Ehhh, oh well. Maybe some other time. I've never written a thrash piece anyway, might be a breath of fresh air

It's not hard. Just keep the tempo above 180bpm and play a double time feel on the drums and palm mute some 16th notes on the low string and you're halfway there.

I'd be extremely disappointed if every songwriter in this contest decided to write nothing but fast, mostly palm-muted low 16th notes riffs, considering how there are far more original, interesting and diverse thrash songs (see Megadeth's Holy Wars... The Punishment Due). Certainly, there are certain elements that define thrash riffing that should appear in songs written for a thrash contest, but there's much besides that can be done in the realm of thrash metal. That pure thrash riff can be considered a framework which the riffing can implement, but it'd be highly disappointing if the songs are overly restricted by the writers' perceptions of what thrash is.

Please, let's not make this into a re-thrash nostalgy trip. Surprise yourselves and your audience!

Don't forget the chromatic shred solos and the pinched nerve yelling

Despite listening to almost none of it, I would be very into doing a thrash thing. It's so fun to play.

Yeah, indeed. The great thing about thrash metal is that it leaves a lot of room for different vocal styles. Higher-pitched growls can even work if it's more extreme, and anything in between that and the more aggressive forms of power metal and heavy metal singing can work (including a wide variety of punk vocals). There's a lot of freedom in thrash, but that's something that many don't seem to realise. Creating great thrash asks for great creativity, unfortunately contrary to popular belief.

I believe that concludes my bloated, unasked for two cents.

Agreed. I'm just afraid that I'll only be able to come up with a ripoff of "Angel of Death" or something

Well just force yourself to write something different. Set a tempo at, say 190bpm and write something there. Then tell yourself for the prechorus or whatever, you have to jump up to the A string instead of the E string. And then write whatever. And the vocals will definitely make a huge change. I'll be writing death/thrash, and I'm sure some people will be using clean, almost powermetal vocals.

Hahaha agreed Mr. Lamb. If I can't do the voice right, next best thing is just to slide a chair over a cat's foot and record the reaction

Cool. Ever since it was suggested, I've often been listening to thrashy riffs in my head while walking the dog. I'm down for any date!

Well what about what I said earlier? Basically we can go on and start now and the end date be Feb. 14th. that's almost 2 months to do it since all of us seem to have problems with deadlines.

Would anyone be interested in a "riff salad" challenge? Any genres, but with lots of different riffs?

Do you mean if you'll get done, or if the challenge itself will get done?

Awesome! I have to write lyrics and then start recording.

I wouldn't mind hosting the next challenge if nobody else wants to. Just have to figure out what theme people want.

What does that mean exactly? I made a quick search leading me to an article which mentioned bands like Origin, Dragonforce, Necrophagist, Cryptopsy... So I guess "riff salad" is a negative term used to describe overly technical, complicated and soulless metal, am I right?

I understand the term to mean a style of composition where a very large amount of riffs is used and not much effort is put into tying them together. Also, one riff shouldn't be repeated very much - the riffs should change at an interval of eight bars or so, maybe. So, lots of riffs with possibly inelegant transitions.

the most simply doesn't have to be really techincal or complicated.... let's put it this was for example you have a song that's 3 minutes... you throw in at least 20+ riffs in that song. may or may not work kinda like what Ilwhyan said. here is a blunt sorta example brought to you by metalcore who a ton of bands liked doing that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6fKnyBs5Tc

but to me this works here.

Thank you guys, it's clearer now. I usually don't like this way to compose music, but it might be interesting to give it a try. For sure it would be a huge change from my natural approach, so I could probably learn something from it, we'll see.

It's something I used to do more back in the day. It's pretty fun and if you manage it properly can sorta enhance some songs.

I don't know why I interpreted urethra's idea of "riff salad" so differently, but I'll propose my interpretation as another idea for this next challenge. One song that includes 4 different subgenres (specifically 4 to eliminate the usage of death/black/thrash as that's too easy to blend) and makes these different parts very distinct from one another but transitioning as perfectly as any song utilizing only one subgenre would. You could do this any number of ways, using totally new riffs for each genre, using the same riff but changing tempo/vocal style, adding keys to make a death metal riff sound black or doomy, changing the drum beat from double bass blast beats to d-beat, etc etc.

An example similar to what I'm talking about is this, but with transitions not so sudden/concrete and more as a whole idea rather than totally separate sections that have a completely unique idea to them.

Yea?

I think 4 different sub-genres per song sounds fun also. Whatever everyone wants to do, I'm looking forward to the next challenge. They're fun to participate in and write stuff I normally wouldn't write.

About riff-salad, I agree with SLK that it's fun. You could even go to the extreme by changing riffs / time sigs / tempo constantly. Stuff where it sounds like nonsense upon the first few listens until you semi-memorize it and know what parts are coming up.

A riff-salad is also called riff-stacking as far as I know. Basically to stuff a lot of riffs into a song instead of just beating the shit out of a few chords (which is also fun). Doesn't have to be noodly or non-noodly. Machine Head is a pretty good place to start, especially the later material.
