January - February - 25 Day - 1 song challenge

You have twenty five days to write one original song
The following criteria MUST BE MET

- All music must be written and recorded within a time frame of twenty five days from the start of the challenge

- All entries must be written within the time period spanning the start and end of the challenge

- No Covers

- You will be granted 5 days of planning time prior to the start of the challenge - No music is to be written in this time - It is time to prepare and plan any ideas or concepts you may have, be it lyrical, instrumentally, mixing or otherwise. Also, to get all of your gear and anything else ready, eg strings, pedals, instruments, etc

- You may work with friends or other users on this site in writing the songs, you must notify the TS if you will be co-operating with any other individuals

- There are no restrictions regarding production quality

- There are no restrictions regarding song length

- All submissions are final

- If you would like to submit an all synth piece or anything in that vein, all keyboard, piano, hell, even just a guitar track ( provided that it actually resembles a song in some way ), then that is fine.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK

Upload your song to rapidshare and send me the download link in a PM. DO NOT POST THE LINK IN THE THREAD

THE END OF THE CHALLENGE

At the end of the challenge I will personally compile all entries into a folder and upload it to Rapidshare and dropbox
Then I will post multiple download links to an RAR file compiling all of the entries, and a link to dropbox

REVIEWS OF ALL ENTRIES

All participants must download the folder ( not if you listen through dropbox ) and proceed to listen to every song, and then post a review of every
track, barr their own, providing a full paragraph review of each song, and a score on a scale of 1-10
Based on how much you enjoyed it

I DIDN'T FINISH WRITING/RECORDING/ETC IN TIME...

That's alright, there is always a next time

Duration of the entire process:

Preperation and planning: January 26th-31st
Writing, recording, mixing and mastering: February 1st-25th

Summary of this challenge

25 days of song writing time
5 days of preperation
No restrictions on recording quality
No restrictions on song lengths

That's cool.

Are you referring to a specific genre contest, or maybe length wise?

I guess I'm down since it's so open

What is the 'challenge'? Can there be a 'hard mode' of some sort? I'm interested, but I write/record songs all the time, and this doesn't seem like anything special to me.

If Shaolin and yourself both feel this way, how about throwing an idea or two my way? I'm just going off of the previous challenges that I found, two in total.

Maybe the '' hard mode '' could be the achievement of a specific song length? seven minutes plus? I'm not sure.

Any ideas, guys?

I'm not sure honestly. length I guess could be a factor. but that wouldn't be too difficult probably for either of us. I'm really just not sure.

Right.

I'm not too sure how to make this one different from the previous two challenges really, nothing is coming to mind.

Writing music is all well and good, but I'm not sure how we can spice this up any further. I'm fresh out of ideas.

"Hard mode" is a terrible idea. What are the criteria for deciding who gets to participate in it as opposed to the "regular" challenge? It would probably just result in a lot of people getting upset. I think the point of challenges like this is just to get a listen to what sort of music other forumgoers are making/can make, especially since there are lots of musicians on the forum who don't often post in this part of the forum or who don't regularly post their own musical output. That, and it might be an avenue for people to try out "side project" type ideas that are a departure from their main bands/projects/sounds.

How about instead of calling them challenges, we call these more open-ended ones something like "Metal-Archives DIY Mixtapes" or something like that. You could reserve the word "challenge" for the songwriting threads with more specific goals, like writing in a particular genre or assigning posters to record something in a style they don't normally play, or something like that.

Edit: Whoops, forgot to mention that I'm gonna participate in this. I'm doing a collaboration with Grimmig, if that's alright.

Yeah, that's fine. I'll list both of you together.

So how about we just use this as another chance to write a song in any style, and maybe the next song writing challenge, be in a certain style? that way, people this time around can write whatever they want, and then there can be a certain style for the next one.

If people agree with this, we should do it.

I was thinking it'd be a "hey I want to do something other than just writing/recording a song". Like a... challenge of some sort. Some criteria that would make it difficult.

Haha.

I don't know mattp, try riffing with your eyes closed? maybe purposly mess up the recording speed of your equipment by a second and a half?

Sounds like a challenge to me.
