The contest has ended. Submissions can be downloaded and reviews read in the results & reviews thread here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=88779

Welcome to the new metal-archives songwriting challenge of February 2012. The genre is death metal, with a twist. Each contestant may interpret this in whatever way they like, the essential thing is incorporation of different, preferably quite alien elements in a death metal song. How these influences are used, and what they are, is your decision. Some things to be taken into consideration:

- If you decide to write death metal fused with one of the more typical genres that accompany death metal, such as black and thrash, these thrash or black elements must be highly noticeable in order to count as a twist. If it sounds like Archgoat or some such thing, where's the twist? There has to be a twist. If you write standard black/death or death/thrash, there has to be something to create the twist, such as a third genre fusion.
- Each contestant will review every submission other than their own. Third parties may also write reviews if they like.
- This is a songwriting challenge. You may praise someone for excellent sounds and professional recording if you like, however, even those with no access to such things may participate, and bashing someone for crappy recording is boorish and uncalled for. Poor choice of sounds is another matter.
- The use of actual instruments is not absolutely obligatory, but think twice before making some synth guitar concoction. Those are generally terrible.
- Existing examples of death metal with a twist: Lykathea Aflame, Cynic, Contrastic, Opitz, the song Keeping the Cadaver Dogs Busy by Cryptopsy (though it should be more than merely a silly intro), and even The Chasm - Callous Spectre/Vehement Opposition for its vaguely flamencoesque riff.
- I'm mildly hungover as I write this, and I may have forgot something important. Ask away!

Each contestant will write a song in the vein of death metal with a twist, and each may choose any substyle to accompany death metal, even if everyone else has the same. Remember that the deadline, the end of February, may be extended if needed.

Submissions must be sent to me via PM. Upload your mp3 to a service such as mediafire and post me the link.

There is no deadline for participating as such, you may join at any time. Everyone is free to join. Even dumbasses. We're lenient.

i'd like to participate depending on the genre. I'm down for any style of death metal I guess I'll have to think on how to be more specific on the death metal. collabs... I'm not sure just depends really

Death metal seems like a nice option, but in my opinion it needs limits, a catch, something to make it less broad.

Agreed. If it be death metal, there should be a common theme, or a handful of specific styles one of several of which must be emulated.

garthmargengi, will you participate?

Put my name on the list as well, just in case I find the time to write and record something nice.

I could write and record a song if someone else would be interested in singing on it.

And if you can´t tell by my username I´d like thrash to be the genre ;)

Although the proposed Black Sabbath worship sounds great too!

I'm down for taking part regardless of the genre that gets chosen. I might have problems recording the drums and vocals properly though. If anyone wants to help me in those areas I'd be glad to help with guitars (My skill level is roughly intermediate).

Death Metal or Sabbath worship would be awesome, I'd be down for one of those two, most likely.

I'm not interested in sabbath worship.

I do agree with limiting death metal to something rather specific.

If it's Death/doom I could probably get my friend to record some drums for me. So if someone wants to do guitars/bass/vocals I am down. Or if you want to write the music I can play/record it all probably.

PM me if interested.

Sorry, but could you clarify some things please? Is it death/doom, or either death metal or doom metal and possibly the combination of the two? Will you participate only if you get someone to record all the instruments, ie. you will write a song, but not play it?

I don't want to write the music except for the drum parts. If need be I have the ability to record all of the parts if need be so if someone wanted to write a song but had no ability to record I would be down to record all the parts.

It doesn't have to be death/doom. It could be straight up death metal or straight up doom metal (I like playing drums to doom metal so that would be preferred for me.)

I'll put you under collaborators then. If the genre turns out to please you, I might resort to your drumming services myself, however, that would mean you'd also have to record the parts.

I know quite a few people that I can have record for me. I'm gonna have to start getting my chops up the only thing I have an "issue" with is fills. But I'm getting a lot better.

It'd be cool to do a sort of "origins of metal meet what metal has evolved into kinda thing;" extreme metal renditions of Black Sabbath songs. Just my opinion. Either way, if it ends up being death metal or Sabbath-esque stuff, I'm in.

It would surely be an illuminating experience. I wholly advocate this approach, be it death or black metal. Blackened Sabbath?

I might participate but I am not sure, anyway, I suggest Death Metal.
Would it be too gay to do a Gothic Metal challenge ? (ranging from flower kinda thing to extreme gothic)

Seems like most are looking forward to the death metal idea so far, but I'd be up for a challenge of goth too.

I will participate no matter the genre, so long as it doesn't end up being something that isn't metal. I like the idea of a death metal direction more than a Black Sabbath influenced theme because the last challenge was doom metal. The idea of limiting death metal to something specific makes great sense, so I second StinkyPenis's earlier death/thrash suggestion.

I might be into it, as I've always wanted to be a part of one of these challenges but only now have the equipment to do so. I'd rather not do any death metal type of stuff, unless it's more old school or something. My preference is with power metal but I wouldn't mind doing some Sabbath type stuff either. Perhaps it could be taking later evolved genres and sticking it with a Sabbath feel? You could have some people who do black metal style, death metal style, or power metal style and it might be interesting to see who can actually maintain that Sabbath feel.

Earlier on I suggested the idea of old school vs. modern death metal, where participants could be split into two groups accordingly.

Anyway, I'm fine with anything metal-wise really.

Not participating in this one due to lack of time, but death/thrash would be a solid idea.
