What are the four words that make you wanna compose black metal.

For me, they are:

1. Atmosphere (the most important thing in all artistic music in my opinion)
2. Depth (music that can be repeated many times yet never gets old)
3. Riffs (yeah, im a guitarist)
4. Theme (common black metal sound world (Watain, Mayhem, etc.) or blend of something else included (Hades, Agalloch, etc.))

nothing "makes me want to compose black metal" - I just pick up a guitar and start playing and it's what comes out naturally.

Whenever I sit down and play, I like to apply that raw screaming black metal ambiance and tone to whatever im playing mixed with a doomy/sludgy tone and feel. I guess the style can really be applied to anything to add an edge, so when I write, I try to use it as something to wrap my stuff around, no matter how distinct it gets.

I guess I just can't help writing black metal nowadays. It was what I taught myself to play/write. I Agree that you can blend it into most other styles easily and still retain the black metal feel but this should be much more than scooping the mid out of your guitar sound , lack of bass and blast beats. I find it easiest to add thrash elements into black metal and I feel that both styles compliment each other well .

Writing black metal material in the context of other styles is problematic in that black metal is at its most effective with fittingly raw production, which on the other hand might be detrimental to material of other styles. A sufficiently dark, miserable atmosphere that black metal generally conveys is also something that fits poorly with most other music styles.
