So a thought crossed my mind earlier that it couldn't be too difficult to emulate an existing synthesizer via an .vst plugin...right? Does this kind of thing exist? For example is it possible to get a .vst plugin that emulates a Yamaha S90XS?

Yeah, there are many VSTs designed to model a specific synth. Arturia has done emulation for Oberheims, Moogs, Yamahas and Rolands among others. Korg has released a legacy VST modelling collection that's been fairly popular. I'm sure there are others. As far as your example goes I wasn't familiar with it but after googling it I doubt anyone bothered to model it. Based on the fact that it's a workstation synthesizer from the early 2000's it is very likely that the synthesis engine was designed to emulate earlier Yamaha synthesizer technology, with other features added on top.

General musings on emulation- synth modelling is quite common, but it generally leans towards modelling classic synths that have stood the test of time and are still impressive and in demand. It isn't difficult to create a virtual simulation of analog or digital synthesizers, and some of them are quite good, but often some of the idiosyncrasies of the actual hardware is still desirable. On the other hand availability, reliability and price point are a huge selling factor so it's great that many companies are trying to create quality emulations of classic synthesizers.

Hmm. With that being said, are there any recommendations on good VSTs with good quality effects? More specifically, I'm looking for a synth VST that can give me a choir effect with a sound quality that comes from this millennia. lol
