Personally I think I've been in just as many non-metal bands/projects than I have been in metal. I've played in a crust band and I make ambient music. I'm not sure if the band I'm in right now is metal. Some of the songs are hard rock and some are almost death metal.

So how about you guys? Anyone play in anything not metal?

I've been playing with my dad in a country/rock band for maybe 3 years now. We're the house band in a bar downtown. It's the only time I've ever seen playing music actually pay off in real money, as irritating as the genre is.

I helped my friends out a while ago to take part in a battle of the bands at our school, and well I'm still in the band even though we don't really rehearse much. The style is alternative rock (more or less..I didn't argue about the style or anything, I didn't mind) which is really not my thing, but I have to admit, I did enjoy the rehearsals, and the battle of the bands was really fun. Here's a video if anyone's interested of us live playing Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes..nothing special I know, but the comments were positive and considering we only practised together for a month, I'm satisfied with the outcome. I'm the guitarist who did the (admittedly shitty) solo.

My main band at the moment is a rock band that takes influences from classic rock, punk, and alternative rock.

Jazzy blues on acoustic guitar, I have been working on one seriously cool song but I doubt it will be finished anytime soon. It's the song that would play in the pub of Edward Hopper's painting Nighthawks. Google it up.

I have an acoustic project going on right now. Nothing too too fancy, though I do have a couple cool fingerstyle moments that I love.

I used to play bass in a band for five years that was along the lines of pg99, hot cross, off minor and such. whatever you want to describe it.. techincal indie rock or screamo. It was fun and I enjoyed it. kinda been thinking about doing a solo project of the same with the last few songs I composed for the band that never got used. a friend of mine was encouraging that I do so. we'll see maybe in spring.

Well what I play is on the border of not metal anyways...it's super Crusty Grind with little of the DM side of Grind. So it's extreme punk that just has some metal influence.

see I view that close enough to metal to not really count for a thread like this. cause if that was the case I would've listed the grind bands and power violence/harcore stuff i'm doing. but I figured this was for stuff that is vastly unmetal.

In grade 7 I played for a cover band for various not metal bands. We covered AC/DC, Red Hot Chilli Peppers (even though I don't like 'em), sublime, the Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, along those lines. Iron Maiden was the most extreme thing we covered. We sucked though, only the drummer and I were the good ones for our standards.

well, I've said "yes" to some guys who wanna play stuff like Anathema (actually they're not heavy, but still I love them) and H.I.M (how gay :P ) and asked me to compose a rock song to play live. Still nothing will be done till vacation and I am not sure If I'll proceed with them or not.

I sing both metal and pop stuff depending on how I'm feeling. I got both styles on my myspace. House by the cemetary is metal while "only you" is poppy kind of stuff.

I'm in a completely improvised acoustic experimental folk/blues type band that is a lot of fun. We've recorded about 40 or so jams that incorporate all genres of music that we enjoy on whatever instruments we have available to us(mostly guitar and bass, we also have tracks with banjo, cello, violin, and shamisen). I also used to play in a garage/punk band in the vein of The Stooges but heavier :D

I play jazz fusion as well as pop punk. Then there's the obvious things like classic rock, prog rock, alt. rock, etc.

My main instrumental project is definitely not metal...Hell, I don't even really know what to call it. Progressive/experimental electronica fused with film & game scores I suppose. However there is a strong metal influence on my later stuff, specifically in the percussion department. I always found it odd that metal is my listening music of choice, but never really got into playing it. Jamming with metal bands is a load of fun though.

I've played in ska and punk bands as a teenager. I'm currently in a noise/drone band (Winters In Osaka), a grindcore band (Paucities) and I have a solo power electronics project (Magia Nuda).

I've recorded music of many different styles ranging from IDM style electronica to jazz to musique concrete to world to straight forward rock.

But yeah, I primarily play grind/hardcore punk and make noise.

I produce psytrance/darkpsy and play live, also DJ psy/goa stuff...As much as I prefer to listen to metal, theres not much that beats spinning psychedelic bleeps and bloops to a bunch of hallucinating hippes :)

Although I listen to mostly metal, Ive never really played it. The band I'm in is doing pretty well right now... we play a mix of post-punk, new wave and electropop.

I've played in a crust punk band, one grind band, a goth rock/death rock band, a melodic hardcore band, and a pop band. I've had fun in each of them, but to my suprise the most fun i had playing music was in the death rock band.

I don't have any releases, but I recognize the name from Troniks or some other Noise forum.

Nifty.

I've been playing in this indie/alt band since 2008 (link in sig). I play bass. It's good fun, and not too serious (due to kids, jobs, etc.). It's like a modern indie meets claasic 90's alt rock type of thing.

I've also played in garage rock/punk (2001-2007) and "Ramoes-core" pop-punk (2005-2007) bands.
