DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

OK, so you come from Latvia and you play sludgy, doomy metal. Should that be enough for me to sit up and take notice. Actually it is. Diseim are not as bad as the description make them out to be. This is for sure doomy. Sludgy and not very positive metal but hey, who needs that in world like ours. What is some positive re-enforcement ever going to do to change the downfall of the world as we know it? Why not go out with a big bang. Let Diseim be the soundtrack to the dissolving of everything we love and hold dear. Or not. Just let them entertain you for a moment to get your head off how you’ll survive the Mayan prediction of the end of the World in 2012.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

OK, so you form a band in 2003 go through some problems and then release a debut album in 2012. That to me screams determination. Nothing will ever break us seem to be the motto of Eternal Helcarax. And for that I applaud them. There is enough shit going on in the world that you have to go through that you don’t need it to hinder your creativity too. Having no idea what this band is all about I just sat back and opened up my senses. It started with a sombre piano piece. What was to come could have been anything from the most serene to the fully apocalyptic. What I got was some sort of epicness which musically kinda reminded me of Immortal, without the chaos. This is black metal in that same cold northern aura. As I like Immortal I came to like this too. There is something to the music that brings forth a tale of glory and hopefulness. I like that it gives me a positive feedback.

Biography:
Fueled with hatred against the current state of brutal music, Fetus Stench is here to bring the death back into death metal. Hailing from Karlstad, Sweden, the band members are anything but newcomers and if you check their back history you will find experience including multiple tours opening for bands like Dimmu Borgir, Grave, Enslaved, releasing a handful of records with bands like Blood Red Throne, The Law and more. Andreas Björnson, Christoffer Ilberg, Kristian Karlsson and Emil Wiksten has now joined forces in Fetus Stench.

In February 2011, two months after their formation, Fetus Stench landed a record deal with Abyss Records in just one week after releasing their first demo. SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

Swedeath has come to mean a thing in the international metal scene. And with each new generation it is re-invented to mean something new. Septekh may hail from the Stockholm area and they sound nothing like Entombed or Dismember but still just as them. Know what I mean? But raw and basic it is. Just like Nihilist and Autopsy sounded once upon a time. Throw in some Repulsion in the picture too and you get a pretty good idea of just how raw and basic this is. Septekh could very easily be the next contender for the Swedeath throne. An opponent for the throne. Tribulation look out! I can’t help tapping my foot to this. It is just so cool to hear more and more bands going back to basic these days. It almost makes my eyes tear up. Cool stuff from yet another Swedeath exponent.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) "Tyrants and Men" DIGI CD review by http://www.metalreviews.com

Image

By Alex

As Amon Amarth popularity keeps rising all over the planet, it was bound to happen that new, young, up-and-coming band was going to ride the same stormy chopped pagan-populated waters. The wave of the Norsk bravery kept rolling high and finally reached Homer, Alaska, where some guy named Hiram Lohr put a band together with a strange title Thousand Year War. The “band” would actually be an overstatement, as it is my understanding that the bass and drum players were studio musicians for hire. Most of the guitars and vocals, and probably all of the music and concept behind Thousand Year War must be Hiram Lohr’s creation.
Not to give you a faulty impression that Thousand Year War is a mere Amon Amarth clone, but you are sure to recognize the Swedes’ style in bouncy battle-forward riffs of Defiance and The Sea, and even “Thor, Odin’s son, protector …” seems to fall nicely onto the melodic wall-of-sound chorus of Defiance. Yet Thousand Year War wants to stretch itself in terms of songwriting, and as the album develops, more and more nuggets of their own continue to surface. It is if the allegiances of the band need to be declared early, with their own take on the style to follow. The twin guitar melodies in The Sea continuously build up and will definitely make for a favorable impression. Thrashy and bubbly Open Casket screams with brimless energy, another positive attribute for the band. The playful riff of No Gods, No Masters sets up the tone, and pulls back in the 2nd part of the chorus yielding way to some rebellious tremolo. Yes, this defiant, proud, noisy and unpolished way of guitar playing, supported and propelled by the double bass punches (Amon Amarth needs to be mentioned again) is a significant part of how melodies are structured on Tyrants and Men.
Mid-way through Thousand Year War covers The Storm I Ride by I, and yet another influence on the band’s style comes into focus. The raspiness in Hiram Lohr’s vocals never reaches the growling depths of Johan Hegg, and Abbath sounds more grim and creaky, but the vocals manage well enough on Tyrants and Men. After this cover (which may be a bit too soon for something only a few years old) Thousand Year War shakes the shackles of melodic Swedish death metal off, and does more for itself with the epic and heroic Warriors of Deceit and closing title track, militaristic march of Spartacus and fast bullet-train ride of One Final Breath. The ideas in these cuts still showcase Thousand Year War as its own entity, but do better in the creativity department than the downtuned somewhat hardcorish riff in the middle of the band-eponymous song.
Familiarity in the case of Tyrants and Men does not breed contempt, and the album is a solid debut. It can and should be enjoyed for what it is – melodic death metal with familiar Swedish overtones and pagan themes. Where Thousand Year War goes from here is another story, as another album with similar sounding songs would be considered stagnation.
Killing Songs : Defiance, The Sea, No Gods No Masters, Warriors of Deceipt, Spartacus

TORTURE DIVISION (Sweden) "Evighetens Dårar" DIGI CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Sergio Fernández

Well, in this new "Evighetens Darar" we meet three of the band's demos released so far, ie "Evighetens Darar I, II and III", aside from three songs to be recorded in the next work TORTURE DIVISION: "Inhuman Traumatic Severance", "Total Death Punishment" and "Overtorture (Bound To Be Dead)." That is definitely the biggest attraction of this collection while on the other hand, the band has already posted these issues on myspace for more joy of their fans.
Speaking of the demos itself, the three were mixed and mastered by the ubiquitous Dan Swanö in Unisound Studios.
Speaking of sound, the production is more than correct with instruments that sound into perspective. The new songs have the same score line does not differ at all from his previous work but of course there are different nuances that make rubbings are not each other. For example, in "Inhuman Traumatic Severance" highlights the good Lord K Philipson work on creating a sound to quite audible. These three new songs sound much more modern and sugarcane, with less melodic passages of which we had used, which for positive for me is not too distant future.
Jörgen's voice is aggressive, powerful and directly to your eardrums while still showing as Tobias VOMITORY for example, that just about your battery level in the global metal head death scene.

In short, a good compilation that leaves a nice aftertaste waiting for the next material in this trio of pure Scandinavian Death Metal.

Rating: 9/10

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://www.cvltnation.com

Image

By Jonathan Keane

Heed the sound of the hordes marching, spears and swords in hand and an unquenchable fire in their hearts. The first full-length album from Irish black metal warriors Eternal Helcaraxe recalls those very sounds, with each of the eight tracks weaving tales of bloodied battles and undying will. Unavoidably grandiose in scope and emotionally impinged, “Against All Odds” is laden with poignant battle cries, sprawling string arrangements and searing buzzsaw riffs, all crafting a vast panoramic view but all the while still being a punishing and unrelenting black metal record.
Despite all its influences of melodic elements, at their core Cavan’s Eternal Helcaraxe are a black metal band that subscribe to the old school and a rich flavour of Norway and Finland run rampant in their sound with throaty rasps from the vile depths and grim, howling guitar work that can often be reminiscent of Sargeist.
First track proper, “One Still Stands Here” is a trove of emotive lead guitars and scorching vocals that lay down an equally beautiful and devastating opening salvo. “Invictus” is the album’s first instance of utilising a string section, and it’s a sprawling track that spreads it wings vastly and at this point you know Eternal Helcaraxe have truly laid down their gauntlet.
Lyrically, the band has different angles taken with viewing their battlefields. There’s a somewhat nationalist ideology with love of culture and country featured throughout the album. Such lyrics can be often be cringe worthy and even if presented in a too confrontational manner can seem xenophobic. On “Against All Odds” the lyrics simply become an afterthought, overshadowed by titanic riffs and war torn atmosphere, and certainly don’t conjure any negative social connotations such as xenophobia like some other BM acts can do.
A notable mention must be made of the utterly devastating, and equally captivating, drumming. Between the soaring string sections on “Invictus”, drummer Tyrith lays down pummelling blastbeats and intense rhythms, and throughout the album, layers each song with tasteful drum fills. Sporadically placed in the album are some chilling clean vocals, tastefully and expertly utilised. In fact, the trio of vocals from Praetorian, Maulgrim and Thule are all skilfully executed.
To end is the title track, the album’s ambitious 11 minute closer, opening with rampant and evocatively charged verses, laying down one last ode to battle and rounds off the album with a Primordial-like closing riff that hypnotically pulls the curtain on Eternal Helcaraxe’s stunning first album.
The album is out now from Abyss Records.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.beowolfproductions.com

Image

By beowolfproductions

Sweden offers us up another amazing Metal band, this time in the form of DESULTOR. These guys formed back in 2007 and have just unleashed their debut full length album "MASTERS OF HATE". These guys play a unique style of Progressive Metal music. They combine many elements of Thrash, Speed, Death & Power Metal together to create their sound. The music itself falls more in the range of Thrash & Death Metal music, but it's much more. It has a really huge Epic Metal feel over all. This comes into play because of the technical and strong song structures and the clean crisp guitar work. They add in lots of Speed & Power Metal arrangements in the guitar sound as well. The hyper fast paced drumming is where a lot of the Death metal dominates. The vocals are acombination of all these styles as well. There is clean melodic higher pitched Power Metal vocals, with mid ranged harsher Thrash Metal type screams and then some lower ended Death Metal growls. This band definitely has a lot to offer fans of all styles of Metal music. It was a long time coming for this debut release, but it was well worth the wait! If your into Metal of any form then pick this up!

BANE (Serbia) Interview by http://www.exitfest.org

BANE "...the show at Exit Fest will definitely be one of the last ones in Serbia..."

Image

By Milan Rakic

We had an exclusive chat with Branislav of BANE, one of the most active bands on nowadays Metal scene in Serbia.
They are waiting for you at EXPLOSIVE stage 2012!

Hi. What's going on in the band these days?

Hi! We are currently preparing the final design touches for our upcoming album “The Acausal Fire” (see preview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw-VTB0e55c) which will be released in August/September via US Label Abyss Records. Apart form that we are slowly getting ready for the few Festival shows we have this summer.

Your very first vinyl release just showed up. Congratulations! What can you tell us about that release? Also, what's your relationship with vinyl releases?

Thanks a lot! It`s a 7” Split between us and our Russian mates Lycanthropy released on German Label Knochensack. Our song called “As Chaos Rises” contains special guest appearance from Lord Beezanborgh, the Danish musician who is known for him works in Rex Satanachia and Temple Of Baphomet. The vinyl is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies only, and first 200 are actually white vinyl with extra booklet. For orders write here: [email protected]
As for my vinyl relationship – to be honest I rather collect Tapes and CD`s, but obviously it`s a cult format and very nice to know that sales in the music industry have grown up in the past few years since the re-incarnation of massive vinyl production.

In the last several months band almost completely changed line up so, you're now (again) the only member from the past. Why is that hard to full fill the suitable line up? Is the new one what satisfies you?

Yeah…well it`s simply a question weather you can be devoted 666% to the band or not. I personally find myself to be a very tolerant person who likes to have fun as much as possible, but on the other hand when it comes to the band - no compromises will be made. With that being said, vast majority of people who consider themselves “musicians” simply don`t share the same vision as I, so logically at some point we part ways in order to have a faster and healthier continuance with the band.
The current line-up is definitely a very stable one, although we lack of rehearsals since Marko, the drummer lives in Sarajevo (Bih), which disables us form seeing each other frequently and work on the songs together. Until date we`ve only had one rehearsal (the four of us), but luckily he has amazing drum skills and the band sounds very tight in my opinion since we welcomed him aboard so I guess you can say that I am satisfied with this line-up.

Recently the band officially stated that Bane will be playing live shows on European soil only up to October and then, huge break will follow. Can you tell us more about that matter?

That`s right. The thing is that I will be re-locating in Canada most-likely somewhere in mid October, and due to my personal plans I`ll have to put the band “on hold” status, hopefully for a short time only, that is, until I find a line-up there who is willing to keep the Legacy alive.
So, the show at Exit Fest will definitely be one of the last ones in Serbia, and generally in Europe for a really long time. Hopefully the band will return in Europe for a Tour if everything goes fine, but that won`t be before 2014 at it`s earliest.

Since the very beginning band was very active on live stages. What live shows represent to you?

There were many great shows since the band played so far in over 10 countries since 2010…but some memorable ones was supporting Malevolent Creation in Bulgaria, Decapitated in Serbia, and definitely all club & festival shows in Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Mostly, you've played in smaller clubs and festivals. What do you expect from playing at huge mainstream fest as Exit is?

The most important thing is the there are still people who fight for Metal, and that there is a possibility for the people here to come support some of their favorite bands and enjoy the shows, specially when it`s such a big event as Exit festival.
Personally I never have any expectations anywhere because the music I play and sing – I simply do it for myself only, but it will definitely be fun to play with all those bands whom we`ll be sharing the stage with that night.

Can you share some recent news and plans with our Explosive fans?

We recently released our first official video clip and also first single from our 2nd full-length album. The track is called “In Endless Silence” and you can check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb10-wDj7iM
Beside that…more or less all recent activities have been mentioned during this interview, so I guess this wraps it up!

Thanx for that short chat and see you in a few weeks at Explosive stage!

Sounds good, thanks a lot for the support and see you there bro!

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.beowolfproductions.com

Image

By beowolfproductions

Up from the grave and coming back to life is Norway's FESTER. These guys are one of the pioneersof Blackened Death Metal music. Starting back in 1989 and going to the mid nineties when the brokeup. After a compilation release back in 2010, the band reformed and "A CELEBRATION OFDEATH" is their first offering. The band plays a slower dirty version of Death Metal music. The music has a real raw and cold Black Metal feel to it that covers most of their sound. There is some harsh and hallowed passages mixed through out. The vocals are done in a thick gritty Black Metal type growl that takes me back to a lot of the Death & Black Metal bands coming out of Sweden, Norway & Finland in the late 80's & early 90's. Fans of newer more symphonic Black Metal may not enjoy these guys, but it's Black Metal played in the original form. This is must for all die hard Black Metal fans! Horns raised!!!

DISEIM (Latvia) Interview by aquelarrezine

Image

By Paul Caravasi

Diseim was formed in 2007 by the drummer Imants Vovers and the guitarist Dmitrijs Bulavskis. In 2008 the vocalist and the songwriter Sergey Stavro joined the band. Starting from that moment the high-speed drum beats and grinding guitar riffs are accompanied by poignant growling. In 2009 the bass guitarist Alex Makarovs joins the band. In 2009 the band frequently performs live and records the first demo Sinner in the Sound Park studio.Band members have previously related with notable Latvian independent acts Country Death, Skyforger, Gatling, Errectory, Collide, Goreslut, Nycticorax, and other.

1-Hi there ,before i start doing this interview,i need to know, does everyone in the band always agree on the band's musical direction? I'm asking this because i hear a lot of brutal diverisity in the album.

-Yes, everyone agrees. Just all of us love a lot of different things and we wanted to get as much as possible in our music.

2-Does it bother you that the metal scene worldwide has changed now,i mean it's not the 80's or 90's when every band was so unique.Do you believe in the evolution of metal ? please don't take Metallica like a reference or nu metal for example.

-Metal scene is always changing, from the very beginning, so we feel this is a normal way evolution goes. Metal will never die!

3-What do you think of the media right now? Is there enough support to metal, what do you think about that?

-Metal is still pretty much in the underground, at least here in Latvia. Some more publicity would be desirable but beeing in underground gives some strength as well.

4-Listening to your album,i found some influences of old celtic frost. Can you tell me what are your influences and favorites bands?

-We have wide range of influences, including Celtic Frost,of course.

5-How did you hook up with abyss records?

-Alex was sending link to our MySpace page to the whole world. And Dan from Abyss Records got in touch and seemed to be interested in our old school style.

6-How would you describe the music of Diseim?

-20 years of living with and in metal

7-Do you view diseim as a long-term commitment?

-Well, it's 5 years for us already, so it's probably more than short-term

8-What can you tell to the metalheads that don't know the band yet?

-Just try it!

9-Are you touring a lot?

-Not much.

11-Well friends ,thanks a lot for your time and patience in answer my questions ,i hope to hear a new album of the band soon.Any final words to the readers of this zine?

-Old school is the fundament and history of metal and we should value that.

SINCERA (Norway) "Cursed and Proud" DIGI CD review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Sincera are a band from Norway that consists of some weel known veterans in the scene that plays a mixture of deark and black metal and this is a review of their 2011 album "Cursed And Proud" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from slow, midpaced to fast drumming with a good amount of blast beats being thrown in, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful tone with riffs that have a 90's Greek black metal feel to them, as for the synths when they are utilized they add a very dark and atmospheric 90's style black metal feel to the music.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, midpaced to fast riffs that mix dark and black metal together with some melodies being thrown in, while the lead guitars are very dark and melodic guitar leads.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some ocassional death metal growls, spoken word parts and clean singing while the lyrics cover dark and anti christian themes, as for the production it has a very dark and powerful sound and you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording in adition there are some live tracks on the recording which have a more raw feeling than the studio songs.

In my opinion Sincera are a very good dark/black metal band and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band. RECEMMONDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Tall And Proud" "Blinded" "Die Like Jesus" and "Byron Lawless". RECEMMONDED BUY.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by autothrall

Image

By autothrall

The first thing that struck me about the Entrench debut was the gaudy and colorful cover art, which to some might seem disgusting or tasteless, but to this old timer, brought me back to the halcyon days of the 80s when a lot of bands on the underground circuit simply did not have the scratch or pull to get some masterpiece illustration or painting for their recordings (see Anvil Bitch, etc.) Blasted out buildings of antiquity, a straight red logo and nothing pretentious or presumptuous anywhere in sight. This is all too fitting for Inevitable Decay, an album which does its damned best to recapture the virile energy of the German band Kreator during their prime of the mid 80s period, from the vocals to the intensity of the riffing.

Now, it's not 100% Kreator worship, but it's damned close. You'll also hear a lot of their fellows Destruction in the crisper guitar tone, plus the belligerent bluster of Sodom, but in general, there is an indisputable, highly Germanic retrospective element happening here. Rather than just settle into the shadows as a tribute, though, Entrench actually implement some thunder and lightning to their compositions, so despite their obvious derivation they've got an admittedly fun fucking debut album with this, and one that I've been listening to several times just because I truly rue the fact that there aren't more bands today doing SOMETHING with this sound (even the progenitors have moved onwards). The many demos this Swedish band recorded prior to the full-length have obviously sharpened their skills and dedication, and Inevitable Decay must now join Havok's Time is Up as one of the premiere 'retro' thrash recordings of the year 2011. So, there. I have decreed it! It must be true! Oh, stop snickering in the background.

Like almost every good thrash record, this one functions due to not only the bleeding speed and proficiency of its musicians, but also the varied pacing dynamics which make it feel like a pure 80s effort, since there were few bands in that day that would go 100% in one direction without the rock influence of multiple tempos, power ballads and such. Entrench can thrust along with intricate numbers like "As Dawn Breaks" and "Doubt What's Left" which recall Pleasure to Kill, Kill 'Em All and Sentenced to Death at their most blistering, but they also tone down the speed for some great mid-paced chops throughout "Into Oblivion", "Portrait of a Phobia" or "Blind Illusion" (try NOT banging your head out to that last one). But what really rules about this band is that such obvious effort has been placed in every track...none of these tunes feel like 'filler', even if they can all be traced back to the 25-year lineage of the genre.

Inevitable Decay does not 'advance' or expand the thrash metal genre. This is not Vektor, who have a good chance of offering us some progression in places. But for what they do, Entrench are damned good at it, and if I am to sit through a record which celebrates what must be my favorite of all sub-genres, then I want it to be serious, energetic and durable. These songs aren't all about fucking sluts, drinking beers and being 'OMG WE'RE SO THRASH'. This is not the work of petulant children, but guys who really love those old records and want to do honor by them. With such a cavalcade of blazing riffage and authentic, thin yet potent production, they have the potential to quicken paces and disable pacemakers everywhere. Inevitable Decay is not an original or innovative work, but in every other category of consideration, it kicks asses straight into the goal.

Rating: 8.5/10

BANE (Serbia) "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" DIGI CD review by metalbelieve

Image

By Morbid Deceiver

Bane is a black/death metal band from Novi Sad, Serbia that started off in 2006, but had some problems and were on hold for a couple of years. They released a demo in 2007 and an EP in 2010, but their full length album “Chaos, Darkness and Emptiness” was released October of 2010.
I honestly didn’t think that in Serbia there was such an active metal scene, until I listened to these guys.
I am not a big fan of black metal or anything related to black metal, but Bane’s album blew my mind away. Their songs incorporate a mix of symphonic elements with oldschool black metal riffs and vocals and a death metal drum line.
The album also has a melodic touch to it, we can find some clean vocals in songs such as “Pandemonium”, and also clean riffs in “Lost shadows”.
The interesting thing is that the album is very organized: the first song and the last song are both instrumental, symphonic that is, and it is an awesome way to start an album, in my opinion.

There is also another instrumental song in the middle of the album, so it’s like you get off to a calm start, then you get into the hard part of the album, then you take a break, after that you start with the hard part again and in the end you can rest again.
It is a very original album, as I said before , they manage to condense a lot of styles in every song, without making them chaotic or tiring.
In what concernes the lyrics, they are basically talking about life, evolution, death, suffering, disease - every song is a poem .
To conclude, I believe “Chaos, Darkness and Emptiness” is a great album, and every listener and non-listener of black metal and subgenres of black metal should give it a try cause it’s really worth it, and also if you have the opportunity to see these guys live, don’t hesitate, because they put on a hell of a show.

Favourite songs: The True Insomnia, Pandemonium, Plague Upon Yourself , Abhorrence

RADIATION SICKNESS To Unleash Reflections of A Psychotic Past
On June 22nd Via Abyss Records

Image

Legendary Indianapolis' Crusty Crossover Thrashers of the Extreme RADIATION SICKNESS, will be releasing their first studio album in 20 years on Abyss Records on Friday, June 22nd as part of the label's Summer of Sickness Campaign 2012. Entitled Reflections of a Psychotic Past, the new album from RADIATION SICKNESS features seven brand new tracks and will also include a re-mastered copy of the 1990 release The Other Me, A Journey into Insanity.

A promo video of the song "Tripping in the Seas of Madness" is posted at this location: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMdMgyY6RGQ

The band will be performing at this year's Central Illinois Metalfest, which runs July 13th & 14th at the Canopy Club in Urbana, IL. RADIATION SICKNESS plays on the 14th. Abyss Records will be a featured vendor at the fest.

Image

A Saga of Sickness...
Radiation Sickness was formed in Indianapolis, IN in 1987 by Doug Palmer and Ryan Rollins. The band was formed mainly on addiction, depression and the love for extreme underground music. While many people seem to not even give Indiana a glance when it to came to extreme grind metal RADIATION SICKNESS started making noise in the underground. The band's first guitar player soon left and Rick Callaway joined in. Soon after Mike Herald was added on drums due to his blast beat abilities and double kick skills. The band recorded their legendary
Elvis Ain't Dead demo. This demo used influences from many groups such as Napalm Death, Chaos UK, Discharge, Slayer, Cryptic Slaughter and The Accused. RADIATION SICKNESS spent every minute playing every show they could. Tragedy struck the band in 1989 when founding member Ryan Rollins gave into his depression and committed suicide. The band pressed on adding Byron Holton to Bass. Spending every weekend on the road playing with the likes of Repulsion, Impetigo, Skeletal Earth, Immolation, Macabre, Dead Horse and so on supporting their EP The Bounds of Reality. RADIATION SICKNESS went into the studio in 1990 to record a classic underground LP entitled The Other Me, A Journey into Insanity.

This record received great reviews more countless touring and even landed Radiation Sickness on the legendary A Day of Death Festival the first of its kind in Buffalo, New York with Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, Suffocation and many others. RADIATION SICKNESS started working on material for their third LP and before completion the band split up in 1992.
In October 2010 RADIATION SICKNESS performed a one-time reunion show with all original Sickness members, except for Rick on guitar. Long time friend of the band Tom Ball joined in on guitar and brought more talent and brutal rifts to the band. RS said what the fuck that was a blast and played a couple more shows. They now have recorded and are ready to release their first studio record in twenty plus years. It will be released on Abyss Records and is entitled Reflections of a Psychotic Past the release will also include a re-mastered copy of the 1990 release The Other Me, A Journey into Insanity. RADIATION SICKNESS plans to bring their madness on the road in 2012 playing several large metal fests and small tours. Look for their release soon on Abyss Records.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Tania Gimenez

What tends to happen with modern death metal groups is that when you hear many of them, you are almost all equal because few bring anything new or original. That's what it is with FETUS STENCH, a Swedish training with "Stiilbirth" makes its debut after having released their first demo last year.
The Death Metal "Stillbirth" has a clear sound, a modern approach and a great technique. One technique (especially in the guitar riffs) that at all detracts from brutality to their sound, nor cease to be very direct. In fact, the rates prevailing in the compact nine cuts are fast but they also combine in different tempos and the occasional breakdown. On the other hand, and a really clean production, we find simple but effective structures, a great guitar-work both in the solos and the riffs, the usual guttural voices within the genre and a rhythm section that plays its role, although Battery does highlight in the most overwhelming.
FETUS STENCH not offer us anything new but not desired. They just want to download the fiercest death metal and direct with an invaluable dose of technique and sound aggressive.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Manuel Sevillano

After their debut album released a couple of years, we have Italian HUMANGLED their new material, an EP titled "Odd Ethics". This quintet of Pisa follows the same recipe as usual, ie a powerful death metal with a good dose of art, great with interesting touches of progressive changes of pace and understated instrumentation.
In "Odd Ethics" will find four themes on the band gives their best through good guitar riffs that are the center of HUMANGLED sound. On the other hand we find a voice that varies in the guttural screams deeper and more aggressive, a solid rhythmic base and a more than acceptable production has resulted in a clean, clear sound, where we can enjoy every detail of sound.
HUMANGLED give us a solid EP titled "Odd Ethics" which certainly will appeal to fans of death metal with progressive touches.

Rating: 6.5/10

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by autothrall

Image

By autothrall

Ah, the fetus. That unborn paragon of innocence so soiled and exploited by the death metal community, once again taken to task, this time for its very olfactory qualities. I can't imagine the things smell great, nor would I ever wish to find out, but this new Swedish outfit has wrapped itself in the notion and exhaled its first full-length from the womb of brutality with a decidedly non-Swedish spin on the composition; always a welcome trait in a world saturated with soundalikes of Entombed, Dismember and At the Gates. No, Fetus Stench clutch the reins of US aggression handed them by Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation and ride forth into a sunset of slaughtered infants.

Stillbirth is that sort of album which straddles both a nostalgic territory and a more youthful impulse. You're not getting anything new or nuanced out of the songwriting, but the means by which they hone their 90s influences into a formidable, brickhouse slugfest loaded to the fists with tempo and riffing variation will nonetheless have you twisting your neck out of its socket. Skin basher Emil (also serving time as the most recent drummer in Blood Red Throne) is a veritable whirlwind of blasting and double bass sequences which keep the momentum up to snuff with the more contemporary, technical acts in the field, but most of the actual guitar progressions alternate between early tremolo grinding, choppy death/thrash breakdowns and palm muted recoil circa Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, etc. Nothing exceedingly complicated in terms of the raw rhythmic patterns, but an appreciable percussive mesh to levy the blunt vocals, which recall the Morbid Angel/Hate Eternal camp lent the subtext of a more visceral snarl.

Frankly, as studied and busy as Stillbirth keeps itself, there are not a lot of individual tracks that stand out through the playlist. Taken in as a whole, it's a fully competent execution with well placed leads, zero cases of lazy monotony thanks to their constant sense of transition, but there were only a few tunes like the ballistic "Brennkommando" or the surprisingly groovy "Severe Suffering" (my favorite here) with the sticky riffing that constantly made me want to hit the repeat button. The production here is so straightforward and clean that I can't say it lent much character or distinction to the album, exchanging the darkened possibility of a dirtier guitar tone for something bludgeoning and sterile. This is not so much an 'evil' record as one that bullies you upside the face repeatedly. Most of the lyrics and titles ("Bashed, Defaced, and Disfigured" for example) feel as if they'd just been reworded from familiar sources, but then again, novelty is not a characteristic bands like this specifically seek.

Fetus Stench possess all the weaponry required in the death metal of today, with their feet firmly planted in the fundamentals. They pull off a taut and muscular debut here, but it wouldn't kill them to apply more atmospherics and striking riffs into the gestalt of their arsenal.

Verdict: Win [7/10]

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by autothrall

Image

By autothrall

I vaguely remember this Italian group's debut Fractal from just a couple years back, but not enough that it left much of an impression. I will say, though, that Odd Ethics immediately struck me as a more varied and experimental work (like its title implies). Not so much that it entirely evades the bounds of its death metal roots, but enough that each of the four cuts included seems to take on a life of its own. It's almost as if one were to take the grisly old school approach of a US group like Autopsy or Necrophagia, add a touch of Pungent Stench rock n roll groove and then let the whole mess simmer in a slightly introspective sauce that makes it feel somehow progressive despite its obvious, crude impulses.

They wrench this hideous, huge distortion out of their guitars which somehow manages not to ape the huge Swedish tones so prevalent in Euro-death. Never is this more evident than in "Skinned, to Feel All" which operates off these unnerving, weird sludge/doom grooves while the vocals shift between a straightforward , deep guttural and its snarling counterpoint. "Deny Your Creed" opens with a bass-driven flood of almost ambient guitars before quickly devolving into lumbering, meaty and minimalistic death riffing; and the song "Smells Acrid" explores a similar contrast, with busier, churning rhythms. The songs seem to constantly flux between tempos, but all of the individual note progressions are actually quite simplistic, even if the tuning and chords feel slightly off kilter and disturbing.

It's never particularly catchy or evil sounding, but it certainly seems like a band opening new doors for itself to explore a sort of neanderthal hybrid of death 'n' roll which is admittedly rare. There are instances in which the various rhythms clash with one another, or rather the transitions don't seem particularly smooth, but it's interesting that they walk such a path without attempting to inject complexity and progression into the writing. That said, I found myself pretty underwhelmed by the vocals, and the 15 minutes and four songs didn't really offer me a rush of fascination. It's not an immense leap from Fractal, which was more clinical and standard to my recollection, but the stripped down, unusual approach to the riffing, and the almost poetic, ghastly sensibility to the lyrics prove a curiosity to say the least. I can't exactly sing it praises, but it's nice to hear a band work its way outside the box once in awhile. And Humangled does just that: goes out on a limb, then severs that appendage and gnaws upon it.

Verdict: Indifference [6.25/10]

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) "Ars Vitae" CD review by http://southerndarkness.net

Image

By southerndarkness

Diabolical 15 years has caused confusion among the closed minds, constantly progressing, and refusing to do what expected. In his early work, "Deserts of Desolation" (mini album 2000) and "Synergy" (2001) Diabolical always stood out as different from the classic death metal bands of the period, representing a complicated thing to categorize a style.
The reception from fans and the press was good from the start, resulting in extensive coverage in the media of the time.
Following the success of second album "A Thousand Deaths" (2002) the band played shows in Europe several times over the years from 2002 to 2003 with Amon Amarth, Vomitory and Defleshed among others, starred in the Open Hell Festival (2002), and Kaltenbach Open Air (2003).

The disks were then re released in South America and also in the U.S..
Between 2004 and 2008 the band only did a few live performances due to the intense and growing work producing other bands Widgren in Necromorbus Studio.
But in 2008, after several years of problems with different labels, Diabolical made his return with all his strength and left a masterpiece in the Death metal leaving listeners in the darkest depths of the human mind to attract the repressed aggression hunger for revenge to life in "The Gallery of Bleeding Art".
The album received glowing reviews and was followed by two small but very successful tours throughout Europe.

In November 2010 Diabolical out the single "Eye", and now, in February through Abyss Records comes the latest work called "Ars Vitae", which contains 17 tracks from different eras of the band's career. This album was recorded at Studio Necromorbus in 2010, and was again produced by Sverker Widgren founding member. Also the CD contains a live concert that was never released, and a remastered version of "Deserts of Desolation" MCD, and exhausted for years.

Having been part of the Death Metal scene for 15 years and releasing albums for over a decade, Diabolical in "Ars Vitae" brings out the best of his work until today, showing that the band is progressing and has a great future ahead!
Strongly recommended for new generations and more veterans who want to have the best of one of the greatest exponents of Swedish Death Metal!

WAN (Sweden) "Wolves of the North" CD review by http://www.funeralrain.net

Image

By General Blaspheme

This is a fairly lengthy album from Wan, 13 tracks in a genre that is sometimes known for eight-song full lengths. And it’s pretty damn good, to top it all off.
It’s a mid-paced black metal, with a cold atmosphere and grim vocals. It’s nothing that will cause immediate brain seizures at first listen, or riots in listeners, or any of that stuff. It’s not a major breakthrough in black metal, and it’s probably not going to make Wan into the hugest band in black metal. But what this album is, is a solid and perfect example of what black metal’s aesthetics are.
It relies less on punk and thrash than some bands, taking a more bass guitar driven sound with a lot less tremolo picking, with the drums buried in the back except the snare, of course, and a very clicky bass drum sound.
Personally, I think it kicks a fair amount of ass, and it’s actually interesting to listen to.

ANGREPP (Sweden) "Warfare" DIGI CD review by http://www.infernalmasquerade.com

Image

By Dark Emperor

Is nice to finally hear some Black/Thrash Metal that is not trying to sound too ‘oldschool’ or too brutal. Angrepp manages to perfectly Thrashy riffs, Punk-ish rhytms, and powerful vocals, creating a very thick sound that will surely please metal fans since the first couple of minutes of this CD.
The opening song (after the Intro) “Five Horned Formation” wastes no time in establishing that the band’s riff machine is open for serious business. With a very powerful Thrashy opening riff, you will think that you are listening to the new Exodus, or something like that. After the initial impression settles, you will be quickly taken away by the surgically precise drumming that makes your head explode.
Most songs follow the same formula and they heavily rely on the guitars to drive the songs. The band manages to mix up some Black Metal elements with the overal Thrash sound of “Warfare”, creating nifty songs like “Legions Arise” that weaves between ‘traditional’ Thrash sections and darker BM-esque parts.
There are obvious Punk influences in the band’s sound and they are nicely accentuated in songs like “Dead and Destroyed”. The harsh vocals are a little low in the mix and most of the times are hidden behind the pounding guitars. There are a few solos here and there that just add extra Thrash-iness to the overall very solid music.
Angrepp’s song writing is very mature and they create very good songs on “Warfare”, something interestingly different from most young bands. However, we think that sometimes they don’t manage to make the songs too different and they end up sounding a bit a like, but with nice tempo changes some of this songs are worthy of special attention like “Rape, Kill, Rock N’ Roll”, our favorite song of this album.
If you are looking for a hard-hitting Black n’ roll/Black Thrash release, you should look no further and get “Warfare”. We think that Angrepp will only be getting better with time and will keep releasing powerful albums that will get people to break shit and start moshing non-stop.

The Gardnerz Reveal Track List and Artwork For Upcoming EP - It All Fades

Image

Swedish doomsters The Gardnerz have unveiled the track list and artwork, which comes courtesy of Daniel "Devilish" Johnsson, for their recently completed EP, entitled It All Fades. Guitarist Wilhelm Lindh comments on the EP, which is a follow up to the band's debut, The System of Nature. "This time around the songs are a bit slower and darker than on The System Of Nature, we tried to continue on the path we have chosen. We have found our niche and have no reason to stray, so if you liked our first release you will like this. This time it was a bit more of a group effort and I think that made the songs stronger."

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by Power Play Magazine

Image

By Sarah Worsley

Norwegian death metallers Fester have achieved the impossible. By blending a mixture of overused and innocuous death metal by numbers elements with a dash of personality and industrial nuances, " A Celebration..." is an infectious release with a malevolent and horrific atmosphere. This added personality just steers the album out of the generic sector and into a chin strikingly intriguing one. Just.
Rather than mass-produce the rather worn out blackened death metal tag, Fester have attempted (with only partial success) to mix industrial elements in order to inject some personality. Wipe away the memories of that Morbid Angel album and underneath this is refreshing and, let's face it, ball belting heavy. Tracks like "Metalized", "The Black Tower" and the stupendous "Rites of Mortiis" (yes, that one) use those industrial tricks, but with an oddly foot-tapping, blues feel that gives the songs distinct character. The album is let down, badly, by other tracks whose only purpose seems to be as album fodder. And as good as these three songs are, they aren't enough to carry the entire album, which is a shame.
Despite it's flaws, "A Celebration of Death" has more guts and originality than most death metal records out there.

Rating: 7/10

BULLETWOLF (U.S.) "Double Shots of Rock and Roll" CD review by hatredmeanswar2

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Bulletwolf are a band from Indiapolis, Indiana that plays a mixture of heavy metal and stoner/doom metal and this is a review of their 2008 album "Double Shots Of Rock'n'Roll" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums are mostly slow to midpaced with no fast playing or blast beats, while the bass playing has a heavy sound which sounds like a mixture of doom metal and 70's rock and there are some powerful bass leads being used at times.

Rhythm guitars mix slow doom/sludge metal riffing with some classic metal riffs and 70's rock with mostly slow riffs but there are some more update midpaced stuff that comes up times mixed in with some fast parts that have a punk feel, while the lead guitars are 70's rock sounding guitar solos with a heavy stoner feel to them.

Vocals are mostly raspy sounding clean singing vocals with some heavy singing that reminds me of Cathedral when they where going through their stoner phase, while the lyrics cover beer, whiskey, hangovers and life, as for the production it has a very powerful sound and all of the instruments have a very heavy feel to them.

In my opinion Bulletwolf are a very good stoner/doom metal band and if you are a fan of this genre you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "White Trash Whiplash" "Get The Horse Out" "Fuckfight" and "Hungoveritz".
