BANE (Serbia) - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by Zlabog via http://www.metal-archives.com

Image

By Zlabog

A more than decent start!

After hearing this album, it is no wonder why so many labels cooperated to release this album on CD, Digi-CD & MC version. BANE, a rather unknown Serbian Extreme Metal band in the underground scene, with this album might turn everything 180 degrees.
Since this is the first review for this album, let`s start off with a quick introduction. From their formation in 2006, after one Demo in 2007 and a short EP in early 2010, the band finally presents us their first full-length album, and it was well worth the wait.
“Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness” was recorded in HellSound Studio (Czech Republic), and was recorded/mixed/mastered by Honza “Butcher” Kapak, who is previously known for his works in Judas Iscariot, Nargaroth, Maniac Butcher, (etc…) and for being the mastermind behind Avenger (CZ). The artwork is done by Marcelo Vasco (Belphegor, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Vader, Keep Of Kalessin, etc…), so there is no need to comment that part of this release, as it really is perfect.
Since the album concept is divided in 3 parts, let`s review them separately.
Chapter I – CHAOS:
The album starts off with a rather typical sounding intro – orchestral instruments, choirs, melodies and harmonies that predict evil is near. After the intro finished, and the second song kicked in the 20th second, it was indeed – Chaos. Clear production, pummeling double bass drumming, razor sharp guitars, with various growls & screams all over the place. Fast, furious & precise, a perfect mixture of Black/Death Metal, the band clearly combined elements of early Dissection, Dark Funeral and Behemoth to create a unique atmosphere and sound of their own. Generally the first third of this album is the most aggressive part of the album, and perhaps the fastest, with not too many tempo changes but yet no monotone parts – just “straight up your face” music – lots of blast-beats, fast double bass, evil guitar lines, and tones of various vocal types which covered everything from the more standard growls & screams, up to some shouts. The end of this era has a rather “creepy” ending, and without any blank spots leaves use to the next chapter…
CHAPTER II – DARKNESS
Starting of with a nice short acoustic instrumental, the band simply continues to bring good ideas, and the album continues without any unnecessary elements. Full of catchy melodies and various vocals, this chapter is much more richer tempo changes, combining furious Black/Death Metal with, this time, slower acoustic elements, which really has a nice ambient, specially after the first part of the album which was more about intensity and aggression. This part for some listeners may be considered a less “commercial” one than the previous, but nevertheless is very digestible and totally fits in the context and description – Darkness. It is slightly more dark and moody, yet retaining the atmosphere of the whole album, keeping it still very compact, but different than the rest. Musically a quite pleasant trip the band brought us.
CHAPTER III - EMPTINESS
The last part of the album starts of, contrary to the first two, immediately with a full song. This would definitely be the most melodic part of the album, with less various vocal lines, and with a more “standard” approach the songs, concerning the arrangements. By hearing only this part, the impression of a Black Metal band gets almost totally lost, as with the clean production and melodies played here, it sound too “commercial” for anything to be called “Black Metal”. Mainly this parts main focus is the simplicity of creating very nice and easy-listening songs, which have more of a Doom/Death Metal approach. Before the outro, the last song is more or less a Doom Metal piece – relatively slow and Melodic, very pleasant to hear after all the Black/Death insanity. The album finishes with another instrumental track, where only the keyboards slowly fade away in the cold depression…a perfect ending for this album. Again totally fitting everything into the concept of this masterpiece, the perfect word to describe the ending of the album – Emptiness.
Conclusion:
This album may not be the most original Black/Death Metal piece of art, but it is most certainly one of those albums where there is absolutely nothing bad to say about it. Absolutely everything is put in it`s place, where it should be. The production is perfect for this genre – guitars cover widely all the frequencies so they are neither too low or too high, the drums have a very natural sound yet the bass drum is high pitched/triggered, the bass can be heard in some parts where it plays some sort of lead. The length of this material is just enough to represent everything what should have been said and played in those 40 minutes of music. The diversity of vocals added a special “charm” to this recording which make them easy to follow and very interesting, and to have them combined so well with all the different musical elements really makes it unique, and ready for another listen.
All in all, “Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness” in an album which will positively surprise many Black/Death Metallers, both old school oriented and modern fans. And an extra bonus it that this album is available in different formats, which allows us collectors to purely enjoy the Underground in it`s best form.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) Chalice of Black Flames CD EP review by autothrall via http://www.metal-archives.com

Image

By autothrall

Wielding unclean malice

A successful union between the black and death metal formats is trickier than one might assume, despite the two styles' natural aesthetic overlap and general acceptance within each others' rabid fan bases. Often we have turned to Sweden for such transference, and bands like Dissection, Lord Belial, Sacramentum, The Crown, and to a lesser extent Marduk or Dark Funeral have all paved the way for a number of younger acts who wish to keep their sounds expansive by incorporating elements from both of these extremities. The worst of these will sound glaringly foolish as they ramble to and forth, trying to fit each mold and winding up in some awkward space that honors neither.

The best of these will simply transfuse their own creative energies with the influences of both overarching genres and transition to something personal and convincing. Chaossworn is not the 'best' of anything, but they do successfully conjure a spark of depressive, dense gloom here on this official EP pressing of their Chalice of Black Flames demo, a mellower alternative to, say, Sacramentum, with vocals that range from tearing rasps to a massive growling depth which recalls Mikael Åkerfeldt (perhaps Bloodbath more so than Opeth). Most impressively, these Swedes, who had existed for years prior as the demo level act Cryptic Death, are capable of writing a sequence of riffs that explore a multitude of downward climes and harrowing emotions without ever tiring the listener, so this is 15 minutes that might be worth sharing if you appreciate the moodier hybrid bands.

"Crowned & Winged" begins with a pattern of storm and gentle acoustic guitar presence that transforms into some heavily atmospheric, moody melodic death metal, plucking rhythms counteracted by thundering double bass and rampant Dissection-like riffs. "Bringer of Storms" emits a thick, bludgeoning wall of black conjuration interlaced with deep melodies that hang upon the precipice of the attention span, ;ater breaking into a series of carnal verses and slower passages over which a deep, gothic narrative vocal will join in the growling. "Chalice of Black Flames" itself might mislead the listener into a 'lull', deceptively the least aggressive of the three compositions, but by far the most evil and ensnaring if you can plumb its ominous depths.

The material falls somewhere short of stunning, yet competent and well-balanced enough that it should see the band forward for a longer playing effort. Certainly I would suggest a fan of the aforementioned bands check this out, for you might be surprised. I was also reminded of a few of the better tracks off the new Watain record, which rate a similar feel of dense production and possession. There is nothing crude about Chaossworn, and they have a promising future if they can pull off some slightly more memorable fare to indulge all who submit to their sweeping, weeping black flame fathoms.

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD (US pressing) review by http://www.southerndarkness.net

Image

By southerndarkness.net
Diabolical 15 years has caused confusion among the closed minds, constantly progressing, and refusing to do what expected. In his early work, "Deserts of Desolation" (mini album 2000) and "Synergy" (2001) Diabolical always stood out as different from the classic death metal bands of the period, representing a complicated thing to categorize a style.
The reception from fans and the press was good from the start, resulting in extensive coverage in the media of the time.
Following the success of second album "A Thousand Deaths" (2002) the band played shows in Europe several times over the years from 2002 to 2003 with Amon Amarth, Vomitory and Defleshed among others, starred in the Open Hell Festival (2002), and Kaltenbach Open Air (2003).

The disks were then re released in South America and also in the U.S..
Between 2004 and 2008 the band only did a few live performances due to the intense and growing work producing other bands Widgren in Necromorbus Studio.
But in 2008, after several years of problems with different labels, Diabolical made his return with all his strength and left a masterpiece in the Death metal leaving listeners in the darkest depths of the human mind to attract the repressed aggression hunger for revenge to life in "The Gallery of Bleeding Art".
The album received glowing reviews and was followed by two small but very successful tours throughout Europe.

In November 2010 Diabolical out the single "Eye", and now, in February through Abyss Records comes the latest work called "Ars Vitae", which contains 17 tracks from different eras of the band's career. This album was recorded at Studio Necromorbus in 2010, and was again produced by Sverker Widgren founding member. Also the CD contains a live concert that was never released, and a remastered version of "Deserts of Desolation" MCD, and exhausted for years.

Having been part of the Death Metal scene for 15 years and releasing albums for over a decade, Diabolical in "Ars Vitae" brings out the best of his work until today, showing that the band is progressing and has a great future ahead!
Strongly recommended for new generations and more veterans who want to have the best of one of the greatest exponents of Swedish Death Metal!

BODYFARM (Netherlands) - Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.slugmag.com

Image

By Bryer Wharton

Bodyfarm
S/T
Abyss Records
Street: 04.26
Bodyfarm = Vader + Pestilence + Bolt Thrower
Sometimes we all have the need to go to a fancy restaurant and dine on fancy goodies, but really, all you need is a good old burger to satisfy. Bodyfarm offer up simplicity in good old 90s death metal, heavy in the groove department and not fully focused on blazing speedthe band's debut runs in at around 17 minutes, though it's quite the fulfilling 17 minutes. The self-titled album offers some boisterously beefy death metal riffing, pounding drums and straight-up death metal guitar soloing. There is always comfort in what you know, constantly looking in music to find something new and exciting is eventually going to get you lost. The production on this EP is damn fine and the bass is tuned in perfectly to give the songs the heaviness they need and showcase the outright riff-machine Bodyfarm delivers.

5 Questions With Bodyfarm

Image

By Chad Bowar

5 Questions With... is your chance to get to know a new or up-and-coming metal band. Bodyfarm is a death metal group from the Netherlands who just released their self-titled debut EP. Vocalist/guitarist Thomas Wouters introduces us to his band.
Give us a brief history of Bodyfarm.
Bodyfarm started as a two-man project in the late summer of 2009. Quint (drums) and I (vox/guitars) wanted to play true death metal, without being especially innovative, technical or refreshing. After a few months we entered the studio to record our debut EP and then Bram (guitars) and Mathieu (bass) joined us to help us out on stage. Since then we have played all over the country, and sometimes in Germany.

Image

How would you describe the sound of your EP?
Raw! The production is clear, but still brutal and heavy. We are very pleased with what Harry from Oerknal Studios did. The tracks on it are dark and aggressive, and contain many old school ingredients, loads of blastbeats, and fast leads.

What are your plans for a full-length CD?
Currently we are finishing the last material for the full-length. I hope we can finish the last track in two weeks so we can start the pre-recordings. We hope to enter the studio by September. The full-length will contain eleven tracks, including a cover from a death metal classic. We are so looking forward to this because these new tracks are crushing!

Image

How's the underground metal scene in your area of the Netherlands?
It's a very select group of passionate people who really love the underground, I believe. There are loads of death metal fans, but since every major tour comes to Holland 2 or 3 times in different venues, most people seem a bit spoiled and don't seem to really care about the underground. When we play in Germany, the venue is loaded. In Holland not so much...

What are your upcoming live show/tour plans?
We have a few club shows planned for this year. There will be more, but we also want to focus on our full-length. You can't do loads of gigs and record an album at the same time.

Image

Anything else you'd like to mention or promote?
First of all, thank you for this interview. I'd like to mention that our EP is for sale at http://www.officialabyssrecords.com and soon to be released in jewel case with booklet. There will be other merch, too. To all you passionate death metal fans out there: you'd really support us by checking this one out and spreading the news!

Dimensions: 8.5″ x 11″ x 2″; 5.5 lbs (2.5kg)
Forewords by Ian Christe, Tomas Lindberg, Chris Reifert, Fenriz, Stephen O’Malley, Erik Danielsson, and Tara G. Warrior

“Metalion and his Slayer Mag are responsible for me (and a lot of other Swedes) getting into the death metal underground… I clearly remember how proud I was when Grotesque got a mention in the classic mag—this meant more to me than anything else at the time!”—Tomas Lindberg, Grotesque/At the Gates/Disfear

“The legendary Slayer zine gets its long overdue anthology”—Decibel

“Presiding over the birth of extreme metal from its Scandinavian heartland, the first issue of the legendary Slayer fanzine was cranked out in 1985 and over the years shifted its coverage to provide an insider view of Swedish death metal and Norwegian black metal through their formative and most controversial years.”—Terrorizer

“Best idea since sliced bread.”—Fenriz

The greatest heavy metal story ever told—the complete tale of a life lived for metal. Part anthology, part memoir, and years in the making,
METALION

includes over 600 reproduction pages from every issue of
Slayer Mag

Slayer 1

through
Slayer XX

, plus the precursor
Live Wire

zine—spanning from the early 1980s through 2010. In addition, author Jon Kristiansen recounts his life’s story, from alienated outsider to central figure in Norwegian black metal to metal party beast to world-weary metal survivor. The book also features over 100 rare photographs, including two color sections and a portrait gallery of photographs taken by Kristiansen himself.

For twenty-five years, Norway’s Slayer Mag published the gospel of black metal and death metal, combining eye-ripping graphics, brutally honest writing, and relentless offbeat humor. With this anthology/memoir, editor Jon “Metalion” Kristiansen unfolds the extreme highs and lows of a life lived for heavy metal. Founded in 1985 in Sarpsborg, Norway, Slayer Mag quickly rose to prominence by championing countless unsigned death metal pioneers. The pages of Slayer Mag exploded along with the extreme metal underground, and as black metal rose to prominence in Norway in the 1990s, Slayer Mag remained the final word on the moods and motivations of those dark times.

The astonishing combination of archival material includes scores of key historic interviews with the most revered figures in extreme metal, including Mayhem, Emperor, Slayer, Kreator, Nihilist, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Cathedral, Entombed, Morbid, Napalm Death, Metallica, Opeth, Cradle of Filth, Sadistik Execution, Usurper, Nifelheim, Darkthrone, Sodom, Destruction, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Exodus, Dissection, Candlemass, Carcass, Sepultura, Gorgoroth, Death, Watain, Sadus, Satyricon, Enslaved, Pentagram, Jarboe, Immortal, Possessed, Overkill, Ulver, Dark Angel, and countless others.

“From the start, I made Slayer Mag as honestly and as well as I could,” says Kristiansen. “I never knew any other way. I hope that I have produced something that will stand the test of time.”

Diabolical (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD (US pressing) review by http://www.metalmaniacs.com

Image

By Janet Willis (Defacation of the Divine)

Instantly this one caught me by the throat and a with a swift crack across my skull it was apparent that nothing else sounds entirely like Diabolical and they embody that title to the fullest extent possible. Part technical death metal, skilled and unique, unpredictable, and yet so smooth and perfectly executed like a surgical incision, this band brings fury and unrelenting chaos back to the melodic and often abused technical/prog element in death/black metal. The symphonic elements only amplify the certain grim and suspenseful atmospheres in each track, sort of like the intro to a great horror film with images of mutilation and abominations being exacted as the story unfolds. There’s also a slight post-industrial feel in some of the effects that give some of the tracks a masochistic and mildewed grey cement dungeon, regardless of what the hell this band does on here, it creates a massive collision of brutality and skill that rivals many and proves that not all things melodic/symphonic/cinematic are wasteland of sorrow and pity, this is an asshole ripper!!!!!! Think technical on the level of mid to late era Death (Symbolic, The Sound of Perseverence, Individual Thought Patterns), some Amorphis, and you’ll get the idea of where the skill and brutality fuse perfectly

Opening up with the eerie neo classical horror film intro of “Ortus”, you instantly know you’re treading in dangerous crimson saturated waters lit with the bright yellow and orange flames that scour the Earth as the war rages on through “Sightless 6”. The intricate arpeggios and melodic lines beneath the fury and pestilence of this track lead you further into some violent apocalyptic scenario full of blood and metal clashing.

“InFuitable Fatum” starts in from some hollow distance, somehow reverberating through a haze of death from the silence and sudden vanishing left by the ending of the previous track “Sightless 6”. Slowly the single solo guitar becomes clearer and nearer like a stalking threat about to become materialized and your skin tingles as the suspense builds through desolate melodic bits and more elements add as you get closer to the climax which explodes upon you with full force and makes your heart skip a beat or two.

Now we come to the all powerful “Eye” with lyrics about the “…crack of a whip beats you into submission…” , “…I see through all your lies…” , “…surrender to emptiness…” just makes my decision on this one easier as a masterpiece of its own creating and highly recommended to everyone who wants something genuine, melodic, aggressive and brutal, seething with hate, but with clean production and graceful deliverance as opposed to raw and bare. This motherfucker is one of those tracks that actually leaves you hanging because nothing else in your mind will compare to the rush you’ve experienced through this 6 minutes of misanthropy and overthrowing submission and ignorance.

“Guidance of Sin” takes a raw and occultic, yet violent black metal sound in vocal style and keeping with the symphonic and technical this track completely restores your faith in the lack of faith in humanity and could possibly even cause injuries to those around you as it inspires you to thrash about and take revenge.

All in all, if you’re going to be a true individualist, this will be a great anthem to further ignite your rebellious nature. Question everything and accept nothing as pure truth, even though hopefully I’ll be convincing enough to get you to consider this release, plus it will obliviate you both physically and mentally!!!!!

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.minacious.org

Image

By Mordant

Let’s start at the beginning, Fester is a Norwegian band that started back in 1989 and this is their debut full-length album, released in 1992, now re-released with one bonus track. If I have understood it correctly they recently re-formed with an almost entirely new line-up and they are working on a third full-length. This is a great album, a real overlooked gem, I have the original releases and I will definitely get the re-releases. The music is more of a blend of early Death Metal, Doom Metal and the embryo that would eventually be known as Norwegian Black Metal. But I would call this Death Metal, really raw Death Metal with a cold and eerie atmosphere. This is a great album, get it now.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) - The Spirit of Warfare CD review by mundorockheavy.blogspot.com

Image

By mundorockheavy.blogspot.com

After having almost lost the trail after the release of their first two demos in 2002 and 2003, respectively, "Of Malice" and then "Scar Her Soul Thorns" something I did intuit that these Swedes could point it at the top, and that at least in terms of musical approach had all reasons to achieve. The technical and melodic black metal to which they referred in these first deliveries since then has been taking shape achieving adequate purification and wisdom that only time can give, and at this point is that we are not talking just another imitation of band to the eternal references to people like Immortal or Satyricon, here on the contrary, we have a group that has demonstrated for years in the shadows of the underground, a solid proposal on the technical and has finally managed to edit the first officially album, in sound and composition as fully impacted us.
For those who do not know yet, Hyperborean currently consists of Magnus Persson on vocals (much like Dissection), Andreas Blomqvist on guitar and Max Lindberg on bass, with the presence occasional session drummer Fredrik Widigs for recording plate. Those wanting to enter the field more melodic black felt triumphant welcome from the start "Channelling the Spirit of Warfare" a bill temazo epic, with great rhythmic changes (something that will set the tone throughout the entire work) , some intricate guitar rhythms and a superb demonstration after the patches by Widigs. Everything always with a particularly dark aura, which continued into the perverse "Weapon Mankind", more integral to sound as though Dissection more per day. Magnus's voice, halfway between the black and death metal, a special brutality permeates the atmosphere of each of the tracks of the plate, in fact, the rhythms of the above subjects and also of "Viper" contain a dizzying punch on drums with melodies too close to the eighties thrash. However, in my opinion is the most a half-time are much more interesting compositions. Are no less than seven tracks, but all with a broad MINUTES indeed the shortest is four minutes and ten longest borders, highlighting the absolutely insane atmosphere and with typically Scandinavian air found in "The Last Stand of Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae "obviously inspired by the Greek epic battles also came to cinema-style film" 300. " Much more visceral and direct are also another couple of songs like "A New Sun Rises" and "Killing Grounds," the latter as close to traditional black metal content. A great contribution of band, and is that after almost ten years of experience in this case time has not passed in vain paying off as it should be. HAT (Norway) - Vortex of Death DIGI CD review by autothrall via http://www.metal-archives.com

Image

By autothrall

Whirlwind of bones and cinders

Hat is another of the recent crop of Norse black metal acts that I felt I could go either way on, but they've thankfully incorporated enough of an adventure into their sophomore Vortex of Death that I found myself drawn back to its contents a number of times, thanks to some savvy riffing, decrepit atmosphere and hints of experimentation which leave the safety and sanctity of their primary genre for a balanced, atmospheric leverage that simply functions. The material is often as primal and ambivalent as the next underground band, but enough thoughts are provoked through its composition that a close listen will reveal thoughtful passages of repressed synthesizers, whispered dialog/vocals and other tricks of the night.

However, it doesn't always shake the straightforward blast and weave of sobering familiarity, and there are moments of "Inhumanus Revelatio", "Overmenneske" or "The Flesh I Wear" which are hardly as compelling as others within the very same tracks. The guitars are thin and bristling, the drums barely noticed without their crashing vortices of support for the rasping and tearing of the vocals. On the whole, this level of sound actually suits the material quite well, because it creates a pattern of depth, like one being in front of the other, as if the band were playing at you from a series of hills, each piled with bones and cinders. The result is that some of the moodier, slower pieces like "The Path to Immortality", or the shifting "Invocating Death" with its stark and engrossing bridge sequence gone mad with rushing, blood stream riffs that channel eerie beauty, are well worth hearing even if the album is not entirely consistent.

I'll admit that I don't remember much about the band's debut The Demise of Mankind, but I can recall the band's name and logo, and with Vortex of Death, I'll be sure to keep them on my watch list. The delivery here is not stunning, nor staggering, but both convex and insular. Evil, and at its very best, mildly alien in composition, which is always sure to draw the ear deeper than your run of the mill black metal album about forests, snow and Satan. Not that Hat are writing about ponies, mind you, the band's name is Norwegian for hate, and their music is neither comfortable nor compromising, but they will not betray your attention span with needless, excess repetition or recycling all of the precise tropes that you might have grown tired of over the past 20 years they were hammered into you.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) - Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.metal.de

Image

By Stephan

"We are not doing something new, we're just doing what sounds good to us and try to keep it relatively primitive." The Dutch band BODY FARM about themselves and their music. This setting is also audible in every second on the self-titled debut EP in 2009 founded band - this is not tried, is not joking, this is simply ordinary Death Metal geholzt the old school, sometimes more Swedish style-oriented (both influences be of GRAVE and Dismember are heard), sometimes more is on American (especially the early CANNIBAL CORPSE homage to "Body Farm"ever again).
This is as far right and can do what: The opening title track (after a half-minute, much to the compatriots HAIL OF BULLETS reminiscent intro "Into Battle") brings the neck muscles first with a hearty, slow-building beginning to warm up before then losgebolzt is, the subsequent "Final Redemption"feels a bit like a tribute to Morbid Angel and the final two tracks "Heartraped" and "Slaves Of War" do what quotes and praises towards the old heroic terms no concessions. The whole thing is presented with a sound that still sounds neat in the old school, but would you do in places especially the drums sound a little more oomph.
The Innovation Award will be BODY FARM so with their debut EP not win - do they indeed did not. The four songs (plus intro above) can be best enjoyed if you treat them as a tribute to the old values of the Death Metal scene. That's extremely fun and also expresses great on the tube, but ultimately not enough for more than a solid six points.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.metalteamuk.net

Image

By Martin Harris

Having reviewed this bands debut album reissue earlier this year I was expecting more of the same, but it turns out that at the time the band was going through all sorts of trouble with their label and musical differences. Like “Winter Of Sin” this is released as a digipack with a bonus live track from 1991. It is a fair to say that Norwegian death and thrash acts in 1991 to 1995 were severely neglected due to the feuding black metal scene at the time. Interestingly enough Euronymous was killed during the recording of “Silence” catalysing interest from mags and zines for the wrong reasons hoping for some sort of scoop on the Euronymous incident, which at the time the perpetrator was mystery.
Anyway enough history back to the album. “Silence” was a departure from the doom death oppression of the debut as this remastered album has a cleaner sound though the chilling atmosphere is here in huge proportions. Quite why the original cover artwork has not been included is a mystery as the cover was more fitting than the new one. Beginning with “Dream” the acoustic guitar and bass kick/hi-hat work is eerie as the song shifts into a slow double bass kick that reminded me of the debut album by The Gathering (“Always”) before they brought Anneke in. The vocals by Rolf Simonsen are like a harsh whisper with a drifting echo effect on them creating a surreal and despondent feel, especially with the excellent lead. Bjorn ‘Tiger’ Mathisen takes on vocal duties for the harsher style used on “Silent Is The Raven” and are very reminiscent of Rotting Christ on their “Thy Mighty Contract” and “Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers” albums which is interesting as this album came out the same year as the former and three years before the latter. The pace of the song is slow but not doom slow by any means. Rotting Christ comparisons abound on “Frustrations” which is damn fine by me as the vocals have a spoken quality and lots of riff trickery and very subtle changes.
“The Maze” exemplifies why this band was unique at the time and I am slightly annoyed with myself for not picking up on them in the early 90s as I really did miss a treat. The song is as dark and oppressive as the debut and if anything there is an intimidating feel as each track makes you sit up and listen very intently. I know this was out before “Triarchy…” but the beat, emotion and delivery of “The Conformists” is so like that album it makes me wonder if RC got any influences from Fester. “Voices From The Woods” has some synths on it which add to the creepiness but as ever Fester surprise you with a tangential change to double bass that seems like its in slow motion creating a gloomy and moody ethos. “Growing Thirst” has some great riff switching as the song is the quickest on the album and again matched by ever changing riffs and beats. “Nar Noen Dor” was added originally because their label said the album was short on playing time. This song was put together by Tiger on keyboards with only guitar and a spoken vocal line in Norwegian (their only one without English lyrics). The song has a poignant feel matching Tiger’s mood after losing a friend to suicide. The song is a sombre moment on an album packed with solemnity and sadness. The live track is out of kilter with the rest of the album and whilst bonus tracks are needed for selling purposes I’ll never listen to it with the rest of this album as the two are just too disparate to compare. The live song is “Persecution” and sounds better than the live stuff on “Winter Of Sin” and is as you’d expect, gritty, raw and unfettered by modernistic sound engineering. I would strongly urge you to check out this bands music if you’re into old Rotting Christ, early Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, old Katatonia, old Opeth, early Anathema, I’m sure you get the picture now.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) - The Spirit of Warfare CD review by http://www.metalcorefanzine.com

Image

By Chris Forbes

HYPERBOREAN/The Spirit Of Warfare (Abyss Records) Now this is more like it as this band
just whipped my neck into fury with their death metal style. Wicked riffs along with some
killer drum parts and vocals made this a winner. The riffs on here were completely awesome
as they totally crushed and didn't seem generic or awful at all. This is a band doing
something a bit different, but still having enough of a melody to them and also not
slowing down in the speed department neither. A really cool release of death metal that
is not of the norm.

I believe the reviewer meant to call Hyperborean Black Metal, but you can be the judge...

BANE (Serbia) - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by http://www.minacious.org

Image

By Mordant
This is the debut album from this Serbian Black/Death Metal band, this band seems to have been plagued by problems, they have released very little since they started (in 2006) and have almost gone through ten members before settling on the current line-up. But enough about that. The music, dark and harsh Black Metal with a lot of Death Metal influences, sometimes Melodic, sometimes even a bit Epic, but always raw and brutal. This is a very good album, but it lacks a voice of their own, and it's at times a bit forgettable, the music doesn't really stick, but in an album or two they will most likely find their own voice and sound and then Bane will be a really interesting band instead of “just” a good band.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) - Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://forbidden-magazine.com

Image

By Arsen

Amidst the sea of breakdowns, pig squeals, and all things core, comes a band that’s traditional and non-conforming. Bodyfarm, named from the institutions that examine and study the deceased and decomposition of dead flesh, is a straight up no BS death metal project with pure energy and substance. Along the same lines as Vader, Vomitory, or Cannibal Corpse in that their sound is stripped-away aggressive death metal. No gimmicks so to speak, just the music free from the pressures of mediocre innovations and the rising deathcore movement. I’m pleased to say these guys might have accidentally stumbled upon something refreshing.
Just the intro entitled “Into Battle”, is particularly suspenseful and gripping, a perfect opener and accent to their sound. It sets the pace and rolls right into the title track “Bodyfarm.” A primal and aggressive track that progresses seamlessly, it keeps you interested and hanging until the abrupt ending. It’s followed by “Final Redemption” a slower paced, grimy track that’s reminiscent of some memorable heavy death anthems, Bloodbath’s Eaten comes to mind.
Then we are brought to “Heartraped”, a sub par love track. This is where I meet a bit of confusion. The EP seams to lose a bit of momentum here as they go for a more streamlined formula with a bit of thrash. Also the lyrical content is a bit weak and disappointing. With a title like “Heartraped”, you can expect the lyrics to wonder into mainstream mushiness and it does. Other than that the track is well structured and the vocals are just as heavy so it may be just me. The final track on this self titled debut is “(Slaves of War).” My personal favorite as it is just as brutal as the rest while showing some versatility. It starts out and you swear you’re listening to Amon Amarth, then Thomas Wouters’s gutturals come in and remind you this is Bodyfarm. His vocals are medium range death growls similar to those of Stephen Kummerer (Obscura) or Corpsegrinder (Cannibal Corpse), which are more traditional and fit the style perfectly. The vocals and the bass stand out in my head as the more prominent elements.
Their vocals and sound on this album constantly remind me of another, the 2009 album (Carnage Euphoria) by Vomitory. They no doubt must have been influenced by these guys, but elaborated and evolved into their own entity. I personally like Thomas’ vocals better than Erik Rundkvist’s (Vomitory). Not to give them a hard time or anything, I just think Erik’s vocals are a bit more guttural and he shows a bit more versatility. He adds extra stuff in here and there that really make the track more enjoyable, like in the beginning of their EP closer “Slaves of War”.
Although they had non-refreshing intentions, the way they choose not to conform to any trend and belt out uncompromising traditional death metal should satisfy and attract a ton of plain old fashioned death metal fans. Not to mention top tier vocal talent that would please any brutal death head. Overall unique and relentless this is an EP that keeps you knee deep in each track. If you like un-innovative traditional death metal like Cannibal Corpse and Bloodbath, then you should definitely check out Bodyfarm. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the near future.

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.vs-webzine.com

Image

By Dark Rabbit

While there the children if you want the home kvlte kvlte, you will be served! Here we touch the finger at a form of absolute, sublime! So young, Abyss Records has made up his mind to reissue the debut album from 1992 Fester. Go old, lifts his legs were very high! But do a little archeology. Long ago, a young Swede named Thomas Nyquist metal moved by the excitement crackling around him, decided to start a zine saddled with the sobriquet of Putrefaction country Mag. Kvlte ! Kvlte! Stitches in Time and strength of commitment, our young hairy eventually founded the label No Fashion Records. Kvlte power spin a mile beginning of erection to our national Zoltar!

"Winter of Sin" is the second release of the label and the first to be pressed on CD. But be careful, I can already see that this is still sigh of Death Metal from Stockholm. Well actually, it's not quite it. First, our lads are not studded Swedes and Norwegians, but especially our long-haired hell of Music offers a rather unique. Particular, use the term loosely because actually it goes back to that time between wolves and dogs when stylistic boundaries were completely porous.

Okay, but the Death of heavy, slow, this copula as well with Black Sabbath, as Bathory or Death. Florida's influence is present especially in solos or all of these ornate bridges instrumental riffs typical of the era. Somewhere and being a little provocative, take the first album Paradise Lost, remove it the gothic atmosphere and replace it with the excitement of the glorious past Nordic warrior. He must lose one eye to see it but there's a Viking on the mountain trying to invoke the gods. Death is therefore a good Doomy away by the epic of a black-based melodic tremolo and sublimated few passages at the keyboard, narratives and more atmospheric passages while melancholic arpeggios. And then there's this song Crow éructée flayed by a vocalist halfway between Schuldiner and Burzum which plunges us deeper into the intricacies of Black.

From a sound point of view, our Scandinavian adventure has been remastered and thus provides sound quality quite acceptable by today's standards. The risk still remains to be shocked for those who are accustomed Beats Bionic enriched synthetic products. The sound is good but it's kind of good roots.

Except a few bonus live song from 1991 and produced their first demo. A title filled with enough air instrumental passages that roams on a good ten minutes. The sober but gigipack class and the book recalls a brief history of the group and the concert in question while delivering a few amusing anecdotes. Personally, I like enough to immerse myself in the context of the time.

Surprisingly, even today the proposed mix remains relatively relevant because it is quite unusual to hear such an alloy types. I have already mentioned but at the time all these beautiful streams which now cause life crises in your servant, were less marked. All these beautiful people mingled merrily without worrying about if it were Death or Black or whatever else ... It must be said that in the land of the Vikings, Bathory has influenced both the Death Black.

Ultimately, we are dealing with an album prehistoric but keeps its freshness in relation to a certain conformism and platitudes that plague some of our wild world. A truly rejuvenating nostalgic for wrinkly like me and maybe an object of curiosity for the young history buffs.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by aristocraziawebzine

Image

By Mourning

In recent months we've had to do with reality Norwegian Fester, running the planks of the reviews you will find is that it included the reissue of the debut album "Winter Of Sin" (1992), is one that refers to the compilation "The Commitments That Shattered 1991-1992 ", I could then feel bound by the writing of" Silence ", the second and so far last album released back in 1994 also reprinted today?
Not really.
Norway was in full swing and the same black metal Fester already poised between death and what the world was being formed through the guidance of great bands such as Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Emperor, Satyricon and Immortal, with what appeared to date is their swan song, "Silence".
A disc definitely different than its predecessor, the impact melody has grown exponentially, the sound is more refined though it is constantly immersed in an atmosphere far from full of lights and a component thrash is still more than revealed in setting riffing that featuring songs like "Frustration" and "The Maze".
The album does not stand out probably because of the variety and dynamics, there's kind of monotonic advanced places, however, highlight an environmental structure solid as a brick, melancholy eye-catching and soothing sounds more blacks than gray exacerbated by the hissing voice that crawling snakes weakening within touching songs that make it just sighed.
Intensity, as in the past slowdowns that bring to light the way almost doomico to interpret the genre, the touches of sweet and mellow guitar of "Voices From The Woods" in which there is participation of the voice of Wolfgang Weiss and Cadaverous Condition beauty in the song "Nar NOENO Dor ..." will not make a miracle come in contact with people during those years they had lived and who still has the unbridled desire to relive day after day.
Closes the platter the usual bonus tracks added to give a sop to the more hungry metalheads, it's the turn of "Persecution" performed live in the play that role, yes, but that gem does not add or take away about what he has heard so far.
The Fester and "Silence" are among those hidden gems that slowly trying to rediscover the band set in motion by "Tiger" is ready to record the comeback album with a renewed line-up that sees inside Thomas Andresen (formerly Algol) on vocals, Jon Bakker (former Kampf and Carpathian Full Moon) on bass and drums Jontho (ex-Ragnarok and Tsjuder), will give us new emotions?
You decide which chapter to start to start your knowledge with quest'act Norwegian and enjoy a step back in time two decades, may cause offense? For lovers of old metal scene (it is above all that I speak to them) do not think so.

BANE (Serbia) - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by http://www.teethofthedivine.com

Image

By Erik Thomas
I can’t say I had super high hopes for the debut CD from Serbia’s Bane; nondescript moniker, clichéd logo, artwork and album title, etc. But when I dove into the album I was actually greeted with some very competent and confident melodic black/death metal.
There’s nothing original to be seen here at all here. Solid mix of tangible Dissection/Dimmu Borgir/Naglfar/Dark Funeral worship with some deeper death metal vocals, some synths, and some well done, melodic but slicing riffs. All rendered with a nice polished production and just enough atmospherics and blazing riffs to keep me interested throughout. Albeit, I’m not blown away. Divided into three chapters (Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness – duh!), the nine songs (plus a cover of Dark Funeral‘s “The Dawn No More Rises” for this US release) comprise 38-minutes of well done music that comes across as purely Scandinavian — not Serbian.
Requisite atmospheric opener “The Awakening of the Evil Spirits” is your typical black/death keyboard intro before “The True Insomnia” delivers some fairly standard black death blasts and growls. Nothing spectacular or attention grabbing. The third track, “Pandemonium”, is where Bane start to really pick things up with a really nice melodic blast and closing militant march that their Scandinavian peers would appreciate. “Lost Shadows” is an acoustic interlude, which should really cement how unoriginal these guys are. However, when the band deliver the vehement competence of “Abhorrence”, epic (read: long song with an acoustic mid-section) “Plague Upon Yourself” and terse melodic assault of “Inherited Infection”, it’s hard not to nod your head and think, “Hmmmm, not too shabby…” to yourself. “The Haunting Presence” is a slower somber track, showing that the band can step outside their box, but only barely as the closing atmospheric instrumental, “Dysthymia”, shows.
These guys know their niche and influences and wear them openly. There’s not an original note on the album, but each note is in fact pretty enjoyable and worth a look for fans interested in a solid take on a pretty same-y genre.

A little interview with Undertrykker from the Norwegian band Hat.

Image

Hello how's the weather in Norway? Springtime is just around the corner here in Texas.
Hello. We are approaching spring here as well, so the weather is fine I guess.

For the readers that don't know about the band can give the fans about the band hat and give brief explanation about the band name?
The quick answer to this is that the name really suites the kind of music we make. The name translates to Hatred in Norwegian for those who don't speak our language. So we are not into hats in any way...

We used the name Ravner (Ravens) back in 1993, but when we started up again in 2006 we really felt that this name did not suit our style of music.

From 1996 to 2008 the band was on hiatus. What was the reason for the bands inactivity?
We grew up together in a place called Drøbak about 25 miles outside of the capitol Oslo, but school and life in general sent us to different parts of Norway. We had very little contact with each other in this period, but luckily we met up again, only to discover that we both still had the urge to make music. So Hat was born.

ImageImage

Hat just finished recording their second full length "Vortex Of Death". How would you compare "Vortex Of Death" to "The Demise Of Mankind"?
I think "The Demise Of Mankind" is a more traditional Norwegian black metal album, "Vortex Of Death" is slightly more complex in terms of songwriting.

What is the feedback so far on the new album?
The reviews have been good so far. I think people like the feeling of hatred the album projects. We always search for the right feeling in our music, and Hat will always be about hatred and hostility against the human race.

A lot has changed in the Norwegian black metal scene. How did these changes affected the band so far?
As we are not a part of this scene, we haven't really changed at all.

From what I observed, the scene wasn't like it used to be. Do you feel the scene got more trendy now these days?
I don't think that black metal has become more trendy than it used to be.. The genre has been around since the early 90`s so I think a lot of the trendy kids has jumped over to other things. I think it used to be a lot more “black metal uniformed” people in the streets earlier anyway.

What bands you like listening to when you're not performing in Hat?
I do listen to a lot of different bands. But a few favorites are: Orcustus, Necromanhteon, Angel Corpse, Aura Noir, Burzum, Deathspell Omega hmm this list will become mighty long hehe. A lot of great bands out there. Check them out.

Image

Has the band played any show around your home country? Any plans for shows or festivals this summer?
Hat is not nor will be a live band.

I know bands like Darkthrone and The Meads Of Asphodel won't play or do any live shows is that the same situation with Hat?
Yes, none of us is interested in the live show scene. Black metal works best on a stereo. Light some candles, put on the record loud and let your mind go.

Are there any plans to re-release "Livit Ebber Ut" in the near future?
Well it is completely sold out, but we haven't made any plans to rerelease it. Maybe in the future if our fans demand it. We'll see.
I like to thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Do you have any last words?

PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION (U.S.) P.N.D. EP CD review by autothrall via http://www.metal-archives.com

Image

By autothrall

Pasadena Napalm Division Crossing over with john deadwards

Pasadena Napalm Division is what naturally occurs when you transplant the instantly recognizable vocals of the dirty rotten imbecile of crossover royalty himself, Kurt Brecht, over the angry riffs and drums of the late great Dead Horse members Greg Martin, Scott Sevall and Ronny Guyote, then season with bassist Bubba Dennis II of Verbal Abuse. All Texas, all attitude, all the time, and the P.N.D. EP is the band's first foray into a recording studio. You're probably going to expect some high velocity crossover/thrash, and that is precisely what manifests here, a lot closer to D.R.I. than Dead Horse, but with busier riffing than you'll find on a classic like Dealing With It (or Crossover itself).

The band has no delusions about what it's setting out to create here, and that's a simple and fun unit through which to exert some anger and live entertainment. Six tracks in about 15 minutes. The lyrics are primarily of the sillier variety, as you could imagine from a title like "100 Beers With a Zombie", or "Spell It Out" which takes itself quite literally, but they often veer into a more depressing, slightly serious territory as in the self-derogatory "Failure". Musically, they're not out to waste your time, but simply trying to carve out another slice of the virile energy of the late 80s punk/thrash cross section. Granted, this also means you won't be hearing much of anything new in the riffs. Many of them sound wholly familiar, not only from the backlog of the constituents at play here, but through decades of the stuff all around the globe.

That isn't to say that Pasadena Napalm Division are incompetents, because they inject quite a lot of visceral energy into such basic components. Certainly, the 13 year old skateboard-drunk maniac within me finds something here that calls to the innocence of his soul, and the raw thrashing force of "Speaking in Tongues" and Spanish-tongued "Non Ti Amo" forced him out into a domestic circle pit, knocking over various piles of empty beer bottles, molded Thrasher mag subscriptions and labyrinths of unwound cassettes by Cryptic Slaughter, Bl'AST! and so forth. Deep immersion this is not, but then, that's never been the intent of this hybrid genre. P.N.D. is not home to a wide array of engrossing riffs, and I'd like to hear a full-length with better writing and more interesting note patterns, but the nature of this particular release is to force an ass kicking upon you as swiftly as possible with a carefree bluster, and that at least is on offer, even if your bottom won't remain sore for very long.

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.metalteamuk.net

Image

By Martin Harris

When this nicely packaged digipack disc arrived I was expecting some filthy 90s death metal from Norway’s Fester. But having read the biography information it turns out these Norwegians were very atypical for the scene around at the time of original release in 1992, when the Norwegian black metal scene was in its full throe and reeling from various scandals within its own subculture of depravity and controversy.
You’d expect Fester to deliver some truly underground and gnarly death metal of Swedish variety with a name like Fester but no these guys tried to make a name for themselves by mixing up blackened metal traits with sludge like death metal but ultimately I suspect the band found it difficult to win fans when black metal was the thing at the time in Norway. The title track begins the album with what sounds like some dude walking through snow as some black metal like screams come forth as the song moves into a slow doom like pace that is fairly melodic and using a thin bass, though not as thin as said black metal scene.
Despite the album having been remastered the sound is still demo like in sound quality which is not a bad thing, purely an observation as “Senses Are The True You” takes on a death metal quality with a pace similar to Marduk’s “Dark Endless”. In fact this has similarities to many early black metal bands demo days when they were actually death metal before morphing (read as jumping on the bandwagon) into black metal. When listening to this it is important to remember when it was out and what was around at the time as “Winter Of Sin” was certainly off kilter with the rest of the scene and unique in its own way by blending black, death, doom and touches of thrash into their songs.
“Victory!!!” takes on a Dissection flavour even though Dissection’s debut was not out until a year after, but I’m sure you’ll see what I’m driving at when the band uses thrash riffing with some purely heavy metal rhythms. The songs are actually quite long giving the Dissection comparison more weight I guess though I did find the leads quite weak overall even for 1992 when you compare it to other notable releases of the time such as Asphyx’s “Last One On Earth”, At The Gates’ “The Red In The Sky Is Ours”, Enslaved’s “Yggdrasil” plus a wealth of other quality releases from the same year.
There is a doom like and even Sabbath like feel to “A Dogfight Leaves A Trace” being slow and dirge like but with the occasional changes of speed the song has plenty of variety. The studio output closes with “The Commitments That Shattered” and has a good riff in the background as the lead does its best to prove a point. I preferred this album when the leads were kept short to leave the crusty like riffing to demonstrate an occult like flavour that spreads through most of the album. The black metal style vocals often seem out of place but fit well with the bleak like atmosphere the band successfully created with this album. The album comes with a lengthy live track from their first demo in 1991 (“When Darkness Confirms”) and recorded live the same year. Surprisingly the sound is fairly clear and has little distortion and sounds as crude and raw as you would hope to expect from that time.
This is a minimalist death metal album with other influences from doom, black and straight heavy metal and gave this band a unique selling point at the time which was lost on the scene at the time. If you want to hear some truly authentic underground and claustrophobic death metal then this is worth hearing, but don’t expect pure black metal or a Swedeath sound.

Diabolical (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD (US pressing) review by http://www.queensofsteel.bitacoras.com

Image

By Sergio Fernandez

DIABOLICAL is without doubt one of the bands of higher quality in their extreme style in the old continent, but unfortunately, since 2004 his appearances have been few and drabs in large part due to the hard work of its lead singer Sverker Widgren in their other bands and his own studies Necromorbus.

In addition, these Scandinavians turn 15 years since its inception back in 1996, and celebrated with the release of new material after his excellent "The Gallery of Bleeding Art" three years ago.

Well, DIABOLICAL return with "Ars Vitae," an album consisting of 17 tracks that mix the new recordings and songs recorded live.
All the songs sound better than ever, with production of course, has been made in studies of Sverker, so the band has known how to adapt their powerful sound to new technologies like a charm. A good example is that the live songs have a sound that seems to have been recorded in a studio.
Of the new tracks we highlight "Eye", an outstanding issue that we can enjoy DIABOLICAL pure, while in the last three issues of "Ars Vitae," we can enjoy an interesting change in their sound with a voice and a style closer to Black Metal.

DIABOLICAL always clear what is a band that never disappoints, and although it does not take too much stuff, all you create is a sublime quality in an aggressive Swedish Death Metal without any palliative.
Score: 9/10

BANE (Serbia) - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by opium89 via http://www.metal-archives.com

Image

By opium89

First thing announcing the atmosphere of this album is unquestionably its cover. By staring at it a bit longer you may notice all the emotions embedded in the music. Music will guide you from chaotic state, through hate, darkness, anger, sadness, to the loss of all emotions, to an empty state in which one is unable to feel. But let’s not judge the book by it’s cover.

First chapter: “Chaos”. Skipping the intro that usually sets the right atmosphere, the album starts with heavy drum and guitar hits, followed by a very powerful and mean theme. Further on, combining different growling and screaming vocals and various drum patterns, they make their music “wanna go out of control”, yet it is controlled by using slower passages. The third song continues where the second stops by going totally out of control. Confusion. Chaos.

Just before it’s too much, the chaotic noise is calmed down by a melodic instrumental that leads the listener to the second chapter: “Darkness”. Although themes are still fast and grim, one can also hear a strong death metal influence. Tempo and rhythm changes. Strong brakes, and heavy riff parts make this part different, more defined and sharper from previous.

“Emptiness”. The last chapter. “Inherited Infection” introduces slow doomish melodies between the fast parts of the song. The slow parts finally prevail during the penultimate song on the album. The melancholic melody, heavy chords and deep growls call for emptiness. The album ends with an eerie, empty, instrumental. The quest is fulfilled, the listener is taken through chaos, darkness and emptiness.

Speaking of genres, this album is a combination of many. Although they consider their music black death metal, there are influences of almost all metal sub-genres. Starting from the slow parts typical of doom metal, heavy parts influenced by old school death metal, to wide range of vocals typical of all extreme metal sub-genres. Sharp, tight and bright production adds modern, at some points industrial feel. Simple, but wisely fitted arrangements make it easy to listen, but keeping the listener’s attention. The lyrics are filled with hate, disappointment, sadness and anger.

Honestly, I have to agree with Zlabog’s conclusion. Away from combining all that has been already heard, “Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness” does not bring innovations. This is the only reason for the lower grade. But after listening to this album, I’m looking forward to their future releases, hoping they will contain stronger personal touch!

BODYFARM (Netherlands) - Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.minacious.org

Image

By Mordant
At first I misread the band name, Bodywork, I thought it where some sort of exercise CD, where you jump around and bang your head while instructions is shouted at you with Death Metal growls accompanied by blastbeats and heavy tremolo riffing. My mind works in mysterious ways. Anyway, the music, debut release from this Dutch Death Metal band, first released by the band themselves, now officially released. Fast, brutal and fucking heavy Death Metal, with some slower sections. Very American in some ways, but there is also some United Kingdom Death Metal influences floating around, all done with bit of an old school approach. Intriguing debut, I think this band will become quite more interesting in the future.

HAT (Norway) - Vortex of Death DIGI CD review by http://metal-revolution.com

Image

By Bato
Hat is a Norwegian classic black metal duo formed in 1993 under the name of Ravner. During the period of 1996 to 2006 the band was inactive for soon after to reunite under the new moniker, Hat. The band released the demo Livet Ebber Ut in 2008 and a year later their debut full-length entitled The Demise Of Mankind. To prove that Hat is not ‘one-album-project’ the band is now ready with a follow-up Vortex Of Death.

Vortex Of Death is a eight-track long offering filled with chaos and destruction. The album reflects and holds the energies that make Hat what it is; a true Norwegian Black Metal. Key-words are; misanthropy, chaos, death and destruction – forged in the flames of eternal hell. Their music is fierce and grim, slipping from total classic old-school style Nordic blasting blackness. Meanwhile, it also has this groovy and sometimes even epic side which makes it quite listenable. Overall pace of the album is mid-tempo, with occasional shifts. Cover artwork is mediocre, but I like their lyrical mix of both Norwegian and English lyrics.

The only downside of this particular record is the fact that almost all songs sound similar to each another. There’s a very little variation and diversity, but also maybe a bit of harshness and rawness that was present on their debut.

Still, I consider Vortex Of Death opus to be ‘above the average’ and something that can be recommended for fans of Satyricon, Tsjuder, Immortal, Taake, Emperor, Gorgoroth and similar old-school, authentic & misanthropic Nordic black metal acts. http://www.myspace.com/evighat

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.hellridemusicforums.com

Image

By Janet Willis

Fester is a wet dream for a doomy death fanatic like myself and this classic release from back in 1992 is being necromanced to unleash its raw venomous curse yet again. There’s the rawness of Autopsy and Winter and a bit of Darkthrone and Celtic Frost to freeze the blood in your veins, but overall Fester is its own beast with its own sound and feel and comes highly recommended for those who like their metal raw and filthy as much as I do. There’s a good balance between doom death and classic Nordic old school black metal to savor here so definitely pick this thing up.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.southerndarkness.net

Image

By southerndarkness.net

Abyss Records re released this past April 7 a classic one of the legendary band Death / Black Metal Norwegian, which emerged in the years when Emperor Mayhem and others were planting base of what would be so controversial Norwegian black metal scene This edition re Fester and his first work "Silence" comes in its original form as it came out in 1993, in those days the label was responsible for editing Lethal Records.
What if commissioned to redesign Abyss Records was the artwork, the songs have some touch of mastering, and brings each of the topics a few lines of the band members where they explain in detail its meaning when composing, and bonus track of a live track recorded in 1991.
The album is a piece of worship without a doubt, full of cold atmospheres, depression, anger, and very good riffs, completing a work that has everything a good album of old school Death / Black Metal has to have strongly recommended for which no conscience Fester, one of the legendary Norwegian band of the late 80's.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) - The Spirit of Warfare CD review by metal.de

Image

By Eugen

Six years have passed since the release of the demo "Prey" passed. Six years in which we have heard nothing about this country, the Swedish trio Hyperborean. Now the debut album with her full-time "Spirit of Warfare" at Abyss Records
If you want to be strict, so the band plays no Black Metal. Certainly - in the brutal passages can be seen here and there a DARK FUNERAL quote and at the keyboard with painted mid-tempo parts parallels emerge to the very old DIMMU BORGIR. The variety in the vocals and the experimental drift Songwrighting the style, however, very often on the genre standards. The lyrics are busy on ancient mythology, as with the worship of the Horned One. Scene purists hear so read the latest here on further.
The rest must be said that the present work quite a few runs is worth. Thus, the harsh melodies unfold gradually, and combine into a whole. And this whole thing an exciting mix of black metal doom, avant-garde structures, a pinch of death metal brutality and always will is not noticeable to want to play on the beaten path. Pleasant is also the unity of the album. Despite the often tried squatting between the chairs, created the band an identity that runs consistently through the work. The fast-paced songs like the opener "Channeling The Spirit of War"with its catchy refrain (that term is allowed for this music) fit seamlessly to the nearly ten-minute roller coaster ride "The Last Stand Of Leonidas And The Battle Of Thermopylae" where the mood turns several times. Great suspense.

Unfortunately the second half of the album is not quite as strong as the beginning. After half an hour of play it's hard to stay focused even in the matter. The absence of rhythm guitar takes the song unnecessary pressure and depth. Although it is possible this shortcoming by a very good use of keyboards to compensate in part, would have been welcome here with a second six strings longer can get out.

Very tidy with six points upward trend. You keep looking forward to the further creation of Sweden.

Diabolical (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD (US pressing) review by http://www.hellridemusicforums.com

Image

By Janet Willis
Diabolical – Ars Vitae
