I don't solo. When I do it's Kerry King's version of a 'solo' so I wouldn't bother with that.

hell I really don't have any care what ya'll want to do. Most of the suggestions I'm not fond of and I rather not curve everyone's interest in doing something just because of me cause I have nothing to suggest either.

funny someone meantioned Necrophagist... I was seriously thinking about doing a tribute band of sorts directly influenced by them/him. I'll have to see if I can pull off some of the shit I want first.

How about speed metal? It's a pretty wide descriptor, so you could have a lot of variation depending on people's skills/ambition.

that seems pretty interesting awl.

and shit infinite... I've done that with a couple Lovecraft short stories. Yzordderrex's album Plague of Cursed Vermin is totally based on 'The Rats in the Walls' I also have an unreleased Yzorrderrex song that's based on 'Whisper in the Darkness'

Yeah HP Lovecraft has been done by so many bands. May as well do a Satan themed challenge.

Actually, here's a not entirely formed thought- what if everyone was assigned different tropes of metal but challenged to find a new take on it, either musically or lyrically? Ie, 'power metal about glorious battles', 'satanic death metal', 'misanthropic black metal'. That might work to push people creatively. On the other hand that might fall on it's face if people end up being uninspired.

were those supposed to be new takes of the different tropes of metal?

Ehh no SLK, I meant assigning tropes like those and then re-arranging them into something different. I'm not sure how well that would work out practically, just throwing out the idea.

How about "Cover a favorite pop song in a metal genre."? Is it done already?

We don't care for covers. I always roll my eyes deeply when any band does this, why would I ever want to slog through a bunch of covers?

Because it is fun especially when you are playing non metal music related covers. It requires enough imagination to do descent arrangement on it.

If you think so. But largely... no. I haven't heard a single cover that was interesting esp if it's a metal band covering a pop song. It's pandering.

Examples :)
HCS - Kiss by the rose
Nevermore - Sounds of silence
Xerath - Speed demon
Trollfest - Toxic :D :D :D
Cathedral - Solitude (One of the best covers I've ever heard)

And so on.

How about progressive metal. I don't think I've ever heard prog metal songs in any of the challenges so far... only some traces here and there. Could also encompass extreme metal subgenres.

I seriously rather listen to the original pop songs than any of those covers a second time. I actually like pop music.

You aren't going to convience me there is anything great in covers. Actually you could if you killed yourself over it. And even then I wouldn't.

Man, Kiss From A Rose was butchered. I dig the original a lot.

covers could be interesting, but I wouldn't want to do it as an actual challenge, personally.

@somefella Well I don't want to argue :) Was just a proposal. "Kiss from a rose" is a song that I love, but somehow liked the version of HCS as well.

@Shaolin : I know that we have different tastes of music and methods of work and I don't really care what you think or what you say. Offered the covers because the thread looks pretty much exhausted. If I want one day to kill myself probably I will stuck reading your "true" thoughts about the recording process, so I die bored or laughing. Not sure which one is better, but still there are at least 2 options :)

@kingnuuuur I like the suggestion but don't think there will be many participants.

Probably from laughing at how wrong you have always and always will be. Honestly don't know where you get the whole 'true' thoughts on recording process. I offered what I thought on it and you were the one who basically told me I was vastly incorrect though I have plenty to show otherwise for it. So I have actual backing evidence and you had your word. All I've ever done is offer my opinion on anything. But if you didn't care what I think or say you wouldn't constantly attempt to communicate with me. Do me a favor and just mute me cause it's obviously you are just trying to aggravate me in some way. I plainly state to you what I feel and it's pretty clear you didn't offer the covers just because 'the thread looked exhausted' it was the middle of a discussion of what next to do. It was a direct response to what I said.

Spoiler: show
@Shaolin :) I keep my logs. I never said you were wrong or whatever, but u were the one that started insulting. One day when you decide to record real stuff in real studio may be you are about to find that I had not bad point of view why people record with tempo track. And nope I do not want to communicate with you so you can mute me as well. Just don't like your behavior. If you skip using bad words on people even if you think that they are wrong you'll be more successful even in real world.

"I plainly state to you what I feel and it's pretty clear you didn't offer the covers just because 'the thread looked exhausted' it was the middle of a discussion of what next to do."

Ya you are "right". The conspiracy is on!!

Goodness gracious, we're all getting rather angry here. :D

Cover's aren't necessarily a bad idea. Challenge or no challenge, I was thinking of doing a cover of some of the Skyrim soundtrack, and maybe adagio for strings. It'd open a lot of windows into creativity, at least. And as an original verstion already exists, you'd have something to compare to.

Now that could be interesting, perhaps. Covering video game music, or maybe a classical piece or something like that. I dunno.

That wasn't a display of anger it was a show of how much I just don't like covers and just want to cement that so no one decided to do that again.

Actually no, what I said to you... you took offense to. I made a judgement off what you told me and that was that. I have actually recorded in actual studios, multiple ones. You just assumed I have never recorded anywhere else but with my own equipment.
I never said you had a bad point about recording to a click, I said it wasn't necessary and presented my experience, cause I did say I have recorded with and without a click. You insulted my playing and not based on timing you insulted it on 'creativity' pretty much without any knowledge of perhaps why I played something a certain way. As in if I'm playing OSDM well I'm going to adopt that style, if I'm playing grind then I'm going to play more that way. It's to finalize an overall sound from start to finish. I don't want to play some primitive black metal and then do some drumming like Mastodon over it cause it doesn't fit.

I will mute you cause you are clearly a moron.

My fav suggestions are prog metal or speed metal, but I'll do whatever everyone else decides to do for the next challenge.

What exactly is progressive metal though?

Speed metal could be fun I guess. It's basically thrash but not quite as aggressive, right? Or maybe early thrash?

Speed metal is a hard one to get down in terms of definition. Less of the straightforward trash chugging. Think Killing Is My Business instead of Fistful Of Metal or Bonded By Blood, for example.

Speed metal is pretty wide ranging, which I think is why it would make a good challenge, to see where people take it. You get the stuff that's similar to thrash, but then there are also speed metal releases similar to power metal, or punk, or blackthrash... So hopefully we'd get a lot of different interpretations.

Since it's "The Dance of December Souls" , what about Doom Metal ?
Thrash and Speed are good too just anything.

Well we have done a bunch of Doom challenges. but no speed or thrash. I'm more interested in seeing how that can be done by various members here. I mean your main arguement of 'too just anything' can be said about doom as well cause based on those challenges we got tons of different interpretations of doom metal. your arguement is as thin as one ply toilet paper.

I hate one ply toilet paper. It always chafes my butthole. I get stuff that's so thick it's like wiping with a down comforter. I take my butthole very seriously.

I'm down for speed/thrash. It'll give me an opportunity to work on some OSDM, since mine is more death/thrash anyways.

Just throwing it out there that I'd be completely down for a death metal one. The possibilities would be pretty damn big.

I know I remember when we did death metal with a twist.

I still say the thrash/speed metal. and give it a large window to work on it. like 12/20-2/14 maybe with that large window people should be able to complete their parts. which I need to finish reviewing the black metal material. I plan to probably tonight after I wrap up some paintings.

All clean sung metal? I know you all can growl/scream/grunt/fart but I would actually like to hear some singing voices. Just a thought
