This might seem like a noob question, but what software is best for recording all metal singing styles including melodic, growls, and shrieks. To be honest I'd perfer it to be free, but if not oh well.

Software matters least of all for basic recording purposes. Most important will be the microphone, a pop filter and a good audio interface.
If you can record noise-free and with decent quality, I think even Audacity (freeware) is as good as anything commercial.
Just make sure the recording doesn't clip.

Which software you use has no effect on the vocals, most are going to be very similar in terms of the basic post-production you might do (compression, reverb)

Choose DAW software.
Plug microphone in.
Adjust volume level so microphone input isn't clipping (so the red light doesn't go on).
Record.

There are a lot of guides on recording and basics that are already written, questions on specifics can be answered but you'll have to do a lot of learning on your own if you want to actually acquire an understanding of how it works.

Use Reaper, it's cheap/free, works incredibly well, and they have a great support forum. It's easy to use also, and you can make CD-quality recordings from a bedroom.
