed, Existence In Denial, Night's Blood (10 Tracks, 41:00)

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.secret-face.com

Image

By Death8699

This barely known Italian death metal band has been in existence since 1996, but didn't start putting out material till 2007 and a full-length in 2010. This EP is only about 15 minutes in length, however, it's an amazing onslaught of pure powerful crunch tone destruction (guitar wise). There are no leads here, just rhythm guitar riffs that are very well put together and catchy. On the vocal department, they mix hoarse vox in combination with some mild screams. It fits well with the music.

There are 5 members in this band and I think that if they keep putting out music like they have been, I believe that they're going to be highly successful. Their abilities to play some original guitar riffs with a slight groove base to them then they're going to go onto something bigger I think. What I always look for in metal are the guitars and production quality. Here there's a combination of like I said original guitar work alongside a solid production. The overall sound of the EP has a mild echo to it. Everything is mixed well and it's good that there were no solos.

I think that for the most part, this EP is a demonstration of how death metal should be played. Guitars playing fast but the drums contain no blast beating that with some bands can be boring. Odd Ethics is a demonstration of sheer talent from a musical perspective. These members dish out riffs that are well played out and original. It sounds like they tune down to maybe B-tuning. It's really heavy guitar but definitely memorable and entirely innovative.

The vocals sounded good with the combination of throat not just low bellowing monotonous voice, but a mixture of 2 tones. I liked the guitar riffs the most because as I previously stated they were original and featured tremolo picked overtures combined with slower variations. The production made this EP totally awesome. Everything is in unison and nothing drowns out the music, vocals or drums. All was entirely well mixed.

If you haven't ever heard of Humangled and you're a death metal fan, I'd recommend that you pick up this EP! It's so awesome you won't be disappointed. Don't expect something really fast though, expect variety in songwriting. Hopefully in time this band will put out another full-length CD, but for now be sure to enjoy for what's in store for you during the time you listen to this EP. It's brilliant, original, innovative, well produced and overall a fine addition to your death metal collection!

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by http://www.secret-face.com

Image

By Death8699

Follow up release from the album "Dawnbringer", this album reflects that of Satanic rock and roll but is considered to fit into the genre of black metal. The lineup consists of Tim on vocals, Brett on guitars, Kyle on guitars, Jeremy on bass and James on drums. I wouldn't consider this band to be within the black metal genre at all except for the vocals sounding a little bit like Legion from Devian/Marduk. There is much to be said about this band that I will orchestrate.

Musically, they have distorted tone guitars with way heavy blues influence to their sound. All of the songs reflect this and aren't very fast paced at all. They have a distinctive groove to them featuring rhythm guitars with a crunch tone to them and heavy rock influence. If there's something to say about this band, it would be that they're highly skilled in achieving their album title as well as a very unique style of black metal that's finely played out.

Every song contains guitars that aren't highly difficult to play if you're a guitarist. They feature palm muted riffs galore mixed with distinctive rhythms that are noteworthy and highly innovative. The lead guitar bits are highly technical and played out with vigor. They suit the rhythms quite well and the vocals are raspy with occasional change ups, but not many. Tempos of the guitars for the most part are like I've mentioned, slow especially on the instrumental track. There's a clean tone guitar mixed with lead bits.

Even the faster tracks are still not that fast like blast beating. The song entitled "Overthrone" is one to YouTube because it's more on the black metal end than the rest of the songs. This band doesn't play anything that's overtly heavy. The distortion on the guitars make them sound more thrash metal based. This is featured throughout the album. Some songs darker than others. Most of them dark though with a little kick to them.

I haven't heard their debut release so I cannot compare this one to their debut. Something new is here with this album that I have yet to hear which is black metal played with a rock and roll style of guitar rhythms. I'm still perplexed by this. Not many bands that I've heard play like this, but the lyrical contents are mindless. It's not difficult to sing about Satanism. What is difficult is to hear a band play rock and roll style of guitar work with these lyrical concepts.

The mixing/production sound was a little bit flat sounding especially on the drums. But the vocals, guitars, bass, and drums are still in there pretty solid and well mixed together to compliment the album. The production could've been better, but for an underground band, the "raw" sound encompassed the album well to make it into a decent release. I suppose that they made this album with that kind of sound to fit into the overall darker fix to them.

Something's happened here that never does happen with a black metal band and again that's to be that of one who plays guitars with a rock base to them. This album isn't overtly heavy, but highly original and unique. I suppose that you could say "Unholy Rock and Roll" really fits with the sound of this album. If you're into rock, you may even take a liking to this release. I thought that it was highly unique and noteworthy. They really did a good job with achieving their goal of sounding highly original. Pick this up!

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) "Tyrants and Men" DIGI CD review by http://www.secret-face.com

Image

By Death8699

This melodic death acts' debut here features a lot of innovation and creativity in songwriting. Their lineup on the release feature Hiram Lohr on guitars/vocals, Kellen Sharp on guitars/bass/vocals, and Fredrik Widigs on drums. An unknown band right now that needs to be well known especially within their genre. All of the songs are good and the whole CD clocks in about 40 minutes in length featuring 10 awesome songs. Amazing band and I'll tell you why. But first of all, I was stupefied by this brilliant debut. They caught me off guard into how wonderfully creative this album is.

From a musical standpoint, this album sounds a lot like Hypocrisy's latest release, but maybe even better. The songs entail unimaginable melodies that shine in triumph. A lot of palm muted riffs with gallops galore and high quality tremolo picking by Hiram and Kellen. The solos could use some brushing up, but the rhythms were unimaginably impeccable. Every song deserves praise. The vocals vary between heavy throat outputs that make it sound more like a death metal release, but also feature screams as well. Both fit the music intelligently and augment the guitar riffs in unison.

I liked all of the songs on here because of their impeccable design and music that's played out with vigor galore. No letting up here. They really nailed it even on this debut. It seems like this band was around for a while, but their origin was dating back to 2008. The guitars to me are what stand out the most. Not the leads, but the melodies. The leads were poorly performed unfortunately and I would've given the band an even higher rating if they stuck with only the rhythms.

The production/mixing was brilliant. Everything was well heard on here. The vocals both screaming/hoarse fit in well, the guitar was highly audible, and the drums well meshed in together also. They really did a high quality job on here with the music. Nothing is left out or needs to be fixed. I figure that this band as described has enormous potential and it shines through this album. Really mature musicians even though they're quite new to the melodic death metal genre. Definitely worth checking out for sure.

In summation, I conclude that Thousand Year War has like I said before has enormous potential and it is shown here on this release. I'm hoping that the band would continue to dish out quality music and needs to come out from the underground and be better recognized. If you heard this album and scored it below anything like a 65% out of 100%, then melodic death isn't your forte. This debut shines strong and is amazing as previously mentioned. If you're a melodic death freak like me, then "Tyrants and Men" is a definite worth purchasing. You'll be amazed by the riffs, especially if you're a guitarist like I am.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by popdose

Image

By Dave Steed

Death metal. From Sweden. Yep, you guessed it. It’s the typical Swedish chainsaw sound that defines death metal from that land. I’m sure there are some Swedish death metal bands out there that don’t sound like Entombed and all others that came after them but there are so many that do, that anything really different seems to get lost in the shuffle.

Deadwork is the second full length record from this five-piece band and as usual for the genre, breaks no new ground. But what Swedish death metal does actually have going for it is that the talented bands blend brutality with groove and melody seamlessly to create an album that’s both a headbanger and something you can sing along to at the same time. Daemonicus seems to be one of those bands.

Their sophomore release is chocked full of amazing riffs and memorable grooves. “Embracing Her Remains” is a dark song on the surface but includes a groove that totally invigorates you, while “We Feast On Your Flesh” pounds you over the skull with pure speed. I also learned about Ubo Sathla on this disc (which I assume is a nod to the Clark Ashton Smith deity [though he spells it Ubbo] which is a headless, organless mass that oozes slime as it moves around (“The Hymn Of Ubo Sathla”).

Over the course of 43 minutes and ten tracks, the sound is 100% what you’d expect but this record is so damn catchy that it’s really tough to put down. I need a fucking pit, right now. Right. Now.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.canadianassault.com

Image

By Dale

There was a time from the mid 1990s to the early 2000s that I pretty would have shit on an album like this on principle. *Shakes fist* Do not pollute my beloved death metal with rock ‘n roll you stunned cunts! I guess I have softened somewhat in my old age as it were. That is not to say rocking dm is something I go searching for and about half of the time the result is a mess of train wreck proportions. I must admit that is the feeling I was having a couple songs in on my first listen. But honestly upon repeated listens Rock ‘N Rott is beginning to win me over. Yeah like usual those pesky Finns have a way of working they way underneath your skin like bamboo shoots in a sweaty jungle torture movie scene. Rocking Corpses are a little different than some death rock bands, they really mix the two genres up, with rock coming out on top, but it is heavy. Also the vocals on some songs are growled vocals, some have entirely clean sung vocals and yet other songs have almost a duet mixing of the two. As you may guess much of the lyrics are horror and zombie related, which suits me just fine as saturated as they are I never tire of zombies! Yeah Rock ‘N Rott is some whack shit, but it is some good whacked shit that will have you rocking in the aisles and knocking down bowling pins with severed heads. This is some unique shit, check it out ghouls.

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by http://www.crossfire-metal.de

Image

By Daniel Müller

Erupted from Sweden with "In The Grip Of Chaos" presents their first album. At the sound of the guitars you can hear the origin of the guys immediately.
After the somewhat unnerving intro it really begins. The dee
p growl is rather unusual for Sweden and reminds me a lot of Tom Frost of the American Baphomet, who later took it further under the name Banished. The influences of Cianide and Autopsy cannot be dismissed. Otherwise, we hear the usual Swedish bandwidth: extremely heavy riffs in the best steamroller style, double bass, sluggish stuff, technically adept, but never overly presented, but it's sometimes a little bit faster.
Here Erupted pull all the stops and provide impressive evidence that the young offspring is not tired. Not all are jumping on the trend of increasing the modernization. There are still young metalheads who are willing to keep to the good old traditions. The production is good, bold and transparent, the songs varied and the cover pops quite well. A really good, new death metal release that will certainly get attention!

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.italiadimetallo.it

Image

By Klaus Petrovic

Rhythms tribalissimi for this " Odd Ethics "Ep return to the Pisans Humangled authors until now a demo, another ep, a mini cd and the album " Fractal "of 2010 for the Abyss Records of Indianapolis, an album that had some success abroad, among other things. The band was born in 1994 and was later dissolved to be reborn in 2006, and after several lineup changes, get this new EP thanks to the perseverance of the founder guitarist Luke Scurb .

This EP should take the lead on a new album that will force him to consecrate Humangled , the possibilities are all there, their death metal is one of those that leave their mark thanks to a 'remarkable ability, and quality of the individual components. In fact, although historical influences such as Entombed , Cannibal Corpse and so the boys Tuscan propose their own path to death metal, trying to make your domain with extremes of brutality and doses out of the ordinary. Obviously, these are personal opinions and opinabilissime, but if you happen to see one of their live or to find their cd I in your place I would try to follow them carefully.

The four tracks offered here are better than the initial " Needless of the Blind "which is introduced by a brief intro that devastated the drums for his brutality. Honor the singer Andrew Goreds true prophet and final performer of the music offered here, but all the bands that best satisfies exploiting a production worthy of the name at last. Devastating, the piece will reap victims in every stage that is submitted. The riffs are powerful thanks to successive axes Luke Scurb and Vhell Miscarriage.

Rocky " Skinned, Fell To All "with the battery Fred Valdaster tribalissimo that sets the pace, which is in the melodic guitar riffs, showing the personality of the band.

With " Acrid Smell "you go to throttle double bass, this is death metal nth power, in which, however, does not seem to be perfectly happy but I'm feeling the singer, the song flowing fluid in his arrogance sound built on fast rhythms (also excellent bassist Frank Nichols ). Nothing to complain and spectacular performance of the riff.

It closes with " Deny Your Creed ", which seems to open up melodies less angry, but it is only a moment, in fact it starts great (reminds me of some things Carcass post grind), ultimately a great song.

The conclusions are easy to pull, the Humangled is a great band that absolutely deserves the success on an international scale, so have the band! We look forward to the new album!

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) "Tyrants and Men" DIGI CD review by http://www.skullsnbones.com

Image

By Luther Lazaretto

Melodic Death Metal band Thousand Year War reaches out from the cold lands of Haines, Alaska to deliver a most exciting release "Tyrants and Men" to the metal world. From the start of this release the band unleash some angry riffs that just pummel you throughout the tracks. The anger at society and the political crruption seem to bring out the passion and crunching metal from Thousand Year War. Elements of early style thrash metal and even death metal stand out in influence. There is also that modern touch with the good production behind it that makes Thouisand Year War a great band to get into. Fans of Hatesphere or Detonation can relate to this band very easily. The emotion of head stomping anger is all over "Tyrants and Men" and nothing stops until the end. Sure there are a lot of bands playing the same style and manner as Thousand Year War, but the way these guys play brings out the likeness for me, and I like how they sound. Maybe this isn't the most original release, but the band can play their style very fucking well! Nothing about this release is boring at all, everything from each track makes a person want to go outside and kick sombody's ass! There are ten tracks totaling 40 minutes of Melodic tyranny and fans of the Melodic Death metal genre should enjoy this release very much. All the tracks are worthy of listen, but a couple did catch my attention like "Defiance" and "Open Casket" (not the Death song in 1988 from "Leprosy") Each track has a hard hitting metal madness with speed and ability. A great band to get into for the fans.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) Interview by http://www.daytoncitypaper.com

Image

By Gary Spencer

Legendary underground metal band Radiation Sickness back from the dead

Some bands are meant to stay broken up and left for dead – especially bands who were so underground in the first place that their disappearance may not even have been on many fans’ radars. But the chosen few of those cult underground acts that made such an indelible impact on listeners, both from back in the day and the present, get pumped when they hear the news that one of those bands has finally decided to come back together. Such is the case for Indianapolis old-school extreme metal legends Radiation Sickness, whose members decided to resurrect their multiple-decades-long defunct group and were welcomed back into the arms of metal fans not just in the United States, but around the globe as well.

First formed in the late 1980s, Radiation Sickness quickly built a reputation in the extreme metal underground as one of the first metal bands to purvey the “crossover” style of thrash that was becoming increasingly en vogue and were one of the best of the underground bands blowing out eardrums everywhere they went and putting on a killer live show. The band further cemented their cult following with the “Elvis Ain’t Dead” demo that also quickly became an underground sensation. But soon, tragedy struck when founding member Ryan Rollins committed suicide in 1989. Saddened but undaunted, Radiation Sickness soldiered on, playing every weekend possible and gigging alongside classic extreme metal luminaries such as Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, Suffocation, Repulsion, Immolation and Macabre and even going to Europe to promote their thrash/hardcore/death metal hybrid and gaining new fans all along the way. In 1990, the band dropped the album The Other Me: A Journey into Insanity, which over the years has become a long-sought-out cult classic that was just re-released earlier this year alongside the reunited band’s newest opus, Reflections of a Psychotic Past (Abyss Records) that marks the group’s first studio recording in over 20 years. Radiation Sickness called it quits in 1992 but had a seemingly-random reunion in 2010 for a one-off gig. The fan response was so enthusiastic that vocalist and founding member Doug Palmer decided to keep Radiation Sickness as an active outfit, still thrashing skulls both in the U.S. and beyond. While Radiation Sickness’s music has morphed over time to include elements of death metal, grindcore and crust into their signature crossover thrash style, the band still has the energy and the chops to keep crowds headbanging. I recently spoke with vocalist/lyricist Doug Palmer about the origins of Radiation Sickness and the impetus to keep the outfit alive in this millennium, and he had plenty to say about the band’s past, present and future.

Tell me about the origins of the band … y’know, the who/what/where/when/why/how the band came together.

Radiation Sickness was formed in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1987 by (myself) and Ryan Rollins. Many people seemed to have not even given Indiana a glance when it to came to extreme grind metal (when) Radiation Sickness started making noise in the underground. We recorded the legendary “Elvis ain’t dead” demo (which) used influences from groups such as Napalm Death, Chaos UK, Discharge, Slayer, Cryptic Slaughter and The Accused. -Doug Palmer

What was the impetus behind the formation of Radiation Sickness? Was there any kind of change that the band was/is hoping to instill with its music and/or message(s)?

Forming Radiation Sickness was nothing more than a bunch of strung out teenagers with depression and addiction problems who loved underground metal, punk and crossover. Tape trading was a big part of those days. I was big into crust punk from Englandso that was a big part of who we are. We had a message but things do not change by talking about them. The new lyrics have a much stronger message as I consider myself wiser (now). The music of RS is based on the most evil of all life, things we have seen in real life. Life is a depressing thing. -DP

How did the suicide of founding member Ryan Robbins affect you and the band, both musically and personally?

It screwed a lot of us up for a long time. The music changed, it became all very dark depressing, dwelling on insanity, death, drug abuse – all the dark things in life. Nothing was fun anymore. It was real now. It still sticks with us this day. -DP

Why did the original incarnation of Radiation Sickness disband in 1992? Did you do anything musically between the time of ending the original Radiation Sickness and the band’s reformation in 2010?

Burnt out – just got sick of it. I was drunk, strung out all the time. We had a great record deal at the table (and) great shows set up. Perhaps it is part of my bi-polar disorder and crazy mood swings. I was so far away from music, it was unreal. I was locked up, not in jail but in a world of minivan hell – the real world. I hated it. I sank so far into depression I thought my death was the only way out. -DP

What types of lyrical themes does Radiation Sickness explore, both past and present?

All the dark things people do. The evil side of human life. The deaths we have seen, suicide, insanity – all things I have had to deal with on a first-hand basis. -DP

Tell me about your live show. How is it different than your records?

We play old and new songs we like to play. It is four guys playing their dark soul out for the music they love. You will not be let down from a RS gig. It is real, violent and on the edge of insanity. -DP

Tell me about your newest recording, Reflections of a Psychotic Past.

Fast, brutal music (with) lots of tempo and speed changes – stuff we like to play. I write lyrics all the time, so I always have them on hand when they put new music together. –DP

11. Do you have any plans for a full fledged tour of theU.S.orEurope? Any plans for writing/recording any new material? How long do you see yourself keeping Radiation Sickness going? What does the future hold for Radiation Sickness, generally speaking?

We will record new material that’s a given. Tour Europe? Yes. U.S.? Many tours and one-off shows. -DP

12. Anything else you’d like to say to our readers? Why should they come out to see Radiation Sickness?

They should see us because it is a glimpse into the past when this type of music started. Insanity is what you will get out of the show. A good time that allows you to release your anger. -DP

Radiation Sickness will perform this coming Friday, October 19 at Blind Bob’s, 430 E. Fifth Street. Lysura, King Stench and Skinned Christ are also on the bill. Cover is $6 for patrons 21 and over. Showtime is 9:30 p.m. For more details, please visit http://www.blindbobs.com.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by metaldisciple

Image

By George Washburn

Sweden’s The Gardnerz released their first album (“The System of Nature”) last year, and now they have released a follow up EP called “It All Fades.” These guys play a combination of death and doom metal. What is with the name? Are they trying to make having a green thumb cool? Who knows, but as long as the music is good I do not care.

“It All Fades” may be labeled an EP, but its six tracks clocks in at 36 minutes which is as long or longer than many full albums. I would not go so far as to say I have not heard anything like this before, but I will say I do not hear albums like this one very often. The way they combine the heavy and growling elements of death metal with the slower pace, ponderous riffing and cleaner vocals of doom is very refreshing and I am enjoying it immensely. Listening to just one track does not give you an accurate portrayal of what this band is about. I like that.

Like a box of Cracker Jacks with a prize in the middle, the third song on the EP is an interesting interpretation of Darkthrone’s “Transylvanian Hunger.” The Darkthrone version is of course a classic example of mid-90s Norwegian black metal. If someone asked me what black metal sounded like I could point them to “Transylvanian Hunger” and be sure they were getting the right idea. The Gardnerz version is about as far from black metal as you can get; it sounds acoustic, and the vocals, rather than gravelly black metal screams are the clean and beautiful guest vocals of Paulina Strikavka. Side by side one might not guess that these were the same song. Kudos to the band on having the guts for such a daring cover song.

Overall, “It All Fades” was a very nice surprise. When I have time I fully intend to look up their first album and give it a listen.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by pestwebzine

Image

By Adrian

I thought this is a new band, but theye were actually formed back in 2004. The release of their 2010 demo "Rot.In.Pieces" in 2010 brought them this cool deal with Abyss Records, and here's the fruit of their labour, their debut album. Containing 13 tracks, 7 of them being the 2010 demo, and lasting for a bit more than 40 minutes, "Composition of Flesh" is a 100% Old-School Swedish Death Metal effort. As highlights of their music I could mention the chuggy guitars sound, the very good vocals (even though I think this guy has even more potential) and the dark atmospheres, perfect for Death Metal. Even though most of the time the rhythms are fast, Corrosive Carcass also adds some mid-tempo parts and some slow moments to spice things up a bit. They succeed up to a point, but the only thing this albums lacks of is one or more tracks to stand out and get to be memorable ("Collector" or "The End of Us All" might just prove me wrong though). Otherwise the album is perfect for anyone in search for Old-School Death Metal with that rotten atmospheres this genre was so proud of. Excellent sound, perfect cover artwork, a nice trip back in time.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by Johnny Strömbäck

Image

By Johnny Strömbäck

Malmo Bands monitors fjolärets debut works with a six sounds long ep. Initial "Do not look back" is a dynamic piece of just over seven minutes that offers alit from fast-DEATH reminding guitar scales and melodic plug into leaden verses with death growls and clean vocals. It is a complex song that grows with each listening. Hair in the borderland between doom metal and progressive death metal has Scanians upperbarligen found their niche.
The second exclamation mark is a cover of DARK THRONE'S "Transilvanian hunger" - arrangement where Paulina Strihavkas lonely voice accompanied by clean electric guitar is as beautiful as it is clever. After the rousing "Erasing bad specimen" rounded the album in an excellent way, I note that I Vil hear more of THE GARDNERZ in the future.

Rating: 7

This review was originally written in Swedish and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review in Swedish appears below.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) "The Spirit of Warfare" CD review by http://www.funeralrain.net

Image

By Samuel

Hyperborean are a Swedish band formed in 2000, and the newest addition to the Abyss Records roster. The Spirit of Warfare is their just released debut. My gut instinct is to compare this to Arsis, but I shouldn’t, because I can’t stand Arsis, and I must say, I quite enjoyed this tidy little slab of melodic death/black/power/whatever.
They play, as they state on their myspace, symphonic extreme metal. I was a little reluctant to listen to this, because I was under the impression that this was straight melodeath, which I will admit I am a little prejudiced against. However, in the space of 49 minutes and 19 seconds, the legions of Hyperborean besieged and conquered my ears without mercy.
This isn’t trite wanky crap like Arsis, but a glorious and epic soundscape that blends melodic death metal, black metal, and very tasteful use of symphonic elements (read: not Dimmu Borgir). In fact, the symphonic elements, mainly consisting of occasional piano, are so subtle I’m not sure that “symphonic” is a good label to attach to this band.
As I mentioned above, the press email I received says this band was formed in 2000, and it shows. This music sounds like it took time write, enduring the collective scrutiny of the band many times before being recorded for The Spirit of Warfare. All of the songs sound tight and professional, with absolutely none of the signs of amateurism or immaturity that are sometimes present on a debut album. Most of the songs are pretty long, with 4 around 7 minutes and one above 10 minutes, but they don’t feel like it. The band offer enough variation to keep the listener captivated, and the beautiful thing about that is they do it without one dimensional shredding solos or unnecessary vain technicality. The mood evoked changes throughout the album, but as a whole the Spirit of Warfare captures a feeling of oncoming battle and inevitable triumph, of burning cities and banners fluttering in the wind above fields of carnage. Noble riffs gallop forward over tense, dramatic drumming, punctuated by a raspy and passionate yet very controlled vocals delivery.
I’d say this is a must have for fans of melodic death or black metal, perhaps for someone who likes Dissection or At The Gates. Stand out tracks are “Channeling the Spirit of Warfare” and “The Last Stand of Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae”. My applause gentlemen, you’ve earned 7.5/10, and I think someone with more a taste for the melodic would rate this as high as a 9/10.
