I've read some of the discussion here concerning the genre to be, and I've all but made the final decision. It will not be announced for a good while, and I'll refrain from writing any material myself until the announcement is made. Of course, I can't help forming ideas in my mind, but then, the fact that I'm a shitty musician evens it out somewhat. Some of you may be surprised as to what the genre will be, and some do doubt will guess right...

Regardless, if you have anything insightful to say, do not refrain from saying it. Any pointful opinion/remark/pondering will contribute.

Also, kiddos, I'm not a drumming machine like SLK, but I have been drumming for a long ass time, so if those who need it want a drummer (and SLK has stuff going on, or you want a different style or whatever) I'm down.

Sure. The genre/style will be announced soon, but since it's a February songwriting challenge, it won't be much before February.

The style will not place any restrictions on how technical your song should be, even if it's a style that's generally perceived to be quite technical. There will always be the simplistic, even sloppy route to take.

There will be no restriction as to how technical your song must be. The style-to-be will allow both technical and primitive approach.

Getting a new amp so I might be down for guitar too. If someone wants to drum and someone wants to do vocals I would be willing to actually get off my ass and write a song.

It can be extended if many enough are behind schedule. You should be able to record it in two weeks anyway. I'll announce the genre quite soon. I think we can be lenient and consider the weekend February.

I'm mainly stating it more so if anyone was planning on asking me to drum for them I'll be gone 6-10 and back that weekend, and then gone again the 13-17th and hopefully that'll be all.

I'm definitely gonna come up with something for this. Already have some vague ideas forming, gonna bust out a guitar to work through a few in a little while. Probably gonna use some synths, not sure how yet...

Okay this is excellent, this is not too far off from what I wanted to do anyway so this will be interesting. I'm thinking thus far there will be much to do with an odd song structure and geee some other surprizing elements i've been kinda wanting to do anyway. Maybe a bit of influence from the new couple of projects/bands I'm actually involved in where I'm not writing guitar in.

I'm trickling in from the Free For All thread, and excuse my ignorance, but when's the due date? I can't promise, but if I write and record something and submit it before then may I participate? I could wait until a later month/challenge, I just want an excuse to try my hand at recording something (successfully).

I really like this idea. The hardest part will be incorporating the twist. I'm probably going to write some mediocre dm stuff and make good transistions into something similar to dm but put my own angle on it.

I would even say that collaborations are preferable, if the alternative is a drum machine and a synth bass. Many of us, I presume, have bands or real-life friends to play the instruments for them they can't; why not someone from the archives?'


That will be acceptable. Two distinguishably unlike breeds of death metal combined will make for a good twist, especially if one of them has some extraordinary elements in it. Be courageous, do something really far out if you want.


The deadline for submissions is for now the end of February, and there is no deadline for announcing participation provided that you're in early enough to be able to write and record the thing. The sumbission deadline may be extended if many enough fall behind schedule.

I've got something that starts out as blasting, brutal Black/Death but ends up as morbid, eerie Death/Doom brewing (I'm also gonna use some keys and clean vocals in it), and I'm gonna mix it to sound very cavernous and grim...having a bit of writers block on some of the riffs, unfortunately; I've got the main riff in the faster section and the main riff in the slower section done, but haven't figured out what else I wanna do, or how exactly I wanna structure it, beyond some vague ideas...what I ultimately wanna end up with is something like a less technical, Blackened Timeghoul, but I'll see how it turns out.
