Spirit Division's debut album is officially released and I'd be quite curious to hear any feedback on how it sounds. Got a release show lined up for Friday, dropping it off at a couple local record stores tomorrow, and hopefully getting some copies mailed to people out of state.

Before I realized you were from NY, I thought "man, this stuff has that old east coast death/grind feel to it." Like old Abominog... love to hear it in the studio.

Woke up this morning to find out we got a VERY positive review of our show in Revere, Massachusetts from last week.

http://dirtywaternews.com/full-metal-ma ... sorrowseed

Probably my favorite line in the whole article is as follows:

Quote:
Sorrowseed were born to melt skulls. It’s a melodic, extreme metal assault of the senses that forever embeds their sound and their image within your mind. You will never forget their name. You will forever remember their incredible, brain-bashing sound. You will wake up at 3AM from dreams of owning the mosh pit.

It helped considerably that that show was the best we've ever performed. All four of us were on point, and the crowd, which was legit wall-to-wall packed, was going crazy for every single thing we did. It ruled.

Recorded yesterday, kinda just felt like doing a new Draug track and upon doing so stumbled across an ep's worth of material I recorded back in 2013 that was supposed to be for a full length but I guess I didn't finish out writing. 5 songs around 20mins. I guess I'll write some lyrics and release it as is cause I don't know what my settings were as far as the HM2 and rig set up I used for it. cause that and what I'm doing now def do not match. old stuff is much clearer sounding, what I'm doing at the moment is like the first EP.

also wrote and recorded another fall of efefra sounding track. at least this one isn't 15mins. it's only 8. I might just release it as a full length with the 2 cause I don't think I have any more material stored in me for that. if something doesn't come up this week then I'll move on with it.

So our album has gotten more plays in a week than our demo did in a year, we've gotten some press with more things coming up in the near future, got a couple decent shows lined up for later in the year, and our drummer was let go but we're in the process of replacing him with a guy in the scene who I've been a fan of for a couple years now.

Yeah, feels like things are looking up for Spirit Division.

Finally got around to getting CDs made from kunaki for some of my stuff... I think I love kunaki now (and SLK for showing me it)

Anyone have experience of stacking tubescreamers or other overdrives? I run a TS-9 at 0-10-10, and I can't get enough of what it does to my tone. I'd run tone and level at 11 if I could!

I'm starting to get the writing itch again, and this time I think it's gonna be a smaller batch of Gloaming tracks that will (hopefully!) wind up on a split. I'm really proud of the album but, in doing the long distance collaboration thing, I think the process of writing and recording it made us all aware of the wrinkles to be ironed out, so I think the execution will be better on new material.

I'm thinking of getting some outside collaborative help for the drums (possibly bass too) on the next Oshiego release. Would help to mix things up a little and take a load off my back too. I'm liking the new songs that we're doing already, which are a fair bit different from the traditional death-thrash sound.

I did that with the bass for the next Ff album. I'm primarily a bassist but there are so many guitar layers to record that I just want to finish the thing already. Still, the guy who's recording bass is a really good player and has top tier equipment.

Man, the more I'm getting close to the end of recordings, the harder seems to do it.

It sucks. I spent 2 hours (!!!!) recording 1 lead guitar of 1 minute and half. I just couldn't play it well for no reason: I recorded another one which was way more difficult to play at first take. I also hate to play something too many times; I prefer the 'live' feeling of first takes. I even prefer small mistakes yet more human performances than perfectly soulless playing, especially on classical guitar.

Maybe stepping back and going totally another route and working something that isn't even forestfather. just dick around with some demos of some other project.

I never spend so long on single parts. If I can't nail it in 4-5 attempts, I try to take a little break and either go have lunch or smoke a cigarette, watch a funny video, check my text messages/emails etc. Just to get out of that "why the fuck can't I get this right" zone before the frustration even begins.

I usually do the same. I record some things and stop a bit, but it was the last section to finish the longest track on the album so I really wanted to finish it.

Today I expect to record the outro, which is a way-harder-than-it-looks song.

I feel like I composed some stuff that was already hard to play and even if I did a demo of all songs, now I think I was a bit better player back then. I'll need to practice a lot to get it right in 1 take. It can't be recorded in sections, since is just a classical piece on acoustic guitar.

@SLK: I wrote 2 songs that are too ferocious black metal to be Ff now. Maybe I should write a couple more and work them as an Ep.

Ordered an 8-string guitar today, a white Ibanez RG8. Pretty excited to mess with a bunch of weird tunings and chord voicings. Anyone else here use eights?

Finally released the second Rats of Reality EP yesterday. It contains 4 songs and is a huge step up from the first EP in my opinion both in terms of song quality and recording quality. A couple of Hellripper splits are in the works too and I am in the middle of recording a OSDM EP and a post-punk/goth style EP.

Do you have another overdrive/distortion/boost, or are you maybe looking to get one to make your TS9 do more of what you want it to do?

I'm maybe looking to get another one. Not another TS-9, I think, since I don't want too much of TS-9's intrinsic tone.

It's probably too much. The JVM410 OD1 channel is incredibly tight without any overdrive. I'm going somewhat for that tone Blackie had in Root for a while: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9dXHWLaKo0

You could always opt for a hotter OD/boost that has similar properties.

Maxon OD808 and Boss SD-1 are my favourites for boosting an already hot sound.

EDIT: Here's a quick example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqFTNoHAAS4)

Played a show yesterday with Pizzahifive from Ohio. One of the best shows we have played and they were seriously the tightest grindcore band I have ever seen and the loudest. Watch those two dark boys at MDF

Trying to get my Pro Tools 10 to work on my computer, but since I installed Windows 8.1 and got a new HD it keeps getting error messages when trying to open it :(

Been talking to a guy about recording drums for his project. I really dig the music he's written, but I keep having to put off recording demos for him to hear due to these errors :(

Been busy with a couple of new projects, one of them non-metal and the other one a new metal project with my SO. Just started tracking a new song last night for that metal project, and I'm pretty excited.

As far as Batsheva goes, I'm sitting on a split with Hellripper at the moment -- we're looking for a label to release it, but have had no luck so far.

And I'm also glad to announce that Batsheva recently just put out a new EP yesterday. I was feeling spontaneous and experimental, so one (or maybe two, arguably) of them is is a proper metal track while the rest are kind of experiments in noise and audio manipulation.

https://batsheva.bandcamp.com/album/i-a ... of-babylon

It probably won't be too indicative of future material (I seriously don't expect too much of the noise stuff to be making a comeback ... maybe the deeper vocals on the title track will), but it was fun to work on.

I began working on a drone rock/minimalist album. Two songs done so far, only a few riffs. Also a mellotron track.

Started jamming with a drummer friend of mine for our new project, Domestic Abuse, which is leaning more towards scummy heavy metal. At our first, and so far only practice, we recorded this GG Allin cover, which still needs the backing vocals. I am doing vocals/guitar/bass, as well as recording, mixing, etc, etc...

I've come to rather enjoy the huge high mid boost of the TS-9, so I wouldn't change it altogether to something flatter.

Haha, I was actually also gonna recommend stuff like the Rook or a Blues driver but those have a bit more character and are kinda wasted if you just use them as a boost :P
