Do you think that a band without vocals could be successful in extreme types of music like death metal or grindcore? Would the music feel empty and boring without the vocals? Also, are there any bands that play only instrumental extreme metal?

Its possible to make amazing music without any vocals whatsoever, but its a lot more difficult.

Blotted Science make really cool experimental instrumental extreme metal. They are probably the most successful thing in that vein that I can think of. The exception to this is the Liquid Tension Experiment, but they were obviously a shoe-in since the band consisted of almost dream theater in its entirety after they had already achieved a good level of success. They were not even metal either.

edit: and LTE aren't even that big, so go figure. Good instrumental music: possible! successful: if you are trying to define your life, then no.

I think it would be difficult for instrumental grindcore to become popular, or for it to be any good. The vocals and lyrics are a main part of that genre imo

I guess it depends on the breadth to which you are willing to consider metal 'extreme'.

Nyctophobia (UK) has just put out a new, instrumental album that, while not death or grind by any extent of the imagination, is very extreme in a polarized sense.

The artist has made it available for a free download (or to purchase if you so wish) which can be found at the link above. Check it out, it's slow, heavy, and rife with atmosphere.
