Want to make a prog/death metal band but I don't have the guitar skills to do it (solos at least). I would like to be just the bassist but since here in my city it's impossible to find people, I'll have to do it all by myself. I also want to resume drums, so I just need a bit of patience since my goal is to get a guitar amp head first to record guitars more professionally and actually owning better gear.

I'm also open to record bass for metal and/or prog stuff, something that needs more creative lines on fretless bass.

Next week I'll be recording acoustic guitars for some instrumentals.

Well, I just picked my instruments and recorded this

https://soundcloud.com/kveldulfr/kveldu ... ath-demo-1

Is a sort of prog death thing that I'll complete within the next days. I did some fun basslines there, some people might like this enough (it's like half of the track btw).

It sounds pretty good. It is certainly a good start. It'll be interesting to see what comes of it.

Thanks, man! I'll be doing some guitars later ;)

Edit: I did the rest of the guitars, bar solos.

I'll do bass today and it'll be done for now.

Started working on new material, it's turning out a lot different than anything I've done before. It's still black metal, but a very friendly and catchy form, somewhat comparable to early Enslaved and early Katatonia. I think this one might benefit from a bit more work on the production than usual.

Been pretty busy of late.

The solo metalpunk band's started gigging, got a pretty cool label putting the EP out on tape, and I'm writing more tunes for an album. Trying to put together a tour for later in the year. Got a few gigs lined up at the start of next month, and we're opening for Whipstriker and Apokalyptic Raids in November, which is pretty sweet.

One of the other metalpunk bands has a wee tour next month, we're aiming for ten shows, but we've had a few fall through and only have eight. Should still be alright though, we're hitting most of the places we wanted to play anyway. We've done a few gigs recently, one was after over a month of not playing together (and that last time was a totally disastrous gig, and the time before that was the only practice for about a month again 'cause of Christmas and all that) - and somehow we absolutely nailed it. I'm still not entirely happy with my drumming, but it's getting there. Tour'll probably sort it out.

The mostly inactive metalpunk band's starting to do things again, we've got a gig lined up for November, and the main dude's possibly being a bit less useless this time around. So hopefully that'll work out.

Still writing for the blackened speed metal band, almost got a full album's worth of stuff I'm actually happy with. I've rejected most of the songs I've finished for it, it's kinda nice to be able to keep raising the standard.

The doom band's moving slowly, but there's some interesting stuff coming out of it. Kind of like Electric Wizard riffs with Jex Thoth style vocals.

Also kind of got a heavy noise rock band on the go, we haven't done much, but our one practice resulted in a seriously heavy tune. It's not really the most metal project, but it's heavy as all fuck.

And then I've got some shows planned with the noise project, and I'm still mixing the post-rock band's album. And doing as much engineering/production with local bands as I can. Busy times!

We finished recording Spirit Division's second album yesterday and the show we have coming up, which will be our last with our current guitarist/vocalist, is looking like it'll have a pretty good turnout. He should start mixing the recordings once he gets settled in to where he's moving to and I'll probably start looking for a replacement within the next week or so. We also got the album artwork finalized and it's looking pretty amazing.

So last night's show ended up going really well. It was easily the biggest turnout we've ever had and people said our performance was our best ever. A friend of mine got video of our set and the sound quality is a lot better than I had expected it to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6esIas ... e=youtu.be

Since we don't have anything scheduled, our current schedule is to start seeking out a new guitarist and wait for our current one to get settled so he can start mixing and mastering the album recordings. I'm really hoping we can get some connections to help us out since looking for musicians on Craigslist is such a soul sucking experience...

Made a quick cover today. Pretty satisfied with the guitar sound and the rhythm parts (though the parts after the second solo could have been a bit tighter). The parts underneath the solo's are original (the backingtrack came with them). Rust In Peace...Polaris

Please don't watch the video haha. I only realised I made those faces after I uploaded it :D

Over the past 1-2 weeks I've started that 99-track album I wanted to make. I've written guitar for 50 tracks so far, 40 left (plus 9 synth-only tracks). They're all 30 seconds or less and are all fast with multiple riffs (except a handful that are slow).

I like to sometimes merge black metal with noise jazz (I think the term "snuff jazz" should be exclusive to the real masters of the genre, Borbetomagus). Here is one of the more "radio-friendly" songs:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy50yNOvZ9U
And here's one not so likely to ever get played on the radio:

The band have a Facebook page, should anyone hear and enjoy it:

On Friday I released an EP with my black metal band Keiser. It's called Ascension of Ghouls and it's available anywhere digitally. I have to admit it feels quite big to finally be "on Spotify!" :-P We are nearly done writing our debut album, and Moonroot is working on the album cover, so I'm pretty excited.

New Dimaension X album called "Brain Tree Split"

It's very synth oriented. I've backed the guitars off a bit, and let the synths take over to create some expansive, spacey atmospheres and even some melodies here and there. But fear not, there are plenty of crunchy rhythm guitars, riffing, a few solos, and some weird effects.

Heavily influenced by the electronic rock of Zombi, Trans Am, Neu!, a bit of Kraftwerk, Hawkwind and the like.

Here's the link to the page at the Internet Archive where you can stream it and download the files:
https://archive.org/details/braintreesplit

The album is also streaming on YouTube:

Thanks for listening.

Hei have got some new music coming together, it is moreover a progression from and old song. That I wrote a long time ago, but with enough difference for it to be classed. As a new piece, I find some stuff does get regurgitated over time here and there. :)

My digital media class is having us do a small project to produce a multitrack audio file that tells a story. I sat in class with my laptop thinking to myself I could easily turn in what's already o my laptop but I am deciding to challenge myself and dip into creating a hip/trip hop track. So far I feel I have drums down, it's hard to pick in on what elements of the song I'm going to really compose as the main notes with this because I create a side track for say bass or just ambient sounds, but end up seeing that they sound better as the foundation element of the song. There's also my own problem with writing in timing and creating a flow for the elements of the song where I find myself really cramming a lot of things together and result in a song that only comes out to a few minutes when it could be longer and tell the story of the song better. I am having fun with this and I think it's going to help with my writing..

I'm thinking about getting a 24.75'' scale guitar with a TOM bridge and downtune it to B-standard (B E A D F# B), and I've googled some information about how such a thing would intonate, it has been really amusing to read such threads on guitar forums.

Usually, it's a thread where someone asks what string gauge would be good for whatever tuning, and there's guaranteed to be at least one guy saying "just buy a 7-string set and throw away the top string", like that made any sense whatsoever. If it's the forum of some classic guitar brand like Marshall or Les Paul, there's also guaranteed to be a bunch of 50-year old dads complaining about kids and how E-standard is the only real tuning and everyone should only play fucking Hendrix on a strat through a Marshall or whatever.

Anyway, if anyone here has experience and wants to share, that would be cool. I know how to set up a guitar, but I'm concerned that a TOM bridge doesn't have enough room to adjust intonation properly. I'm thinking about getting a 13-62 light baritone set by D'Addario, since I play 12-60 on a 25.5'' in that tuning.

Been revisiting some material I made last year for Unlife that, originally, was going to just be a demo, but after writing some more material recently, I've decided to turn it into a full-length. All of the songs are quite lengthy as well, with the opus being a little over 8 minutes long. There will be an intro that I made some time ago, along with the 3 Metal tracks that were going to be the meat of the demo, plus 2 more. With the intro and the 3 Metal tracks I have as of now, it totals out to be a little over 23 minutes long, so I figure I can get another 2 songs written and get it to around 35+ minutes and that'll be it. Got a title worked out, very cheesy, but I'm content with it: Ancient Powers of Darkness. That was also going to be the title of the demo.

Here's a rough mix of one of the tracks. Vocals are fucking awful, but I didn't have a lot of time to do them that day, and I just wanted to hear what the whole thing would sound like. Also, no bass yet, but this is it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ioovMb2uP4

And then here's the intro. It's a little long, so it will be cut down some. Planning on starting the first track when the bells come in near the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5I9OqJeZI8

I've also been working on putting out either a demo or an EP for Drenched, which should be completed soon, whenever I can get some time to record. Been busy with work lately though, so not sure when that will be.

Found my old cassette recorder with tapes from 90s town hall meetings that I recorded The Cave on back for Satan Pope. It has some eerie stuff on it and I found another cassette for it with slow speed recordings of people saying numbers, perhaps addresses or something but it made me think of those number stations that emit numbers consistently. Either way I plan to use this further in either Perdu en Soi or my experimenting with hip/trip hop.

I'm getting all my stuff setup on my new laptop for recording again. Reaper and podfarm along with my korg microkey drivers. I'm noticing for some reason when I use podfarm as a vst it has a much higher level of gain and a background hum while it does not have these when using it solo as a program. Also checking out this Peavey Revalver vst I saw in decibal for the hel of it, III has fair tones but 4 has nothing free, I'm still contemplating buying the models for 4 that I use in III but then again I'm considering getting a Shure sm57 soon, only I'll be limited with my schedule and time I'll have to record at the volume I'd need. Aside from all that, I'm trying to learn more with my midi controller and whatnot but it's frustrating learning things from a less analog way and being limited to what I have. So much more about vsts and midis to learn and learning how my controller works aside from applying a single vst instrument to it.

Currently jamming some no-wave/noise rock/hardcore stuff with my pals. We're envisioning Confusion is Sex style Sonic Youth combined with free jazz and old school thrashing hardcore.

I have a few ongoing and long term projects at the moment, including the soundtrack to fictional neo-acid western film, complete with written story to accompany it, a special project I've been describing as "a massive and deeply moving work that stretches beyond music and stories", and a contemporary symphony of sorts utilizing aleatoric composition and experimental interpretations of things completely unrelated to music.

I can give you a little bit of an idea with a demo we have. It's not representative entirely of the sound, and finished tracks will have more drums and jazz and stuff. This was just a test to see my guitar combined with my partner's more jangly and funky guitar. http://www45.zippyshare.com/v/Nxe8nmnt/file.html

I'm torn on the distorted guitar, dunno if that's the sound we want.

This is just a reminder of something I often forget. If you want to do more musically, but you feel at a block, remember the various avenues of music you may not be exploring, as they all tie into each other. I often write, writing is my favorite musical thing but I have had writer's block for a couple weeks now - I saw a video today of a street performer playing with some incense stuck into the head of his guitar - and I thought "I'm totally going to cop that", so now I have a new performance idea, which could lead to inspiration.

But in a broader sense, if you are tired of composing, then learn a song. If you are tired of learning songs, then compose. If you are tired of playing, transcribe. If you are tired of transcribing, arrange. John Petrucci recently released a "5 Tips for Guitarists", and he says very much the same things, and most musicians over the course of their lifetimes will just be repeating these things, because music is a very upfront art. In a way, it is actually very simple.

Finally got my death metal YouTube collaboration on a Bloodbath cover all done and posted after some slowness. Looks like we'll be doing a few more of these, a lot of fun :)

It's been about 4 months since I released my project's demo, which was right around the time I got a band together for it. Since then, it's taken ages to get the songs up to a playable level, mostly because the guitarist was slacking and constantly arguing with me. I ended up booting him two weeks ago and I switched from bass to guitar. Also, we had two month long hiatuses during his tenure, so we basically have to start back at square one, but the vocalist has been improving substantially since I've been giving him lessons in the off time and I've also taken the time to work on new material and arrange some stuff from on old project to work for this band. Now we're just sitting around waiting until another practice happens. It will be interesting to play guitar in a band again, it's been a few years. I don't think we're going to find a replacement guitarist or bass player any time soon, so we're considering going to bass backing tracks live. It's probably better than giving up on the band or getting somebody who's going to gimp the parts.
