I'll have to take another listen when I get home but on this laptop I can say immediately the vocals are too high in the mix.

okay listening, actually the vocals are sitting about right but could use some reverb, guitars could be doubled up to make it thicker, and it's kinda sloppy maybe from the drums being off time. not bad though. I'll listen again when you advance some more, and really not picking up any crust influences at all.

I hear no crust in this either lol. Agree with SLK about it being sloppy also, and aside from layering the guitars, you could try to EQ it a little to make it sound less thinny and screechy. Even if you're going for a thin and screeching tone, that's too much and just sounds annoying IMO.

I didn't think it sounded thin and screechy... it was very mushy sounding.

somefella... i'm starting to really think that there is something wrong with your speakers.

also a word advice... if you are going to do some shit that's labeled crust. there better be something to signfy it. At the very least have some d-beat in there.

Admittedly they are laptop speakers lol, though I'm generally not a fan of raw production in general in this day and age.

that explains what you said about my pv material. practically all laptop speakers are all high end. it takes all the bass in any track and dumps it in the garbage. that's why I was like... wha? when you said you couldn't make out anything and shit. I'm tuned to A, there is heft and riffs.

This has some mushy low end but it's there be it sloppy n shit.

Ahh, I do have a set of portable JBLs which are the opposite, a tad too bassy for my liking, but I disconnect them when I want to watch movies on the computer cuz they make the dialogue all boomy and blurry, and am usually too lazy to reconnect them hah. I did give your PV stuff another listen with some headphones though and ya its lofi/raw/etc but I can indeed hear a lot better since so much of it is low-end anyway :P

Sorry to hijack the thread slightly OP hah but I think you've gotten some useful feedback already.

Yea ditto, sorry about that. practice, incorporate some actual crust or just don't bother with it at all, reverb the vocals, double up on the guitars, and program or perform the drums much better and on time.

and really lofi/raw is always the way to go. There is so much more character and energy that comes through... at least to me.

If it doesn't sound like crust, then what would you label it as? I'm still working on it.

it just sounds like regular black metal. But are you sure you know what crust is? I'm not being a dick, but if you thought this sounded like crust I'm curious to what you consider crust.

I've been listening to a lot of Iskra, Ramlord, and Dead in the Dirt lately. I was wanting more of a black metal sound than a traditional crust sound. I like Amebix and His Hero is Gone a lot, but that's not the sound I'm wanting.

Drums sound only slightly better with the timing. but still with what you listed... you sound nothing like any of those bands. it just sounds like gnarly black metal it's still pretty sloppy sounding and the drums overpower everything.

To be honest, most of the guitar part were just improvised on the fly. A few of those riffs I used for some earlier songs. I tuned my guitar to C and went at it. Any specific things that you noted? I redid the bass and cut some of the volume on the drums.

I honestly didn't know there was bass on there. I thought it was a single guitar track over some drums and vocals.

I say take what you did, practice it till you can play it through cleanly. practice the drums to get them nice and tight to the guitars and record that re-record the guitars... at least a track per each side cause you should pan them left and right, leave the bass in the center. and then record your vocals and add a bit of reverb to it.

it's a good work in progress but I think you have a ways to go with it.

The bass is way too inaudible. The drums are actually from videos I've found that I spliced together.

I've got Ezdrummer with several plugins, but it's a pain in the butt to deal with.

:???:

As in, using sound clips of other people's work in your own music?
