FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

I’ve been waiting for this album for a while now. My expectations are quite high that this Swedish band will deliver a monolith of a death metal album. That this will be the ball breaker I’ve been waiting for. And what a ball breaker it is. From the word go this is a rollercoaster ride that only goes down. You’re taken on a ride that will have you gasping for air all the way. This is blasting death metal that takes no prisoners. It only leaves victims in its trail. Join the ride or end up maimed and dismembered. A full on blast that will leave you sweaty and tired, and that is just from the first ride. There are 8 more to go before you reach the end of the line. Who needs expensive diet courses when you have Fetus Stench to burn off all that excessive fat?

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.twilight-magazin.de

Image

By Tobias Trillmich

If Allen West is the lead guitarist, is inclined death metal fan can safely buy the disc. This also applies to the debut of SOUTHWICKED.
I've seen the band on tour with Master and was thrilled. On the merchandise was not flat but still have to now, the band finally puts before the debut. It is logical that recalls the sound of Obituary was all but style icon for the sound of death metal veterans. Also SOUTHWICKED go to work at a moderate pace, but develop more energy than some high-speed tape. There are also intricate song structures, it is not. This simplicity is not to be confused with triviality. What should I write big? Who old Obituary, Six Feet Under may, at this band is not over.

Rating: 13/15

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by aristocraziawebzine

Image

By Mourning

Eternal Helcaraxë The Irish are one of those bands that I hoped to publish as soon as the debut. After having met with the EP "To Whatever End" in 2010 and having been happily impressed, first to accept the news release of "Against All Odds" and then receive the copy to talk about is what might be termed a pleasure. The line-up remained unchanged, the styling approach combative but often punctuated by moments of epic equally airy and soaked, they realize that they possess qualities particularly important from the point of view of communication and emotional aspect of that the beat while iron is hot. This debut album reflects what the band has presented quell'ep, there is a use of melodies guessed, never become too corny even in moments when you have the distinct impression that the fervor of the fight is put to one side relative to favor of an ancestral sense of melancholy, of acoustic interference calibrated so as not to become invasive and tediously repetitive, in counterpoint to the clean vocals that are "opposed" in some sections and screaming like a sharp blade Maulgrim, depth and Accompaniment guaranteed by synth carefully crafted to support the setting of songs and splendid service for the skins of Tyrith, earth-shaking, but ..., but there already. I can not deny that "Against All Odds" I enjoyed it, having in its ranks the songs really intriguing, such as a triplet consisting of "Invictus", "We Assisted Death" and the title track, which also arises as the second chapter of "All Battle To Come", takes you in and does it with full force. I can also say that there are some scary drops as the rest of the tracklist provides evidence of respect even when the voice in almost bearing clean connotations in "As The Snow Gathers," In the entrance to the Preparatory excellent instrumental atmospheres imbued with a pride, passion and nature of any more time or even in the movements of thrashate "Shadow Of The Wolf". There is however a slight decrease in intensity in some circumstances which can prevent the Eternal Helcaraxë to reproduce the same effect in terms of involvement, a gift that was present in high quantities in "To Whatever End" with a kind of heroism thresholds which raised the values. We are still at the beginning of the adventure for the Irish and the positive notes are still many more than those that could slow down the journey. The album's production for example is a couple of steps higher than those of the past, is more rocky and clean enough to provide a worthy performance instrument for a test colors epic, the road taken is still the right. I said at the time and I repeat once again, the compositional maturity absolutely not miss these guys and since we are still talking about a simple debut, "Against All Odds" that fits nicely inside the range of ratings that are not rewarded only for the intention but also for the continuity of intent that the Eternal Helcaraxë demonstrate to perpetrate. Ultimately, if you loved "To Whatever End", defects or not this work will soon be in your collection, I'm sure.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Interview by aquelarrezine

Image

By Paul Caravasi

The history of Thousand Year War began in the winter of 2008 in Haines, Alaska with Hiram Lohr (guitar, vocals). Dan Ferguson of Abyss Records signed Thousand Year War.The first pressing of Tyrants and Men is available as a digipak. All Album art was done by Luciferium War Graphics with the logo by Christophe Szpajdel.Presently,Thousand year war is working on a new Ep called "Doom Rides These Mountains".Here's an interview with Hiram, vocals of the band.

1-How are you Hiram?.I hope everything is great with the band.Tell me how did you form Thousand year war and who are the current members?

Pretty good! Just been getting ready to go into the studio for the upcoming TYW ep Doom Rides These Mountains. The current members are just me(hiram) and Fredrik Widigs who is on tour with Demonical right now. And I am just starting to work with a session guy to lay down some studio bass tracks.

2-Who were the bands that influenced you ?

Well I personally loved the sound of Kampfar, old In Battle, mithotyn, Arckanum, windir, Amon amarth and so on. Of course I listen to a lot more black metal these days as I've seen a lot of posers attach themselves to melodic death I feel myself attracted to the true underground. Malfeitor comes to mind. Not so bm is Anarchonaeon and the Horde now on Abyss.

3-How did you get the deal with dan of abyss records?

Mainly with the help of Fredrik widigs. He helped get a connection going to Dan and he expresses an interest in the band so from there it was an easy choice as Dan has been such an active part and player in the true underground metal scene!

4-Tell me about the response of the album "Tyrants and men" so far.

The response has been spectacular! I have no complaints and even Made a best debut list and top 10 list which for our first cd I'm really happy about that. And it's collected a lot of interest from metal heads around the world which is very pleasing

5-What about the lyrical content?

My lyrical content is inspired by anger at world government(especially u.s. policy) and hatred for a lethargic uncaring human race. I see a system that uses us as cattle just so a few rich pigs can have their fun in the sun. Pathetic. On future material I will be drifting towards speaking out against.Animal cruelty and the lifestyle of vegAnism that I have embraced.

6-Has Thousand year war played any live shows? Are there any plans for a tour?

No live shows unfortunately....I'm Waiting for the right moment and opportunity for a good tour with session Musicians. I'm tired of dealing with people's bullshit and drama so I'm going to focus on doing everything myself with the help of Fredrik on drums while taking on session members if we eventually tour.

7-What were the musical goals when you started the band?

My goals were to create an atmosphere with my music that I felt in my heart based on anger, despair, loneliness, hope and every kind of emotion I felt that could be translated through the strings of the guitar. I could care less about being the next band that impresses fans with technicality. I want every person that listens to feel inspired and also read into the lyrics and perhaps pull Something useful From them.

8-Tell me about your local metal scene. Is there a true support from the fans?

I really have no idea and I'm not very interested. Maybe because I have only time to put into my music and everything else I have to juggle or just because there's not really much that grabs my interest. Although there is a more traditional death metal band called decayed existence who are amazing led by Harry Rocco and also a sort of horror punk band dusk casket which I really enjoy.

9-What is the meaning behind "Tyrants and men?

It means that there is a ruling elite class of morbid pigs that control all the wealth.Pharmacuticals, hospitals, food, authority who are the tyrants and there are a small handful of men(and women) that refuse to kneel to these corporate fat car assholes to the point of death. It's a title based on an age old duality.

10-What advice would you give an up and coming band to try to make it and get signed?

Bring everything into focus and concentrate on making solid songs and a actual full Length album instead of wasting time trying to impress a few local assholes while making bullshit demos.Look beyond that and make music that comes from your heart and soul.

11-How do you feel about the hardcore kids dancers in the shows ? Is that helpful to the scene or do you think they deserve a beating in the mosh pit for doing that?

I believe they are simply poser jocks trying to unknowingly ruin a great thing. It is primarily the result of this death core bullshit that most poser American trendy metal people think is cool. When in reality it is played by attention starved media puppets who are strung around the stage by corporations like scion cars and rock star energy drinks trying to make money off the new metal fad. It will die and the underground will forge on. Don't Beat them, ignore them and let the posers move onto the next trend!

12-Do you think the metal scene is getting better, staying the same,or getting worse then it has been in previous years?

It's great in that there are so many metal Bands and it's very interactive with the Internet. But it's also a incredibly lazy scene in that no one buys CDs or purchases downloads instead a lot of so called fans are nothing but posers that steal music left and right while leaving us musicians to eat the bread crumbs that are left. We need major help and illegal downloads and torrents are fucked.
Beyond that there is this death core movement I have mentioned that is American made and simply trendy bullshit capitalizing on the recent metal craze to pull ,In more posers to get covered in tattoos, drink energy drinks, put Metal Mulisha stickers on their useless trucks and be a corporate media sellout tool that has the delusion they are somehow a metal head. In Reality the real Metal heads are continuing in and will be standing among the bones, corpses and rubble of all poser scum ....

13-In your opinion, what would be the ultimate guitar to own?

My dream guitar will be made Soon by our new endorsement Krashburn guitars!!!
http://www.facebook.com/KrashBurnGuitars It has a very unique shape with spears designed into The shape. I'm extremely excited about this and will also be doing a guitar giveaway in which a lucky fan will Win a guitar from Krashburn with the TYW design.

14-What are the future plans for the band?

My plans are to release this CD, do some new shirts, get this guitar made and then start working on a new full length for 2013. The war continues and more battles await! I have hopes of a tour next year and will Just keep my fingers crossed and hope it happens!

15-Thanks for your time Hiram ,any last words for this interview?

Thank you Paul! I absolutely love your zine and reccomend it to every metal fan:) Please show support to abyss records and Krashburn guitars. I also could not leave this interview without reccomending the lifestyle of veganism to all TYw fans and metal Supporters.I found true freedom and renewed my passion for life and metal through being vegan. Spit in the face of the government and corporations by refusing their poisons....end all cruelty to the beasts of our earth and detach yourself from our sick food culture!!!!!!!!

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.suonidistortimagazine.com

Image

By Francis ChiodoMetallico

Two years after their last output record ( 'Fractal' of 2010), recur Tuscans Humangled with this new EP, 'Odd Ethics' , published by the American Abyss Records and available since last June 8. Four tracks that make up about a quarter of an hour of music, but let's see ..... Starting with the packaging of the product, known that the band has kept us in care of every detail, creating an excellent
work and very professional in every respect. Ben also did the cover art work, simple but effective ..... Opening entrusted to 'Needles Of The Blind' , preceded by a brief intro, where you start with a direct sort of ride in mid tempos typically death metal. Immediately the singing catches on with all his anger and arrogance. Riff accuminati and massive are the masters, with some references that would bring to mind certain Carcass. Well structured tempo changes that make the work interesting and varied, with a certain air of technical, showing, moreover, that we are not talking about young musicians, but people who know their stuff. Here 'Skinned, To Feel All' , which part with a few interludes aggressive, immediately after which you will find yourself immersed in a death metal sound with walls up straight from the guitars, giving quell'appeal melodic than slaughter in an excessive way, giving some melodic lines that give a certain charm (but not think of the Swedish melodic death metal). Interesting ads of clean guitar that lurk in the most rhythmic. The frontman sings with all his rage, alternating some rough scream to deep growl and powerful. Sprout some array references some death'n'roll. The band clearly shows that he lacks the ability, as well as technical skills, listen to the tempo changes very well coordinated and see. References are death'n'roll are more marked in the following 'Smells Acrid' , where there are few points of heavy matrix. So our fit a certain "punctuation" varies within their compositions, so as not to be trivial, though nothing is offered purely innovative. The production is well managed, so as to render justice to each member and to receive the product at 'listener without a hitch. The only flaw that I seem to encounter is a lack of sharpness of the vocalists, although it is well prepared and boasts its own strong energy, between screams and growls as mentioned before, but it lacks that "something more" that can break through to fully the listener. For the rest I do not find any fault. In closing cd you find yourself in front of 'Deny Your Creed' , where solutions suffused with flavor (but not soft) open immediately to what, personally, I think the highlight of the Ep, where Our sound is very open to give a rough and winding melodies, where, once again, puts on display their excellent technical preparation. Ferocious riffs, midway between the Carcass and the American school, but never an end in itself, a rhythmic base that easily switches from attack to chop bones and some cadenzamenti like ride. A band that has its own internal harmony and it shows. In addition to a passion and aptitude not just! Some are guitar heavy matrix, even here, emerge in small moments, making the work of our non-trivial.
All the pieces, however, to say that there are intense, leaving the viewer a listen very full and enveloping, like a vice pleasantly destructive. As the title ( 'Odd Ethics' ), the same result with some degree of "inequality" sound, ie, their compositions are, in some respects, the approach discostante. To explain, at times, the changes of time and throughout the proposal itself, it is vaguely "asymmetric" which, paradoxically, makes it intriguing and slightly psychotic listening.
A quarter of an hour intense that you feel well and you will remember, as soon as he finishes listening to the urge to press the button 'play' .
If this EP is a foretaste of a future of their new album, we can only expect a good job. The Humangled resurface after two years of absence from the market always being in good shape and with a clear idea of what they want to propose, proposing it with a healthy attitude and conviction!
If you love death metal and get yourself this EP will have a good bread for your teeth!

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) Interview by extrememetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Rock: We are preparing to play TitanFestIII in Belgium this September.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album?

Rock: I like it. I think it sounds like Allen West's guitar/writing and much more.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?

Rock: Marco wrote the lyrics on Death's Crown and its mainly about serial killers.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

Rock: We wanted to call the band Old Sparky but that name was already in use so we liked the idea of using a play on Alfred Southwick's (the inventor of the electric chair) name cause he was from my hometown, Buffalo NY and it fit with the concept of Death's Crown.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Rock: Our first gig at Vlamrock in BE was a major blast. It was my first gig in Europe and it was awesome to see a large crowd. We played the Neurotic Deathfest in NL last year and that sticks out in my mind as well. We get onstage and jam..

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?

Rock: Besides the TitanFest gig we have nothing confirmed as of yet. Stay tuned

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of death metal?

Rock: Mostly positive. Makes us feel good

8. What is going on with the other musical projects these days?

Rock: I'm moonlighting in a cover band here in Maryland called Never 2 Strong and may be recording a couple of songs for the California Death Metal band Lustmord in the near future. Sven and Stef are doing well with Shattered Skull, They are playing a show or 2 with Six Feet Under soon.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by http://www.kaosguards.com

Image

By kaosguards

Barely a year after its formation, FETUS STENCH released his first album "Stillbirth" on the label Abyss Records.
From the outset, FETUS STENCH itself as a group of brutal death in the Swedish tradition. Emil severe pounding on drums, drummer madman is accompanied by loggers with big guitars sharp as saws have one goal: any spray in their wake.
9 Listening to music on "Stillbirth" confirms, FETUS STENCH is a machine crash, louder than a steamroller, their music displays so much energy that it is better to be well prepared and especially the amateur kind before engage in listening to this album.
As a coke bottle that has been shaken and just waiting to explode, the disc FETUS STENCH just waiting for your plate for you fuck a big slap and you smash against the wall. "Stillbirth" is very compact, it's tough, the power of the prod further accentuate this force, you will be at the foot of a rampart impassable until your inevitable death crushed by a tank. No rest, even with slower as "Severe Suffering" you will be unable to catch your breath, heavy riffs over qu'étouffants will charm you. This small downturn will be very brief because restarts foot down soon after the title and that until the last second of the album. Some breaks are hidden from both sides of the various compounds but they are rare and often very short which makes "Stillbirth" even more extreme.
Of the melody? Yes there are too scattered to right to left these little moments of guitar leads are always popular in albums so violent, that can breathe for a moment.
FETUS STENCH makes a decent debut album in the genre, not very original but very effective. If you want to be sprayed, go ahead get the atomic bomb of brutal death.

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by http://www.undergrind.net

Image

By Discord

From the European North East comes Latvian Death Metal band Diseim with their debut release titled Holy Wrath. These guys started out in 2006, have compiled enough experience through the years and found Abyss Records willing to do the release of their full length album.
With eight tracks Diseim seeks to clarify for us their “older” style of Death Metal which is more bare bone than expected and has a production that is less smothered in gory thickness than what has seemed to be the rule for years. The songs are songs and they come with a dark but groovy mood through a copious amount of slowness and an emphasis on sombre guitar riffs.
If you are looking for structured songs with enough variety to last you longer than a week then the Death Metal of Diseim will full-fill that need quite easily.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.jorzine.com

Image

By jorzine

The legendary death metal album "Slowly We Rot" for the American death metal band Obituary has always been one of my favorite classic death metal albums of all time, and also the album "Haunted" for the American death metal band Six Feet Under also contained many good elements though its not on my favorite list, the common factor between these amazing releases is the amazing lead guitarist "Allen West" who is presenting us today the debut album "Death's Crown" for his new death metal band Southwicked.
What makes "Allen West" a special guitarist is his capability to make the melodies of his lead guitar swim and row upon the surface of the rhythm guitar freely and cleverly without crashing the whole firm death metal atmosphere, and this capability helps to make this record dynamic and full of metallic motion. As the American death metal scene is still thriving and presenting us a lot of death metal releases, we can clearly notice that most of the new death metal bands are influences by the classic death metal bands Morbid Angel and Death and sometimes Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, but actually there are many new albums that try to sound different and add a lot of genuine sound and visions like this record. Prepare yourself for a new death metal album for a new band here, but with a classic lead guitarist.
When I first played the tracks "Death's Crown" and "Craving For Blood" I expected to hear some sharp guitar solos, and my expectations were totally right because Allen has attached his holy guitar solos to structure of the songs. The classic death metal crashing riffs gave a lot of groovy and headbanging energy inside the tracks of this record, especially the tracks "Killing Spree" and "The Phantom Prince", and actually these tracks reminded me a lot of the American band "Six Feet Under". The classic old school death metal enjoyment continued inside the fast riffing of the track "Graveyard Of Bones" and inside the energy of the deep growling vocals of the track "Charming Karma". And after all these seven classic death metal beauty, the band presents another two dynamic death metal tracks, one of them is the track "Green River Killing Fields" that has a lot of rough peaks and energetic drumming, and the other track is "The Only Living Witness", this track ends this record with a groovy way and shows a lot skillful efforts in performing the bass and the drums.
The production of this album reminded me of the old death metal albums that Allen has been involved in, the tune of the guitars is dusty and full of old school feelings. The total sound of this record and its sharp edges are a gift for all the old school death metal fans that seek for a modern band with a flavor, the experienced members who have involved in great classic death metal albums in the past are mostly the only ones who are able to create this mess and allow all the listeners to get swallowed into its stomach.
Finally, This record has been created for all the death metal fans who fell in love with the early Obituary albums, and for all the fans who admire the flavor and the tune of the American old school death metal records. I don't recommend this album for the listeners who prefer the modern melodic death metal movement, because they simply wont feel the crashing riffs and the classic feelings that have been attached in the structure of this record. If you are searching for a classic\modern death metal release then I recommend this album for you now, get your ears ready to bleed out all the silly modern death metal records out of your head and replace them with real firm and experienced classic death metal riffs.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by mm-metal

Image

By mm-metal

While still sounding current, Corrosive Carcass manages to evoke the feeling of traditional death metal with their debut full-length. The most obvious example is the heavy amount of reverb. This is especially evident in the growls, making them sound like vocalist J. Sjöblom is possessed by some demon. The album sounds evil without sacrificing any musicianship. Most of the songs are under the four minute mark. The band wastes no time getting to the point of each song. As a result, Composition of Flesh blasts its way from start to finish. I give it horns way up.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by misantropiaextrema

Image

By misantropiaextrema

Despite having only released their debut EP in 2007, the history of Italian Humangled dates back to 1996, the year he recorded his first scale model, and before that, its key elements Putrid Sequence had belonged to until 1995. No wonder therefore that the death metal quintet's sound as cohesive in Tuscany, even more so when is the hand of Dan Swanö in production. In stylistic terms, is a mix between death metal and more classic riffs death'n'roll easy the last stage of the career of Carcass, with the same type of guitar sound full and warm. Especially the last track, "Deny Yopur Creed." Although not excel over their peers who play (good) European death metal, the Humangled also not far behind. The four tracks on this EP that allow us to understand the evolution of the band in relation to their debut album (released in 2010) relates mainly to a further clarification on the composition and structure of the bands, which appear more compelling musical personality and a more marked. Anyone who enjoys death metal abrasive, technical and brutal riffs with space for breathing is therefore here a handful of tracks to enjoy.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by apochs.net

Image

By apochs

Swedish Death/Thrash Metal group Septekh return with their follow-up to 2009′s self-released EP Not Quite What I Had in Mind. It’s been roughly three years since that debut recording was made available, and now they find themselves signed to the underground Metal monster Abyss Records to bring fans The Seth Abalanche which, unfortunately, just seems to be their debut EP repackaged and retitled. Either way, the internet has been abuzz in both positive and negative commentary on this recording, quickly making it one of the more important offerings of their career. But, is this actually an important album to own, or at least say that you have heard?
The Seth Avalanche sounds great, having a slightly restrained tone to the audio, but still a rather crisp output. The guitars have a nice deeper distortion to them, though the guitar solo and certain leads can find a cleaner sound layered over the other riffs, filling the music up as one member handling two guitar duties at times. The two sound great together for the most part, though the guitars can sound a bit empty here and there, but that’s still a pretty rare occurrance. The louder bass really stands out, offering a performance that is blatently obvious in the mix, but not too deep, offering a slight twang that is observable in slower sections, such as during “The Seth Avalanche,” but nothing that you’ll genuinely feel despite how high your crank the volume up. On top of that, the drums are nearly perfect. The snares sound a little further back in the mix, which can eliminate some of the snap that they can bring, but the stern click of the bass kick shares about the same level as the guitar. The cymbals are much louder, and it really helps given the focus on them at times, carrying a crisp sound that comes off natural and unaltered in any way, studio or otherwise. The vocals, however, are what really stand out. These are as consistant in level as the cymbals, but there’s plenty of range to them, offering a deeper near-guttural approach to the higher rhasp and rougher styles that make up much of the release, not to mention vary between really enthusiastic to mildly bored when going for the lower tones in some passages.
At only twenty two plus minutes, Septekh have brought a good deal of variety into the music, and have put a good number of quality tracks forward, though not all of them really stand out for the better, and can even show a good deal of influence from other groups. “Fuckslut from Hell” is a phenomenal song, and it sounds like a weaker Goatwhore track. It isn’t bad at all, as there is a good amount of energy captured in the Thrash Metal riffs that seem slightly blackened, and the slower Death Metal approach to a breakdown with the additional echo on the vocals is a nice touch. The faster guitar solo really stands out, and is easily one of the stronger elements of the less than three minute offering. In the end, it largely comes off more like a fun throwback to the early Metal days, which is largely what “Eating the Maneater” seems to be as well. This has more of a Groove Metal push to it, and a vocal style similar to what you’d hear on a Lamb of God album, but with a bit of a modern Exodus kick to everything. The music itself isn’t anything too new or catchy, and clearly has a bit of a Southern regional vibe to it as well, but it still ends up a tight performance that shows off the range of the vocals quite well with more of a lighthearted and fun composition. Of course, this song is far from memorable, unlike some of the others on here.
The ones that really stick with the listener typically do a better job meshing the Death Metal and Thrash Metal ideas together for a more band defining sound. “Shoot Them All” is a prime example with the faster, harsher music that finds both styles blended quite well, and carrying a good deal of aggression with them. The chorus sounds a little primal at first, but when the tension finally hits its release after a few moments, it feels like a weight lifted with catchy music that gives the listener a green light to start a mosh where standing. It comes off as an anthem of hatred and anger management through violent release, carrying the obvious theme of murder thanks to the lyrics and the sound effects of a shotgun being cocked, and an emptied shell hitting the ground, all around a rhythm that is hard to walk away from, testing your newly found obedience. “Blunt Force to the Head” doesn’t carry over the speed in any way, but its trudging slower pace sticks out like a sore thumb on someone who loves pain. The drums just pound away at the listener with simpler chords that allow the bass to really steal the spotlight, and the mixture of largely deeper vocals with additional higher rhasps really help to convey the helpless and tortured atmosphere, all to a beat that will at the very least find you bobbing your head along instinctively. Around the half way point, it does pick up for a brutal blast beat fueled Death Metal assault that helps to push the listener over the edge, capitalizing off the tense start that didn’t seem as though it was purposely there to ignite a riot in the first place.
The Seth Avalanche definitely has its pros, and it also unfortunately has its cons. The ones that feel more consistant to the bands sound end up being really tight and enjoyable cuts, often have more energy, and are the most memorable of the six. However, when it really seems like the band had been influenced by an outside source, you can’t help but just want to hit the skip ahead button. With the exception of “Fuckslut from Hell” and “Not Quite What I Had in Mind,” this recording offers a good deal of great material that fans of Death influenced Thrash are going to enjoy. Sure, it’s just their self-released EP rebranded, but if you missed out on the original pressing, now is your chance to check out this potential new contender of the Metal world.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.crossfire-metal.de

Image

By Schaefer Joxe

This lump was published in 2011 Death before, then with differentiated Artwok. This time, sitting in the 'H' of the band logo, the protagonist from the intro to the electric chair. South of Tampa Wicked then start with the title track at ground level and sluggish, also called "Craving for Blood 'slow rock should be crispy by ear. Overall, it provides a lot of groove with pumping bass and growls, like the English to lead by example. In "Graveyard Of Bones" shimmering sound of Bolt Thrower by most evident. The five from Florida death rock dust-dry with two guitars separately on the left and right channels. Unfortunately, all the songs are not characterized by an ease that is set immediately as "Craving for Blood" or "Green River Killing Fields." For a debut, but ever all thumbs up.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by deathgrindfreak

Image

By deathgrindfreak

As the opening track of “Composition of Flesh” rips through you like a bone machine grinding flesh into mortar paste your first reaction might be “ahhh more Swedish death metal.” But you’d be dead wrong. Corrosive Carcass obviously love their share of early Entombed and Dismember albums but ultimately their debut album is a rotting corpse filled cauldron of both old school Swedish AND U.S. death metal, particularly Autopsy and early Death. The songs are all well written, rhythmically diverse and catchy as hell, listen to “Butchershop” a few times and see if you’re not reciting the opening lyrics to yourself for days afterwards. Overall a great “old school” DM album that stands far above a large majority of the clones out there today. Buy a copy at Abyss Records.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://www.metal-discovery.com

Image

By Mark Holmes

Following their 2010 self-released EP, 'To Whatever End', Ireland's Eternal Helcaraxe have inked a deal with Abyss Records for the release of their debut full-length, 'Against All Odds'. Billing themselves as exponents of "black/epic metal", this is exactly what they deliver through seamlessly changeable down, mid and up-tempo passages that juxtapose an extreme blast-beat, tremolo-picked assault with passages characterised by sublime melodies created through neatly layered guitars, keys, and bass. Echoes of Primordial, Thyrfing, Winterfylleth et al are present in their sound but without sounding like any of said bands; rather Eternal Helcaraxe's aesthetic, while not entirely original, contains enough innovative melodies and twists and turns in tracks' tempos and general composition that their music is fairly captivating on its own grounds. They've forged a sound where sheer brutality meets melancholic beauty head-on and the resulting sonics are thoroughly engaging. It's all about subtle complexity too. There's much going on in the layered instrumentations but the flow of the music is a very natural one so songs' inherent complexities never feel forced. Tempos seem to change in all the right places and add to the emotive dynamic of the band's music rather than throwing in a bunch of blast-beat led sections just because. And the vocals, shared by guitarists Praetorian and Maulgrim, and bassist Thule, are not too high in the mix but work effectively as bitter scowls rasp over the music with sinister malice as narratives of battles unfold. The overall production on 'Against All Odds' is nothing spectacular but has a nice earthy sound that's fitting for both the music and lyrical themes, and the mix is perfectly balanced where instruments and voices combine in malevolent and melancholically epic harmony. All in all, a fantastic debut for this talented bunch of peeps.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by bloodygoodhorror.com

Image

By Chris C.

There's a phenomenon in sports where once great athletes, on the verge of the end, return to the teams they made their legends with on one-day contracts, giving themselves a sense of closure as they fade away into the land of archive footage forevermore. Musicians rarely get that kind of self-serving charade. Bands who reunite after years or even decades seldom manage to live up to the standards we remember of them, and members who return to the fold after time in exile often fail to grasp the passage of time that has altered the group they disappeared from. For musicians, time is always moving forward, and the moment anyone stops to plant their flag in the past, nostalgia overtakes them, and they forfeit their creative spirit.
It's encouraging to see musicians who continue to produce new music after their initial glory years, because their dedication to music is the bond through which we connect to them. Just as we never stop listening, something about the idea of musicians giving up on creating is an odd thought. Southwicked illustrates this idea, as guitarist Allen West continues adding new music to his lengthy resume. A founding member of both Obituary and Six Feet Under, he is one of the men responsible for the sound and success of American death metal. Two decades after his start, with all the associated drama now in the past, he continues to move forward playing the music he helped define.
“Death's Crown” gets off to a false start, a spoken word intro leading into the first track, which continues to waste time with atmospheric textures before the first guitar leads fill the speakers. All of this can be considered setting the stage, but it tests the patience, and requires the first song to be a killer. The title track comes close to redeeming the start, a perfectly old-school recreation of the late 80's Florida death metal scene. With riffs that treat technicality like a foreign concept, the song bludgeons its way through a catchy guitar part, combined with growls that show just enough variation in cadence to be appealing. If anything, the five minute running time goes by too quickly, the structure of having the solo at the beginning making the song feel incomplete.
“Craving For Blood” does the same thing, beginning with West's lead guitar pyrotechnics. The playing is good, but doesn't resonate outside the structure of the song. The solo can't elevate what hasn't been played yet. The crusty riff introduced after the chorus stops the song on its head, veering in a speedier direction before a riff dripping in groove appears for a short while, all making the song a more interesting endeavor. The extra riffs breaking up the standard structures add bits of color to the usually monochrome sound of death metal, letting the songs expand just enough to avoid falling in on themselves.
“The Phantom Prince” blends some Judas Priest styled riffs into the mix, changing up the tempo, and making the song easier to digest. The trait may not be appreciated by diehard death metal fans, but having music that is penetrable helps make the music stand out from the countless bands who treat brutality as a badge of honor. That isn't to say that Southwicked is easy listening, as the rough-edged guitar tone is straight out of the classic era, a nod to the past that isn't overdone. It enhances the aura of the album, which is clear enough to be modern, but makes the polished approach of recent death metal records sound clinical and death. “Death's Crown” has life in the sound, which makes the music jump out with ease.
Whether the chugging rhythms of “Graveyard Of Bones” or the major key chords in “Charming Karma”, Southwicked delivers an album of no-frills death metal that harkens back to the spirit of the classics. This is death metal that isn't afraid to be catchy at times, it's music that would rather bring listeners in than try its best to repel them. Plain and simple, “Death's Crown” is death metal done right.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by rockarollazine

Image

By Javier Salaverry

Septekh was formed in 2008 in Sweden, and only a few months later they recorded their first EP, entitled "Not what I Had in Mind". This demo got excellent reviews in various specialized media, earning him signing a contract with the label Abyss Records, which reissued this EP under the name "The Seth avalanche." And going to drive that brings us together is a surprise to the writer, a fantastic job with riffs worthy of the best Motörhead, practicing a thrash / death of good workmanship, with its base firmly rooted in the '80s. The guitar sounds robust and compact (by David Wikström ) with hyper-fast solos, drums and bass (Persson and Patrik Ström Steffan) well assembled and marking the aggressive riding, and a voice according to the style, which notes that the singer Nils Meseke leaves life in every issue, but noticeable some mismatches in the ring that will surely be polished over time. Throughout the entire album, we see that each member of the band is very professional in his instrument, his music running in a safe and powerful. Are the usual influences: Metallica, Venom, Slayer, Carcass with some things (step "Heartwork") and some metal from Gothenburg, all within a context of violence and brutality well understood, making up for lack of originality with strength , ability and even a touch of hook. A tip: check this band. Septekh deserves recognition for their excellent work.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.rocknreelreviews.com

Image

By Dave

Rocking Corpses are a relatively new Finnish band who combine Rock, Death Metal and Horror themes. The band are Tony D.K, Leper Laze and Vile, although all instruments were recorded by Tony D.K for the new album ‘Rock ‘n’ Rott’.
The bands name pretty much sums up what they are all about, Rock, Death, Zombies and Copses. To be honest the name suits them down to the ground, if I try to imagine what type of music a Rocking Corpse would listen to, this would probably be it.
The album is mainly dominated by a southern blues feel, but at the same time its very Death Metal orientated too.
First track ‘Up from the Grave’ sounds like it should be on the soundtrack for TV series True Blood with its redneck tinged riffs. The vocals may take you a few listens to come to terms with, switching between clean rock vocals and guttural Death Metal growls it’s very much a case of opposite extremes.
‘Necroplis’ is next and it has an unbelievably catchy opening guitar lick. So much so I’m using it as my mobile phone ringtone. It’s one southern motherfucker and probably one of my favourite tracks on the album.
As I delve further into ‘Rock n Rott’ I notice the track titles are in a logical order. Each title is gradually telling a story of a corpse crawling out of its grave and rocking out in a city. It’s a cool idea and makes me take notice of the track titles a little more than usual.
The album continues on in this vein and I have to say it’s a little weird at times but I do quite like it. It’s not going to be everyone’s thing I can guarantee but I like the bluesy swagger this album brings.
Track 8 ‘Rocking Corpses’ steps on the gas a little more and opts for a more up-tempo head banging approach, again with some nice southern riffage on display from Tony.
Sometimes I find that Tony’s clean vocals are a little unsteady, but kudos on his Death Metal vocals; they are fucking brutally low.
Tony states some of his influences as AC/DC, Motorhead, Clutch, Entombed and Pungent Stench. To be honest you can hear a lot of those bands on this album, but that’s to be expected as he recorded it himself.
The band has recently acquired a drummer by the name of Vile and will hopefully do some live shows in the near future. As far as I’m aware the band haven’t played live yet, so it would be interesting to hear how this comes across in a live setting.
As I said before this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re a sucker for well written Southern Death Rock riffs then give it a listen.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by metalasfuck.net

Image

By metalasfuck

Swedish death metal band kicks up a stink.
Formed in 2011 by a quartet of Swedish metal diehards, Fetus Stench was snapped up quickly after putting together a four-song demo of crushing death metal. Such was the overwhelming response to the aural ear-bashing they wasted little time in releasing their first LP.
From ex-Blood Red Throne drummer Emil Wiksten’s opening drum explosion letting in Andreas "Björte" Björnson’s throaty scream, Stillbirth is a pummelling debut. The gloriously racing, crunching guitars of Björnson, Christoffer "Illern" Ilberg and the throbbing bass of Kristian "Bullen" Karlsson are constantly being chased by Wiksten’s unyielding beat.
The four cuts from that early demo are among the stand out tracks. The devastating opener Meat Grinder Flesh Obliteration, Stillborn Son, Severe Suffering and the chilling finale By Butchery Divorced sound like each instrument is trying to rip the other apart. The Outer Island provides the most unforgiving death metal riff competing in a battle against the battering drums.
The labour was quick and the delivery near faultless. The resulting offspring is anything but still; it’s charging about the place crashing against every surface. And like any ill-behaved baby, you can’t ignore it.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By Hong Rui

Every once in awhile surprises spring forth in the often overly serious metal circle, poking fun at and parodying the aesthetics and attitudes that are prevalent within the genre. Finland’s Rocking Corpses, evidently, is one such band, with their over the top emphasis on themes of gore and horror in their music on their debut full length album, Rock N’ Rott.
The listener is greeted with a haunting sound sample on opening track Into the Grave, and the horror theme that the band has put in their music is immediately evident. And as the introductory track fades into the first proper track Up from the Grave, one is smouldered by the thick and heavy groovy riffs of Tony, while a contrasting standard rock-beat is played at the background on the drums, and the unique musical approach of Rocking Corpses is now clearly heard. For example, there is the vocal style of the band, with verses that are growled out in a typical death metal fashion while choruses are often catchy and sung out in clean vocals. There is also the lead guitar playing style of Tony, often displaying a very blues-rock influence, and this definitely gives Rocking Corpses a fresh sound compared to their other death metal peers.
Throughout the album, the wide range of influences that the band has put into their music are explored, and these often not only test the band’s ability as musicians, but also as songwriters as well as they attempt to fuse elements from genres not related to death metal into their basic foundation of death metal and blues-inspired rock and roll. For example, Necropolis contains sections that are pure hard rock that are placed between heavy death metal segments, and For Better for Worse even includes an intense, almost thrash metal-sounding intro segment. Fortunately, for the most part, the band manages to do so in a way that does not sound awkward or affect the entertainment quality of their music. The themes of gore that the band glorifies in their music is also upheld with moments such as on Life for a Life with the sound samples at the background, sounding like a mindless zombie feasting on what’s left of a corpse.
Unfortunately, it is also this inclusion of the diverse range of influences that is the downfall of Rocking Corpses. While the idea of including elements from various rock and metal subgenres could be a good idea, there are moments on the album where potentially brilliant ideas are not fully explored with the band’s obsession with including as many influences as possible, or the sudden switching of style just as things start to sound good. 925 even sounds like a standard, uninspired, radio-friendly hard rock song and does not fully display the talent that the duo have, and would easily put off metal purists.
That said though, despite its debatable genre classification, Rocking Corpses‘ Rock N’ Rott is an extremely fun album to listen to – not only because of their gore themes, but the fun attitude of the band towards their music is easily heard on the album. The music here is catchy as hell, and as the album progresses, one can’t help but find himself humming along to the tunes.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.hailsandhorns.com

Image

By Tony Shrum

Well that was a fun fifteen minutes of impure, overly adulterated death metal. Just the way it ought to be. I’m not sure what else to say about the new HUMANGLED album. The EP has only four tracks, each lasting just under the four-minute mark. They’re all worth noting. The track “Skinned, to Feel All” has a weird tempo change, but it fits in rather well. None of the tracks are groundbreaking or overly innovative, but I’m a firm believer that if you do what you do well, you don’t always have to be. If you’re a fan of DYING FETUS or even NAPALM DEATH, make sure to keep HUMANGLED on your radar.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.hailsandhorns.com

Image

By Tony Shrum

RADIATION SICKNESS gives a solid attempt at thrusting themselves (back?) into relevancy of the extreme metal scene with their first studio release in twenty years, Reflections of a Psychotic Past. Most of the tracks are short and sweet (less than two and a half minutes) with some noticeable thrash and death metal influences. They do a nice job making sure you know they have a bass player and give him a few funky breaks from time to time, which feel a little odd but fitting. At times, the guitar work seems a little muddled, but that may just have to do with the recording. Notable tracks on the album would be “Graveside View,” “No Future,” and “Malignant Existence.” All in all, had this album been put out twenty years ago, no doubt it would have ruled, and for those of you who believe they haven’t made real metal since 1991, by all means, gobble it up. However, released in 2012, this album can easily fall to the wayside of more progressive bands of the same genre who have managed to stay frothing in metalheads’ mouths.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by http://www.hailsandhorns.com

Image

By Tony Shrum

At first glance, the name FETUS STENCH may come off as absurd but I implore any lover of brutal, unforgiving death metal to give these guy’s a close listen. Featuring a lineup consisting in part of former Blood Red Throne members; Stillbirth, the band’s first album, position these Swede’s as a force to be reckoned with. Combining sterling production with unbridled skill from each musician, this thirty-seven minute juggernaut blasts, bludgeons and thrashes from start to finish. Guitar player Christoffer “Illern” Ilberg and axe slinger/front man Andreas “Björte” Björnson, are channeling the tones of Gothenburg pioneers like AT THE GATES or early IN FLAMES and combining them with a much more in your face/traditional death metal approach to their playing. The solo’s are refreshingly original sounding and are executed beautifully with my only gripe being that for once there are not enough of them. But these guys don’t focus on the typical wankery of some current trends in death metal, mindlessly showing off for endless amounts of time with no substance to the music. Instead they opt for a more straightforward sound, making it about crafting a good song. Tracks that showcase this dynamic duo the best include ‘The Outer Island’, ‘Severe Suffering’ and ‘Descending Into the Realm of the Dead’. All this is paired with Björnson’s viscous vocals, which croon so soothingly over the strings and always maintain their consistency and power. The rhythm section is just as tight as the guitars and vocals. Bassist Kristian “Bullen” Karlsson holds it all together with brilliant tone and a solid performance throughout the entirety of the record. And drummer Emil Wiksten can only be described as a beast on the set. He smashes his drum skins mercilessly into submission with unbridled speed, doing so without the assistance of drum trigger’s or digital double bass. All these things combined together make for an extremely solid album that never drags or gets boring. And when an album is this good hearing is believing, so do yourself a favor and pick this album up on the Abyss Records website for a whopping nine bucks! Or better yet, visit FETUS STENCH’S Facebook and snag a copy from the band. Put some money in the pockets of the artists and support true underground metal. For me, this is definitely one of the biggest surprises of 2012 and an album I will be bumping for a long time to come.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.hailsandhorns.com

Image

By Tony Shrum

CORROSIVE CARCASS’ first offering through Abyss Records, Composition of Flesh, is 41 minutes of grimy old school, down tempo death metal that beckons the early works of their Swedish brethren ENTOMBED and death metal god father’s OBITUARY. This album consists of thirteen tracks featuring blistering guitar and bass work and putrid vocals. Composition of Flesh has its fair share of speed but tends to slow it down more often than not. Opting instead to incorporate sludgy death metal riffs the likes of Domination-era MORBID ANGEL that will make your evil, death metal, bastard soul feel satisfied. The harsh tones of the overly distorted guitar and bass blend beautifully into the mix, complimenting each other every step of the way. This is definitely my favorite part about the record. It has huge potential to be exactly what any OG death metal fan is looking for in terms of songwriting, and overall presentation. So it’s pretty unfortunate that the album is plagued by pretentious, shoddy production that almost murders it dead in its tracks. Yes, lo-fi production is something I believe will add to a record in the right circumstances including this one had it been done correctly. But the drums are so muddy that often times they just come across as clicks from the double bass or hisses from the cymbals. Meanwhile, the snare drum just muddles right along and never does anything to accent any part of the music. I also can’t tell if there’s any rolls or fills on the toms at any point, basically rendering the drums useless. And what’s the deal with the vocal production? All respect given to the strong performance on the album; there’s just too much reverb going on. It sounds like the album is trapped in an echo chamber. This aspect is so in your face and constant that it’s almost comedic and is a big detractor from everything going on around it. These are all things that cannot be attributed directly to CORROSIVE CARCASS. But the record itself focuses too hard on trying to create a creepy mood that never really follows through. It begins to drag and sound un-focused as it goes along. Seems to me like the man who helmed the production put too much emphasis in the wrong departments. Attempting to immolate the sounds of the early contributions to death metal rather then focusing on crafting a memorable, original sound for the album. Ultimately, Composition of Flesh is a tough pill to swallow much like SUFFOCATION’S classic Breeding the Spawn, in that it suffers from the same carelessness on the soundboard. Despite its problems though, the latter is still considered a classic so maybe Composition of Flesh will be held in the same regard. It may not be for me, but please listen for yourself and form your own opinion and share it

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.axestogrind.com

Image

By Admin

I don’t think you can mention Florida in metal circles without immediately thinking of the Old School Death Metal movement. In one breath, any true metal fan can name at least a half dozen Death Metal bands based in the Sunshine State. Whether its CANNIBAL CORPSE, OBITUARY, DEATH or MORBID ANGEL – all helped shape the Old School Death Metal sound that laid the foundation for much of what we hear today. Fast forward to 2012, and there are more modern Death Metal bands than you can keep up with.

SOUTHWICKED is one such current act, and are based out of Florida. Not only that, but the band’s lead guitarist is none other than Allen West of ex-OBITUARY/ex-SIX FEET UNDER fame. These guys pull from both the Swede Death and the Old School Florida Death styles to form their sound. SOUTHWICKED contains trademark death growls, driving chord work that changes pace throughout the album, and well-placed solos that are not overbearing.

The percussion on ‘Death’s Crown’ is a bit punchy at times, which I found a bit out of place at various points. This did not ruin the album for me, and as I listened on, my ears seemed to adapt to it. Highlight tracks on this effort include “Craving for Blood”, “The Phantom Prince”, and the streaming track below, “Graveyard of Bones”. Be sure to leave a comment on what you thought of the tune – I am definitely interested in your thoughts.
