FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Dennis van Dommelen

We are talking early nineties. Death Metal was at its absolute peak but the Black metal scene in Scandinavia was already developing. Just a few bands from Norway: Darkthrone, Cadaver and the mighty Fester all released material that was more death metal related. We all know the story of the first Darkthrone album 'Soulside Journey' and how they quickly turned into a black metal band afterwards… Fester from Askim released their debut album “Winter of Sin” in 1992 after the demo tapes “The Introduction” and “Winter of Sin” which sold fast. I can remember seeing the adds of the album in some underground magazines from that time. In 2005 I finally bought the album on a public sale site. “Winter of Sin” became somewhat of a mystique release therefore. So when I finally listened to it for the first time 6 years ago it immediately grab me and never let me go. The guitar work on “Winter of Sin” is nicely done, it mixes a variety of tempos with strange melodies. On the subject of melodies, Fester creates some pretty strange ones, and I can't give a clear example of another band that does that. That also counts for the guitar solo's which appear at the rarest moments but are well thought and always going somewhere. Bjorn's vocals are harsh and more in the direction of black- than death metal. The album carries a dark and mysterious atmosphere of melancholy and despair, yet also nocturnal beauty. The songs possess and epic feel, maintaining a certain amount of gloom, despite a few upbeat riffs. It is difficult to choose the best songs as they are filled with so many different riffs and tempos. But over the years “Liberation” -with its majestic dreamy outtake- became somewhat of a favourite. For the majority of the album, the songs are slower or mid-paced though it does vary. To say that Fester has their own sound is an understatement so is to say that this is an absolute underground release that is not everybody's cup of tea. If you're into early nineties black/ death metal please give this a try. Abyss records does a great job here re-releasing this classic album in digi pack format with re-mastered sound at Bonemachine studio and including a live '91 track. The album “Silence” that came after this one shall also be re-released by Abyss records soon. Make sure to get that one too! Fester recently got together and the majority of songs for a new album is already done and to be released later this year. Can't wait for that one! For now: “Feel the cold waves of winter, not only in winter but the whole year…” Rating: 92/100

HAT (Norway) - Vortex of Death DIGI CD review by http://www.minacious.org

Image

By Mordant

Hat is Norwegian for Hate (also Swedish by the way), back in 1993 they where known as Ravner, after a hiatus lasting from 1996 to 2996 they have now returned as Hat. This is their second album under that name and it’s an intense experience. You can tell the band was originally started in 1993, the music is a perfect example of the second wave of Black Metal done right, the Norwegian kind. The music is brutal and raw, yet with a strong atmospheric touch. There is a true sense of darkness to the music, which is very important. If you are tired of third rate Darkthrone-clones and are looking for a true piece of Norwegian Black metal art Hat is a must.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) - Bodyfarm CD EP review by HatredMeansWar

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Bodyfarm are a band from the Netherlands that plays a very brutal form of death metal and this is a review of their self titled 2011 album which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from midpaced to fast drumming with alot of brutal blast beats, while the bass playing has a very dark tone which is kind of mixed down low in the mix and seems to follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and on the last song they sound very powerful.

Rhythm guitars range from midpaced to fast death metal riffs that also have a thrash edge at times and you can hear all of the 90's influences in the music, while the lead guitars are very chaotic sounding death metal guitar solos.

Vocals are mostly deep death metal growls, while the lyrics touch on war style themes, as for the production it has a very heavy and professional feel to it with the music sounding very 90s sounding and brutal.

In my opinion Bodyfarm are a very good classic sounding death metal band and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band. RECEMMONDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Bodyfarm" and "Slaves Of War". RECEMMONDED BUY.

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD (US pressing) review by http://www.welovemetal.com

Image

By: Martell

The argument of modern technology and its effect on the music industry is something that can be argued for hours. We tend to go to the negative side of the debate and look at how the digital revolution had caused downloading and ruined the ability of musicians to make money, but in reality there are some very positive aspects to music and what modern technology has done to it. The simple one would be the ease of recording that is experienced now, but what I want to talk about is the ability to dredge up some long forgotten favorites and bring them back to new generations of fans.
Diabolical’s new album “Ars Vitae” is a mixture of the old, the new, and the lost. These 15 year veterans have been producing brilliant death metal for a long time and Ars Vitae shows they still have the ability to make some elaborate metal, while at the same time showing some of their early work that influenced so many. The CD also contains an entire live concert that was recorded but never released before.
Sverker Widgren is the front man and brains behind the operation, but is more known for the extensive production work he has done in the genre. The reason I bring this up is the lost album that was brought back is “Deserts of Desolation” and the post production work that has been done by Widgren show his ability sitting at a board. This mini album was only ever recorded on a 7”, but you would never know that by listening to track after track of pure brutality.
The other amazing aspect of the CD is the live concert sounds as if it came out of a studio itself. Diabolical appears to be known for pushing the envelope of metal so it may be difficult for the casual listener to tell the difference between their work or possible miscues live. The amount of effort put into making these tracks “quality” deserves to be recognized as much as the music itself. Most bands would bring back the old tracks and say the sound is bad because of the era it came from. Diabolical seems to feel their fans deserve more.
“Ars Vitae” translates to “Art of Life” which is very fitting for this album. Life is often broken into three cycles: the past, the present, and the future. The past is well represented on the album with the rehash of Deserts of Desolation and the history behind it. The present comes in the form of a live concert, where we as fans can hear the heart stopping metal that Diabolical is known for can be seamlessly translated to the stage. The future comes in the new tracks. Weidgren, Jansson (guitar), Stjarnlov (bass), and Darforth (guitar) have taken the past and present to give us a glimpse into the future. After hearing the bone crushing sound you will understand Diabolical cannot be stopped and their legend will continue to grow.
Having researched the band I tend to agree with the fact that they are underrated. Ars Vitae may change that because they give us everything we need to make proper judgment of a band that leads the way in experimental death metal. The album gives us every piece of the band at every point in their career and the realization that Diabolical has remained this hellacious and brutal is something that needs to be honored; and feared.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) Chalice of Black Flames CD EP review by http://www.metalmaniacs.com

Image

By Janet Willis (Defecation of the Divine)

Another fireball of melodic brutality set aflame by Abyss records, this Swedish black death metal band releases a piece of rhythmic and melodic yet brutal metal EP. I’m not a huge fan of EP’s, but on a very rare occasion like this one it’s totally worth it. I’d like to say that hints of the brutal occult melody found on classic Dissection i.e. “Storm of the Lights Bane” comes to mind for me, but that’s up to great debate as are most comparisons. It’s been sadly quite a few years since I graced my ears with that album and the likes of Amorphis’ “Tales From The Thousand Lakes”, as I’ve been going more into my classic death metal days of gore and blood, blasphemy, and good old fashioned doom sounds. Every so often a band comes across my path like a blessed black cat and inspires me to revisit those sounds, maybe I gave up after Jon’s death and their final album, it felt a bit lost from what I’d been accustomed to, but nothing will undo that initial powerful presence as Emperor’s “In The Nightside Eclipse” or Mayhem’s “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” also had on my ears. Some things are immortal to a certain extent, and Dissection is a band that falls into that realm.
This review is obviously not about Dissection, but there is a definite hint of that black/death melodic feel of the great days past felt strongly on here and that seems to be what memory struck me. Regardless of the accuracy of my memory, which might be as flawed as any, memories are very inaccurate and unreliable, but mark my words “This band brings that dark melodic feel back”. You can feel the blizzards blow, the frozen wasteland, and the rising of the eternally condemned. There is something as catchy and memorable with Choassworn as with the classics mentioned, you can feel the life swell within the sounds as the supernatural within your veins. For those who yearn to recapture that classic Dissection/ early Emperor sound and continually live frustrated shall be ultimately relieved to hear this band.
Chaossworn holds the torch to the majestic and awesome sounds of the past and Abyss Records seems to release albums with the intent to re-awaken that era. Maybe some have moved on, and rightfully so, but once an impression that deep has been left it’s very difficult to resist those nostalgic urges to hang on. Those catchy phrases and distinctively unique and evil, yet inspiring moments, will always tug at us and leave us in that state of permanent reminiscence. Shit…if the opening and main riff on “Crowned” doesn’t instantly make you drool and boil your heathen blood, than you clearly don’t belong here. I hope to Fucking Hell this band releases a massive full-length soon. If anything will resurrect the glory days it’ll be a band like this. I know a few friends of sorts from within my circle are reading this right now and will grab at the chance to check this out, hopefully they will and many others. If this shit sucked and wasn’t worthy of my time and words, it wouldn’t be here.
Do yourselves a favor and give this one a spin, it may be three songs, but it’s three songs of pure old-school joy. Nothing here is cliché, stale, borrowed, or uninspired, this is electrocuting and exhilarating menacing metal played the way it should be, so get off your spoiled pathetic asses and listen to something worthy for once, as opposed to a barf fest of knock off crap form a bunch of pussies with a hard-on to be scary and “brutal” or “cult”. This is fifteen minutes of your mundane existence that will actually count for something so get off your ass and check this stuff out!!!!!!

HUMANGLED (Italy) interview by http://www.teethofthedivine.com

Image

Article by Jodi Michael
Similar to the intestinal parasite that must be removed from the punctured gut by being wound around a stick and sucked slowly from the wound, Humangled churn and slurp at the innards, and can only be removed forcibly. Admit it: you’re hungry now, aren’t you?! These sick Italian deathsters bring forth Fractal, their punishing 2010 release. Contact was made with founding members Andrew Goreds and Luke Scurb, who were eager to let TOTD pick their brains.

Humangled was once called Putrid Sequence, back in the ’90s. Can you explain how Humangled came to be?
Andrew Goreds: Humangled was born when we (Goreds/Scurb) decided to transform Putrid Sequence, [a] grind-industrial duo, into a death metal band. The change of moniker became a necessity for the different music proposal and line-up configuration.

2010 has seen the release of your full-length, Fractal, on Abyss Records. How has the album been received so far?
Luke Scurb: We collected a lot of appreciation with our debut! The reviews we got till now [were] only best rates or totally bad. That also explains maybe why we like to say that “they can love us or hate us, there is no intermediate position.”

The songs on the new album are an interesting blend of blunt death metal, choppy progressive elements, and melancholy. Which bands have influenced your sound?
AG: There are of course traces of some classic bands like Death, Carcass, Pestilence and many others that we can’t deny; it’s quite normal being grown as musicians in the early 90s, but we don’t like to refer to any specific one but only to the overall “taste” of death metal that includes both aggressive-brutal and groovy-melodic elements.

How do you feel the band has progressed from Edge of Beyond to Fractal?
LS: The music proposal of Humangled is in progress. Since the beginning we had no idea about “how” our ideas can be explained. Our sound, and lyrics too, are improving from time to time. We felt that the CD Edge of Beyond was really a boundary overpassed by Fractal and now the opinion of the audience conforms to what we think about our sound.

Fractal was mixed and mastered by the mighty Dan Swanö. How did you get together with him?
AG: It was really a pleasure for us to get an immediate connection with a master like Dan, when we exposed in our emails the idea of [the] sound we wanted to have in our first album. We wanted to contact a pro like him to avoid a lack of quality in the mixing/mastering process, in our choice also consider[ed] the extent of his musician and producer experiences.

You released a demo, Anatomic Butchery, in 1997, and then Refoetalize came out in 2007. What was the band doing during that span of 10 years between the two?
LS: We disbanded for personal reasons. Not properly for misunderstandings, but just because we had different intentions and incompatible ways to reach the same goals.

Why does Humangled choose to write lyrics in the English language?
AG: We feel it quite natural, because our will is to produce a composite message of music plus visuals plus lyrics, and being understandable to as many as possible make[s] (American) English a key part of this process.

Are there any touring plans in your future?
LS: Unfortunately not at the moment. Many are asking for this, but we cannot confirm anything precisely for now.

What are some great extreme Italian metal groups that you think we should check out?
AG: Some acts from Italy are now getting known, not anymore in power metal only, and we really appreciate some of them like Illogicist, Hour of Penance and Fleshgod Apocalypse.

Is there anything else that I’ve failed to ask that we should know?
LS: Not really, thanks! But we take the occasion to say that our motto, “hypocrisy demands brutality,” is a common line for Humangled songs that deprecate some of the human aberrations. In fact, the album[‘s] purpose is to explain that how nature compose[s] fractal forms, mind and human behaviours are fractal as well. We like to add “splatter/gore” spicy elements but not to write about themes of pure fantasy, as we think reality is a good source for death metal ideas.

HAT (Norway) - Vortex of Death DIGI CD review by http://www.teethofthedevine.com

Image

By Erik Thomas

Formed in 1993 under the name of Ravner, then resurfacing after a brief hiatus in 2006 as Hat (Norwegian for ‘hate’), Hat are a duo of corpse-painted, spike clad Norwegians playing brittle, frosty, hateful orthodox black metal culled straight from the early ’90s. While that little description is probably more than apt for me to describe Vortex of Death, and for you the decide whether to purchase it or not, I should probably go into a little more detail.
To me, the major influence of Vortex of Death, the band’s second full length album is Abigor’s Veristung/Invoke the Dark Age without the medieval aura, Wrath of the Tyrant era Emperor sans synths and a less bassy Gorgoroth. The riffs swirl with a shrill, but melodic and controlled tremolo picked intensity, the vocals are a continual high pitched shriek with the occasional chant or spoken word, there are a few occult, atmospheric injections and the bass and drums are barely audible. It nothing that hasn’t been done to death, but in this era of black metal interbreeding with so many other genres, it’s actually refreshing to hear something this pure, and unashamedly old school. And it doesn’t seem forced or merely homage either, similar to recent releases by the likes of Cavus, Svartsyn and Sacrilegious Impalement, it’s like a record dug up from 1995 and released upon the world.
At 44 minutes in length and with only eight songs, each of the tracks is pretty lengthy but well crafted with just enough variety from the piercing maelstrom to keep you interested; whether it be a mid-paced march or slight atmospheric tangent or chant, the tracks manage to mount a surprisingly listenable primal black metal assault. That being said I’m not sure I could pick out the likes of “Innhumanus Revelatio”, “Overmenneske”, and “Slaves of Insanity” from each other or a crowd of Darkthrone, Mayhem and Immortal songs from the early ’90s. As for vocalist Undertykker–while certainly having an over the top, purist delivery–begins to grate after a while.
But like I said, for a fix of old school black metal that’s a welcome break from black metal that’s tainted with shoegaze, post, sludge or progressive and experimental elements (as much as I enjoy them), Vortex of Death fits the church burning bill.

HUMANGLED (Italy) Fractal DIGI CD review by http://www.metalmaniacs.com

Image

By Janet Willis (Defecation of the Divine)

For some reason as of the last six months or so I’ve almost soley gone back to classic death metal, death/grind, crust, and keeping my doom and kraut roots. The best rationale is because of bands like: Death (all eras/albums), Obituary, Napalm Death, Coroner, Morbid Angel, Terrorizer, Discharge, Carcass, etc, always sought out the most extreme way of making a real statement and delivered it as heavily, brutal, melodic, rhythmic, at times technical, but unique and even intellectual at the same time. With Humangled I’m glad to say that new acts can still strive for and succeed to make equally promising and awesome metallic sounds.
This young Italian band left me pleased and gratefully confused as within the album, but also in each track they managed to combine “chugga chugga” steam engine diesel riffs with an almost Death or Coroner style prog rhythm, aggressive but still understandable vocals, and incredible virtuosity and melodic sense as do Morbid Angel/Obituary. The confusing part was that whenever I had thought that the track was heading fast and menacing in one direction they took an unexpected and equally amazing jolt into another direction.
Two things that remained constant though and became readily predictable was the skill level and smoothness. A current act that sounds perfectly at place in the 20+ year ago brutal metal scene when talent reigned and fans were loyal, real, and had the highest expectations in their music choices. Above all else folks: IT HAS TO KICK MASSIVE ASS!!!!!!!!!!
I challenge anyone out there with any similarities in my taste to deny this album and Humangled. Just listening to “Brutalize The Pedophile” instantly brought to my mind Coroner’s “Semtex Revolution”, but the entire album, Mental Vortex, is brought to mind for me in many moments throughout this album. If you honestly want something standard and generic like most stuff these days this is not for you, but if you are in fact interested in the brutal, melodic, and highly skilled I’d pick this one up in an instant.

ANGREPP (Sweden) interview by http://www.metalmaniacs.com

Image

An Interview with Dahl of ANGREPP by Janet Willis (Defecation of the Divine)

Metal Maniacs: I received your album from Dan at Abyss for review and he said that you’d be up for an interview, so for starters, tell us about you guys?
Angrepp: Thank you!
We’re five individuals who come together to puke hate, aggression and attitude for the benefit of all. Anything else? No – we’re always filthy sick, and throwing up is our nature.

Image

Metal Maniacs: So how has the reception been for “Warfare” so far?
Angrepp: Again – thank you!
The reviews thus far have been generally favorable. That said, I do wonder whether or not some reviewers (I’m sure not including you!) really listen to the music or if they just skim through the tracks whilst cooking dinner. To me it seems like some have been speeding past the music, scrambled for a quick opinion and then written something rather generic.
In other words, even though I’m all for reviews and have written a fair amount myself long ago, ideally people should simply listen the album themselves and make up their own minds.

Metal Maniacs: I know from experience that there are many who do just crank reviews out do to publication deadlines and just to be the “first” one, and it’s fairly obvious who does it when they do because the review is fairly “off”. My only solution to that is that if bands really are offended or bothered by this they should do take it upon themselves to put the extra time in to find the right person to do the reviews/interviews and such. Everyone wants to bitch, but no one does anything about it.
With that being said, I’ve been surprised to find so many good crust/grind/ metallic punk bands coming out of Sweden, some new and some classic. Recently I picked up a new find Misantrope, which definitely fits in with the Wolfpack, Anti-Cimex sounds as would you guys to a certain degree. Is there a really solid scene in Sweden for crust/metallic punk like sounds or is it just an odd coincidence?
Angrepp: A solid scene? Verily I say onto you – as soon as you spot something in the process of being established, build a weapon of MASS ANNIHILATION and DESTROY THE FUCK OUT OF IT. If signs of life still remain: you do it again and you do it right.
That said, KEGCHARGE is all I need. As for Swedish punks I’ll stick with TOTALT JÄVLA MÖRKER, THE PERUKERS (burn out!!!), SKITSYSTEM, DISARM, MOB47, AVSKUM, DRILLER KILLER (brutalize!!!) etc. I don’t actively search for new bands.

Metal Maniacs: What’s it like being a newer band in such a huge and crowded arena of music?
Angrepp: Being a relatively new band, I reason that if we simply keep RAPING, KILLING, and blasting out ROCK’N'ROLL we’ll clear a space in this vast sea of squealing pigs soon enough.

Metal Maniacs: Quite possibly…Is there a certain sound that you guys specifically want to go for?
Angrepp: “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever.” For me, Angrepp is the aural extension of this prophesy, laughing in disrespect at the abysmal stupidity of mankind.
We’ll force our sound to be played at funeral ceremonies of burned sheep and shepherds alike – FUCK YOU ALL. Those with eyes to see and ears to hear – the party has begun, bang your fucking heads!

Metal Maniacs: Are there any live Angrepp actions in the near future?
Angrepp: Not any booked at this moment of writing, but we definitely plan to do a lot of gigs, and hopefully tour, with this album. Looking forward to wreak havoc with you all!

Metal Maniacs: Is there anything that you’d like to say as a last word?
Angrepp: Failure lies not in falling down. Failure lies in not killing yourself if you do.

ITEM OF THE DAY

DARKTHRONE - FROSTLAND TAPES 3 CD SET - $25 + S/H

Image

To coincide with the band's 21st anniversary, this is a fascinating trip into
the earliest years of the band and the first official release ever to contain
all 4 of Darkthrone’s demos in one place.

Frostland Tapes also includes a rare live recording from Denmark in 1990 (one
of only a handful of live appearances that Darkthrone has ever made) and,
perhaps most significantly, the previously unreleased version of the infamous
1991 Goatlord rehearsal session.

These songs were intended to feature on the proposed second album, before the
band changed direction and the tapes were confined to the vaults. Vocals were
subsequently added in the mid-nineties, but they are presented here as the
recording sounded in 1991.

The set comes in a rigid digibook featuring an interview with the band,
chronicling their early days, ambitions and inspirations.

Disc 1
1. Land of Frost
2. Winds of Triton
3. Forest of Darkness
4. Odyssey of Freedom
5. Day of the Dead
6. Intro: Twilight Dimension
7. Snowfall
8. Eon
9. Thulcandra
10. Archipelago
11. Soria Moria

Disc 2

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://metal-revolution.com

Image

By Bato
Originally released in 1992, Winter Of Sun is a classic album by one of the pioneers in blending black and death metal, Fester. Fester was originally called Heroic Conduct; so you may have came across them before.

Almost two decades since its initial release Winter Of Sun has been re-released for the first time by Abyss Records. They’ve done a whole new artwork, printed line notes for each song, stories from the past, and a special live bonus track of a song that was originally only found on the studio version of the band’s first demo. The song is called “When Darkness Confirms – Live ‘91” which serves both as a nice introduction to the band, but also as a nice album closer.

On Winter Of Sun this Norwegian institution is still blending death & black metal, but with some major doomy influences. Tempo varies a great deal and the whole atmosphere ranges from the monotonous and depressive one to more appealing and catchy. Obviously the sound quality is not the best one, but again for obscure death/doom/Black metal and its fanatic followers, it is just a perfect old-school release. Lyrical themes are mainly about winter, occultism, anti-Christianity and similar themes – now you’ve been warned.

Fester is actually currently in studio recording their 3rd studio album, 17 years after the last one, and I’m quite exited to see if they can still create blasphemous and obscure aggressive music like back in days. However, I see no particular reason for the re-release of this cult vinyl release, and only true old-school metal lovers will find it interesting. If you happen to be one of them, take a look at their website first: http://www.myspace.com/festernorway

BODYFARM (Netherlands) - Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.hellridemusicforums.com

Image

By Janet Willis

Bodyfarm – BodyFarm

Expect classic old school death vocals with the obliterating down tuned riff assaults and machine gun fire percussion…and the classic death metal signature pig squeal here and there to bring in the classic but not simply reinvent the wheel. This motherfucker is a semi automatic in the hands of a bullied 15 year old suffering from a psychotic break, in other words it’s a: violent, ultra destructive, high energy, quick, brutal experience that turns humans and surroundings into dust when the structures and bodies collapse into mush and dust because of the amount of holes blown through them in a mere few seconds. It racks up bodies like a true massacre should and is absolutely intense to the point of inspiration to create a random afternoon of bloody chaos. “Handle with Care”, in the hands of the stupid and weak this might instigate an act of horrific violence!!!!

There’s something very dark and ominous in these tracks that induces fear even in those of us who scoff at it. It’s almost as if hearing the insane urges and emotions of a violent psychopath told through sound as they bounce back and forth between all out fury and obliteration and dark introspective silence and preparing to draw out some act of inhumane and unspeakable torture, especially in some of the screeching voices in the background on “Chaos and Wrath” echoing through.

Just looking at the titles of the tracks like: “No Place for a Human”, “The Smell of Blood and Iron”, and “Chaos and Wrath” and it’s not a huge step to guess that the contents are comprised of bloodbaths and concentrated hate. Imagine decapitating someone and standing over them while their body twitches, holding the still blinking bloody head in your hands, and what you’d possibly feel flow through your veins could be described accurately by any track on here.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) - The Spirit of Warfare CD review by Decibel Magazine

We've got the warfare, yes we do!

If I didn't know better, I'd wager a few kronor that Hyperborean's debut LP, The Spirit of Warfare, is actually a long-lost Dissection album, recorded in the mid -'90s, but sadly forgotten amidst the brouhaha over Jon Nodtveidt's murder trial. It's all there - the fluid rhythmic change ups, cloven-hoofed drumming, clenched-throat rasping and, most importantly, the dynamic riffs, draped in robes of kingly melody. All that's missing is Necrolord artwork and a suicidal frontman.
Hyperborean have the sonics of all those classic Moonfog and Osmose records down pat, too. Andreas Blomqvist's guitars issue declarations of war with a metallic tanginess; session drummer Fredrik Widigs' crisp blasts sound like they've been created by real ankles and wrists, while Max Lindberg's bass is nigh inaudible (how nostalgic!). The dry, slightly distanced mix (some may call it "thin") de-emphasizes Hyperborean's power, but it also lays bare their songwriting prowess. That approach pays dividends on a keyboard-drenced track like "The Last Stand of Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae", which arrays guitars and synths in billowing plumes, not Cheez Whiz.
As advertised, The Spirit of Warfare's lyrics engage the impulse towards war. Hyperborean's narrators extol the will to power as the highest virtue, a much bleaker philosophy than the romanticized bloodlust of countrymen Unleashed or Amon Amarth. One hopes that the band itself is less than stoked at the prospect of this lyric, from album-ender "The Sick Man of Europe" : "A fire lit shall become our fate / A candelabra of burning hate / A banner of flames unfurled / A pyre to scorch the world." But it's probably wise to keep on Hyperborean's good side, just in case.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by ochsenschaedel via http://www.metal-archives.com

Image

By ochsenschaedel

unique, yet strange and calm northern bleakness

One of those unrecovered treasures of sinister norwegian metal must be FESTER’s second album. Not only as this is the first review but because they weren’t the most popular bands of their country when it comes to the style of their musick back in 1994. Black Metal was the big thing and Fester kicked off with “Winter of sin” as a supposedly band of this genre. Their first assault was quite OK, but with this attempt they managed to form a certain style of metal that put them a bit besides the common areas of black metal, in Norway and the rest of this rotten world.

“Silence”. There could not have been a better choice for the titel of that CD. Usually metal is supposed to be in your face, is meant to be somehow “loud”, direct, a streight look into your eyes. But this album is pure understatement, is shy, is the feeling of loneliness amongst thousand people. FESTER understood how to build their own niche of tasteful and relaxed, gloomy and mystic bleak metal. Yes, “Silence” is bleak, yet somehow filled with warmth.

Some words to the sound: low tuned, accentuated guitar tones meet strong pounding, strangely produced drum patterns. Quite traditional heavy metal riffing mostly mid tempo like performed. Every riff is placed with care, every melancholic melody line goes directly into your brain and won’t leave you. The unhurried tempo isn’t changed that often and thus you might think it’s a pure doom metal album, but it is not. There are not really any traditional doom metal riffs in there. Its rather heavy metal riffing inspired by calm black metal aesthetic feelings. You see, it’s not easy to described what those four young norwegians created here. It is definitely a sound that has NEVER been there before and has never been copied by any other bands.

And its not only the guiter- and drumsound, the melodies and structures that create this eerie feeling. The vocals are among the most strangest ever on a metal record. There is no screaming or growling, there is only this whispering voice, somehow mysterious and distant. Maybe later beeing re-covered (copied?) by danish dark folk band OF THE WAND AND THE MOON. Lyrics deal with loneliness, night, ravens, misery, death. Nothing special, but well done.

Eight tracks (plus one semi accustic/keyboard track) with a flawless line of great compositions and perhaps one “hit” that has to be “voices from the woods” with its majestic, keyboard-filled chorus. But my personal favourite for the last 14 years was always “growing thirst” with that great uptempo riffing and haunting melodies.

This album is trying to catch the mood of silence and loneliness as perfect as a metal album could ever do so. Its is a piece of art that you will recognize easily amongst 100.000 faceless albums.

CHRIST BEHEADED (U.S.) Open the Gates of Hell CD review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Christ Beheaded are a band from Indianpolis, Indiana that haves some members from some well known midwestern bands and this is a review of their 2008 e.p "Open The Gates Of Hell" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums are very fast with alot of brutal blast beats mixed in with some slow to midpaced drumming, while the bass plaing is all rhythm bass with fast riffs that follow the guitars.

Rhythm guitars are mostly fast black metal riffs with some midpaced and slower heavy parts that have a blackened death metal feel and a small amount of evil sounding melodies on the last song, while the lead guitars when they are used are noisy and chaotic sounding black metal guitar solos.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams while the lyrics cover Anti Christianity, Satanism and death, as for the production it is very raw and primitive the way black metal should be.

In my opinion Christ Beheaded are a good black metal band and while this is not the most original sounding black metal that I have heard Christ Beheaded still put out quality Satanic metal and this is a band that I would like to see in concert, if you are a fan of true satanic black metal you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Open The Gates Of Hell" and "The Cleansing Ritual". RECOMMENDED BUY.

FAUST (Italy) Interview by Metal Nobility

Image

FAUST!!!
Here is the interview for FAUST:
------------------------------
1. The guitar tones on Faust, "From Glory To Infinity" are amazing. What brands of guitars were used for the rhythm, acoustic, and lead tones and what are the specs on each guitar? (pickups, strings, et al...)
AC: The two rhythm guitars and my lead were recorded by a B.C.Rich, humbuckers EMG 81-85 , strings Everly B-52; the lead of Ghiulz by a B.C.Rich. I don’t remember the brand of the acoustic guitar.

2. In my humble opinion, "From Glory To Infinity" is one of the coolest and unique metal releases in years. What is your writing process when you sit down to write a Faust song?
AC: Thanks for your compliments! Me and Ghiulz wrote the material, Steve his bass lines and Daray recorded the drum mainly following the scores I wrote. The ideas born playing a lot, looking for a result that we have in mind and experimenting new sounds. Then we put all these ideas together, working on the composing process. It takes days to compose a song. Usually we start with one guitar; then: the arrangements of the second guitar, the drum, the bass, the solos and the lyrics. A song is finished when we have developed some themes following a predetermined structure (different for each track of the album).

3. "From Glory To Infinity" has gotten great reviews, and I personally bought it myself because of how great the reviews are, and I loved it. How does it feel to have a such strong record that has been so well recieved under your belt?
AC: I’m very glad to receive such good responses; but, sincerely, I was expecting for this: we worked a lot to reach this result and we were conscious to compose something really competitive. Unfortunately we are still looking for live dates.

4. I've seen some Faust tour footage on the web, and your live band sounds great. What is your personal favorite moment from the album tour so far?
AC: You saw old videos of FAUST. We must do the tour for the new album yet.

5. Your vocal performance on "From Glory To Infinity" is very clear, brutal and unique. How are such clear death metal vocals achieved in a studio setting and have you any tips for the up and coming death metal vocalist?
AC: The first time I used this way of singing, was for the mcd of 2001 “…And Finally FAUST!”. The idea was to vary my vocals from a deep growl to a sort of scream, closing and opening my mouth, going up and down, even in the same line. All of this following the notes to emphasize, and not to drown, the melody and the rhythm of the music. My suggestion is to have clearly in mind the sound you are looking for and to practice over and over.

6. Who was the first metal hero that inspired you to pick up the guitar?
AC: Not a Metal hero, but a band: Metallica, in the eighties.

7. What was your first heavy metal album? Give your thoughts on it retrospectively.
AC: I don't remember the first album I got, but the first song I listened to: “Jump In The Fire” of Metallica.

8. Some amazing performances were caught on tape for Faust, "From Glory To Infinity". Steve DiGiorgio smokes the bass parts, Daray ices the drums and Ghiulz and Luca are outstanding as well. This album truly was the product of a "Supergroup". What are your reflective thoughts on the recording of and the completed studio album?
AC: I’m completely satisfied of the album: I worked with great musicians as Ghiulz (in the band since 2000), Steve and Daray; I couldn’t ask for more. This is an album of very high-level technical music: nothing to envy to anyone else.

9. The album cover of Faust, "From Glory To Infinity" is AWESOME. How did that artwork come about?
AC: I’m glad you like it. I was looking for something that gave me the idea of “from glory to infinity” and represented my lyrics.

10. Your Faust cd, "From Glory To Infinity", has inspired me to do more with my own music in regards to complex layering and just trying harder to make progressively better music. What are a few metal albums that inspired you in the same manner?
AC: What you say is very important for me because it confirms that “From Glory…” is a great album; but, above all, it is able to transmit emotions deeply in the listeners. About few Metal albums that inspired me, I could mention three titles: “Testimony Of The Ancients” of Pestilence, “Blessed Are The Sick” of Morbid Angel, “Human” of Death.

Hail to all readers! Hope to see you soon at the FAUST’s live shows!
This concludes the FAUST interview. Progressive death metal from Italy.
The FAUST album, "From Glory To Infinity" receives a 10/10 from Metal Nobility, for sheer musical brilliance in regards to composition and kinetic execution.
METAL HAILS!

Diabolical (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD (US pressing) review by http://www.cosmosgaming.com

Image

By Chris Dahlberg

Diabolical is one of those Swedish death metal bands that I had heard a lot about but had never actually listened to before. So when their newest release Ars Vitae I decided to give it a shot, and as it turns out this is actually a pretty good starting point. Ars Vitae consists of four new songs, a live performance, and the group’s first EP Deserts of Desolation in a new re-mastered form. It’s a worthy release for both newcomers and those who are familiar with the band, as the sound quality is the great and the new tracks hint at interesting things to come.
I’m going to start off by looking at the new tracks and the re-mastered EP, which make up the beginning and end of the album. While there are technically four new songs, one of them is an introduction so it seems like there are only three new tracks. This is alright though, as the new songs are stunning and use melodic guitar riffs to create quite a bit of atmosphere and it gives Diabolical a sound that is a cross between modern day melodic death metal and progressive death metal/thrash. Everything has a very crisp and clean production, which gives the music some bite but also lets the progressive elements steal the spotlight on occasion. Current vocalist Sverker "Vidar" Widgren has a harsh growl that is a little cleaner than some of his peers but is well suited to the band’s sound. These songs hint at the band going in an even more progressive/melodic direction than before, and long time fans will be sure to enjoy them. It’s very interesting to compare these to the Deserts of Desolation EP that is also included, as the band sounds completely different. This EP originally came out in 1996 and as it turns out the lineup that recorded this EP played much more traditional death metal as the songs have the familiar buzzing guitars and prominent bass lines. The band also had a different vocalist at the time, and he has an extremely high pitched shriek that is very raw and in your face. While I personally prefer the direction that Diabolical is headed in now, Deserts of Desolation has its moments and it is great to see where the band started.

The majority of the content on Ars Vitae comes from the nine live tracks that have been included. This is what makes the effort perfect for newcomers, as it seems as though the songs have been distributed pretty evenly between the band’s full length albums and because of this listeners will be able to get a good idea of what their overall discography sounds like. While live recordings can be hit or miss, the recording quality is surprisingly good and on some of these tracks you wouldn’t know they were the live version without hearing the crowd cheering at the end. Both the vocals and instrumentals sound just as good as on Diabolical’s albums, and while a few of them blend together due to similar riffs the performance as a whole is enjoyable.

This type of release is always appreciated, as it gives listeners a representation of what the band sounds like live, what they sounded like at the beginning, and what they’re going to sound like in the near future. While Diabolical may not be my favorite band of this type just yet (as the middle of their discography sounds like fairly stereotypical melodic death metal) Ars Vitae was enjoyable and the new songs hint at bigger and better things to come. If you’re a fan of the genre this release still comes recommended though, and it’s great to see a long running act release a compilation/live effort that feels as though a lot of thought was put into it.

HORDES OF NEBULAH (U.S.) ...And Blasphemous Night Shall Fall CD review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Hordes Of Nebulah are a band from Crawfordsville, Indiana that has been around since 1999 that plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of their compilation album which was recorded between 2002 and 05 known as "And Blasphemous Night Shall Fall" which was released by Abyss Records during the year of 2008.

Drums are very fast and brutal with alot of evil sounding blast beats, while the bass plying which is low in the mixing sounds very dark with the riffs following the guitars and on some of the songs there are some ambient style effects thrown in that gives the music a depressing feel that also adds a little bit of an avant garde sounding piano.

Rhythm guitars are mostly fast and primal black metal rhythms in the riffing with a good amount of midpaced playing mixed in with some distorted reverb effects and a small amount of a death metal influence, while the lead guitars when they are rarley utilized are fast and raw black metal guitar solos that only appear briefly.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams with some deep growls thrown in on ocassion that bring a death metal feel to the music and on one of the songs there is some female vocals being utilized that are very dark dark and esoteric, while the lyrics cover misanthropy, war and nihilism with a true hatred for the nazarene and some of the infernal names being called upon in true left hand path tradition, as for the production it is dark and raw in the true black metal fashion.

In my opinion Hordes Of Nebulah are a very good US black metal band, and this cd proves that even in the early 2000's there was some great quality black metal coming out of this country, if you are a fan of true primitive black metal you should add this album to your collection.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Black Canonization" "Moontide" "When The Sun Was Bled Of It's Light" and "Reign Of Impiety". RECOMMENDED BUY.

PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION (U.S.) interview by http://www.examiner.com

Image

D.R.I.’s Kurt Brecht commands the PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION By Mark Morton

Some things just never go out of style. Take crossover metal, for example, which was rooted in the 1980s punk movement, before it broke into the metal stream and never looked back. The sound harnessed the irate rawness of punk rock and bled it into the furious crunch of metal, offering a “new” tone that cross-pollinated scenes and fans alike. The flagbearer of this sound was D.R.I., a rambunctious group of youths with mountains of energy and axes to grind.
Fast-forward nearly 30 years – D.R.I. is still kicking, still grinding, and still taking names. But now, vocalist Kurt Brecht has expanded his horizons and joined up with the remnants of Texas cult metallers Dead Horse. Using the name Pasadena Napalm Division, the group is stirring the mosh pit and keeping that old school spirit alive.
Read on, as we spend some time with Kurt Brecht and discuss the present of the past.

How do you view Pasadena Napalm Division? Is it a side-project; is it a real band? What does it mean to you?
Well, D.R.I. is my bread and butter, and I’m very busy with them touring right now. But PND is also really important to me. It did start out just as a little project, but hopefully, we’ll take it further. We want to play more shows out and around the world – not just in Houston and the Texas area.

How did PND come together? Did you round up the Dead Horse guys or did they come to you?
When Dead Horse broke up, they had already planned on returning with a new band at some point in the future. That time finally came around. They started working on new songs, but they had no singer. They heard that I was in town, in Houston, contacted me, and the rest is history.

Did you have a relationship with the Dead Horse guys prior to this?
No, D.R.I. had played one show with them years ago in Albuquerque, NM, but that was it.

So what was it about them that made you say “yes” to PND?
Just listening to the songs that they had and realizing that it wouldn’t be too hard to write some lyrics for them. The guys in the band all seemed really nice, too. I’d never jammed with anyone outside of D.R.I. before, except for the one song I did with Dave Grohl for his Probot project. D.R.I. was my first band, so I thought it would be fun to jump in there and try something else out.
We have other songs recorded already. In fact, we kept some of the better songs off of the first disc. We’re hoping to put out a full-length album or another EP by February of next year.

Tell me how “Spell It Out” came together. To me, it sounds like the world’s first text-message break-up song.
[Laughs] No, that was actually kind of weird, because I originally had different lyrics to that song right up until we went into the studio. I just hated the lyrics I had; I didn’t think the song sounded good at all. I was struggling to find something else, and I just sat there listening to the music over and over again, and it just emerged in my mind as a letter thing instead of a word thing. I jotted it down and presented it to the guys. It fit really well, with only a few minor tweaks, and that was it.

Are you ever afraid of screwing that song up live, because of the way the lyrics run?
I have actually screwed it up before, but we’ve practiced it more than any of the other songs, so now I never mess it up. It was really tough for me at first.
And it turned into a fun little game you played with the fans, forcing them to grab a pen and paper to figure out exactly what you’re saying.
[Laughs] Yeah, but I was wondering afterwards, “Why do I challenge myself and write these song lyrics that are impossible to remember or perform live?” But I guess I just enjoy the challenge. There’s one song on the CD that’s all in Italian. And that seems like one that I would really mess up on, but somehow, I’ve never messed it up. It always surprises me that I’m able to remember it.

With such a spontaneous, raw sound, are any of the songs based on inside jokes?
Well, the song “100 Beers with a Zombie” is based on our roadie, whose name is Zombie Ray. Our guitar player once stayed at his house in Pasadena and drank an amazing amount of beer and was really hungover the next day. He drank “100 Beers with Zombie” Ray.
And I’ve done it a couple times, too. That’s just what happens when you go over to Zombie Ray’s house. He’s got this big table out in the front yard, and by the end of the barbecue, it’s completely full of empty beer cans and everybody passes out on the couch…good times.

Image

What were the D.R.I. guys’ reactions to the PND project?
They thought it sounded pretty good. They were surprised. [Laughs]

What is it about punk-infused metal that keeps it so close to your heart?
Oh, it’s because I like metal but I can’t sing. [Laughs] So when I sing a metal song, it always comes out sounding like punk rock vocals over metal, which makes for a nice crossover deal.

After all these years patrolling the trenches of the underground, what is your motivation to keep going?
Making people happy and not wanting to get a regular job. When Spike (guitarist from D.R.I.) was sick, we had to take a few years off and get a couple straight jobs for a while. I can do it, but just like anybody else, I don’t like it. I’d rather be on stage, travel around and meet people.

Do you have any theories about why this style of gritty crossover metal still holds a strong place in people’s hearts and why it is re-emerging in many contemporary metal bands?
That’s the kind of music that I always liked, so it doesn’t surprise me that other people are now starting to like it. I don’t know; it is kind of weird. When we started out, we wanted to be faster and harder than the other punk bands at the time, and I think we succeeded at that for a while. But then, other bands started cropping up that wanted to be faster and more extreme than D.R.I. And then a lot of the vocal styles changed things, with grindcore and death metal.
But it seems like you can only go so far before people start backing off and shift back down into a lower gear. And I think that’s what a lot of people have done. Either that or they are just going back to their roots. Say the first band you loved happened to be a grindcore band. Eventually, I would hope that you would become interested in how that sound evolved – what their roots were and what their favorite bands were. It’s almost like historical research.
The other thing that is weird happens when we play all-ages shows. We see parents bringing their kids, who are 10-12 years old. And it’s something we never fathomed would ever happen – that they would turn their kids onto it and that they would actually like it. I mean, in my generation, I would have NEVER liked my parents’ music.
But I guess because our generation listens to “cool” music, their kids instantly adapt to it and like it. I can’t imagine a kid saying, “No dad, I don’t wanna go thrash in the pit and stage-dive!” [Laughs] The kids are all over it; they’re singing all the lyrics and everything. It’s like there is a whole new generation of kids getting into this kind of music, and they were guided to it by their parents.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) - Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.metalreviews.com

Image

By Alex

The Dutch young collective Bodyfarm must have spent a good deal of time thinking up their moniker, so my suggestion may sound a little corny. At the same time, since the music calls for this description, I can see other reviewers jumping on my bandwagon. While the Bodyfarm is certainly nice, Bodyslam would have been more fitting. Without pretence and not trying to pull a veil over anybody’s eyes, Bodyfarm prop the flag of Dutch death metal, drinking freely at the well of Pestilence and Asphyx.
After a rousing Into Battle introduction, the real battle ensues with the band/EP eponymous title track. Pounding drums and bass are locked into a lockstep, while monstrous downtuned guitar grooves slam it home – you pretty much know this drill. In a little twist and addition to their Dutch death metal roots, guitars slicing and wheezing, Bodyfarm also borrow a little from the early days of Hypocrisy, the songs’ thrash pickups showing plenty of snarl and catchiness.
As simplistic as Bodyfarm may come off, songs like Slaves of War (beginning with a very Kataklysm-like riff) will definitely send the fans of the genre on headbanging and foot tapping bliss. Rhythmically, Bodyfarm is as solid as they come, but they also know when to spice it up with a quick melodic solo (the end of Slaves of War). In the sign of times, Heartraped suffers from the unfortunate breakdown in the middle, but this quick nod to modernity can be forgiven.
I am not certain how much value can be extracted from the repeated listens to the Bodyfarm EP, but here is one collective which studied their history and reproduces it well, while having total fun doing it. The full-length, which will probably follow, will determine whether Bodyfarm leaves a more distinct and lasting mark.
Killing Songs : Bodyfarm, Slaves of War

MAAX (U.S.) Dawnbringer CD review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Maax are a band from Indianapolis and Munice,Indiana and on this album they played a more raw form of black metal with satanic overtones and this is a review of their 2009 album "Dawnbringer" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums are mostly slow to midpaced playing with some fast drumming and brutal blast beats, while the bass playing has a very heavy sound at times and there is a good mixture of slow and fast riffs being used.

Rhythm guitars are a mixture of slow and midpaced black metal riffs that have a depressive feel at times with some fast riffing and there is also a good amount of thrash influences being utilized, while the lead guitars are primitive guitar solos in the true black metal fashion mixed in with some darker thrash influences and on one song there is some classical guitars being used that have a very melodic feel to them.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams, while the lyrics touch on Satanism, Luciferian and other dark topics, as for the production it is very primitive and raw sounding.

In my opinion while Maax is probably not the most original or even one of the best black metal bands that I have heard, there are still a worthy band and this is worth a listen and adding to your collection if you are a black metal fan. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUD "Dawnbringer" "Veered In Impurity" and "Purge Of Depravity Luciferi Rex". RECOMMENDED

HAT (Norway) Interview by occultblackmetalzine

Image

Posted By OccultBlackMetal (07/06/2010)

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard you before?
Hat started out as Ravner in 1993 with Undertrykker on drums, and Nevresch on guitar and vocals. At the time we had no ambitions, and put the band on hold three years later.
Ten years passed before we hooked up again. We discovered that our demons had grown even stronger than before, and a rehearsal place was located and Hat was re-created.

Image

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
Undertrykker: “The Demise of Mankind” is a traditional Norwegian Black Metal record in every sence. On the new album we have progressed a bit and found our own style. It still sounds like raw black metal, and I am very pleased with the outcome. The new album will be entitled “Vortex of Death” and will contain 8 tracks.
Nevresch: On “Vortex of Death”, we have worked hard to create our own sound. We use samples and sound effects more often than on “The Demise of Mankind”. The sound is extremely aggressive, but all the instruments are well balanced so that details pop out as they should. The new album has a disturbing, Satanic and destructive feel to it. Just like our lives.

3. How would you describe the lyrical content of the music?
Undertrykker: “The Demise of Mankind” was an outlet for my disgust towards the human race. The lyrics are very honest and straight forward. I have always found the sufferings of others very appealing, and that shines through I think.. Embrace Hate!!
Nevresch: The lyrics on “Vortex of Death” are more philosophical. Anti-life, Anti-cosmic and personal disturbance.

4. According to the Metal Archives page you took a 10 year hiatus, what did you during that time period and what made you decide to reform the band under a different name?
Nevresch: I went to school. Tried to live a normal life. I found out that a normal life is not something that fits with my beliefs or values. We are all slaves of organized living, but I try to take as little part of it as possible.
Undertrykker: The name Ravner didn`t suit the state of mind we had when we decided to restart this band. Hat (hate) felt a lot closer to this feeling that had grown inside us. It`s one of the more honest and pure feelings I think.

5. The last album came out on both AntiChristianFront Recs and Abyss Records, how would you describe the support that you have gotten from the 2 labels so far?
Undertrykker: We have been very satisfied with Abyss Records, and they will also release the new album. Dan is working hard to make the label as good as it can be, and that is something we appreciate very much. Check out http://www.officialabyssrecords.com
Would also like to thank AntiChristian Front Recs who made it possible to release “The Demise of Mankind”

Image

6. When can we expect newer material and what direction do you see the music heading into?
Undertrykker: As mentioned earlier we are almost finished with the new album. We don`t have a release date for it yet, as things always takes a lot more time than expected. We are in the finishing stages of the mixing process. The mastering of the album will be done by Tom Kvålsvoll at Strype Audio because we liked what he did on “The Demise of Mankind” and have great respect for his work.

7. Are there any current side projects, if so who are they and what kind of music do they play?
Nevresch: I have a side project called “Det Vidaapne Gap”. I have only recorded one demo called “The Temple of the Mind”. When the new Hat album is out of my head I will continue this work. DVG is not traditional Black Metal. It is introverted, apocalyptic, experimental Black Metal related music. I do not look forward to go into it again, but it is a part of me, and something I have to do.

8. How has the feedback been to the music so far from black metal fans worldwide?
Undertrykker: It seems people still like the old school black metal we have delivered and reviews and feedback has been really good in general.

9. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced the music and what are you listening to nowadays?
Undertrykker: I wouldn`t go as far as to say I have been influenced by any bands in particular, but I grew up with bands like Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Mayhem and such when I was young, so much of my perception of black metal comes from this era.
Nowadays I listen to bands like, Sadistic Intent, Orcustus, Funeral Mist, Bethlehem, and Inquisition. Many other bands as well of course, but mainly black metal or death metal.
Nevresch: This last year, I have been listening to our new songs and ideas mostly. That is how I work with the music I create. I listen to it a lot to be sure of its quality.

10. What role does Satanism, Occultism or Anti Christianity play in the music?
Nevresch: The presence of the force is very important in our music. Call it Satan if you like. It is the force of primeval chaos. It stands above good and evil. Above all man made religions and organized ways of living.

11. What are some of your interests outside of music?
Nevresch: I work as a Graphic designer. I am fascinated with the process of destroying one owns creation to create something new, just like in music. The destruction of creation.

12. Any final words or thoughts?
Hail Chaos!

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) - The Spirit of Warfare CD review by http://www.metalreviews.com

Image

By Alex

When the Abyss Records are saying that their new signing Hyperborean demos were well received, I am in agreement. After all I should know, as I am in possession of all three of them dating back to 2002 Of Malice. After a long break of six years since their last demo, Prey, the Swedes are back with their full-length release The Spirit of Warfare.

Oh how the times have changed for Hyperborean. I still have the photograph with what seemed to be a bunch of young romantics which came with Of Malice. That lineup completely revamped, Hyperborean of 2011 has had a style overhaul as well. Forget the melodic death/black/thrash from Of Malice, gone are female vocal inserts in the style of old In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, there is no trace of any gothic inklings from Thorns Scar Her Soul, but the remainder of Hyperborean (what I surmise are vocalist Magnus Persson and guitarist Andreas Blomquist) remains to be interested in the subject first approached on their last 2005 demo Prey, i.e. military history, especially as it pertains to Europe and war upheavals of that continent in the distant and more recent past.

Suitably then, the youthful exuberance and enthusiasm of Hyperborean earliest works is replaced with razor sharp, shrill, but extremely cleanly produced militaristic harshness, firmly on display in Viper and Channeling the Spirit of Warfare. War conflicts are a vicious subject and Hyperborean music lives the part. The clean tremolo cuts to the bone and drums blast when needed. The songs like Killing Grounds present an ominous, even if fleeting, feeling.

At the same time, Hyperborean can inject mournful pain into their melodic tremolo (A New Sun Rises) or come up with their own personal touch by weaving in very prominent piano lines, absolutely unexpectedly, into the massive wall-of-sound guitar parts in Weapon Mankind and The Sick Man of Europe. Those piano moments are gripping cold fingers of fear permeating the souls of men who march to their death. If earlier Hyperborean looked to the aforementioned melodic death/thrash of In Flames and Dark Tranquillity for influence, nowadays the band is a more direct comparison to Necrophobic and Lord Belial. Hyperborean compositions, now significantly longer and going through a number of parts and tempos, can be towering in their blackened symphonic grandeur, just like The Last Stand of Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae does lashing out at the listener after a softer intro. Acoustic tenderness and melodic solo in the middle of that composition only accentuate the symphonic approach to harsh extreme music subscribed to now by Hyperborean.

The criticism could be that this style of cleaner, well produced melodic black/death metal with symphonic touches has long come and gone through its peak, and Hyperborean are trying to catch the train which is now long departed. I would point out that the band’s vision of their lyrical subject, the Erich Maria Remarque of sorts, is very suitable to the style of music they play, but in my opinion the melodic suit fits Hyperborean so well, they don’t have to discard it all in favor of martial bleakness and austerity.

BANE (Serbia) - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by Orion via http://www.metal-archives.com

Image

By Orion

The Next Big Thing

While I was searching for my dose of Dissection-esque metal, I came across Bane as a recommendation, so I decided to check this album out.

It starts with a fairly uninspired orchestral introduction, paving the way for a relentless assault of melodic black/death metal in the vein of Dissection, imbued with a Belphegor touch with some Emperor spices.

The True Insomnia and Pandemonium are two amazing tracks, full of freezing melodies, layers upon layers of melodic guitars, and acoustics straight from Jon Nodtveidt's textbook. These two tracks are followed by an interlude, which precedes Abhorrence, a song noticeably more ferocious than the aforementioned two.

After that, the album massively slows down in pace. Plague Upon Yourself is one fuck of a black/doom metal song while The Haunting presence's outro features some excellent soloing over slow, crushing riffs.

All in all, the album offers a slab of melodic black/death metal with a lot of variation and huge balls. My only minor complaint is that the first and last tracks are completely useless.

Following up on the success of last year's reissue of the classic Winter Of Sin, Abyss Records is proud to unearth yet another treasure from Norwegian black/death metal warlocks FESTER. "Persecution" recorded in 1991.

Silence is available from Abyss Records at the following location:

"Silence captures a strong atmosphere of harsh, cold, and dismal musical tones. It's great to see this album being reissued."

- Apoch's Metal Review

"I would recommend this album to black metal fans as well as anyone who likes any kind of melodic metal with blackened influence."

- Funeral Rain Zine

"This album is trying to catch the mood of silence and loneliness as perfect as a metal album could ever do so. It is a piece of art that you will recognize easily amongst 100.000 faceless albums."

- Metal-Archives (90/100)

In other FESTER news, the current line up of Bjørn " Tiger " Mathisen (guitars/vocals), Jon Bakker (KAMPFAR, bass), Jotho (RAGNAROK, drums) and Thomas Andresen (vocals) are currently working on material for the band's long-awaited third full-length album. Slated for release later this year, this will be the first time the world has been treated to new music from FESTER in seventeen years. Guitarists Iannis (Nocternity) and Guido (Ysengrin) will be lending their talents to the release and famed ambient/industrial musician Mortiis will provide remixes. Norway's atmospheric masters have returned to once again change the face of black/death metal. Prepare yourselves...

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.minacious.org

Image

By Patrick Schroeder

"Winter of Sin” was originally released in 1992 but thanks to the US. label Abyss Records it is now being re-relapsed so both old and new Black/Death Metal fans can bask in the greatness that is Fester! Fester comes out of the legendary Norwegian underground and lets face it back in the early 1990's no other country came close to releasing great Black Metal like Norway. Fester was definitely ahead of their time and went against the norm (remember this was originally in 93 before Black/Death was blended together by so many) instead of the raw, primitive style that Norway was known for Fester played fast Black Metal but their guitar riffs/chords were a little thicker and even had a few solo's intertwined the riffs to give them a Death Metalish feel and sound. Fester even went a little further to make “Winter a Sin” a "classic" within the Black Metal scene by adding some avant-garde and melodic interludes to their already gloomy and grim sound. Even today in 2011 Fester’s “Winter of Sin” still stands out a great and original masterpiece. Definitely get this if you like original and dark Black Metal.

MAAX (U.S.) Six Pack Witchcraft DIGI CD EP review by occultblackmetalzine.blogspot

Image

Posted by OccultBlackMetal

Maax are a band from Indiana that has been reviewed previously that started out as straight forward black metal but has evolved into a black/thrash metal band with this e.p and this is a review of their release "Six Pack Witchcraft" which was released by Abyss Records during the year of 2010.

Drums are mostly fast with some blast beats being thrown in at times, while the bas playing has the classic thrash meets NWOBHM feel with somewhat of a hardcore punk attitude.

Rhythm guitars are mostly first wave of black metal mixed in with thrash style riffing, while the lead guitars are primitive 80's extreme metal guitar type of solos.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some thrash style gang back up vocals, while the lyrics cover drinking, Luciferian, and some hateful themes with a party attitude, as for the production it is very raw and primal and it gives the music the black metal edge even though this release is more black 'n' roll.

In my opinion this is a little bit better than the last album and I feel this style fits them alot better, hardcore black metal fans might be dissapointed, but fans of beer drinking black/thrash should enjoy this e.p. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Go Fuck Yourself" and "Six Pack Witchcraft". RECOMMENDED BUY.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) Interview by darkdoomgrinddeath.blogspot

Chaossworn Interview Posted by OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

ANTON: Chaossworn is a melodic death/black metal band from Haparanda, northern Sweden. We've been active since the fall of 2004, under the moniker Cryptic Death. The name was changed to Chaossworn in late 2009. We have just released our first MCD called 'Chalice of Black Flames' through Abyss Records.

ANDREAS: Me and Janne played together in various bands/projects back in the 90s, so in a sense Chaossworn dips its rotten roots further back in the dark past!

JANNE: Yup; we’ve been brooding and slithering in the local underground for the last 15 years, but not until now has our message and force become strong enough to be unleashed upon the larger masses. Years and years of honing our skills in the dark are starting to pay off. Now if only we could get David Hasselhoff interested...

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

ANDREAS: Death metal foundation, black metal ambience, heavy metal catchiness. Black/death metal; people should know what it means these days. Heavy emphasis on lead guitar work and harmonies to act counterpoint to non-melodic vocals. Absolutely no happy riffs.

3. What is the meaning behind the band's name?

JANNE: It should be quite clear. We are sworn to Chaos, as opposed to Law. Chaos represents boundless creativity and infinite possibilities, which the strong-willed may utilize to his or her needs or wants. Law stands for conformity and slavery of the mind; it is for the weak who can not, or will not, stray away from the safe path of herd mentality that slowly but surely grinds and forces everyone into the same mold. And as one of the main principles of the band, if not the only one, is to do what the fuck we want - well, I just think that we've found ourselves the perfect name.

4. How would you describe the lyrical content of the music?

ANDREAS: Depends on the song really, since they deal with various subjects, or aspects of those subjects.. It ain't about no urban themes. No matter what the lyrics are about, they're an integral part of the music, and given as much attention in the writing process as the riffs themselves. Phrasings, meter, all that shit, given utmost attention. We're not dishing out tripe.

5. Have you had the opportunity to do any live shows yet, if so what are some of the best shows that the band has played so far?

ANTON: We have been playing live since the start as Cryptic Death. I would say our best show was at Nordic Rage festival in Boden 2008, w/ The Haunted, Carnal Forge, etc..

ANDREAS: The gig we did back in January this year, in Lulea, was pretty intense. Parts of which can be seen on Youtube. Still, Nordic Rage Fest was definitely the biggest in terms of crowd and exposure.

NIKLAS: The black/death metal scene in northern Sweden is not the greatest, but we played a show in Boden on a metal festival called Nordic Rage, which was for me the greatest show!

6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?

ANDREAS: South America; The water gives you the runs, crowd is batshit insane, nobody speaks English. Pandemonium. I heard Poland is pretty kickass too.

JANNE: I think it’d be cool to tour in Kyrgyzstan, or Mongolia. Man, those guys would be astonished to have us banging and snarling at their local yard/palace/mountaintop/whatever. And probably kill us too. Or die trying.

7. What do you want to accomplish with your music?

ANDREAS: I want the music to become as kult as the shit I listen to myself.

JANNE: To me, creating music is first and foremost a tool for self-expression, without which I could not live. Sowing the seeds of the mind, nourishing them with skill and craftsmanship, watching and hearing them grow and blossom in the dark orchards of the spirit of arts, tasting the bittersweet juices from their ripe flesh...thus inspiring the circle to start anew. It is a beautiful thing, creation, and we hold it in our hands. Hopefully our music can also inspire others, as many have inspired us before, and still do. The cycle is most exquisite, and should be kept spinning.

8. What direction do you see the music heading into on future releases?

ANDREAS: We got our sound down just right. What we will do in the future is to produce even fiercer riffs, better hooks, better lyrics and wrap it up time and time again. The material evolved from the last two demos to the MCD growing increasingly darker and unfriendly, and that'll likely continue. Without ambition there's no point in doing anything, and I got plenty ambition. We're destined to outdo ourselves time and time again. Don't expect any genre leaps a la Dodheimsgard.

9. How has the feedback been to your music so far by melodic black.death metal fans worldwide?

ANDREAS: We wouldn't release it if it wasn't up to snuff. Reviewers agree!

NIKLAS: Mixed. People in Sweden have been more critical than the rest of the world. Dunno why is that.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and what are you listening to nowadays?

ANTON: Bloodbath, Desultory and Necrophobic, and of course bands from other genres.

ANDREAS: Been listening to Tiamat “Clouds” a lot lately. I got a few tapes in the car getting regular windings: Bathory "Blood Fire Death", Darkthrone "Under a Funeral Moon", ZZ Top "Eliminator" etc.

NIKLAS: Old school death metal bands like Desultory and Morbid Angel.

JANNE: All music influences me all the time. The atmosphere of Limbonic Art and Emperor; the creativity of Faith No More and Meshuggah; the vibe of Kingston Wall and Änglagård; the harmonizing craft of Bach and Rachmaninoff; the earnestness of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Grand Magus etc etc...I could go on for ages.

11. Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in the music?

ANDREAS: Yes.

JANNE: Yes.

12. What are some of your interests outside of music?

ANDREAS: I'm a history scholar.

NIKLAS: Drinking beer and go to festivals!

JANNE: NHL, literature and whiskey.

ANTON: Sound engineering and sailing.

13. Any final words or thoughts?

ANDREAS: You can't stop rock n roll.

JANNE: Fuck the Law.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by http://foulfeast.blogspot.com

Image

By Combustion

Those of you that read the review for Winter of Sin already know my strong feelings toward that album. Their debut was without a doubt one of the most unique albums to come out in that period of time and due to the band's standout sound they didn't quite break into the scene. That being said those of you who have continued to put Fester on the backburner will be hating themselves the instant they put on either of their albums. This is good, real good.

One thing that made Winter of Sin was that it has a very distinctive sound. The band seamlessly blend a number of genres and in the process make something that can only be described as Fester. The music featured on Silence is far from menacing, they embrace a style that is dripping with mysticism and is surrounded with a very gloomy atmosphere. Many of the tracks on the album have a feel that can almost be described as laid back. "The Maze" is strangely very calming as well as a few others tracks featured on the album. Fester is one of those bands that make music that you can truly get lost in, the content here is simply mesmerizing.

With this album Fester takes a more traditional approach in terms of guitar playing. The riffs here wouldn't seem out of place on some of the classic metal albums that were brought to us in the late 70's/early 80's. In more ways than one Silence is less extreme in terms of sound than the debut is. Though the album is still heavy it is hard to describe it as aggressive. One of the biggest standout tracks on the album is "Voices From the Woods". The song features one of the most enchanting choruses in metal history and features melodies that are stunning. Much like on the first release the vocals consist of weak and distant black metal esque shrieks with the occasional clean thrown in. This style fits what Fester plays well and is extremely unusual. Those who are just getting into the band may have a hard time adjusting to the vocals but overall it is all a matter of taste.

Overall Fester has impressed me once again even with my ridiculously high expectations. Fans of music in general need to get both this and Winter of Sin, if you have functioning ears you will not be disappointed. In a world where you often have trouble distinguishing one band from another Fester is one of the few exceptions that by the time the first note is played you immediately know the band, album, and track that is being played. Without a doubt this band was far ahead of it's time and they deserve a lot more respect than they currently get.
