AxisOfMetal.com Debuts New Track From The Gardnerz - "Don't Look Back"

Image

AxisOfMetal.com has teamed with Abyss Records and Swedish death/doom metal outfit The Gardnerz to debut a brand new track off the band's forthcoming mini-album, It All Fades.

The track, entitled "Don't Look Back," is being called a "a seven-minute doomy-death attack which will punish your psyche..." by Axis Of Metal. Members of The Gardnerz had the following to say about the song, "We have chosen the song "Don't Look Back" to be the first song out of this new recording to be available to the public eye (or ear in this case) because it sets a good tone for the rest of the mini album," said Bassist Francisco Martín.

"This time around the songs are a bit slower and darker than on The System Of Nature (the band's debut), we tried to continue on the path we have chosen. We have found our niche and have no reason to stray, so if you liked our first release you will like It All Fades as well. This time it was a bit more of a group effort and I think that made the songs stronger," added guitarist Wilhelm Lindh.
Check out the exclusive stream of "Don't Look Back" at this location: http://axisofmetal.com/2012/08/axis-of- ... -gardnerz/

It All Fades is coming this Fall on Abyss Records.

Drummer Vedran Benčić recorded his tracks at Armageddon studio in Osijek Croatia. Guitarist Wilhelm and bassist Francisco returned to Funky Cat Studio in Landskrona Sweden, where The System of Nature was recorded, to lay down their parts. Vocals were tracked by Niclas Ankarbranth at Ninja Studios in Malmö Sweden.

The System Of Nature is currently streaming in its entirety at http://www.TheGardnerz.com and is still available for purchase through Abyss Records.

THE GARDNERZ is a doomy death metal band from the south of Sweden, THE GARDNERZ was formed in the middle of 2008 by Wilhelm and in late 2008 Francisco joined the band and the debut album started to take shape. A longtime friend of Francisco, Juan Pablo was recruited to do the drums and after a long time of searching for a vocalist Niclas stepped in to the picture. THE GARDNERZ inked a deal with Abyss Records in late 2010 The band's debut album, The System Of Nature, is now out on digipack CD through Abyss Records, on LP through Mechanix Records and digital download through Digmetalworld. Boosted by the tremendous response from the debut album the band started working on new material. In 2011a new drummer, Vedran Benčić, was recruited and after a few months of rehearsing the new songs the band decided to record a Ep. The recording started in early 2012 and yielded the It All Fades Mini Album containing six doom and death filed tracks.
The Gardnerz - A doom/death metal hybrid with allot of twists and turns that will keep you on your toes, not your garden variety band. Blending slow and heavy riffs with melodies distorted and clean.Taking influences from all over the musical spectra, but keeping a solid metal foundation. Mixing technicality with simplicity to get as varied music as possible.

Abyss Records To Release DESULTOR's Masters of Hate On Vinyl

Image

On August 28th, Abyss Records will issue the vinyl edition of Masters of Hate from Sweden's DESULTOR. Originally released in March of this year on CD, DESULTOR's debut full-length challenged all preconceived notions of what Swedish death metal should be. The vinyl release comes in two editions:

The "Die-Hard" Version - Limited to 100 hand-numbered copies on 180 gram transparent red vinyl. Includes high gloss jacket w/ two-sided color insert, exclusive embroidered patch, logo vinyl sticker and button.

The Standard Version - Limited to 400 hand-numbered copies on 180 gram transparent red vinyl. Includes high gloss jacket w/ two-sided color insert and logo vinyl sticker.

Pre-orders are now being accepted at http://www.officialabyssrecords.com

Image

Stockholm-based progressive Swedeth extremists DESULTOR released Masters of Hate on March 20th via cult US death metal label Abyss Records. Formed in 2007, the duo of guitarist/vocalist Markus Joha and drummer Michael Ibrahim rapidly evolved over the course of two demos into the boundary-pushing and deadly outfit they are today. Dubbed "Murder Metal," DESULTOR is unique as they are extreme. This is Swedish metal supreme. Masters of Hate was recorded and mastered by Sverker Widgren at Sweden's Necromorbus Studios.

DESULTOR is:

Markus Joha - Guitar and vocals.

Michael Ibrahim - Drums

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.eraskor.com

Image

By Ermanno Martignano

Humangled , a band that actually did not know and am very pleased to discover that is present in the scene since the late nineties.

After 2 demos, an EP and a full leght out a couple of years ago, these guys are back with a new ep Tuscan respectable. Their death metal seems to draw pride from the American style impact, macabre and grotesque with a good dose of melody Swedish filter.

Four tracks of excellent technical metal that prefers more time clocked as fast, which makes the whole dynamic range in its assimilation and an aura of confusion and tension of a typical horror film thriller with Rob Zombie.

The band seems indeed to estimate the American scene in every way from the beginning using the propi names in English and accounting for the Abyss Records.

An ep we are sure of your hi-fi welcome with open arms!

Rating: 75/100

Iceland's ANGIST Signs To Abyss Records

Icelandic extreme death metal act ANGIST has signed with Abyss Records. The band's self-released five-track EP, Circle of Suffering, was made available for the first time in North America by Abyss Records this summer and can be purchased at http://www.officialabyssrecords.com. Circle of Suffering was recorded, mixed & mastered by Wann at Emissary Studio. Abyss Records will release the band's full-length debut in the near future.

Live footage of the band playing "Death Incarnate" has been posted at this location: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17g7zyvw ... e=youtu.be

Circle of Suffering Artwork & Track List:

1. Circle Of Suffering
2. Godless
3. Silence
4. Unwelcome Thoughts
5. Death Incarnate

"Petrifyingly powerful, their relentless, atmosphere-steeped and blackened thrust should take its rightful place amongst DM's kvlt elite." -Metal Hammer Magazine

"This is Angist. It's dark, thrashy, black metal and it's bloody brilliant. You will struggle not to headbang to their music" - ThrashHits.com

From Reykjavík, Iceland hails the death metal quartet Angist. Formed in 2009 by vocalist/guitarist Edda Óskarsdóttir and guitarist Gyða Þorvaldsdóttir with Halli, Edda's brother later joining as the band's bassist player. Angist has seen a revolving door of dummers before settling on current skin basher Tumi Gíslason.

Angist released their two song demo in summer 2010 and, within a year they had been given the opportunity to play several high profile shows such as Iceland Airwaves, opening act for Heaven Shall Burn and L'esprit du Clan. Angist placed second in the Wacken Metal Battle (Icelandic log). Many interviews and reviews in magazines, newspapers, webzines and radio followed and the 2011 ended with the release of Angist's EP, Circle of Suffering. The band toured around France as an opening act for L'esprit du Clan in support of the EP.
2012 so far has been no less of a success with Angist performing at Eistnaflug Festival to a highly receptive crowd as well as supporting Beneath (Unique Leader) at their CD release show. The high point so far, signing a record deal with US-based label Abyss Records for the release of Angist's debut album.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

Nell'inflazionato music market often sprout as EP or have their reason to exist. For Humangled was perhaps time to beat a shot and give news updates of itself, given the two years elapsed from the album "Fractal". Through Abyss Records, the band Tuscany offers four pieces, for a total of almost fifteen minutes of death metal riffs from strong but well-defined path to enable it to deliver melodies. Deathers The Italians are not linked to the Swedish melodic death metal, their gender seems to devote himself mainly to the death 'n roll. "Skinned, to Feel All" is sister to the pieces of the album "Swansong" by Carcass, the opener "Needless of the Blind" is a compromise between a death metal riffing and a marked almost thrash metal. "Smells Acrid" was the song most evil and tenacious, with inserts in mid tempo reminiscent of Death. "Deny Your Creed" is last song, last synthesis with powerful riffs and full of sliding notes exquisitely. Luke Scrub leaves some doubts because one side is dynamic and skillful in the alternation between the growling and screaming, but does not always reveal the correct interpretation of aggressive charge and, consequently resulting dish. Overall "Odd Ethics" is well produced and now will create the right expectation for a future and a new test record.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by metalshockfinland

Image

By David Pearce

Humangled is a death metal band from Pisa (Italy) born from the cyber-grind duo of Putrid Sequence (“Inside Reeking Organs“, 1994). After having released “Anatomic Butchery” (1996) demo tape, which received very good reviews from the beginning on magazines, the band disbanded for personal reasons and remained inactive until December, 2006, when the duo Goreds / Scurb reassembled. In 2010 Humangled signed with Abyss Records from Indianapolis (USA) to release their debut album “Fractal” on 31st May. Production/Mixing/Mastering was made by Dan Swano @ Unisound Studios (SWE), for the new EP titled “Odd Ethics” released May 2012.

The Ep starts off with Intro Needles Of The Blind the song starts off with what sounds like doctors talking about a patient in a hospital then all of a sudden it powers into a heavy guitar riff full of energy then the vocals come in gruff and harsh but the guitar work is very good some really heavy riffs throughout the song. The vocals are very gruff and harsh but they go well with the guitars, the drums pounding out the rhythm behind keeps the tempo perfectly. The song gets my head nodding from the first bars of the guitars and kept it going throughout good start to the Ep. The second song is Skinned, To Feel All starts off with another powerful guitar riff, and the vocals are dark and harsh but are well really well done. The outstanding point is the guitar work it is outstanding they are playing at such speed but hitting every note perfectly and the drums keeping up the same tempo is a real eye opener. But it is another good hard heavy song and sung perfectly. The third song on the Ep is Smells Acrid again it starts with another powerful but twin guitar assault which I love hearing it give a song a real edge hearing that type of guitar work. The vocals are again harsh but very well executed and the pounding of the drums again keeping the tempo right where it should be high intensity. So far the Ep has been of the highest order the last song on the Ep is Deny Your Creed which starts off with the drums and the guitars together then the guitars take over with a cracking riff bit later the vocals come in harsh but perfectly done. The guitar work on this song has been full of high intensity with no time to catch your breath as it steams through the riffs at break neck speed. The vocals again have been really well executed with no let-up in determination to make your ears bleed with pleasure. This is a really good song to end the Ep on.

Overall

Overall this Ep has been a full on assault to my ear drums full of break neck speed guitar riffs, harsh vocals that would make you stand up and listen and finally the high intensity pounding drums which kept the tempo of the song to perfection. This Ep got my head nodding from the first bars of the first song to the ending of the last song normally I don’t listen to this type of Metal but I really enjoyed this Ep and I am looking forward to hearing a lot more from these guys in the future.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.metal.de

Image

By Eckart Maronde

When I was recently in the summer in Sweden, I received a mysterious phone call a bit suppressed on my cell phone number, noise on the line. A sonorous, deep voice announced to me that would be the evening passed in a former warehouse on the outskirts of Hofors the junior Deather CORROSIVE CARCASS an ultra-secret gig, and I just watch what is absolutely would have, would finally it has been about the hottest shit ages act. Granted, it all sounded richly obscure, and I really wanted to make just a few days off in Noisy Village, Sweden. But ... what you do not everything dearest to his hobby, if there is something new to discover? So I went on my way and went on back roads and gravel roads to the said industrial area, which is in the upcoming Twilight deposed only dimly on the horizon. The sky was darkened by the gathering clouds, and occasionally I heard in the forest near the reputation of a Kauzes. Of music but nothing was heard, and certainly not death metal. Too bad, nothing arrived. As I already wanted to return disappointed for my SUV, I heard a rustling in the bushes and harsh creak. - Fearless I pull out the flashlight and shine into the bushes. A moldy gleaming pair of eyes looking at me, the one - let's say - is undead, then I noticed the lifeless body before him, the huge pool of blood where I stand. It dawns on me that the pair of eyes must include Jonathan Sjöblom, the singer of the Swedish troops, for which I am ever got here. Suddenly he opens his mouth, a white liquid runs down the corners of the mouth, and then he brings forth some gasping words: "The flesh," he whispers to me, "is not enough." The next moment I feel a thump on the back of my head ... The nurses at the hospital told me that I had been three days bewusslos. In what must have happened, I remember only vaguely. Suddenly I realize that the doc is on my sick bed and asks me, but I do not get his words: but that he speaks English, I can find. With some derision in his voice he barks to meet me two words: "Necrotising fasciitis". Argh! Of this disease I have ever heard, and the memory it does not exactly put me in a trance. Then he babbles of "Awesome Nuclear Power." Whether I should probably be X-rayed? Instead, he turns a ghetto blaster, standing on the window sill on. "Corrosive Carcass!" he whispers to me, and now I recognize the deep, sonorous voice. He was, therefore, who had called me a few days ago ... The next forty-one minutes go by quickly, but drone on in my head, especially the fast D-beat-influenced percussion and primitive, and yet so skillful guitar riffs. Grinding, whirring, and occasionally even a harmony lead. No question, that's pretty appealing Swedish Death Metal, quite consistently applied, without gimmicks, no solos, without too many tunes. The striking feature of CORROSIVE CARCASS is the voice of Jonathan Sjöblom, this mocking hervorgebellte grunts, on the one hand, so threatening near and through the Hall yet so elusive sounds. has packed the whole thing into a sound character, on the one hand the old-school feeling preserves and the other neatly pressed to their ears. And just like the excessive use of reverb to me very well - this all sounds kind of sick. The songs rarely last longer than three minutes, and sometimes come to the point quickly. Certainly, some in one or another high point are going to want more, but who is at AUTOPSY and early Swedish Death is, look here. After the bouncer, "The End Of Us All" I lose again the consciousness, but in my subconscious echoes the memory on "Composition of Flesh" by and developed a strange momentum. "The flesh," I whispered to Jonathan Sjöblom, "is not enough. Over and over again.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by ripplemusic

Image

By ODIN

This EP is short and sweet, probably not more than 15 or 16 minutes, so I’ll just cut to the chase as well. I really, really dig this. Humangled is a band from Pisa, Italy (as in, I’m assuming, Leaning Tower Of), who have been active off and on since 1996. From the bio I read mostly off. Which is a shame because this release is really good. I really wish there was more of it. I’m really saying really a lot.

The EP comprises just 4 tracks, and they are very interesting. I know many of you like to have your metal jammed into some sub-genre, but Humangled really doesn’t allow for that. If I had to call them anything, it’d be melodic death, but that doesn’t do justice to what they are laying down. There are some traces of 90’s alterna-metal, Helmet actually came to mind at times, as well as just some solid heavy rock. Whatever the case, it’s an interesting blend and one that I would like to hear a lot more of. Which means I’ll be checking out the back catalog.

A lot of metal bands have the “good cop, bad cop” vocals going. These guys seem to have the “bad cop, fucking nightmare cop” formula. Which is kinda cool, again because you don’t hear anyone else doing that. Just another little twist that caught my attention.

This is very well written music. It skips around a little bit like Dillinger Escape Plan, but not in the jarring way that those guys do it that always makes me want to find them and punch them. But it is not music that just plods along at the same tempo and the same time signature and the same blah, blah, blah, either. This is music that is interesting and is going somewhere and definitely needs to be heard. So check it out and you can thank me later.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.rawnervezine.co.uk

Image

By Martin Harris

A tale of two genres as death metal and crossover meet, the new material is punishing promising death metal

The Abyss records roster is packed with top quality bands covering a myriad of styles in extreme metal. Astonishingly Radiation Sickness was formed in 1987 and was really spawned at the time when crossover was the new thing thrash, with a plethora of bands jumping the thrash ship in favour of the trendier crossover style. A pack of demos, EPs and splits between 1988 and 1990 ensued, marred by the suicide of founder Ryan Rollins to depression in 1989, but still managing to continue with new members until the band folded in 1992. Fast forward 18 years and RS reformed in 2010 for a reunion show, which must have gone down well with the result being a new album some 20 years on from their last output. The only original band member is Doug Palmer on vocals with new talent being added for the recording of “Reflections Of A Psychotic Past” an album that is really split into two sections, the first being seven new songs that make up the album itself plus a remastered version of the bands “The Other Me - A Journey Into Insanity” EP from 1990.

So onto the new stuff which is brutal and grizzled in sound and kicks off with the title track which clocks in at less than 90 seconds. The vocals have that Martin Van Drunen (Asphyx) terror about their tone, not quite screamed but enough power and ferocity to melt steel. I’m never quite certain that sound samples work in between songs, the last album I liked that did this well was Aborted’s “Engineering The Dead” but this is just a personal preference as “Demented Love Song 2” is grind like initially and drops momentarily to a Slayer riff and the first signs of the bands roots appear by way of a thrash like structure and beat plus a more shouted vocal line. The thrash tag is lost on “Tripping In The Seas Of Madness” which demonstrates a nice catchy vibe and straight pummelling death metal riff and blast. “Graveside View” offers more of the grind I hinted at earlier but this is far from true grind, more to do with the way the song sounds, which on the drum sound borders that clanging snare I find annoying, though I’m being super critical here.

“Erif Ti Pu” is Obituary like death metal, though with blast episodes added for that little bit of extra ferocity. I do wonder when bands have been absent from the scene whether they keep up with what is happening or has happened, as the similarities to other acts is always going to be prevalent whether the band realises it or not. As I said previously this album is a case of two halves with “Erif Ti Pu” ending the new songs and shifting the album into the 1990 release of “The Other Me - A Journey Into Insanity” EP which has been remastered for inclusion here. Now not having heard the bands early days and with this being remastered I can’t compare how the two differ or are similar but one thing is for sure this is not death metal.

Crossover music in the mid 80s was a bit of bugbear with me as it tried to hold onto the thrash audience but gain new fans from the massive hardcore scene that was around from the US, as opposed to the Euro hardcore variety which was far more coarse and more akin to punk and crust, than purist hardcore. In terms of old 80s hardcore I certainly loved the scene, invested in a number of releases and focussed my attention on bands like Attitude Adjustment, Crumbsuckers, The Accüsed, Minor Threat, Cryptic Slaughter to name the major protagonists of the time. Listening to this EP and it is clear that Radiation Sickness was up there with the best of them, with copious amount of bass lines being linked together by short hardcore, ok crossover, riff styles. The vocals were manic, but perfect for the chaotic undertone on the songs. The bass work is very like DRI on their sell out “Crossover” album, though the short blast insertions used are very like the awesome Cryptic Slaughter. Any of the tunes can be compared to the forerunners of the scene back then with “Ruthless” and “Man Made Production” possessing hardcore insanity and thrash riffing complexity equally, which is no easy task. “No Future” has that ominous slow start before the bruising bass hook and subsequent maniacal drum work. “Escape To Insanity” actually starts like Suicidal’s “Institutionalized” song from the self titled debut, even the spoken vocal style is close, but as it progresses I am reminded of yet another nutcase band, but this time from Germany the short lived Chronical Diarrhoea, yes I am being serious, check them out on Metal Archives, (the “Salomo Says” album is mental).

I am faced with a dilemma at this point because the two separate components that make up “Reflections Of A Psychotic Past” are so different I am finding myself drawn more to the older material than the new stuff due to my past life affectations with hardcore. Aside of my own dilemma the music on offer is a before and after and the after should be the focus and for that the release is strong with plenty of creativity displayed that hold steadfast for the next release which won’t be too long hopefully. I wonder if the band will be playing the old stuff with the death metal material live, now that is something I would like watch.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.rawnervezine.co.uk

Image

By Martin Harris

Horror filled death metal; bereft of sympathy, creating gargantuan levels of sufferance

One look at the biog info and the first question I ask myself is why has it taken so long for this band to get out a full length after forming in 2004, and releasing one demo in 2010. Be that as it may, the wait has been worth it as Sweden’s Corrosive Carcass churn out visceral death metal that isn’t quite your usual take on the Swedeath sub-genre, instead opting for a grittier in your face guitar sound that could sever arteries. Typically the band has a no frills approach to their songs, with guttural stomach churning vocals, a rhythm section that could upend a battle ship and riffs that will scare you shitless. The bass lines sound very grind like to these weathered ears which is a good thing and is one of a few things that make Corrosive Carcass a bit different to your usual filthy Swedish death metal.

The tunes are fairly short overall, as they should be, and burst into life with “The Flesh Is Not Enough”, a grinding fuzz ball barbed wire tune, that wraps around your face and tightens into a life asphyxiating knot. The opening riff on “Self Mutilation” is caustic, saturating the listener in bubbling acidic wrath, as my first point of difference is the guitar sound which reminds me of the debut Bloodfeast album (“Kill For Pleasure”), the tone is incredibly sharp but with clarity in delivery that will slice your ears off then tear at your ear drums. A dark, oppressive riff begins as, like I said previously, the bass sounds very grind like, not fast, just the way it is played, as though the strings are covered in bitumen. The increasing cymbal smash is also very grind like and catapults the song into inhuman bedlam. There is a lingering festering quality about this song that cloys at you with tendrils laced with toxin. “Necrotizing Fasciitis” has more grind qualities though without the blasting, preferring to slaughter the unexpected with mountainous double kick and snare flailing. My second point of difference is the way the band switches the riffs and flow of the songs almost tangentially with very little notice, a facet that is acutely brave but works incredibly well.

More doom like sonic barbarity appears on “Awesome Nuclear Power”, with a rumbling bass preceding a monumental chainsaw riff, which reads as how to play chainsaw for dummies. The riff really is cracking and resonates deeply within the memory. There is no subtlety on “Twist Of A Knife” or “Chainsaw Dissection” the disembowelling speed is brutalising efficient and reminds me of Cardiac Arrest’s death metal anarchy. Third and final point of difference is the introduction of doom like passages to get the songs either underway or to interrupt them, the effect creates a ghastly nightmarish assault on “Collector”, with its Sabbath like bass and a guitar hook that is grisly but catchy. The short but sporadically violent “Dawning Death” is evil, like an axe wielding maniac hiding in the closet, ready to attack at the right moment, which it does with devastating precision.

The album ends with an epic, night terror of a song that clocks in at nearly eight minutes. Expectations of sprawling doom death aren’t too far off the mark, when it starts with a surprisingly catchy riff and melody, a term I use loosely obviously here. The tune plods along nicely grasping at unsuspecting listeners with those tendrils again, but this time covered with viscous claws that impale the listener into submission. The pace steadily increases as it gathers momentum, ready for the lead solo, as this tune has signs of Norway’s Fester from the early 90s. The song ends with a soft haunting guitar piece as though you’ve just woke up from that night terror, sweating, gasping for air with your bone dry mouth craving sustenance only for you to choke on bitter froth.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.bandstribe.it

Image

By Enrico Scarpettella

As announced on our website, comes a new EP of violent Humangled, proposed by the American Italian band Abyss Records. After years of lineup changes, pauses and starts, "Odd Ethics" is the second official release with the new training program, after the debut-album "Fractal", of good standing for the kind proposed. The coordinates of the band remain strong on a death metal classic, with a few melodic and free of frills, not for this, however, lacks the technique in this record and it shows in deathsters Italian 4-track proposals, full of pauses, sudden changes intessiture and interesting rhythmic guitar, never an end in themselves, but well-centered arrangements. 4 The proposed pieces leave few alternatives, if not define "a blow" itself: since dall'opener "Needles Of The Blind", the rhythmic and sustained themes are heavy and uncompromising, with vocal lines that remain between the growling and screaming. We can say that "Odd Ethics" stands as a record "out of the norm", because no matter Humangled to ride the wave of new genres such as has happened, however, many other bands that come from their own background: for this , advice nostalgic canon Death of paying attention to this band, which will satisfy the needs of this segment of the public.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by rockarollazine

Image

By Javier Salaverry

With almost ten years of existence, Eternal Helcaraxe launches its length debut, "Against all odds" under seal Abyss Records. This Irish quartet (Praetorian on guitar and vocals, Maulgrim on guitar, Thule on bass, and Tyrith on drums), released in 2008 their first demo ("palestine kingdom"), and in 2010 their first EP ("To whatever end") and then reach a contract with the mentioned label. Eternal Helcaraxe defines his music as "epic black metal," right definition if we stick with dark topics the band is hermetic in his lyrics, full of references to paganism and Celtic myths, and the merely instruments proposed by the quartet. A first hearing, it is possible to differentiate some influences from Immortal and Battory mainly by the tendency to structure the songs on the basis of fast riffs, complex and convoluted, but in any case difficult to encapsulate because Eternal Helcaraxe not afraid to venture to land more melodic and bombastic, and this was compounded by the almost operatic variants lyrical passages, mainly by the performance of Praetorian vocalist, who at times sings in a clear and melodic, then become brutal and aggressive . There is no denying the technical capacity of these Irish, who in addition to the above, manage for adding the album a touch of accessibility suggestive and attractive, but without losing his aggressiveness. Gentlemen, the black metal is not my favorite styles, but "Against All Odds" won the 50 minutes that were not enough hard disk. Recommended.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.brutalism.com

Image

By devilmetal747

'Masters Of Hate' is the debut offering from Swedish duo Desultor. Right from the start one can tell it isn't going to be an 'average' album. After a long symphonic introduction to sink it, "Black Monday" kicks off the album with what sounds like a heavy Thrash based sound but with lots of technical and complex moments involved. Then the singing comes in- yes that's right- singing. No snarling or a raspy bark. Clean, almost Prog Metal based singing. On the one hand it may annoy those who are used to Thrash groups like Slayer or hybrids like Dead To This World because they think the singing takes away from the aggressive nature of the muisc. But, with how insane the guitars and drums are sounding here, the singing actually helps out a lot, especially when delivering the various chapters of the story here. "Another World" is a fine example of this.

Of course, there are some screams/ shouts here and there on a track like "Division Insane," but they are only for brief moments as everything just pummels along with no pause or intent of stopping. The chorus sections are clean, but for most who have to have their aggressive vocal focus this track should certainly appeal to them. "Masters Of Pain" features some of the fastest drumming- everything seems to go by like a blur with this track despite that it is not short. Only the interludes give the music any calm, though some may say that 'Chapter II' is a bit more entertaining for the closing guitar section; the outro and intro just sound like something is playing around with a synth and while it is spooky, sounds far too simple when compared to the rest of the technical glory of the other tracks. 'Masters...' is a bit difficult to wrap one's head around if they are used to just basic chugging, but for those seeking something more progressive while not being too jarring on the 'stop n' go' measure, then Desultor definitely did something right when it came to creating thoughtful, entertaining music that has a direct focus while still remaining Thrash.

ANGIST (Iceland) "Circle of Suffering" CD EP review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Sergio Fernandez

Even without an LP under his belt, ANGIST Icelanders have demonstrated through their demo in 2010 and his latest EP titled "Circle of Suffering" you are a band to be reckoned within the European extreme scene. ANGIST account in his training with a couple of women among which the vocalist Edda Tegeder Óskarsdóttir with her powerful throaty voice, while also showing some versatility across different records.

The variety is also apparent in the five compositions that make up the EP, as brutal fast find parts that tear your ears with a battery hellish riffs and a series of serious or half-times dense Doom-style metal. All this combined makes this "Circle of Suffering" is a material that deserves to be heard by any self-respecting follower end, as it contains all the elements needed to make some good songs, coupled with a sober and perfect execution will improve benefits cuts.

"Circle of Suffering" is pure uncompromising death metal that will shatter the neck to the sound of songs like "Godless" or "Death Incarnate".

Rating: 8.5/10

This is the new production of a not too old Italian death metal band (but very experienced) which has been undervalued since 1997, and I think this is the time for their rising. Definitely, they don’t play something I hadn’t heard before, but they do a very aggressive melodic death metal, and your attention will be caught immediately. Again, is a band which bases its music around guitar riffs and no matter how many times we’ve heard this hard core stuff blended with death metal stench, I think is properly the aura of the aggressiveness what it counts. Only four tracks full of aggression, excellent guitar technique and some winks to heavy metal. The voice is corrosive, as Andrew Goreds seems to have a much matured style, you know, this strong growling without forcing the throat and pronunciation correctly. I liked this experienced touch they do on track “Smells Acrid”, a totally death metal stench with putrid and overweighed guitar riffs, and excellent tempo changes. Also I liked the thrash metal touch they gave on track “Deny your Greed”, very dynamic riffs and fresh structures. This is a cool addition to your underground Italian death metal collection.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) Interview and "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by thegrimtower

Image

By Eric May

THE INTERVIEW

First of all, gentlemen - Thanks for making something that's both unique and interesting. As a reviewer, I'm used to hearing plenty of music that sounds roundabout the same. What inspired you gentlemen to mix blues, rock and death metal together?

Thank you sir for your kind words. These are all music types that we really enjoy listening to. So it was really natural for us to mix them together. And I really wanted to hear something like this, and since there weren't that many bands around doing this kind of thing, we decided to make one ourselves.

I noticed that the concept of the album was about the life of a zombie. Have you heard about the so-called "zombie attacks" here in the states? If there was an actual zombie apocalypse, what would you do?

Yeah we heard about that crazy face-eating incident in Miami at least. I think I heard that the guy was on some new drug or something, those can make you do crazy shit. If there has been others I haven't heard. If I got a chance to live through a zombie apocalypse I think I would do the "Dawn of the Dead -thing". You know, living in a shopping mall where there's a lot of stuff to eat and entertain yourself with.

What would you do if you were actually one of the living dead?

Eat some brrraaains! I thought about this when I wrote the lyrics for "Rock 'n' Rott" so you can check more precise answer from the album.

What bands/albums have inspired you the most?

There's so many so it's pretty hard to name some that have inspired the most.. I think all good music you hear leave something and affect the music you make. Musical inspirations for Rocking Corpses are obviously death metal and rock bands like Autopsy, Motorhead, Macabre, Entombed, Necrophagia with many blues artist aswell. I really wanted to do this kind of horror story album 'cause I've always been a huge King Diamond fan and "Them" made an everlasting impression on me more than 20 years ago. It was really nice to see that the man is still going strong at this year's Hellfest.

What horror films are your favorite? Please describe a few, if you will.

My favourite genres in horror are zombie and werewolf movies but in the end I like them all. Some of my all time favourites are Evil Dead, the first Texas Chainsaw and Fulci's Zombie from 1979. I don't think I have to describe any of these to anyone reading this interview. And if I had to, you should ask yourself 'what's wrong with me?'. And maybe go watch Twilight again.

How did the name of the band come about?

The name actually came before I had any music done. When I figured out what kind of music it would be, the name kind of came instantly.

What do you think about sites like bandcamp, that let users "name their own price" on albums? Do you think this is the future, especially for lesser known bands?

For smaller bands I don't think the point is ever on the price of the music. It's great that there are this kind of sites but I don't really think about how to get as much money from the music as possible. I mean it's great if you can get something, but the point should be in enjoying making and playing music. There's nothing like blasting some great riffs with your friends at the rehearsal place. When making music becomes something else and not fun anymore, I'm out.

How do you feel about the state of music in 2012?

I think it's great. I understand that some people think everything was better in the 90's with Metal / Rock 'n' Roll and now it's just Metalcore / Rap 'n' Crap. There are a lot of good bands coming out, you just have to find them and filter all the shit out. Don't follow the big industry products but see if there's some good things on smaller labels or just independently releasing music online or offline. Now there's just much more shit you have to go throught to find the tasty brraaains.

Finally, if an apocalyptic scenario occurred; like a solar flare that knocked out all of the planet's electricity for months, for example - what would you do?

No electricity, no problem. Here in Finland we live very much in the woods anyway, so I guess it would be easier than in big necropolises. Actually that would be a nice escape from all the technology we have grown to be so dependent on. Back to the basics.

Eagerly awaiting the (zombie) apocalypse:

-Tony D.K.-

THE REVIEW

This Finnish death n' roll (and blues) act consists of just two men, Tony D.K. and Leper Laze. There's a man on the kit, but he's not credited. However, the two credited musicians both take on vocal and guitar duties. You'll at times hear them duet.

One of the guys likes to growl, and at times this can become very deathy, and other times it can be more of a cleaner, blues n' roll sound. That's because the other guy likes to sing. Of course the fellow that likes to sing is a hit or miss, and on some songs like "Up From The Grave 3:53" he hits the vocals hard. But on some other songs like "925 4:35" he can sound like he's in an awful 80's rock cover band.

But you might be surprised to find that most of this disc is seeped in the gore and grime of death metal, even if it lacks the bludgeoning drums that you'd expect. At any rate, this disc is certainly a different kind of beast; like the kind you'd expect to rise out of a Finland swamp. Death and blues is the best way to explain this one, and if you're not ready for it, I can completely understand. But every once in a while a disc comes along that really leaves a mark on me, and this release did just that.

It chronicles the life of a zombie, and I'm not sure if anyone's done that yet - but the growls are strong, the riffs are catchy, the solos are great when used, different approaches are tried to each of the songs, and the whole thing's really groovy. But I could care less for some of the clean vocals on this one, and definitely insist that you listen to some tracks before you buy it, because the clean vocals might not be your cup of tea. They would be my only qualm with this disc.

Nevertheless, I'm sure you'll find something here to like. Plus, as the interview mentions, these guys were just happy to put this thing out and enjoyed making the music. They're not even worried about the money. But it still wouldn't hurt to throw them a few bones for it.

Highlights: Up From The Grave, Necropolis, For Better Or Worse, Take A Whiskey, Rocking Corpses, In The Dead Of The Night, Necrophiliacs

ANGIST (Iceland) "Circle of Suffering" CD EP review by fromthedustreturned

Image

By autothrall

Angist is one of a number of promising Icelandic death metal acts to emerge in recent years, alongside Beneath and Ophidian I (in fact, the drummer of the latter is currently performing in this group), but by comparison, they've got a slightly more atmospheric and old school aesthetic about their writing which brings in 90s influences as broad as Immolation, Morbid Angel, old Suffocation, and even Human-era Death (what with all the textured, melodic tremolo picking they use as a main ingredient). Perhaps even a hint of Norwegians Molested, though this material isn't quite so unnerving and dissonant. While I think it would be a mistake to dub the band 'black metal' in any strict sense of the genre, I feel like you also get a mild taste of that inspiration in spots throughout the EP; yet, for myself, the biggest boon to Circle of Suffering was how it threads its resonant atmosphere over the bedrock of thrusted tremolo riffs and bludgeoning, dark grooves.

Granted, I did not find that the actual riffs themselves were all that strong, if only because we've heard these sorts of patterns countless times before. Angist does not exactly configure its note progressions into highly memorable sequences, but they are least performed with competence, and there is variety if one is willing to capitulate to the album's savagery, as with "Death Incarnate", a song that rifles through much of the band's stylistic range without sacrificing its satisfactory, gruesome momentum. Vocalist/guitarist Edda Tegeder Óskarsdóttir belches out a consistent death metal guttural, broad and bloody, her inflection seemingly evolved from the inspirations of forebears like Karl Willetts and Martin van Drunen. The vocals are often a fraction monotonous, but this can be forgiven to some extent due to their contrasted resonance over the thinner riff structures, and the fact that she's also busy PLAYING those riffs while she growls. Also I'd point out that the drums feel great here, never too polished like on a technical death record, but voluminous and crashing with a sort of live sensibility, and they lend a particular desperation to the guitars that helps darken the entire experience.

The song which stood out to me most here was "Silence", a slower, moody number which developed nicely into some haunted, melodic guitar lines cast out above the drudging undertow. It's simply more fulfilling and effective than the others, which more or less follow samey contours, even if those involve an appreciable dynamic range unto themselves. Most importantly, it's evidence that the band knows not to repeat itself unto monotony, and gives me hope that a full-length, which will give the band a lot more time to explore, will see even further experimentation and atmospheric embellishment. As it stands, Circle of Suffering was a decent recording, in both tone and execution. Angist has wisely eschewed the trends of ultra-atmospheric cavern death/doom and Swedish cloning that are so prevalent in today's scene. What they offer is something less common, and while few out of this particular set of songs were able to captivate me for more than a few spins, I think all the pieces are in place here to rain great annihilation upon death mavens in coming years. I doubt this is the last I'll hear of Angist, and for what it's worth, I will be listening.

Verdict: Indifference [6.75/10]

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By hongrui

Formed all the way back in 1987, Radiation Sickness took a rather long hiatus after numerous split releases in 1990, before coming back together once again in 2010. This year finally sees the band releasing their debut full length album in the form of Reflections of a Psychotic Past, which not only contains 7 brand new tracks but also 12 tracks that were on their 1990 EP, The Other Me. Fresh back from their extremely long break, it leaves one to wonder whether the band still has got what it takes to produce quality material.

And the band quickly proves that they still got it, as the music assaults the listener relentlessly right from the start with title track Reflections of a Psychotic Past, with the heavy and crushing riffs, and drummer Mike punishing his kit like a madman. However, Reflections of a Psychotic Past will soon prove to be more than just a straightforward death/thrash attack as the band incorporates some rather technical moments on the album. Just on the opening track alone, there are numerous shifts in time signatures, with equally complex riffing and rhythm patterns by guitarist Tom and drummer Mike. However, rather than breaking down into a complete technical wank-fest, the band takes a rather straightforward approach, with most songs being short and sweet, preventing the risk of overstaying their welcome, with effective results that leave a lasting impact on the listener. For instance, songs like Graveside View even has a slight grindcore feel on top of the usual death/thrash style of the band. Also, Tom’s lead guitars are often somewhat melodic and not particularly technical, giving a sense of order amidst the chaos that the rhythmic section often impose. The slightly raw and bassy production also helps in creating a heavy impact in the music, upping the intensity of the experience of Reflections of a Psychotic Past.

The difference in the songs that were written back in 1990 and after their reformation is clear, despite the remastering of the tracks from The Other Me. Unlike the newer songs, the tracks from The Other Me have a less polished style, though this isn’t to say that the band’s material from the 90s are bad. What particularly struck me was the similarity between the opening riff of The Other Me and Wormrot‘s Lost Swines, though Radiation Sickness‘ riffs have a rawer and thinner sound, displaying a heavier grind and punk influence here than the newer material, especially with the heavier bass presence as well, giving a nice groove to the music. The vocal approach here is also less developed, with vocalist Doug having a more raw style here with an almost punkish attitude, allowing for the raw energy of the band to really flow out freely. Escape to Insanity even sees him singing cleanly, drawling out the lyrics.

Despite the inclusion of the 1990 EP, the entire album runs for a mere 37 minutes. That said though, Reflections of a Psychotic Past is a nice introduction to people who have never heard of Radiation Sickness before, and displays the band’s growth from one that leans more towards the crossover style to one that has come to include a heavier death metal influence in their music.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by beyondmetal

Image

By GV.

"Master of Hate", a title appears to be safe and not say much these days and to be the name of a disk for a metal band and more if they are Swedish, you quickly come to mind bands which occur in this nation . We find a cd, really devastating, catching my attention and impression from the outset. Crushing sound, heavy guitars and very modern, clean vocals and growls accurate, very intelligent compositions, midway between the heaviest heavy metal very close to death, really something unclassifiable. It is unfair that I can not come to mind Nevermore, for the song structures and a touch of lyrical and vocal intonation in clean but Desultor, are heavier and extreme than Americans. "Division insane", "chapter 1: new era," "black monday", "the luxury of pain" are tracks that will captivate your ears for its diversity generally sound, recorded and mastered at Studios Necromorbus his native obviously is a job for tastes and ears not so pigeonholed and would like people from different genres of metal.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1.Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Fetus Stench was formed in the beginning of 2011 by Andreas Björnson, Christoffer Ilberg, Kristian Karlsson and Emil Wiksten. With everything that was going on, and had been going on for some the time with the metal bands in the area (most of them trying to achieve commercial success or trying to do something original for the exact same purpose and in turn going from great to shit) the local and national metalscene received a counter reaction, something really fucking heavy and aggressive - Fetus Stench. We had been playing together in various bands before and we knew what we were capable of and so, from the first moment we started to jam out in the rehearsal it was obvious that Fetus Stench was going to be the shit. We have since then put out a record called "Stillbirth" through Abyss Records, and it is available worldwide. We have been playing gigs with acknowledged bands like Vomitory and Destiny Outlaw, + more gigs are being planned at the moment. Right now we're preparing ourselves for a mini tour in Norway which will include a festival gig and a headliner gig. Dret.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

The earlier lyrics like the ones on the demo and album are nothing but gory with no intentional message behind the words. We cannot choose how others want to interpret them tho. The lyrics that are being written for the new material, however, have taken another direction and the listener will from now on be more engaged than ever. The focus now lies on very personal subjects which everyone can relate to, like emotions and travels and drugs and our lack of sexual experience which in turn leads to our disability to please women in bed and stuff.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

The release gig for "Stillbirth" here in Karlstad was great. Good crowd, tight performance, way too much booze etc. Vomitory headlined the show as well, it was kick butt.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Guitars, bass, drums and a microphone for the vocals.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Cradle Of Filth, preferably the later records.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

The first gig we ever did was at a local bar/restaurant called "Glada Ankan", it was a Wednesday night and we were first out on the bill. The staff didn't bother with clearing the place from tables or chairs in front of the "Stage" so we played for people who sat down and tried to enjoy their steak and red wine while we grinded like motherfuckers. The whole thing was very, very stupid.

7.What made you guys decide to form a band?

Our mutual love for Steven Spielberg movies.

8.What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

It's great with online zines and passionate people who spread our music, because without sites like yours and others we would not get any attention. Without any attention we wouldn't sell any records. Without records sales we'd be broke. Without cash we wouldn't afford Pizza. We LOVE pizza.

9.Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

Slayer for sure.

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

To divide bands into such obscure subgenres is most necessary, how would you orient yourself through the musical jungle that is the metalscene otherwise? Deathcore is okay and I like most metalcore bands but if I had to pick only one it would have to be Mayhem.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

"The Outer Island" and "Dusk Falls Upon the Temple of the Serpent on the Mount of Sunrise"!

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

When we are not doing things with the band we can be seen doing things with the band. Like rehearsing or creating music or playing live.

13.Your biggest band moment?

This interview. Without a doubt.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

I'll give you my opinion on the current state of the water I have in my glass right now instead. The air temperature is 20+ degrees celsius, that means that the current state of the water I have in my glass is liquid. Not solid, nor gas. I will now proceed and drink it.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Our lead guitarist, Illern, got pregnant one day and his underwear smelled like a dead fetus for a week. But it turned out later that he had been eating a heavily seasoned taco and forgot to wipe his arsehole, he was not carrying a baby. Because of this, we are now considering to change the band name to something more appropriate, like "Seasoned Taco Banana Underwear Smell". Time will tell.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

A very focused and way more brutal Fetus Stench. Be prepared ye bastards!!!

ANGIST (Iceland) "Circle of Suffering" CD EP review by globalmetalapocalypse

Image

By RHYS STEVENSON

2011 saw another Icelandic Death Metal release, it seems that the country has a fascination with bringing out Death Metal releases, yet usually they are of tough quality, and Angist's 'Circle of Suffering' is no exception, bringing to the battlefront the old school style in the form of Bloodbath and Death to name a few. Fluid drumming, gut-rotten vocals and tricky riffs combine and mesh together to excrete a sound so petrifying, it made Eyjafjallajökull erupt in fear. Featuring two females and two males, the quartet from Reykjavík bring a revival to the old guard and freshen up the Icelandic Metal scene. 'Circle of Suffering' is a good sign of more to come, the tremors can be heard, you have been warned.

Rating: 7.5

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

You might now the names of Allen West and Marco Vreven from their musical past. You might even have thought about what it would sound like had they collaborated. And even if you, like me, hasn’t given it a single thought you now have the chance to hear what a collaboration like that would sound like courtesy of Southwicked. If you like the groove of Obituary then you’ll gotta love this. This is heavy, hard and it grooves like there is no tomorrow. This is metal for all those of us who likes Obituary and Bolt Thrower. This just proves that you don’t have to be fast all the time to be good. Even if you turn the pace down you can still be hard and heavy. This is the sound to the Armageddon. This is pure enjoyment. This is some really cool stuff.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

Now this is a name blast from the past. I remember this band’s name from my demo days back in the 80s/90s. I even think I got to hear them too back in the days. From what I remember about their sound it was raw and basic like early Terrrorizer or Nausea. Borderline grindcore/metal played with lots of enthusiasm. With 19 songs you know that you will not get 8 minutes wank offs. This is pure short sharp blast of grinding metal. If you have a hard time with that stuff and feel that metal should be 5+ minutes then this isn’t for you. If you have a fondness for Napalm Death’s “Scum” or feel that everything Terrorizer has done is the stuff then this will be for you. What I like (and for no nostalgic reasons) is that the band sound like I remember them sounding from back in the days. This just proves that good music is timeless. Great.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by aquelarrezine

Image

By Paul Caravasi

The underground devotes will appreciate this band, isn't a mainstream friendly sound, chaotic brutality that deserves a listen. Corrosive carcass do not get old or repetitive, their sound is more along the lines of swedish death metal, Carnage or Nihilist for example, this promising effort comes in attractive packaging, and has great production, well done artwork too. They have many characteristics that make them sound foreign, maybe the vocal aspect and the cool guitar riffs and solos. strong vitality that transmit anger, among the death metal bands, these guys are among the upper class. Corrosive carcass deserves some recognition.Fucking exceptional!.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by aquelarrezine

Image

By Paul Caravasi

Intense influenced by Obituary in my opinion. Death's crown holds no less than 9 tracks of punding death metal. The cover art, the lyrics reflect an obsession with serial killers and morbid stuff, an ideal topic for the underground culture and extreme music, musically the band borrows pieces of extreme genres, such as thrash and death, with a kick ass way to execute the instruments. Southwicked is essential for fans of Benediction, Obituary and Dismember. Get in touch with Clawhammer Pr or Abyss records to get a copy of this cd. Mandatory!.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by aquelarrezine

Image

By Paul Caravasi

Fast and creative sound, the songs on this cd are massive. Brutality at its best, unending assault of metal, the artwork looks like a horror movie poster, and this is well reflective of the lyrical content for the most part. The album contains insane songs, the vocals are low growls mixed with madness, we have all out avalanche grind beats, and moshing riffs. Again, the lyrics are demented, violent and assaulting. Radiation sickness is like a more brutal version of Carcass. Reflections of a psychotic past is sure to please any metal fan. Definitely among the best releases i've gotten all year.Do check this out!.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by aquelarrezine

Image

By Paul Caravasi

Cool name for a band of this style. Violent down tune stone rock with death metal vocals, the entire cd is a unique blend of chaotic riffs and pure rock and roll in the most brutal and devastating way possible. Professional production, kick ass artwork and layout, i've never heard anything so artistic. This band brings inspiration to the underground scene. This is what it would sound like if Black Sabbath did death metal. Mercilessly infectious!.
