I feel like a failure with this technique. I've been trying for a long time but I can't seem to get my left hand up to par with my right. It's keeping me from doing a proper, fast double stroke. I've been practicing with speed and everything but it feels like it is something with my grip. Anyone else have this problem, or have a solution?

Put up a video of your technique, and some of the more experienced drummers can probably help you with it.

There's a video of my technique. It's not the best quality but it is the best I can do.

Well it's difficult to tell if your doing it properly from the video, but if your right hand feels correct, simply mimic it exactly with your left. The main thing is to ensure that your left hand is nice and loose, and that the webbing between your thumb and index finger is nice and open so your hand can accept the rebound of the stick.

I have been practicing push/pull doubles myself for three years, and I'm still not that fast or even with them, they take a loooooong time to get up to speed. Just keep practicing, and practice at speeds where you feel that your left hand is executing the motion properly. If you practice at speeds where it doesn't feel right then your just training your left hand to do it badly, which is worse than not practicing at all.

So I would slow it down and be patient. If you really want to examine the technique, get a hold of Jojo mayer's 'Secret weapons of the modern drummer dvd', he describes every hand technique known to man in extreme detail. You can also try the drummerworld forums, lotsa helpful drummers on there.

It's always time with drumming :P. I think I'll pick that dvd up. Jojo Mayer is a damn good drummer, so I can trust what he teaches me haha. Thanks for the advice, I'll just stick with it!

Yeah it's true, everything comes with time and slow methodical practice, that method will get you everywhere. It's the same with every instrument pretty much.

At the moment I'm practicing singles and doubles for 45 minutes a piece every time I practice, been doing it for a few months and it's increased my speed and control an awful lot. I got the idea from Mike mangini, you could give it a go too, it does require a bit of mental fortitude though. Mangini recommends doing 90 mins a piece!

Whilst I'm not amazing at double strokes, I have got to the level where I can mix up singles, doubles, different types of diddles and drags at a medium speed. It's hella fun and you can create some extremely interesting beats and fills with them.

Yeah, you can totally get real funky when you throw in things like that. I like throwing in a lot of rudiments into beats. Makes everything more interesting. But yeah, thanks for the advice. I guess I'll drink a lot of juice or something. Make my brain stronger for that there mental fortitude you mentioned.

Try also using more finger movements rather than using your wrists, make sure your thumb is like directly lined up with the stick. This crazy jazz drummer was showing me all this when i was playing at an improv night at a bar haha.

Okay. I always wondered if I was using a little too much wrist. I'll take the thumb advice into consideration as well. Thanks!

Yeah that's correct, the first stroke should be all wrist, the second should be all fingers. It's like a drop catch motion, you drop your wrist down and open your hand to make the first stroke, then you close your hand/fingers to make the second stroke.

Here's some videos that I just dug up...
